People who have had piercings - when did you decide to take the jewellery out for good?

After 16 years of having my tongue pierced , because I'd always wanted to be like Scary Spice, I am debating taking it out not for good. Luckily I've never had any damage to my teeth enamel like some people end up with, but I'm starting to wonder if it looks right as I age.
disco_biscuits_84@reddit
I’m 41 and still have piercings which include my vjay jay 😂 don’t plan on taking them out
Loose_Avocado4670@reddit
I can't even imagine the pain of getting that....area done.
Classic-Wafer-7838@reddit
Same! I've always loved the look of nipple piercings but I imagine it's agony so I never plucked up the courage!
DisloyalMouse@reddit
They were probably my most painful piercing, but I love them and can’t recommend them enough. If you want them you should 100% go for it!
Classic-Wafer-7838@reddit
What was the healing process like?
Cartographer_Hopeful@reddit
From experience, do not clean them with TCP
DisloyalMouse@reddit
It takes ages. Like 9-12 months. Though most of that is fairly painless. The initial healing you have to baby them a bit. Plus I never really appreciated how much my boobs touch things everyday until they were freshly pierced. But honestly after the first few weeks they calm down a lot and after the first few months it’s just looking after them as they heal from the inside out, so they look healed but aren’t.
damned-n-doomed@reddit
Yeah it will be the most painful 5 seconds of your life but I love mine.
I only got one done though and can’t pluck up the courage to get the other done.
DisloyalMouse@reddit
Girl…do ittttt (if that is what you want). You’ve already got one done. You can totally do it lol.
disco_biscuits_84@reddit
It’s not bad tbh

