Do you actually take your full lunch break away from your desk, or just eat while working?

Feels like loads of people don’t actually step away anymore
borrelborrelborrel@reddit
I eat while I work then go outside when it gets to my actual lunch time.
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
If you don't, change that immediately.
adsm_inamorta@reddit
Or just let people do what they want, what is it to you if someone does something different to you
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
How do you even land on a response like this, people like you need the walks outside.
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
I used to sit at my desk for lunch. Mainly so I could watch an episode of something on my phone, but you really notice the time drag on too.
The past 8 weeks or so, I've changed that. I now go for a walk at lunch time, not even the full hour, usually half an hour or so - but it's one of those things the French get right. Get away from your desk and do some actual mental relaxation
Nimble_Natu177@reddit
This, if you work somewhere with even a short walk with some greenery nearby, walk it, you won't regret it.

ThrowRAWhitebeach@reddit
I eat at my desk for the whole hour. That needs to change but it probably never will unless it is somehow forced upon me to step away.
No_Story5313@reddit
Away. Always.
I was the person who used to eat at their desk. Constantly bothered, 'oh I'll come back later', then with a mouthful of food I'd reply with 'no no its fine, what you after?'
That mentality and various other factors led to me developing stress.
Now I get out of the building completey. Important to get some walking in, and I'll eat outisde if the weather is decent or in the work kitchen if it isn't.
99% of the time I start and finish on time. My boundaries are clear.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Good on you for putting that structure in place, it sounds much healthier overall
No_Story5313@reddit
As part of a bigger issue of boundary setting, it's crucial for everyone to have them. Amongst other things, you'll be taken advantage of.
Not saying I never work late, but Im in my mid 40s, gone are the days of trying to impress people above me and climb the corporate ladder. I do the work and go home, I don't live my job.
ND_CuriousBusyMind@reddit
Yep once you hit mid-life you start to reassess priorities.
No_Story5313@reddit
I'm never going to be a director, chief exec or similar, so I know the next best thing is to carve out a niche for yourself and work it as best you can.

Absolutely, setting boundaries is key work shouldn’t consume you all the time

I eat my desk then take my full hour to go for a walk
crustisocs@reddit
I’m in work 8.75 hours, they give me 0.5 hour break unpaid. 1 hour sounds like bliss

marraballs@reddit
Yep I do the same but go to the gym or for a run
Abobs@reddit
yep i do this too!
ConnorMartyn@reddit
This is what I was going to say. I eat whilst I work so I don’t waste any of my break sitting and eating and can go for an hour walk.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Thats the way to do it!
Warm_Stress_1654@reddit
This is a bit of a grey area for me, because I work from home using a laptop on the kitchen table.
shellturtlestein@reddit
Leave my desk
Fuck sitting there like a corporate lemon
EuroSong@reddit
I don’t take any lunch break, because it means I get to go home earlier. I’d rather spend the time at home.
Easy_Top_3311@reddit
I go down to the staff restaurant with my colleagues.
No_Caramel2506@reddit
I work from home so I force myself to take a walk on my lunch as I will just sit there and work through my lunch. I then get back and eat at my desk.
Acceptable_Bee_1105@reddit
When I worked in an office, I made a promise to myself after a year to ALWAYS go away from my desk for my full break. I noticed I was less of a ‘busy fool’, much more productive and my wellbeing! My boss didn’t like it at all - it was her company and she couldn’t understand why people would waste valuable working hours away from the office. Needless to say, those who stayed at their desk burnt out quicker and were resentful. Luckily I stepped away from that and started working self employed 5 years ago - haven’t looked back and STILL take my lunch break away from my laptop!
ManlykN@reddit
I've found having lunch break at desk is more common with older people, mainly with those in higher roles than myself. I always leave my desk.
simont410@reddit
People who eat at their desk actually scare me, don't you need a break?
nicethingsarenicer@reddit
I do! But I have ADHD so I'm constantly behind on things, or forget to have lunch at the correct time so have to have a sandwich at my desk.
What makes it worse is I live in Spain, so everyone in the office downs tools at 2pm sharp, goes and heats up their home-cooked meal and then sits with everyone else to eat at big tables. Which I'm still too shy to do even when I remember to have lunch at the right time.
simont410@reddit
No one reminds you to have lunch or invites you to the table?
nicethingsarenicer@reddit
Haha, good questions!
They don't need to remind me because the desk area empties out. But I get an email or a teams message, or I'm in the middle of writing something, and next thing I know they're all coming back. 😬
As for inviting me, my team would absolutely invite me if it occurred to them. They don't, because 1. If my (fellow foreigner) work wife is also in the office, we eat together (about 50% of the time), and 2. They would expect me just to join them. But when I started here my Spanish wasn't great and it made me so shy I avoided the canteen altogether, and now it's a bit better, I feel like it's been so long I'd be super self-conscious. I'm trying to go occasionally when they have morning coffee but even now, it's a mental effort to follow them and participate BC the break conversations aren't structured or about work, obviously.
simont410@reddit
That makes sense, i don't have ADHD but from what i hear from others it can be like that. It can be hard to break into Spanish conversations when you're not so confident (I've also lived in Spain) but in my experience Spanish people are friendly and will be happy for you to join in.
ElectricFlamingo7@reddit
They tend to be the same weirdos who take their work laptop on holiday!

