How many songs do you have memorized?

Was sitting with my mom in her memory care community during a singalong and wondering what our singalongs will be - Like A Virgin? Eye of the Tiger? Are there any songs we ALL know the words to? Sure as heck won’t be Bicycle Built for Two.

Did you help your kids buy a home? Or let them do it on their own?

Strong agreement here - do not lend, just gift if you can and if you and your wife can come to an agreement. Loans between family members never go well - it’s just a bad feeling that gets worse over time.

My young adult son can’t log in to Experian to freeze his credit. We’ve spent hours on the phone. We have tried snail mail begging for assistance. I don’t even know what the next step is. Lawyer? It’s ridiculous.

What age do you want to live to?

Same. Read an article that said most doctors refuse life-extending treatments for themselves after 75. They know. (“How Doctors Die” by Ken Murray, MD)

Just checking in.

For the nth time I started laundry in the evening, forgetting I want to pass out by 9pm. Trying to stay awake to get the stupid clothes in the stupid dryer.

Do you want any of your parents' stuff? If so, what is it and why? If not, why?

My parents had beautiful antique furniture from my grandmother, but after twenty years of sitting in their house at 80 degrees with mold problems and unkept litter boxes, little of it was salvageable. I’m still angry about that.

Are you US? If so, you’ll be unconscious and won’t remember a thing. Prep is obnoxious, but TBH I hate the fasting more. Good job taking care of your health!

I needed a new shoppers discount card at my local grocery store so I went to their customer service desk...

How many of you homeschooled your kids (or still are)?

We did for a couple years because youngest was struggling with kindergarten. He went back for third grade and stayed in public school until he graduated. I think probably he needed to wait an extra year before starting kindergarten in the first place, but that’s 20/20 hindsight.

Tri-Care Health Insurance

CrocusCat@reddit

Tricare for Life is AMAZING. My elderly parents pay nothing for medical after bills go through Medicare + Tricare, and their prescription costs are negligible. Stay away from Medicare Advantage plans; you won’t need them. My parents do need additional dental & vision insurance.

Question for the pet people...how do you feel about a new pet at this time of your life?

CrocusCat@reddit

That’s where we are. We’ve got our sweet senior cat right now, and when he passes we may not get another. I had to rehome my parents’ cats after mom developed dementia, and that was so miserable. Not going to do that to my kids.

Do you still talk to your parents?

Posted by Swiftiefromhell@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1692 comments

CrocusCat@reddit

Yes. Mom has advanced dementia, but I spend a couple hours at her memory care most weeks. Dad is in assisted living in the same community, and I visit with him as well. I love them both very much but I am also tired of managing their healthcare and finances. It’s a lot.

Any Gen X'ers retired or thinking about it?

Heads up on the tablets - they are GREAT if you can keep down all the required water. But if you don’t hydrate enough, they can damage your kidneys. If you have a fussy stomach like me (30 years of annual colonoscopies) liquid prep is gross but safer.

Time to get rid of the kidney stone.

Head to the women’s health section and pick up the Azo for Urinary Pain. Phenazopyridine will stop the pain during urination. It will also turn your pee bright orange and stain everything, but worth it.

How are we preparing for the ‘next stage’ so we don’t become a burden?

For those of us with adult children, we have to decide now if we trust them. So when they come to us to ask for the car keys, or sign a DPOA, or let them handle finances, the answer is yes. Because kids we love and trust won’t ask for those things unless they’ve been worrying about issues for a long time.

No Coke, Pepsi.

Have your young adult children successfully launched?

We were just talking about this. The shutdown & fallout really derailed my teen kids in ways they still haven’t recovered from. (Not saying the shutdown didn’t need to happen, but there were lasting consequences. )

Old people comfort stuff list? I could use some help.

CCRC is an option like that. Continuing Care Retirement Communities. VERY expensive, and shop carefully, but it's been a godsend for my parents. In independent living, security checks on residents once every 24 hours.

Do you want your kids to take care of you, if someday, you need daily caretaking?

Posted by Euphoric_Garbage1952@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 462 comments

CrocusCat@reddit

The thing I hope I ask my kids is not "how can I stay independent" but "how can I make this easier on you?" Sooner or later, mental capacity declines with age, and I want to be willing to make the changes that give my kids peace of mind. I'm grateful to have good, smart kids I can trust. I hope I never forget that!

Question for older Gen X (55+) Was the term “Bro” and “Yo” common in the 80s?