RIP your inbox
kifflington@reddit
I see what you did there
disco_biscuits_84@reddit
I don’t reply 🤣🤷🏼♀️
phantom_phreak29@reddit
Ha ha I imagine that will no doubts be for the best
AirSorvete@reddit
I'm curious... just how painful is the vjay jay one?
I considered the old willy piercing but some people get weird about them (naturist... they're still stuffy about that sort of thing)
disco_biscuits_84@reddit
I have 3, the labia, and outer “lips”, one either side
Tbh it stings when first pierced but it’s not bad, mind you I’ve had them for over 20 years
Luvlymish@reddit
44 with my clitoral hood done here, 23 years later and I don't want to take any of mine out.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
I have questions
Ultra_Leopard@reddit
I took my belly button piercing out when I was 24. It's nearly 20 years and I still could wear one if I wanted as it never healed over.
CactiPrincess@reddit
Jealous, I got mine pierced and it WOULD NOT heal, spent like 12 months and it was just a migrating oozy mess 😂 now I have a weird scar there several years later 🙃 same with scaffolding in my ears. Tried both sides. Neither would stick.
kifflington@reddit
I had my nose pierced when I was a student. I graduated in the 90s when having a visible face piercing was problem when job hunting so on my graduation day I removed it just before queuing for the grad photos. I was going to throw it in the little lake on campus but my mother, who had HATED that piercing, quietly took it out of my hand, wrapped it in a tissue and put it in her purse.
Phases of life.
Common_Reading_8058@reddit
My mum hates tattoos and piercings, but I begged her for my nose done at 11/12. She said yes as long as I never got any other piercings on my face (emo me wanted my lip done). 20 odd years later and I still have the nose ring and no other piercings on my face just like the promise I made!
_poptart@reddit
I did my GCSEs in 1998 and went out on a three day bender after my last exam. My mother had always said she would disown me if I pierced my nose but, me being 16 year old me, decided to get it pierced in a small hippie shop in town.
Anyway, I finally return home and she’s hanging washing out in the garden. I’m trying to talk to her without showing her my right nostril. She notices something is up and when I finally show her she says “Oh that looks nice dear”.
She’s been gone 10 years now, and I still have my nose pierced at 44.
lacksfocusattimes@reddit
A friend of mine pierced her own nose in a pub toilet when we were about 17. Pissed, of course.
_poptart@reddit
Eeek - I’ve pierced my own and my friend’s ears (30 years ago, and yes, probably pissed) but NOSE? That’s a whole lot of gristly skin to push through
lacksfocusattimes@reddit
The anaesthetic properties of cider helped, apparently.
thekittysays@reddit
I did mine 3 times. They are not well positioned lol
WonderfulThomas@reddit
How small are the hippies?
IcedWarlock@reddit
My mam didn't want me to get mine done.
My dad has always just been like hey it's your body you do you, so my aunty took me to get it done.
When I finally went home after my dad's weekend my mam said oh it's nice it suits you. And when I had to take it out when I was pregnant with my youngest son (for some reason I ended up allergic to all my jewellery body's are so weird) the first thing my mam said after having him was are you going to get your nose stud back now you look weird without it.
Had it since I was 14, 42 now and don't intend on taking it out till I really have to (ie my life revolves around hospital visits and its detrimental to keep it in for safety reasons)
notalapcataboobcat@reddit
I got mine at 14 too!
Underage and needed parents permission so my Mum had to come in with me. 46 now and still wearing it with no intention to remove it
PsychologicalDish430@reddit
That's a lovely memory.
bookishnatasha89@reddit
I know someone who's mum PAID him to take his tongue stud out.
dallasp2468@reddit
Did she put it with your baby teeth 😊
kifflington@reddit
No idea but knowing her, probably yes!
cahrage@reddit
So did you end up putting it back in at some point?
kifflington@reddit
No, I left it out and within a year or so couldn't even see the hole any more. I was told a nose piercing would epithelialise and so would be there forever but I believe it's completely gone.
Capable_Tip7815@reddit
When my daughter was old enough to talk and ask why I had earrings in my boobies. I took them out a few years before that as my then boyfriend caught a piercing on his watch. Then got them redone after I had finished breastfeeding my daughter.
kittyditties@reddit
I had my nose pierced when I was 18. It lasted about 3 years because someone told me it made my nose look like a witch’s and for some reason, that person’s opinion mattered to be back then!
I’ve had a belly bar since I was 20 - I’m now 36. I think some people might consider me ‘too old’ for it now, but I genuinely still love it and these days, I’m not so invested what other people think!
All other piercing (various up my ear lobe and tragus), just disappeared over time and closed up.
ChelseaMourning@reddit
I had a labret piercing when I was 16. Took it out when I was 20 because it randomly got inflamed one day and I was kind of over it anyway. That was 20 years ago and I still have a visible hole/scar.
swibbles_mcnibbles@reddit
I took out all my piercing jewellery about 10 years ago (not for any particular reason, just lazy when it came to replacing it all) I completely forget that my tongue was ever pieced. Belly button is probably the only one that remains obvious. Even my ear tunnels shrank back.
I'm enjoying my old hag era now and can't be arsed with jewellery
Dreadheaddanski@reddit
I'm 35 and i have 22mm tunnels, my septum, left nostril and right eyebrow still pierced
smb3something@reddit
Still got my tongue ring in in my mid 40's, finally a 'normal' length so it's not rubbing my teeth. The ones in my ears and nips have gone (I'm a guy). Miss the nip rings, but don't want to deal with re-piercing scar tissue.
faucilien@reddit
I’ve had numerous piercings through my teens and early 20s.
Lobes at 11, nostril at 13, second/third lobes 15, septum 16, tongue at 17, medusa/middle top lip at 19 and various ear cartilage piercings through my 20s.
I took my septum and tongue piercing out whilst at uni but I still have all the others. I’m kinda waiting to feel “too old” but it hasn’t hit yet. I’m 29. The ones I have retired I just didn’t like anymore. I don’t think I’ll ever take them out purely for age, just if I fall out of liking them. I have dainty jewellery in them all and I work a corporate job, but I work as a data engineer and even my “head of” manager has tattoos. Nobody seems to raise an eyebrow here. I don’t have unnatural hair colours nowadays but I have unnatural placement of colours. I always dress smart if I’m at a work event.
Anyway, unless my dream job meant I couldn’t have them or I started to dislike them, I shall keep them. My partner is a few years older than me and still has some of his piercings, including a nose piercing🤷🏻♀️
SpecialistGas8262@reddit
Never!
I had to take my navel out because I was pregnant, the piercing isn't viable anymore, but I'm still not sure I'm done with it forever or getting it repierced some point. I've kept all my ear piercings.
X2epsilon@reddit
You know I completely forget I have mine most days and I am 48
JohnLennonsNotDead@reddit
Does it not rub on the inside of your fly though?