I was at a party once and someone was was doing work on their laptop
Bright_Shape_896@reddit

Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
My best mate did this when we went abroad last year, made no sense to me when she took the time of as AL?!
joan2468@reddit
If I’m busy I often eat at my desk but I’m not actively doing work whilst I’m eating, I’m often just scrolling idly on my phone. It just so happens that the desk is the most convenient place for me to eat on my own. And then I carry on working and then once I get to a good enough place with my work I often take a break at 3/4pm to go for a walk. It stresses me out to be away from desk for long periods during the lunch break if I know I have a lot of work to get through.
StardustOasis@reddit
I eat at my desk because there isn't anywhere else in our office to go. My laptop is always closed for the full hour, and I don't do any work. Most days I'll go into town anyway, so I'll only be in the office for about half of my lunch anyway.
We're moving to a new office sometime nearer the end of the year, and it's going to have proper spaces to have a break, and a proper cafe with seating. Once we're there I'll stop eating at my desk.
Crap___bag@reddit
I’m a teacher so we don’t have set hours and often take a lot of marking/planning home to do in the evenings. Half an hour at lunch buys me more free time at home so I do it most days, but I wouldn’t do it if my work was all contained in set hours if that makes sense
Curious-Ad5008@reddit
Work in a school so no choice! Hot desk between 3 diff spaces and only get 30 mins. By the time I walk up the road to the shop and back lunch is almost over. Mondays are my admin day so I can get away with a longer lunch.
Pixiebel81@reddit
I eat at my desk without working?
simont410@reddit
I still find this odd, don't you want to get out of the office?
Pixiebel81@reddit
Nope, only if I need something from the shops. I just put headphones in and watch/read something on my phone. Nobody bothers me with work related questions. Also this is just if I'm in the office. If I'm at home I'm walking the dogs
bopeepsheep@reddit
My office is more comfortable than our actual break room, so I shut the door and turn the music up while I'm at lunch. I do keep an eye on email as there are sometimes time-sensitive issues due to the nature of the job, but I only respond to those. Ditto people knocking on the door.
Also I can go home earlier if I do spend any of my lunch break working and some days that is a big bonus.
simont410@reddit
I need a break from the office but I can see the benefits here
bopeepsheep@reddit
I should add: I work 15 mins walk from anywhere that sells food, and I use crutches, so during the winter with bad weather there's little motivation to "just go for a walk". In summer I do pootle down to the gardens though. (Yes, we have gardens.)
TheNecroFrog@reddit
Do I need a break? Maybe
Do I get time for a break? Rarely
simont410@reddit
I couldn't live like that
TheNecroFrog@reddit
To be honest it doesn’t phase me that much. I prefer not to take a break and finish and hour earlier it time allows - especially during the summer when I can get an extra hour on the bike in the afternoon
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Honestly, they are crazy!!
Trash_Panda_Leaves@reddit
I used to take an hour as allowed, and my coworkers treated me as lazy for it because they'd all skipped. It was the only time of day my terrible line manager wasnt breathing down my neck and editing the spreadsheets to take credit for my work
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
You earned that break, no matter what anyone else thought
Trash_Panda_Leaves@reddit
Thank you. I needed that time to get through the day anyways. Job made me really suicidal and led me to file a grievance and quit. My health has never recovered.
HotDoxJumpingFrog@reddit
Al desco. Every day.
I'm in a support role so have to be available the entire day
And_Justice@reddit
I worked support roles for 8 years... this is not the nature of support lol
You are legally entitled to 20 minutes uninterrupted break if you work more than 6 hours. I assume you are also not paid for lunch break? In which instance they have no hold over you.
Take your fucking breaks lol
HotDoxJumpingFrog@reddit
I do take my breaks. My employers are really flexible about timekeeping, and I get paid for every single minute of my work day.
But lunchtime is often our heaviest time of the day so I'll take my breaks at different times. Plus, being at my desk doesn't necessarily mean I'm working. It just means I'm available
And_Justice@reddit
So you do take your lunch, just not at lunch time
HotDoxJumpingFrog@reddit
Sort of. I'll often go to the gym in the morning, or get some outside time late afternoon. That may not be a meal break, but I'm not being robbed of any time
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
That's not really a lunch break if you have to be available, is it? Do you get paid for the entire day?
HotDoxJumpingFrog@reddit
Yes. I'm paid for my entire work day and my employers are very flexible in other regards. I'm not getting a raw deal
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Ahh, that's cool, then. Just I know some employers aren't so decent. Glad yours is, though
Civil-Koala-8899@reddit
Not the person you’re replying to but I also work a job where I have to be available all day (doctor) and we get paid for our lunch breaks
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
That's fair enough if being paid the whole shift, and just grabbing a bite when you get time
Civil-Koala-8899@reddit
Yeah it just depends on what’s going on. I’m usually able to go off somewhere and have a break, but just always have to have my work phone on me and be prepared to advise or rush somewhere as needed.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Totally get that with your job, emergencies or whatever can of course happen at any moment. Hopefully the other fella gets paid for his lunch, too
PrinceEdgarNevermore@reddit
Partner runs small IT consulting company - everyone gets lunch break including support desk. If they want to stay in the office and sit on a computer, sure - but grab that spare laptop and sit by the spare table/desk, don’t even think about doing work.
pokebuds17@reddit
I'm also in support and I make sure to be away from my desk for the full hour everyday just to make sure I get my lunch in full lol. They got 7.5hrs of the rest of the day to ask for help
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Are you expected to stay available even during lunch?
MATE_AS_IN_SHIPMATE@reddit
I go for a walk with a colleague, or go to the pub, or go for lunch with my other half.
TechnologyGrouchy679@reddit
usually at my desk but then I have my own office so no disturbances
LopsidedBell7339@reddit
Being forced back into the office 4 days a week so yeah I will be taking my lunch away from my desk.
I'm a people manager for a team of analysts that work alongside operational teams and provide expert advice. Going back into the office is going to mean we become 1st line IT hardware/software support as well as we "know about that stuff" and people can't be arsed to call the actual IT help desk.
I will be putting regular breaks and eating away from workstations into my teams well-being goals as well.
They don't pay us for that half hour so they can piss off for a bit if they want something and come back later.
RevolutionaryLaw393@reddit
I always leave the building! If the weather's nice I'll go for a walk with my fave co workers, if the weather is crap we'll go to a coffee shop. I'll eat my lunch at my desk after my unpaid lunch break is over. Why tf would I spend an hour unpaid sat in that office 😭
CarDry6754@reddit
I go outside for my lunch and I take my full lunch entitlement unless there is a good reason why I shouldn’t be doing that (a lunch break is deducted from my pay after all). I always avoid eating lunch at my desk as it gives no work/break separation and people will be encouraged to approach me about work questions whilst I am on break or I’ll feel the need to display to people I am on break and that’s why I am not currently working hard at my desk.
Glittering_Stock3475@reddit
If I'm in the office I use my lunch time to go home for the day and I continue working from home. I'll make lunch as and when at home and eat it away from my desk. We don't have a set amount of office hours to do so I just do about 4, sometimes more or less, depending on what time I get into the office
If I'm WFH that day, I'm up and about from my computer regularly, but when I decide to make and have lunch I'll eat away from my desk
Midnight-Messiah@reddit
What's a lunch break?
Far-Hospital-9961@reddit
I wfh and make a point of putting myself in ‘out of office’ on Teams most days and going out to get lunch.
Occasionally if I’m super busy I’ll have something at my desk as a one-off.
heartpassenger@reddit
Yeah I’m similar. If I don’t close my laptop then who will? I have to lay down boundaries. Similarly I keep my teams status “offline” 100% of the time so nobody can get weird and start tracking when it goes idle. Not their business, I get my shit done, that’s what matters.
Bernardozila@reddit
If you’re always offline, then how are people supposed to know if you’ll answer a call?
heartpassenger@reddit
They don’t. I schedule calls, I don’t take random teams calls out of the blue. If they want to speak to me urgently I have a work mobile.
munday97@reddit
They don't which is perfect because then they message and if you want to speak to them you can dial them in. It puts you in control.
Flimsy-Detective7643@reddit
I wfh too and lucky enough to have a dedicated box room office, I have my lunch booked out as a meeting to myself everyday and I go sit downstairs and do some painting by numbers
wongl888@reddit
I use a mouse jiggler to keep my teams green when I am away from my desk so no one knows if I am at my computer or not.
Far-Hospital-9961@reddit
But I’d rather just be honest and maintain my boundaries. I’m entitled to a lunch, so I’m going to take it. I work hard and manage my time well (unless we’re super swamped once in a blue moon) and so I have the capacity to take a full lunch generally anyway.
Also, you’ve got to be careful with that. A lot of companies run software that identify that kind of hardware now.
wongl888@reddit
It is. It about being honest or not. It is about not being tracked.
CockroachNo803@reddit
Same! Today I went to the salon even.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Fair play, that’s disciplined
clovenheart1066@reddit
Depends on the time. I only get 30 mins, but i have colleagues when even if i literally have my nose touching pages of a book will start talking at me. So if they are there, i will sit in my office, but if theyr not i'll go to the staff room...i will also leave the staff room and pretend i've finished if they rock up, which they shouldnt because they should have left by that time!! But they do.
SpectreSingh89@reddit
As a machine operator away. We have a canteen with free tea / coffee vending mc. We aren't allowed to eat in the factory due to FOD. Water is only exception.
Flimsy-Strike5696@reddit
It depends:
in the office I will eat lunch in the break room,
when wfh I will eat at my desk and use that lunch hour doing some housework so I dont have to do it after work hours.
Polz34@reddit
I used to eat at my desk but people would still come in and be like 'oh you're on your lunch' and then keep talking 'shop' - then I tried one of our social areas, but same issue (even if I put in headphones) - our current doesn't have anywhere outside really so now I sit in my car for my lunch. Moving to a new site in July and there is a huge restaurant and outside seating area along with a roof terrace, I'll be spoilt!
Legitimate_War_397@reddit
This happens to me, I respond “sorry on lunch ask me later”. Always makes a manager laugh when he hears me doing it to people.
DebonairKnit@reddit
I wish I was this assertive 😭
ND_CuriousBusyMind@reddit
Good for you. Most lunch breaks are unpaid.
Legitimate_War_397@reddit
Which is exactly the reason why I tell them to ask me later, because I don’t get paid to help them on my break.
MoodyBernoulli@reddit
So frustrating.
You interrupted me as I was about to take a bite of my sandwich. You keep talking to me as I keep trying to take bites of my sandwich.

