I realise that its more mainstream than some, but I collect Pokémon cards and paint Warhammer figures. It still feels a little childish when telling people about it, but I love them so fuck it

What is your works sick leave policy like?

Posted by YchYFi@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 62 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

Full sick pay for, I think, 6 months, maybe more. Rolling twelve months for absence, I think it's 3 separate instances count as a trigger for a wellness meeting which is just an informal chat.

The best man at my wedding was someone who I'd met through my last job. I have people in my current job that I would mostly consider acquaintances, but there are a few that j would say are genuinely my friends, yeah.

People who have had piercings - when did you decide to take the jewellery out for good?

Posted by CozJeez85@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 271 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

I've tried a few times to keep them in place but it just never sticks, not sure if my body just doesn't like them or if I'm just too impatient. Tongue piercing lasted about a week at most, scaffold piercing maybe two. Found both of them a bit annoying and probably never game them the right opportunity to heal properly

What living Brit is worthy of a state funeral when they die?

Posted by HeavyHeavy0726@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 996 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

David Attenborough, Larry the cat. Maybe not a state funeral, but Tom Hunter and Chris Hohn should get some solid recognition for their philanthropic work.

You’re away for a night at a hotel, do you checkout early or late?

Posted by Delicious-Series-316@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 188 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

I'm very much a morning person so like to get up early and go do stuff. My wife doesn't keep well and takes a fair bit of medication etc which means she sleeps late. If checkout is at 11, we're checking out at 10:59, but as soon as we're checked out we go do stuff in whichever city we're in, we wouldn't sit about in the lobby.

Did you ever use chalk boards in school?

Posted by Fun_Caterpillar392@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 385 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

Yeah, we had blackboards in primary school. I think it was whiteboards and smartboards by the time I went to secondary school in 2001, but definitely blackboards before then.

Do you know your neighbours' names?

Posted by Rough-Foundation9208@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 309 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

Yes and no, with a caveat. I've got 6 neighbours in the building, I know two by name but that's because one is an old school friends Dad and the other is an ex colleague of my wife. Other than that you've got the introvert with the dog upstairs, the loud and often angry polish guy, the older lady across the landing and the Asian family that have just moved in downstairs (that replaced the student, who replaced the very angry old couple)

Is anyone really scared about AI job losses?

Posted by Even-Wasabi7183@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 242 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

I wouldn't say I'm scared at this point, but mindful of it. A chunk of my current job does involve dealing with clients directly and various checks and scrutiny of physical things that in theory I don't think AI could be used for. However other parts of my job could definitely be done, in theory, by AI which could change the scope of my role or reduce the amount of people needed to do it, putting my job at risk in the future. However, with that said, I don't like my job and would like to leave, so if they wanted to offer a voluntary redundancy package then let's talk 😂

Ones who've been to Spain did you wish you spoke any Spanish? Should I learn Spanish?"

Posted by UDAAAAA@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

You should try and learn a few phrases at least, but it also depends on where you go. I'd imagine English is widely spoken or at least understood in say Barcelona, Madrid or some of the more popular island destinations like Tenerife, however I've been to Santander twice in the last two years and found that I really needed some Spanish because most people had no English whatsoever. So basically, learn a bit of Spanish

Why do people say that we should grab a coffee sometime, but never follow up?

Posted by Embarrassed-Spite499@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 123 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

I would never say no to a friend or acquaintance who wanted to meet up for a coffee, but I am absolutely terrible at initiating contact. There's so many people that I'll have said "hey, let's catch up for a coffee soon" and then just forget to follow up on it, and if they haven't followed up on it themselves, I'll convince myself that they don't want to meet up. A self inflicted vicious circle.

What’s an out of date view you hold?

What is something in the UK that you have changed your viewpoint on recently?

Posted by Leeeeeroy-Jenkins@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 273 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

My discussions into my possible ADHD have definitely opened my eyes to some of the issues impacting my weight and my struggle to lose weight. That's not to take away any self responsibility by any means, I know I could do more, but I also now realise that my brain is wired in a certain way that certainly doesn't help me. The cost of living, the cheapness of easily accessible junk food and the lack of free time people have now definitely doesn't help either.

What is the most unreliable takeaway cuisine?

Posted by tmr89@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 161 comments

Yeah I think I'd say fish and chips, probably with a focus on the chips part, but if you got any form of supper you knew you were taking a massive risk of getting absolutely stone cold, awful chips with it.