Don’t google a Prince Albert piercing on a work device
jaynoj@reddit
Prince Albert has entered the chat
DollySheep32@reddit
Partly for my career - in my profession (healthcare) its generally accepted that for hygiene reasons the only jewellery you wear are small stud earrings. So I retired pretty well all my ear piercings besides my triple lobes.
I chipped my teeth on my tongue piercing and my dentist told me my lip piercing was damaging my front teeth so bye bye.
KatVanWall@reddit
I’m 46 and have had my lip piercing 20 years or more. 99.9% of the time I forget I have it. It’s never caused me any problems and I have no intention of taking it out anytime soon
abyssal-isopod86@reddit
I'm nearly 40, I have had my snakebites since I was 22 and last year for my birthday I got my medusa done.
I have 6-9 piercings in each ear.
And I have an intimate piercing.
I will rock my piercings right up to the day I die.
Sophiarghhh@reddit
I’m 37 and have had snakebites since I was 16! Never take them out!
Tiddlybean@reddit
I got my bellybutton pierced when I was 15 and took it out when I was pregnant at 30.
pgnlzbth@reddit
I’m 49 and have an ear bar which I got done at 27 that I can’t ever imagine taking out. My belly button has been pierced 3 times, once in my 20’s, once between pregnancies and finally again at 40. I got my nipples done a couple of years later and my nostrils… they are all very much part of ‘me’ and I don’t plan on taking any of them out 🤷🏻♀️
Classic-Wafer-7838@reddit
I took my belly button bar out a few years ago, because at the time I was wearing high waisted trousers a lot and it kept catching and I didn't think I'd ever wear a crop top again. Kind of wish I hadn't, though, as the hole never really closed over completely and now it's just kind of there, being annoying.
I am now wearing crop tops again, but not with my belly button out!
oohliviaa@reddit
I’ve also got a “hole” from when I took my belly bar out when I was pregnant at 30 (after having it for 15 years and didn’t put it back in). Kind of miss it but not enough to do anything about it
icarusisnotdead@reddit
23M with 12 current piercings, only ever retired 2 of them.
One was a helix piercing I took out because it was wonky (did it myself as a teen) and the other was a top belly button piercing which I decided I didn’t like, and retired it in favour of keeping the bottom one in.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
I had my nose pierced back in oh god, 2005, I still have it to this day. I begged my mum for around 2 years for it and she let me over summer. I remember her fighting my teachers about keeping it. I have a medusa and labret too since 2009 alongside a couple ear piercings. I did worry about damage to my teeth, but I somehow don't - amazed as well because as a baby, the amount my son would accidently headbutt me in that general area, ouch! I honestly forget I have them a lot of the time now, sometimes get folks strike up a conversation about them and it's a "oh yeah, I have those..."
I have some more planned now and I'm creeping to mid-30's. Mostly some extra ear holes but a couple facial ones. I had a period where I took my current ones out, I felt and looked alien to everyone. My mum and son demanded I put them back in because I didn't look like me.
letitiatink@reddit
I'm 37. I've had two tongue piercings for around 20 years. I have no intention of taking them out. I love them as much now as I did when I first had them.
SwordTaster@reddit
I'm 32. I have vertical snake bites, a stretched septum, nips, ear lobes, and helix. The only ones that I rarely wear anything in are my ear lobes due to not having any jewellery that's super comfortable to sleep in, and I hope never to need to fully retire any of them no matter how old I get. I'm gonna be the weird grandma one day, lol
GroceryPlastic7954@reddit
My eyebrow was pierced twice. Got ripped out twice.
Mikon_Youji@reddit
I had my tongue pierced when I was 21 and took it out around 3 years later because I got sick of having it there.
CozJeez85@reddit (OP)
I don't think I've ever had food caught in mine luckily.
Jumpy-Scallion-9463@reddit
After about a couple of years, when I realised virtually no one was ever going to see it.
CozJeez85@reddit (OP)
Ooooh you had a rude one!
Jumpy-Scallion-9463@reddit
I prefer "intimate" 😊
Famous_Address3625@reddit
I had one done many many many years ago, when it was still pretty uncommon. I had to take it out when I gave birth….37 years ago! Didn’t put back in. Don’t know what the protocol would be now?
Jumpy-Scallion-9463@reddit
The mind boggles. TBH giving birth was never going to be an issue for me.
Jumpy-Scallion-9463@reddit
Yep.
PenSuspicious8512@reddit
40 years old and I’m probably going to keep my ear stretching for life
zer0c00l81@reddit
Only got one piercing, my tongue. got it at 17 and now mid 40s. same jewellery from the initial post swelling change.
Taken it out only once in the time, for an MRI, it was super weird and I couldn't talk properly as I was so used to the weight and space it takes up, got a fat tongue so its a big ol and wider bar.
Had a labret from about 2000-2006 but took thet out as it was messing me gum up.
Stinkinhippy@reddit
Had my labret done at 19.. stopped bothering with it once I grew my beard out at like 24
JimmyBallocks@reddit
I got my left ear pierced when I was 17, then wore an earring on and off over the years.
I’d go without it when I had an office job with a wanky dress/appearance policy, then start wearing it again as soon as I didn’t.
Funny thing is, the hole never healed, so I started wearing it again in my forties after getting out of the rat race.
I got a second piercing on the tragus of my right ear about the same time, but had to remove it for an MRI and couldn’t get it back in afterwards. That healed over pretty quickly.
Sadly last year I took another job where the boss isn’t keen on piercings, and I had a probation period, so I took it out again for pragmatic reasons.