Eat whilst working. At home or in the office.
linkheroz@reddit
I leave my desk and I WFH. I'm not paid to be working during my lunch, so I won't be.
nicdic89@reddit
Nope, I step away for a whole hour, I wfh and so does my husband so we have lunch at the same time so it’s nice, plus I don’t get paid for it, so I’m having that time! I do work the odd lunch here and there because we have things going on that cannot be done any other time, but it’s rare and my boss always lets me take the time back elsewhere, so I rack em up and take a random Friday afternoon off lol.
Wulfweard24@reddit

When in the office I like to go to a secluded area where I won’t be bothered and sit for at least half an hour eating and doing something that’s not work (reading, listening to a podcast, or watching a show). Or if the weather’s nice I’ll go outside. I really don’t like eating with my colleagues unless it’s a special occasion and lunch is on the company card…

I'm a social worker and have a lot of freedom in my day. I often eat my lunch in my car whilst driving if I'm going home to work the afternoon, or I eat in the office. However, I'll take my time back at other parts of the day. It really varies where I'll eat and whether I work and eat at the same time, depending how busy I am. Being forced to take a half hour in a cafe would not improve my wellbeing.

I can't remember the last time I got to even take a lunch break, to be completely honest. English people have a horrible idea that it’s good to eat at your desk. This is a lack of respect for others that are trying to work but now have to smell your food and hear you chew. Disgusting. In the rest of Europe we see this as bad manners and disrespect. You would be told to go somewhere else to eat. So yes - don’t eat at your desk.
Glozboy@reddit
When I worked in an office I ate at my desk and watched speedruns on YouTube. Nowadays I have lunch with my wife which gets me away from the laptop.
BeingOtherwise7829@reddit
My last job was as a secondary school receptionist so you'd better believe I'll be going to the staff room for my half hour lunch.
Not about having staff, parents and kids coming up and demanding things from me while I'm just trying to eat my sandwich in peace.
GuaranteeCareless@reddit
Always eat away from desk. I wfh and am self employed. Half the week is travelling or on site and the other half is at home. Usually go for a walk on the beach and take in a Spoons lunch, sometimes take the laptop and stretch it out to 2hours, browse a few shops en route. All in all 5mile walk with a decent vegan chilli and coffee thrown in.
I see it as space to think about things.
I’ve never really been one of the “lunch is for wimps” types. Twats.