Do you keep your cats inside?

Posted by Timtamjam44@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 138 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

When I was growing up we were always told that cats should be outdoor pets, absolutely. I didn't know many people who had indoor only cats. On a personal level having lost two cats to accidents outdoors, I much prefer keeping my cats indoors The mentality does seem to be changing now, roads are busier and we're learning of the impact that cats can have on the local wildlife/general ecosystem but from my own purely anecdotal experiences it does seem that in the US/Canada indoor cats were always the norm.

Men, what's your budget for hair/beard grooming?

Posted by mania_d@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 82 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

So other than having spent on some beard oil and stuff, nothing. I shave my own head, trim my beard and try to keep the beard as neat and tidy as possible myself. That said, I am very tempted to go to a barber and let them do a quick beard trim and shape, so I can hopefully just tidy it up from there as I'm well aware that I'm not great at keeping it tidy and symmetrical

Why does Coachella and other US festivals have such awful, moody vibes compared to UK festivals?

Posted by BlundeRuss@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 783 comments

Coachella is a festival for influencers and people who want to be "seen" which happens to have music. In the UK we have music festivals. I do worry Glasto tends to skew that direction too, to some extent, but not quite as bad

DNBassist89@reddit

"What happened to wanting to stand out from the crowd?" At school age? You were getting bullied for it, that's what. I'm 36, it was definitely the case when I was at school that there were certain fashion trends that everybody stuck to, it's absolutely nothing new at all. Certain brands you chose, others you desperately avoided. And now every teenager thinks he's a wee roadman, and everybody has phones to record things, you gotta wear all black and cover your face.

Work, unfortunately. I worked right through the lockdowns in "essential" retail, it wasn't particularly pleasant. In my spare time I like to play video games and bass guitar (funnily enough), both things I can do on my own, so I was still able to do that, thankfully.

Brits, do you avoid Indian restaurants in foreign countries? (Excl India)

Id much prefer to eat the local food when I go abroad. The best Indian I've ever had was in Birmingham (not foreign, ofc) but the second best and very close to the best was at a Nepalese/North Indian restaurant in Lisbon.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1626 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

Similar to how you've suggested, basically. I would pay off my dad's mortgage. And I'd essentially pay him and my mum (separated, rents) a salary each month so that they could afford not to work, but could choose to still work if they wanted. My mum's health isn't amazing, so I'd like to make sure she was comfortable. My in-laws just paid off their mortgage, so they could have a wee lump sum. I've got a few close friends who's mortgages id pay off and who's kids would have money put aside for their futures. Another couple of friends who don't own their property, I'd either pay their deposit or cover their mortgage. Id set my granny up for the rest of her life. Obviously id cover incidentals, emergencies and just general treats and stuff, but I probably wouldn't tell anybody exactly how much money I had/had won.

Has using a distinctly British slang phrase/ term of endearment ever gotten you in trouble? I just got a warning from a US subreddit for calling someone a "poor cow" with complete sincerity.

£10k. I hate my job and want to leave, but don't have anything to fall back on. £10k would give me enough to make sure the bills are paid for a few months until I'd hopefully find something else

Frequent wrong number calls from an elderly woman - anything I can do?

If the number is a landline then you've got the area code? And does she leave any sort of name or contact info that would be identifiable? Might be worth looking up where the call is from and maybe sending a quick e-mail to their social work team regarding any concerns (if you have any identifiable info, of course)

Posted by yksociR@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 222 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

Do you have any hobbies or any hobbies you'd like to explore? Ive started painting miniatures, Like Warhammer etc. so if I had a spare £80 given to me, I'd likely treat myself to a box of that, or a single bigger more expensive model than I'd otherwise struggle to justify. Or what about travel? £80 would cover flights somewhere if you had a look on say Ryanair's website, especially with the sales on/coming up

So I was born down south and moved up to Scotland as a baby when my folks split, but I won't count that. I've moved 4 times in total, twice as a school kid and once just as I was leaving school. The final time was when I moved out of my mum's place when I was 21, lived here since and I'm now 36

Posted by Competitive-Step-270@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 240 comments

DNBassist89@reddit

I don't regret it, as such, but I've absolutely stopped doing it. Facebook and Twitter were the worst for the amount of racist, homophobic and transphobic shit you'd see and try to call out, but there was just nothing to gain from it. People aren't receptive and they just continue to spout absolute shit. So it's a new rule for me. Don't argue with strangers on the internet