Writing this has made me tempted to go out and get a new earring.
MermaidBeast@reddit
Take them out if you want to.
I’m 33, a teacher and I have a lip and septum and several other ear piercings.
I’ve only taken them out when they rejected. I still love them and don’t feel any pressure to remove them.
Weirdly I think my piercings were an extra little reason I was hired in my role. To be down with the kids. (Not that I will ever be down with the kids, I teach maths and am very much a nerd).
Emasapien2@reddit
I had tunnels and lots of piercings as a teenager into my 20s. When I started my family I gradually started removing them. Then I got to 38 and decided to stretch my ears again as they never fully closed meaning I couldnt wear any earrings. They are only 8mm but i can wear pretty tunnels now. Then I started getting my ears pierced again. Ive quite a few piercings now and I love them but ive just kept it to ear piercings. Its like I rediscovered my teenage self.
Champagne_Bunnny@reddit
Don't worry about what other people think. If you're thinking "I'm too old for...... Xyz" stop, slap yourself and push that thought right out of your head.
snowdrop0901@reddit
Someone from my work had their eyebrow peirced when they were young....early 20s max....took it out at somepoint late 30s/early 40s.....just turned 51 and realised they missed it and just put it back in AND got another one.
90% of the time i forget i have my ears done, and i only take my nose one out when i have a cold...i have yanked it out when blowing my nose too many times to keep it in, but always end up putting something back in after.
Whilst im only 26 myself, one of my helix is 12 and dont imagine myself taking it out anytime soon. But thats also external and not internal jewellery.
ximina3@reddit
I got my bellybutton pierced when I was 16. I'm now 33.
About 8 years ago or so I swapped the belly bar I had in for an eyebrow bar, because high waisted fashion was in and I was sick of the belly bar catching on everything. Eyebrow bars are much shorter and thinner, so it's a lot most subtle that I even have my belly pierced and most of the time I totally forget. I've now gained so much weight that I don't have the confidence to wear anything that shows that part of me anymore, and even if I did I can't really put anything else in it because the piercing has shrunk around the eyebrow bar. I really should take it out. But that feels like letting go of a part of myself...
_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_@reddit
I think my navel ring was accidentally ripped out, though I can’t remember exactly. I was probably…. 28, had it for 15 years. Never bothered to put it back because I was over it and I don’t miss it at all.
Ok_Kale_3160@reddit
I had 2 eyebrow piercings. One bit of jewellery fell out or something and I never bothered to replace it. I decided to remove the remaining one maybe 20 years after I got it. It was quite a harsh look and I wanted to be softer. I didn't feel like it was 'me' anymore.
11pagesIn@reddit
I'm 53, I have 11 ear piercings plus belly button and nipple bars. No plans to take them out, ever!
One day I might shock the nursing home staff when they have to undress me.
AmIRightPeter@reddit
Still actively planning piercings in my very late 30s… it depends what you want, and how you feel?
I feel unhappy when having to take a piercing out for whatever reason, so for me it makes sense to keep them. But if you feel relieved or happier with it out, then it makes sense to take them out?
Just don’t be fooled by an age being somehow “inappropriate” because it isn’t. You do whatever feels right for your body.
Gremlin_1989@reddit
Same on terms of age and wanting to get more. I only have my ears done at the moment. My belly bar was stretched too far and closed when I was pregnant, I'm toying with getting it re-done but I'd have to loose weight first to be comfortable with doing it.
DisloyalMouse@reddit
Girl, I’m a similar age and still have mine from when I was a teenager. You should 100% get it again if you want it. See this as your sign! Maybe it will give you some more body confidence. I’m sure it would look cute :).
Gremlin_1989@reddit
Thanks! I will do it at some point! I really enjoyed having it before.
DisloyalMouse@reddit
They’re so cute. It’s possibly my fav piercing (well it changes day to day between that and my nipples - and sometimes my tongue). I hope you feel comfortable to get it again soon :).
AmIRightPeter@reddit
If it helps, piercers literally don’t usually care about your shape or size, they just care that the anatomy is right, it looks good and you take care of it.
Gremlin_1989@reddit
lol it's not even that, it's totally me! It might help me to be more confident and not so worried about covering up so much.
GrownDandilion@reddit
3 months after getting toung done I gave up as I kept swallowing the ball and decided it was time to stop injesting jewelery. My ear scaffold I kept for a year. Impressed you managed 16 years
CozJeez85@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I have only ever swallowed one bobble which I am surprised by.
InkedDoll1@reddit
I ate one wholesale after taking it out for an MRI scan and evidently not screwing it back on tightly enough. Didn't even notice for a good couple of hours!
MaxieMatsubusa@reddit
At least you didn’t swallow it before the MRI scan…
HarketSavoy@reddit
My scaffold just never healed after 9 months. It was still painful to sleep on and had bumps. I just took it out.
Euphoric-Wall-2576@reddit
My helix piercings were like this. Took about 2 years to fully heal. It wasn't a fun time sleep-wise.
AmIRightPeter@reddit
Complex cartilage piercings usually take 1-2 years to fully heal. Assuming they are done correctly and you have the correct anatomy.
TheHeianPrincess@reddit
Damn, I’ve had mine for 16 years and still going strong! Even though the place I had it pierced was affectionately nicknamed “Scabacus” 🤣
LumilyEmily@reddit