Away from desk or you’ll get constantly badgered to do stuff. Also calendar blocked out as out-of-office too to stop people putting in lunchtime meetings.
TikiKie92@reddit
Don’t get those people who sit at their desk and carry on working while they eat. People do it in my office, they don’t get paid lunch breaks, so they’re literally just working for free. I value my time, and myself, far too much to ever do that.
oooohshinythingy@reddit
When I’ve worked in offices I’ve sat at my desk to eat mainly. One job I was fine with it as the manager used to take us to the pub every Friday and get us lunch and a beer or two. A different job, I was a clerk, doing my job, the chief clerks job (no one ever stayed as it was heavy workload, very confusing and stressful to start with) my wage slip was rarely right for all the overtime I did, my own job was part time. The manager was an absolute bitch. One week when yet again there was only me and her there, I got up at 12 and said “Shall I go for my lunch now or should I go 1-2?”Her face was an absolute picture. So off I went and for a couple of weeks I bought a magazine which I never read and went to local pub for a sandwich and a glass of pop. I was bored to death of it by halfway through the first week but I kept it up as long as I could

I used to work a job that would encourage me to stay at my desk during my lunchbreak because I was the only one who answered the phones and everyone else had quit. It was my first salaried job and a couple of my colleagues in another department noticed that my manager would try and bribe me with buying me food so that I'd stay so they started making me physically leave the building for lunch everyday and I'm glad they did, because it was killing me and I wouldn't get paid overtime for it!

I don’t but I’m on a 10 in 9 work schedule (so work 10 days hours over 9 days and get a day off every other week). Rather than finishing an hour later I just skip lunch. It basically feels like a free day off as I was generally eating lunch at my desk before anyway
Zee_has_cookies@reddit
I just sit at my desk because I don’t like the social area. However, headphone go on, monitors are off and back is turned so I’m facing out the window. Most people who ask me if I’m on my lunch will then come back later, but those who don’t get asked why they’re still there and talking. I think I’m pretty well established as a ‘do not disturb’ now so most lunches are peaceful.

I take my lunch - always. This is MY time. You want to talk about work - catch me after my lunch.
In working from office times, I would go for a walk (rain, snow, sunshine), and come back on the dot to my desk. I would eat my lunch on a bench in the park, or while walking if it was too cold/wet. Eating by my desk invited work queries, and canteens were too noisy and similarly- would invite work talk or moan.
I WFH a lot now, but lunchtime is my away from the desk/walk time.

She I'm in the office I normally walk to the shop and eat my lunch at my desk after, so max 15 minutes. I don't mind my job though and have the flexibility to work when I want too, so an extra 45 minutes work yesterday means I'm not sat in my garden on Reddit in the sunshine at 3.15pm.
I do the same with average hours across the week. Some weeks I might work 50 hours, others I might just take a couple of afternoons off because I'm not busy.
I do admit, I'm lucky in the sense that I have that flexibility. I also work in football so it's enjoyable, to the point I do another 10 hours a week as a volunteer at my local grassroots club because why not.

I judge people who work during their lunch break. The ones who say they are too busy or have too much work. It does not make you more important, it makes you look like you have terrible time management and can't handle your workload.
I have people at my job in the same position as me who do overtime regularly or eat at their desks. They keep complaining how much work they have. I am always baffled cuz we do the same job! I used to take my full lunch hour, down to the last second, out of principle. My time, not yours.
I have since switched jobs and now work in a garden office for a small, family run business. For reasons I can't quite articulate other than 'because I want to', I now find myself coming in half an hour early in the mornings and eating lunch at my desk. I absolutely know I can take my lunch hour, go for a walk (which I occasionally do) but it's weird, I think I've hit the employer jackpot in that I just don't mind not taking it!
oscarsowner@reddit
I used to eat whilst working but quite rightly, my director made a decision one day and said everyone needs to go and sit away from their desk for their allotted lunchtime. I get a 30 minute break but to be honest, once I’ve eaten my sandwich and checked up on my personal emails and social media, I’m ready to get back to my desk. I need to eat more slowly 🙄
JustASimpleEgg@reddit
I work retail and I think it's probably seen as a bit unprofessional to be stood at the till stuffing your face with leftover spaghetti, so we all take our breaks in the back room. Does mean we sometimes get interrupted (click and collect orders get kept in the back, one of the shop phones is there, plus the sink and soap) but never for more than the few seconds it takes to grab whatever is actually needed. Most of us very much need our breaks to ignore the hell out of everyone for an hour or so!

Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)

ArcticAmoeba56@reddit
It's not straight forward if I am honest. By the book I am entitled to 1hr lunch, and I should probably be more firm in ensuring I am allowed to take it.
However in reality given the nature of my job, i have a very high demand primary role with pretty inflexible deadlines and multiple secondary roles with their own demands, so I end up using my lunch time at my desk to get secondary role tasks done that i simply cannot complete concurrently when doin my primary.
I could in theory , take my lunch but the trade off would be having do those same tasks at the end of the day, extending my day by an hour or more (over time doesnt exist in my salaried role) ultimately reducing my time at home with my family.