Removed my tongue piercing after having it for 14 years… finally cracked a tooth by accidentally chomping on it (drunk. pizza involved) and subsequently removed it.
Took me a good couple weeks to relearn how to eat without it.
Can still get a tongue bar in 5 years later. Not put it back but periodically test it. Idk why.
BigPidgim@reddit
I have a septum, nose ring and a nipple piercing. All over 6 years old. I'm pushing 30 and have no plans to take them out.
I did consider removing my septum, due to how most people perceive them, but I still like it - so I'm keeping it until I no longer want it.
BaumFrosch@reddit
I had a pierced nipple and I didn't have much of a choice as I had it ripped out whilst playing rugby. I normally took it out but forgot until someone from the other team reminded me. My shirt was a bloody mess.
emiliewarrendahmer@reddit
I had my tongue pierced when I was around 16, then I got braces a year or two later. Somehow when I was talking the top ball of the tongue piercing hooked over the top of my brace on my front teeth and in a stupid panic I pulled my tongue out and it split my tongue in half. It traumatised me and the friend I was with at the time🤣 after my tongue had healed I thought never again (especially with braces)
Street_Coyote_179@reddit
I took my belly piercing out when I got pregnant at 39.. I was very sad to see it go. I’ve vaguely considered having it redone but I usually think about the couple of times it got infected and decide I can’t be bothered to deal with that in my 50s.. my stomach isn’t as flat as it was in my 30s so maybe it’s best left in my past. Still got 3 ear piercings in each ear but don’t often wear earrings.. my lip piercing only lasted a few weeks before I took it out because it was a pain to deal with when I was playing roller derby.
coolbeanzzzzd00d@reddit
I’ve had my nostril and septum pierced since I was like 17. I’m in my 30s now and pregnant. I’ve removed both due to some crazy pregnancy symptoms (constant boogers, nasal congestion, and nose bleeds) but fully intend to get them redone when it’s over. My face doesn’t look like mine without them.

Had my tongue peirced from about 14 years old and took it out this year at 25 mostly because I kept smacking the backs of my teeth with it but also just stopped liking the look of it as much. I still have my belly button peirced but it looks like I have 2 belly buttons when I take it out so that one is staying.
Jolly-Avocado0@reddit
I haven't yet. I've had a few that I had to take out because they didnt heal well, but I have all the others and forget they're there most of the time. It would feel wrong to remove them, now.

I removed the nipple piercing after about five years. In the months before I removed it I'd caught it on the shower door several times, and my car door. Ouch.
CozJeez85@reddit (OP)

Ha. Mostly after they fell out and I couldn't be asked to replace them.
My wife's in her 40's and still proudly rocks her lip ring however.

mid to late 20's, I just became a different person, and they didn't represent who I wanted the world to see anymore.
(Lip, Nose, scaffolding, stretched lobe)
The lip hole is still there, like to stick a paper clip through it every now and again for fun.
Also, still have my nipple done, however its kind of just there, I did it for a dare and have the same ring it got pieced with. its been about 15 years.
Sternschnuppepuppe@reddit
Scaffolding?

The bar across the top of the ear from one side to the other, I think there are loads of different names for it.

Horrible, evil piercing, if you are reading this and considering it... Don't
5 years and it never fully settled.
colmashgla@reddit
45, had my ear done on a rugby tour when I was 15, added more over the years, nipple when I was 23ish, no plan to remove any, especially the nip as I'd never do it again, that is a powerful sensation being pierced.
tumshy@reddit
Had my belly button pierced when I was 13. Finally took it out when I was 35! 😂 Still got my nose pierced though.
Inner-Device-4530@reddit
Had my nips done 20 years ago, one got removed coming through a loft hatch, that was the most painful and bloody thing I have done, and walking into A&E to get stitches in a white t shirt covered in my own blood got me seen pretty quickly. Other is still there.
MysteriousDuck2110@reddit
I’ve got my tongue pierced twice, had them almost 20years (I’m close to 40 now) scary spice was also my inspiration too. Haha. won’t be taking them out, but considering retiring my nose ring. Just can’t decide if it’s ‘me’ anymore. Ear collections will stay, with plans to add an industrial/scaffold when I’m prepared to deal with healing it.
mangomaz@reddit
I took my tongue one out after about 3 years - basically just decided one day it wasn’t worth the risk of chipping my teeth a I didn’t like it that much!
I had dreams for ages that it was still in my mouth - I could ‘feel’ it when I was having dreams.
Didn’t really miss it tbh - I think it actually annoyed me on a subconscious level always having this thing in my mouth lol.
Ivan_Dobsky_MD@reddit
Also a tongue piercing. Had it for nearly 30 years.
Piercings came up as a question for an MRI. Thought it was about time to remove it.
Injurious_Beans@reddit
Still have them at 50 years of age. I didn't realise they came with an expiry date.
BetterCallSeal@reddit
I’m in my 30s and work a corporate job, but I have piercings (nose and scaffold/industrial) and recently got my lobes re-pierced at a larger size to start stretching them. My opinion on piercings has actually reversed as I got older - I wasn’t allowed to have piercings when I was younger (besides the standard earlobes) so now that I’m an adult I’m exercising my freedom to look how I want at last!
NipplesAndNeedlework@reddit
I had an mri on my arm and was told to take them all out. I had a broken arm so couldn’t get them back in and they were too fiddly for my husband, so they stayed out. Sometimes I think about getting my nose redone but it’s been three years now. I can’t be dealing with getting my rook done again because it was savage, but it was cool whilst it lasted. End of an era!
InkedDoll1@reddit
I'm 51 and still have nose, tongue and lip. I actually took my lip one out just before i got married in 2014, and had it put back in in 2020. I have no immediate plans to get rid of any of them.

I took out my dermals as they were endlessly painful.

I got my belly button done at 21, nose the year after then my eyebrow and lip done when i turned 30. Took them all out before I was 40. I had them all redone and extra ones in my ears last year. I was 50 a few weeks ago. I’m at the point in my career where I’m not customer facing and no one cares what I have pierced as long as I’m clean and smart. They won’t be coming out now.

skatemoose@reddit
Mid 30s had most of them since mid-late teens and got one that had closed after a hospital visit repierced last year. I don't plan on taking them out, ever. Don't really understand the age angle tbh, why does your age matter with piercing?

I’m 28 and work in an office, have both nostrils, my septum and my Medusa done and I forget they are there most days 😅 Don’t think they’ll be coming out any time soon, in fact I don’t think I’ve seen myself without at least one face piercing since I was 16
Opposite_Radio9388@reddit
I took out my lip and tongue piercings when they were wearing away at my tooth enamel.
I don't remember why I retired my VCH. Probably due to a hospital stay and I wasn't invested enough to use a retainer.
I retired my ear lobe piercings because I never liked the look of earrings on me; I only got them pierced because it was the done thing for young teen girls.
hyper-casual@reddit
At one point I looked like I'd been a victim of some sort of shrapnel attack I had so many piercings.
I took most of them out in my early 20s to get a better job, and then took them all out when I became a teacher.
Ended up changing career so I'm not held to outdated appearance rules anymore
Decided a few years back (late 30s) to get a few piercings again, and while I was at it I put my tunnels back in. They'd shrank down from 26mm to 6mm, but within a few months of wearing them again they were back to 20mm, guess my ears had some sort of elastic memory.
I don't have as many piercings as I once had and there's some I'd not get again due to the healing and/or pain but I feel like now I'm a bit older and more confident I don't really care if people don't like them or think I'm too old for them.
Acraftyduck@reddit
I think my cheek piercings are going to be a permanent fixture on my face unless something happens that forces me to remove them. The holes when they're taken out don't look great and I've had them in for long enough that I don't think they will heal over, like what people like to do to get dimples
faa19@reddit
I got my lobes pierced at 12 & then again at 15. Both times with a guns (bad idea), that plus the nickel containing jewellery I used to wear caused issues and I stopped wearing earrings in my early 20's.
My four cartridge piercings I had at various times between 17 and 22 are still going strong. I'm not planning on taking them out, even though I'm now 40, actively planning some more for the mid-life crisis.
It's your body and your choice, it's okay to change your mind as you get older.