Start my day on time. Start my lunch on time. Have a 'booked lunch break' every weekday in my calendar that shows me as out of office. If I'm at home I lock the pc and walk away, if I'm in the office I go and sit elsewhere. I then finish my day on time. Almost no exceptions.
In the early days I'd work extra hours, start early or work through lunch etc. But now, it's not so important. I'm paid for the hours in my contract. If 'they' want more then cross my palm with silver or other benefit. The work doesn't care, it will be there when I start back.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Respect this tbh. the “booked lunch break” thing is actually smart
SirGranular@reddit
Obviously no one books meetings using the scheduling assistant do they, but by being consistent folk generally learn that you really actually 'do' lunch! I know I sounded like I was very rigid about it, but I'll just move my lunch about if there's a meeting or whatever scheduled, I'll take my lunch outside of lunchtime even, if needs be but I'm taking the time!!
Vixrotre@reddit
I used to when I worked from home, it was much easier to fill the 30 minutes with food, a tea and some PC game or a YouTube video. When we had a dog I'd take him out during that break.
I work in person now and get a 1 hour break and I step away into the staff room, but it's directly behind the counter and we leave the door open cause that's where supplies are too. My break sometimes gets interrupted by a colleague looking for something, asking a question, or a customer noticing me in the back and trying to chat to me. There's been times I've interrupted my break or even ended it prematurely cause a customer got toxic and I had to help a colleague out.
When I got hired in the summer I'd go eat outside, but more often than not someone nearby would start smoking cigs and I can't stand that smell, so it ruined the appeal of al fresco lunches for me.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That sounds rough tbh, it’s like you’re never properly off. I’d hate having my break constantly interrupted like that
Vixrotre@reddit
It definitely makes me feel salty I can't just skip it and get paid for it (it's 1h unpaid and there's no possibility of leaving work early either). I could go on a walk, but I just want to eat my lunch, call my partner and watch or read something. I'd nap if I could, but it's definitely not possible.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that would annoy me too. If it’s unpaid, it should at least be a proper break where you can actually switch off and do your own thing without interruptions
sheepandlambs@reddit
If you eat while working it's not a lunch break.
Tao626@reddit
Legally speaking, the law states you must have your uninterrupted break away from your workstation.
I highly doubt an employee would get in any trouble if they, through their own choice, just decided to sit at their workstation to eat their dinner, even if they're doing no work. When I worked in an office enviroment, I wasn't exactly going outside in the pissing rain when I could sit on my chair at my desk and have a wank instead.
But we know exactly why that's law. So you physically can't work on your break, otherwise bosses and managers absolutely would heavily suggest you can "do that whilst you work". Nope, sorry, I'm on break so I legally have to move away from my desk now that you want me to do things, for your best interests.

You’ve basically trained everyone around you to respect lunch, as you should

I'd certainly hope so. I'm against presenteeism and a good break in the middle of the day should support wellbeing and enable everyone to be refreshed and ready to get stuck in during the afternoon.

Where I work lunch break isn't included in your work hours (9-5 = 7 hours + 1 hour lunch). So if eat while I work then I can leave an hour earlier. If I decide to eat at my desk but actually take that break and get interrupted then I take that time back at the end of the day too. Sometimes though, I just want to go outside, so I do go have a walk about in the nearby park.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)

Always. I don't get paid for my lunch hour, so it's my time and i'll eat away from my desk. I'll even leave the building so i don't get approached. When I’m in the office, I make a snacky lunch I can pick at while working and use my actual lunch break to go out for a walk. I’m lucky now my office is next to a canal so it’s a nice place to walk, but I still did it when I worked in a grotty town. It just so good to get outside and get some air and movement to break up the day. I also do shorter walks round the block on my morning and afternoon breaks. This habit has helped me get my daily step target without having to take time out of my free time. I’m all for working smarter, not harder!
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
I like that approach a lot tbh
ThrowawayParsnip5@reddit
I only take 30 mins for lunch, but I always sit in the canteen, whether it's a packed lunch or not. Before our company moved sites, the office I sat in was very separate from the main office block and was only for 2 people. We were so far out of the way, that there was no passing foot traffic, people would need to make a point of coming to see us if they did need us. i.e you could sit in that office all day and not see a single other soul. And even then, I'd still go to the canteen for my lunch, despite the fact it was quite a walk away from our office.

I used to eat at desk, and had a winter I never saw daylight. So now I intentionally go grab a meal deal and have it outside, even if I only get 20 minutes, it's a line I won't cross - I'd rather skip lunch over eating at desk.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Yup! Always take a full hour now since my crap payrise.
I figure if they don’t think I’m worth paying more, they don’t like my work.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
In my old job that I left a few weeks ago - I basically never took my full lunch. I would eat at my desk. I had to complete timesheets and had chargeable hour targets (35 hours a week) plus I had responsibilities that were not chargeable, so I had to do 40-45 hours of work a week, every week. Not taking lunch meant an extra hour in the day that could go towards those.
I'm now in a new job with no timesheets and overall more interest in your stuff getting done well and on time rather than anyone stressing about exactly how much time was spent each and every day on specific things. There's a nice canteen on site and the whole team goes for lunch together and we take the full lunch break (and maybe even a bit more - nobody is too precious about it). It's a really nice change.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
New place sounds like a massive upgrade
oktimeforplanz@reddit
It really is! It's only been a few weeks and I genuinely can't believe the effect it has had on my general wellbeing to not have to be stressing about whether I've got enough chargeable work and what my timesheet is going to look like at the end of the week.
It came with a hefty pay rise too, which also means, with the drop in hours, I got a pretty massive hourly increase. Same contracted hours, but there is absolutely no expectation of me working more than those hours unless there is a really specific need for it (and even then, they do informal TOIL). Everyone in the office comes in at roughly the start time, and they're mostly gone within 15 minutes of finishing time. It's beautiful.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
You can kinda tell it’s made a difference even in how you talk about it, sounds like such a better place to be