Don’t see me ever wanting to take them out. Don’t even remove them when I went for job interviews previously cos I just forget they’re not a normal part of me. Especially the lip ring. Been there longer than I ever lived without it
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
50F and they’re all still here despite taking them out for good. Got 2nd and 3rd earlobe piercings at 13 & 14 and stopped wearing anything in them since my early 20s. Still there. Had my bellybutton pierced at 20. Removed it in my last trimester at 35 and never put it back on. The thing about it is that it needs to be cleaned from time to time or the hole gunks up. So I can still push a bar through and it’s still there. Apart from the fact that they’ve decided to never close up, they haven’t given me any problems (except for occasional cleaning of the dead skin gunk).

I'm 43 male, I like piercings that suit people. I'm also a runner and cyclist and a bit of a traditionalists I guess , meaning I don't think an ear piercing would suit me, I wouldn't mind an eye brow but be scared of falling over , crashing off bike and getting the piercing caught and ripped. I don't want one that could interfere with breathing so no to nose or tongue for me (plus the hassle of soup or whatever for awhile whilst it heals) So the only other place is genatils for me and I did get a PA standard gauge captive ring but rushed things and Mrs wasn't/isn't into them "grosses" her out the captive bead fell out shortly afterwards over the holidays so by time I could've got it sorted it had already started to close and would've needed re doing so left it out and it fully closed up. I am tempted to try a frenulum piercing with a banana barbell but again Mrs isn't keen so haven't.

I had quite few piercings, ear, eyebrows, lip. Got fed up taking them out and putting them back in multiple times a week while karate training so ended up leaving them out.

I've had a tongue piercing for most of my life. I'm 42 and first had it at 18, it's come out four times, 3 unintentionally and once intentionally, which was last year for an operation. It always healed really fast and always found myself wanting it redone soon after. This is the longest I've been without one and plan on getting it redone soon.
here-but-not-present@reddit
I've got quite a few piercings, and the only time I've really taken them out was due to injury (not caused by them but were too painful to keep while recovering).
If you feel it doesn't really 'fit' you any more, that's fine, go ahead! There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel more comfortable with how you present yourself. But don't do it just because you feel you should.
I ended up getting my tongue repierced (double piercing again as well) a few years ago at the age of 39 as I really missed having them 😅

I took my 8 facial piercings out because I am not allowed to wear them at work and it was to much to bother to put them back in and out every day. And I took my nipple piercings out because they kept on giving me issues, maybe was not done properly.
I still got 4, but they are not visible, or they don't heal, like the septum one is just never heal even if I don't wear it for a full week or even a month.

Belly button was done at 13 and removed at 24.
Lip ring done at 17 taken out at 21 when I got braces
Honestly if you like them and enjoy them and they don't hinder your life? Keep them. I have a lot of ear piercings but a lot less than I had when I was younger. I don't regret anything except the lip piercing, still have the hole from it that while only I can see, niggles in photos for me.

Quiet_surprise79@reddit
I took my tongue out when I had wisdom teeth issues, and the swelling was causing my gums to rub against the bottom tongue bar ball.
I have 5 ear piercings that I don't usually have anything in, although I've started to a little more often again.
I've had my cartilage done several times. The first couple of times it didn't heal properly so I took them out after a few months(done with a gun. Bad move). The last time, I did it with a needle and it was healing, but got knocked out when I accidentally headbutted someone's elbow.
Nose, lip and belly piercings have stayed. I may get rid of my lip one day because it irritates me occasionally, but the rest are fine. It has just clicked that the lip piercing might be one reason why a lot of people think I'm younger than mid-30s though, because it definitely isn't a result of lack of lines or white hairs 😂.

im 37 and have been getting pierced since I was 13. have had near enough everything pierced once or twice but currently only have an ear weight and a couple of genital piercings. ill occasionally wear my septum thats stretched to 5mm and every now and then ill put jewellery in my bridge for a month or so (had it pierced since 15 and wore it constantly for 13 years so it never fully heals over)
I took the majority of mine out because like you I thought they looked abit childish or rather id grown out of them? happy with one or 2 that I feel are my style but couldn't have a face full of piercings again tbh

Latter_Table193@reddit
I've had everything except for my belly button. Everything. Yes, there. I ended up taking bits and pieces out over the years due to having difficulties properly healing them - cartilage piercings mainly but I had a few non-cartilage that rejected. The only ones I removed due to feeling like I'd aged out of them were my snakebites. I got them in my early 20s and I'm now hovering around 40. The only ones I have that are visible now are my nostrils, bridge, septum, tongue and the ones on my ears. About 15 in total all over, down from the near 30 I did have!
Just do what feels right. You can always get it repierced again if you miss it!

I had my nose pierced for a few years, I met my soon to be wife and she wasn't pushy or anything about it but said that it freaked her out a little bit. I kept it another 6 months or so and decided it just wasn't right for me any more and that I'd prefer her to be able to look at me without any "ick" at all.
She was actually pretty worried she'd bullied me into it (which was laughable as I don't think she ever mentioned it once outside of me asking her how she felt about it), needless to say; she hadn't, I just felt it was time for a change. There has been a handful of days I've missed it since but generally I'm happy without it.
I wish my ears were as good as the nose piercing was, they either bleed or swell up anytime I wear earrings ¬¬

At most I had ~17 at once, but now have nothing. My stretched lobes haven't quite healed up, so I can still use a tiny 3mm plug and occasionally do when I feel like it.

I used to have my nose pierced and it looked pretty good and I was told that it suited me.
I got it done when I was 15 in school. I was told by my head of year if I wore a plaster over it it was okay, but this other teacher disagreed and made me take it out before it had healed and It got infected. ( I wasn't the only one with a plaster over my nose, she decided to pick on me for some reason)
When I got home, I tried to put it back in but it was so painful. Eventually, I did it and ever since then I had problems with it constantly getting infected so I just took it out for good.
I thought about getting it re pierced, but I'm currently waiting to hear back about a kitchen position at spoons where due to health and hygiene reasons you aren't allowed face piercings so.
I am thinking about getting a helix, though. Any tips/advice?

I think helix is very hard to heal. I’ve got rook, tragus, nose, forward helix with no issues but failed twice with helix. My piercer also said they’re hard to heal.

I only have ears and my nose done and don’t plan at 36 to remove them any time soon- however my friend is who is in her 55 has just removed her tongue and eyebrow piercing because she said as she gets older she feels like it doesn’t suit her personality etc as much. Obviously the tongue was as obvious at first glance but the eyebrow was and it made her almost change her wardrobe and embrace a new look and direction.
Surprisingly the tongue hole covered up in less than a month and the eye brow piercing holes are barely noticeable (if you didn’t know it was there you wouldn’t) as one hole is on the edge of the hairline of the brow so blends in and the other hole has closed and just looks like a tiny spot/ mark. As this was one her worries. Apparently tongues after many years (hers was done decades ago) can require a stitch in some cases)
eauderecentinjury@reddit
I originally had 16 piercings, including both nipples and a couple of facial piercings.
After 6.5 years I recently retired my nipple piercings - I'm fairly flat chested and like to go braless a lot, and was just a bit over how prominent my nipples were through tight shirts. I stopped being comfortable with that being one of the first things people might notice about me.
All the rest are still with no plans to retire them! I'm 30 now, and having been getting piercings since my first lobe piercings when I was 11.

But do you WANT to take it out for good? Or do you just think you should? Don't worry about what other people may or not be thinking, tbh most people aren't even going to notice and if they do, then their thoughts are their problems, not yours.

Probably 10 years or so I had my tongue and lip in, had to take them out for a dental X-ray and never put it back in again as the tongue was always a pain to tighten up without drooling everywhere. Not long after that ear ones went as well

I've tried a few times to keep them in place but it just never sticks, not sure if my body just doesn't like them or if I'm just too impatient.
Tongue piercing lasted about a week at most, scaffold piercing maybe two. Found both of them a bit annoying and probably never game them the right opportunity to heal properly

I only have the one left (nose ring) after having loads for years. Some I took out because my style became less in your face (no pun intended), like my snakebites.