I have noticed that since Brexit there is literally no office etiquette . The farer we are mentally from EU the workspaces started looking like the US. No respect of boundaries, managers interrupting lunches, employees doing the same and thinking this is normal. In Scandinavia for instance, lunch time is sacred and respected. In the Uk, I always eat outside the office to avoid shop talks
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I work from home now but I always eat lunch at the desk, in work hours. Then during my lunch break, I can do what I want.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
I eat at my desk (it only takes five minutes), and then I take my lunch break an hour and a half later. I go to my car, where I have a pillow and blanket in the back seat, along with a portable charger for my phone.
I can't stand people trying to talk to me while I'm on my break, or even overhearing people talk the worst patter you've ever heard in your life (like debating if pineapple should go on pizza, if moist is a gross word). I lasted a week in my office breakroom before going out to the car.
blackberry_sorbet@reddit
Yeah, break room patter is always shite. It's either people having those stupid little debates, gossiping about the one coworker who isn't there, or chatting about what was on TV last night. Usually while talking with their mouths full.
Do you actually go to sleep at lunch time? Or is the pillow and blanket set-up just for relaxation?
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
I have a coworker that, whenever it's slow, asks me if I watched the episode of I'm A Celebrity last night. I have never watched I'm A Celebrity. If I say no, she recounts everything that happened, and she's so excited about it. It sounds like the most boring show on the planet.
I've never gone to sleep, it's just a comfort thing. I get cold easily (hence the blanket) and I can stretch out on the back seat, but car doors are sore on the back, so I have a little sofa pillow behind me.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
I can see why you’d prefer that over a busy breakroom, especially if you just want peace
WalterZenga@reddit
I usually take a full day's break and just come and have lunch at my desk. Works for me.
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
I eat at my desk, generally.
I’m either in the office 2 or 3 days a week, and we have an hour allocated for lunch, but it’s unpaid. However, it’s up to you whether or not you take that full hour.
Personally, I don’t live anywhere close to any of the sites I work at. So I view it as an hour where I’m not being paid, but I’m essentially stuck at work, unless I want to go on a walk. I’d much rather eat at my desk, and leave earlier, than having to leave an hour later because I’ve either walked, or just sat at my desk looking at my phone.
Usually, even if you are at your desk eating. People tend not to bother you, even if I am sending out emails or working on other stuff. So I tend to get a little time to myself anyway.
So in short, no. I don’t want to be at work for any longer than I don’t have to be.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah fair enough, that makes sense given the unpaid hour and distance. If you’re still getting a bit of downtime anyway, it’s probably the most efficient way to do it
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
I’m usually no more than an hour away, but yeah.
I’ve always got work to crack on with, so I just grab some lunch from the Tesco 2 minutes away, sit down, eat it and chop away at work at the same time.
Unfortunately though, it is a very common thing to see in my industry, where people will be eating lunch and still be on Teams calls.
I’ve made it an unwritten rule within our team that no one will schedule meetings between 12-1, unless there’s literally no other choice. That way, it provides an hour of allowing you to have some time to yourself, and you’re able to do what you please with that.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
It’s nice to see a team that values personal time! That 12-1 break sounds like a solid idea
Nervous_Difficulty_6@reddit
It was actually a thing I brought over from a previous job.
Late 2020 when there were still restrictions and all of that going on, we were all WFH full time. The business told all employees not to schedule calls between 12-1 to allow people to get away from their desks, eat their lunch in peace. They also encouraged walks as well. Basically, it was recognised that people were essentially becoming stuck in their own home. That one hour just allowed you to do whatever you wanted, without worrying about another meeting.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that makes a lot of sense, especially in 2020 when people were basically living at their desks. Having a guaranteed hour off calls is a really sensible way to handle it
max1304@reddit

When I worked in a call centre there was a manager there who would eat his lunch at his desk, but with a sign that said “on lunch” and he’d point at it if anyone tried to talk to him. Since it was always a nightmare finding someone to help that would happen all the time. There was a large lunch area upstairs and the office was in central Brighton so everyone found it a bizarre choice

Used to eat while working and I still do if there’s a crisis going on, otherwise I shut everything off and very intentionally go away for 45 minutes or so. The_AJR@reddit
I work hybrid but on my office days, I make it a ritual to take no lunch and then walk to Tesco and get a meal deal. glitterstateofmind@reddit
Depends on what meetings I have that day. I WFH permanently and meet with people all over the world, so sometimes I end up with meetings over the traditional lunchtime slots due to time zones and other people’s availability.
Sometimes I just eat at my desk if things are busy, but other days I might have to pop out for a personal appointment (nails, etc.) because that’s the only time I can get, or a walk, which may take me over the “allotted” hour. Therefore, working over lunch on other days doesn’t phase me. Thats the beauty of flexibility and ultimately it all evens out if I were to add all my working hours up, if not more when you consider the times I’m on early/late.

Nobody will tell you “great job” if you work over your lunch, start early or leave later. It’ll just be expected and taken advantage of.
Go outside or go get a coffee somewhere away from your office.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
So true, working over your break doesn’t get recognized, so better to take it for yourself
goingpt@reddit
I go to my car to get some peace and quiet.
I don't get paid for my lunch hour so why should I work or be around and available for it?
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it's your time to reset, no need to be available during it
harrywilko@reddit
I WFH and I close my work laptop, watch something else while I'm eating then go and read a book (either lying on my bed or in the garden if the weather's nice) until the hour's up.
Helps with my eyestrain and re-concentrating after a long morning.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Love that
LadyInAllPower@reddit
I usually work from home and have got the bad habit of just eating at my desk if I’m working over lunch
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Guess it can be tough to separate when you’re already at home
EarNew7622@reddit
I sit at my desk but stop doing work whilst eating, I just decide to eat whenever I'm hungry too - if something urgent comes up I'll have to jump on it but otherwise I just scroll on my phone. I do go out and sit in my car for a vape nearly every hour for a couple mins but my car is literally right outside my desk (small office) and it's more to just have a few minutes of silence haha. If I had proper breaks as in dedicated time periods for breaks I would definitely venture out for a walk
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Sounds like a solid routine to me
ember_eb@reddit
Eat at my desk so I can spend my actual lunch break on a walk/running errands/stepping away
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Sounds like a good balance
Gashmina@reddit
Yes I take my full hour away from my desk every time. In fairness where I work they don't like you to take lunch at your desk anyway which is good, but even if not I would always leave my desk for my break.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s a solid approach, even if the work piles up, you need that time to reset
Skate_beard@reddit
Usually go to the skatepark for an hour.
Life is too short to sit at a desk any longer than contractually required.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Agreeeed!
cottonblanc@reddit
We're asked not to do that at the office. They encourage you to step away from the desk, and they also provide a canteen and a few breeakout areas.
But I also prefer to get away from the desk when I'm wfh and recharge myself mentally. I don't want to be holed up in the same space the entire day.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
It makes a huge difference, right? Even a quick change of environment helps reset your brain for the afternoon
MyManTheo@reddit
I always go for a walk around Hyde Park listening to Football Cliches. Love my lunch
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That sounds like a great routine
Ldiablohhhh@reddit
I go for a 20 min walk every lunch. Stretch my legs, bit of sun, bit of fresh air. Then last 20 mins of lunch I’ll eat either in my car or at desk depending on weather.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Can't beat sitting in your car, I love it
kbm79@reddit
I eat at my desk.
Ear buds in. Tablet out. Message is loud and clear. 👍
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Headphones in and stops people from interrupting your break, I like that tbh
sulylunat@reddit
I'm lucky enough to work close enough to home that I dont even stay in the office at all, I go home for my lunch. I get an hour which is more than enough to get home, heat up my food, eat, relax for a bit and then go back. Sitting at your desk means you get bothered. Using the staff canteen means you have to still look at the same faces and listen to the same pointless conversations, I would prefer to get away from that.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Totally get that, sometimes it’s just nice to get out of the office and have peace for a bit
Successful_Buy3825@reddit
At the start of my career I’d eat at my desk in order to look busy. Now I make sure I’m away from my desk because I care far less.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Sounds like you’ve just figured out what actually works better for you over time
omelettedreamer90@reddit
The time I get hungry doesn’t always sync up when when it’s ok to take a lunch break- I usually just eat at my desk then take an actual screen break for lunch
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Splitting it like that (quick food, then proper screen-off time) probably works better than forcing both to line up
Rossco1874@reddit
When working from home I have started taking 30 mins away from the screen That can to go play ps for 30 mins or just sit on the couch, The way I see it I am not getting paid for that 30 min break so I am making sure I take it
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Doing something completely different for a bit in the middle of the day is probably what stops WFH feeling like one long stretch
viking_tech@reddit
I work through and eat at my desk, then leave early to avoid traffic. No point in sitting doing nothing for an hour
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
If you can shift the time to avoid traffic it makes sense
flinstoneguy55@reddit
I sometimes go for a walk round the office when I am too pent up but otherwise sit and work through my break. Tho i have a colleague who always takes her break in full away from the desk. Very much aspire to be like that
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that colleague probably has the right idea tbh, proper switch-off helps more than you realise
Saltypeon@reddit
When in the office I used to eat at my desk, then had a bad santa moment while eating and looking for a new car....I leave the desk now. Its safer for continued employment.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah I can see why that changed your habits!
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
I don't but I take the time back at the end of the day and leave 20 minutes early, as do most of my team.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Fair enough
xriotsnotdietsx@reddit
I take the full hour for a walk or to squeeze in a yoga class at the gym next to my workplace but then eat my lunch at my desk
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s a good balance
dryswarm@reddit
I eat at my desk while working then take my entire lunch hour to go for a walk. Absolutely nothing will make me skip my lunch hour save for the most critical emergency that only I can resolve
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Fair play, that’s a healthy way to structure the day
Rare-Grocery-8589@reddit
Most days, I can’t afford to take a lunch break and usually eat while I’m working.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That sounds pretty tough tbh, I hope you do get a chance to properly step away sometimes
insomnimax_99@reddit
Eat while working
I’m contracted to 7 hours a day, if I eat while working then I can get home sooner.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s a practical way of doing it
CrustyHumdinger@reddit
I WFH, usually eat at my desk BUT whilst reading t'internet. I try to get some fresh air as well, either at lunch or after work
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah I think the key is just not being stuck inside all day
CrustyHumdinger@reddit
I also blank out an hour in my diary each day as 'out of office '
Haunting_Hour_4556@reddit
I always took the whole hour unless there was something super urgent. It was genuinely quite depressing how the number of other people taking it dwindled during my time at the office.
I found myself feeling a lot smarter, a lot more invigorated, and a lot more creative when I had had that quick break. Compared to when I bombed on through and just felt busy.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yep, proper breaks really do reset your head more than people realise
Lance_Operazole@reddit
I eat at my desk while working, then take my full break away from my desk.
bee_highlight@reddit
I make more of an effort to not be at my desk during lunch now than when I first started working! I used to work right through lunch and thought it was done since I was still getting to eat - took a while for me to fully realise that I was essentially working for free one hour a day, and I wouldn't get that time back or be paid for it.
If I'm at home working, I usually just go watch the TV or get some housework done during my lunch break - I eat my lunch when I'm back at my desk working.
If I'm in the office, there's usually a bunch of us around and we tend to go out somewhere for lunch, so we're mostly away from our desks there as well.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that sounds like a much healthier setup now bit of separation whether you’re at home or in the office
Background-End2272@reddit
I have always taken a break away from my desk, even when working from home. Even if I go sit on my couch rather than at my desk.
I don't get paid enough to not have a break - irrespective of what I'm paid.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah I think people underestimate how much a proper break helps productivity
Firegirl1508@reddit
I usually eat at my desk and work, but take a walk away from the office as my actual break. If I'm at home, I usually take a proper break then, but mostly so I can quickly make something instead of reheating leftovers.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that seems pretty reasonable
Double_Field9835@reddit
I haven't worked in an office for 10 years now, but always took a daily lunchtime walk unless the weather was truly abymsal. Seemed esssential for for my physical and mental health. I worked on a business park, but close to a bridge that crossed into a little bit of land with a duck pond (this one!), a 10 minute walk away. I'd watch the ducks and munch a sandwich.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
This sounds like my lunch!
elementarydrw@reddit
I do a mixture of both. As I am in the forces, I do not have paid hours, or required breaks for my role. If I am busy, I eat as I go. If I am not busy with time critical tasks, then I may join colleagues in the mess, and chill with a coffee, chat and a paper after before heading back to work, but that is also sometimes dependent on if I know others going to the mess that day.
In my last role and unit, I NEVER ate on the go. It was a really busy stressful role, and I would ALWAYS step away to the mess. There was another guy in my building, same rank, who was in a similar position to me. We would often be in the office up until 7 or 8 at night finishing things, and if we didn't go to the mess for a proper meal at lunch time then we would likely still be there at that time in the evening, but having not eaten, so we made a point to make sure we, and the other guy ate and got away from the desk for a while.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s fair, and it sounds like you’ve got a good sense of when to switch between working through and properly taking a break
tommycahil1995@reddit
I don't work in an office anymore but when I did if it was summer I'd go out for the full hour, or if the weather was terrible I'd eat my lunch at my desk then get my nintendo switch out and put both headphones on and play that for the rest. No one usually bothered me with work stuff and would always play until the hour was done
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
I think it depends a lot on the job and the day tbh, some roles are genuinely non-stop, others it’s more flexible
2c0@reddit
We only get 30 minutes - Just warming something up and eating it takes longer when you have to join the queue.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s the problem with short breaks + shared facilities
Cool-Doughnut-1489@reddit
We have a staff room where you can eat etc but if it is too crowded sometimes I just microwave my food and go back to my designated room for the day and spend my lunch break there. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that I will not be disturbed as people assume I am available for consult since I’m in the room.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s the downside of using a shared room for breaks, people still treat it like you’re working
Sea-Climate6841@reddit
When I’m in the office, I take a walk around Green Park with my sandwich. At home, leave the office for an hour and eat in the kitchen.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s a really good routine tbh, proper break either way
itsShane91@reddit
I try and get out of the office for a walk and then eat while I work, a couple of the other girls do that too, our work try to encourage getting away from your desk. A couple just stay at there desk for lunch and a couple use the communal area. We are all guilty of doing extra work during lunch but none of us mind because our employers are really laid back and don't mind us taking little tea breaks and having a chat 🤷🏼♂️
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that seems like a good balance overall
Spiderplantmum@reddit
I work from home and have an hour lunch, so I use it to do gardening or go to my allotment. It’s the best thing about wfh for me, as when I was in the office I rarely got to take my full break
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s one of the best perks of WFH for sure
Cultural_Tank_6947@reddit
I work from home, and I've picked up a habit that I eat lunch at the dining table. Even if it means my lunch break is only 15 minutes, but I'm not eating at my desk. I'm the sod who will need to tidy it up anyway.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s a good habit honestly. It’s less about the length of the break and more about actually switching off from the workspace for a bit
Blueberry252@reddit
I make an effort to be away from my desk but I don't necessarily take the whole hour. I think I've eaten at my desk maybe once or twice in the last couple of years. Just prefer to keep it separate
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah I get that, it’s nice to keep a bit of separation from your desk even if it’s not the whole break
AbeFromanOnFire@reddit
Never ever work through my lunch and I am the manager of the department. I will occasionally sit at my desk to eat, but I turn off the monitor and sit on my phone or listen to music. The other manager who I share my office with will often work through lunch.
I don't look at emails after I finish either, but have people in my team who are several pay grades below me who are answering emails outwith working hours and it is completely unnecessary. I've told them not to, but for whatever reason they still do it.
Myself and the other manager work full time, but over 4 days instead of 5. On her day off, she still keeps up with emails. She mostly doesn't reply to them, but she reads them all so that when she comes back after her day off, she isn't having to catch up on all the emails from her day off. Would not be me.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Honestly that sounds like a really healthy setup. The expectation to be ‘always on’ creeps in so easily even when it isn’t needed. I get the logic of wanting to stay on top of emails, but it still blurs the line between work and downtime
heyitsed2@reddit
I sit down at my desk to eat lunch and then get up and go back to work.
Supergoose5000@reddit
I make a conscious effort when the weather is nice to leave the building for as long as possible.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
I am the same
MidnightRambler87@reddit
I only get 30 minutes.
I don’t think I’ve ever taken the full 30.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yep, feels like there’s always something pulling you back early
missuseme@reddit
I get an hour but most days I take about 90 minutes
Contract-Spirit@reddit
We have an hours lunch, I eat in circa 20mins and usually take a walk. If it's sunny I'll spend the full hour outside.
I can't fathom staying at the desk all day.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Breaking it up with a walk makes a big difference
Thinking10Thinking@reddit
I eat whilst working. I generally tend to leave work a little earlier as I rarely take my full lunch break.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Its good you leave a little earlier
TheHermeneut@reddit
WFH, always go out for my lunch unless the weather is absolutely rotten. I use it to do top-up food shops so I don’t have to do it after work.
Infamousturd@reddit
1 hour unpaid lunch. Go to the local gym, weight train, come home and eat lunch at my desk whilst working
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
A productive lunch break!
WorldlyMarket7070@reddit
i literally go home, i live 3 minutes away lol
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
That’s ideal tbf, I’d 100% do the same if I lived that close
Some_Masterpiece6639@reddit

Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Thats fair enough!

Both, some days I don't have the time to get away. Other times I will take a long break just to stand outside in the sun.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
I am the exact same
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
I WFH most of the time, and I probably should have lunch away from my desk more, but I don't
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit (OP)
Yeah, WFH makes it really easy to skip proper breaks. I was the same until I started an office job
Wenlocke@reddit
I perma-WFH, and tend to eat at my desk, mostly because our house is small enough that its actually difficult finding somewhere that isn;t my desk to sit and eat
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
It's hit the time of year I can work from the conservatory, so thankfully I now have a gap between 'my office' and the rest of the house.
BUT.. it's really nice in here at the moment, so I also like to sit and have lunch here
plopmaster2000@reddit
Go for a walk!
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
That normally happens before and after work with the dog.
Necessary_Review_870@reddit
We have an hour paid lunch so I take the full hour. Everyone else in the office seems to eat lunch at their desk or take a quick walk.
Yikes44@reddit
I always take a screen break. Where I work you have to take at least 30 min if you work a whole day.
VolcanicBear@reddit
I WFH, I eat at my desk but that's because 4 days a week lunch is spent exercising.
The other lunchtime (Monday) is spent prepping the rest of the week's lunches.
Gorf1@reddit
I always step away, even when I’m working from home.
It’s been reinforced by my recent days in the office where a new arrival has been eating his reheated food from a glass dish with metal cutlery. It’s loud enough that the clients I’m phoning can hear it.
SmartSweetnSassy@reddit
I always go for a walk even if its just around the building. I have a park where I can walk, next to my work and I take every minute of my breaks away from the desk, screens and colleagues. I like my colleagues, but I need to hit the reset button.
sleepyprojectionist@reddit
I have to.
I work in a clean room.
