Why don't Balkan men know how to dress?

Posted by InExtremis-@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 267 comments

CamelAmbitious7425@reddit

I don't have a problem with people who dress well, I have a problem with people who define themselves by their clothes and look down on others who don't care about fashion. Look at how Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk dress in their private lives, do they look well-dressed to you? I have a friend who works as a credit analyst at a bank, and he told me that he can tell just by looking at someone's appearance or clothing whether they have money or not. The men walking around head-to-toe in designer clothes and wearing expensive cologne are often neck-deep in debt. The wealthiest client he ever dealt with showed up to his appointment in flip-flops and a wrinkled T-shirt.

Your grandfather was probably a poor peasant, and dressed well to hide his poverty. It’s just like many young men today who drive expensive cars while being in debt and living in their mom's basement. Wealthy men of status or truly self-confident men don't feel the need to prove themselves through 'fancy' clothes, and above all, they don't look down on others based on what they wear. Only poor people filled with complexes and insecurities do that.

Who cares what "Fashionable People" think, in my experience, people who look down on how other people are dressed are full of complexes and insecurities. As an adult, how can one even care about what complete strangers are wearing? Besides shorts and a T-shirt, what else is a man supposed to wear in the summer? Do I have to wear a fancy, expensive suit just so people don't label me as a unfashionable redneck or what?

Do Gvardiol, Rimac, and Baturina really look exotic by Croatian standards? In my opinion, Rimac and Baturina don’t look Arab or exotic at all, they could even pass for locals in Germany. Gvardiol is a bit more exotic and wouldnt pass in Germany as a local, but I thought he looked quite normal for Croatian standards, especially for Dalmatia or Herzegovina.

Yes they are descendants from merchants from Dubrovnik, but living for centuries in Kosovo surrounded by Serbs and Albanians they intermingled with them and took the local cultures. Today Janjevci are both genetically and culturally quite different to the rest of Croats.

To me, the men in this video don't look like Janjevci but like regular Croats. My mother comes from a small town in Slavonia where Janjevci were settled in the 90s, so I am very familiar with their appearance. Most of them were short and dark-haired, looking more like a mixture of Albanians and southern Serbs, these Guys dont look Like that.

What makes someone Balkan? From my experience Northern Croatia is quite different from the rest of the country, let alone from Bosnia, Bulgaria or Albania. I guess most Croats who claim they are not Balkan are from there.

CamelAmbitious7425@reddit

Of course, the differences between Croatian and Serbian women are not as huge as those between Swedes and Turks, after all, they are neighboring countries. But saying that there are absolutely no differences is simply not true. Both in the way women dress and in how they look, meaning genetics, there are small but distinct differences, just as there are also small differences between Serbs and Bulgarians.

CamelAmbitious7425@reddit

That is strange. On average, Serbian women dress significantly more revealingly. You are much more likely to see heavily made-up women in high heels, miniskirts, or with silicone lips in Belgrade than in Zagreb. Croatian women tend to dress more moderately or elegantly, very rarely revealingly, and especially not with as many cosmetic procedures as in Belgrade.

CamelAmbitious7425@reddit

A lot of what you are saying is simply not true. Venetians destroyed entire cities and drove them to ruin before conquering them. Zadar, for example, was one of the wealthiest and most magnificent cities in the Mediterranean before it was annexed by the Venetians. It is therefore incorrect to say that the Venetians improved the local infrastructure, not to mention the fact that they cleared entire forests in Dalmatia and exhausted other resources. To say that the islands where the Venetians left the most traces are frequently visited today is also laughable, because there is hardly an island or coastal town in Dalmatia where the Venetians did not leave their mark. Furthermore, nobody knows how many tourists there would be today if cities like Zadar had never been destroyed by the Venetians. What do you mean when you say that mixed marriages were forbidden? The Dalmatian cities such as Zadar, Ragusa (Dubrovnik), and Split were majority Slavic-speaking by the 12th century at the latest, while trade was already being conducted and intermingling began immediately after the arrival of the Slavs and most islands and small villages had been firmly in Slavic hands since the 7th century. Dubrovnik, for example, had its economic, political, and cultural golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries, a time when it had already long been Slavic. There may not have been many Dalmatians, but they certainly left a strong genetic as well as cultural trace in modern Croats. The fact is that Venice was merely a colonizer that brought more harm than good to Dalmatia and its population.

CamelAmbitious7425@reddit

The Venetians were nothing more than colonizers. You don’t seriously think that Croats would have lived in straw and wooden huts if Venice hadn’t existed, do you? And no, Dubrovnik was neither founded by the Venetians nor built by them as we know it today. Venice was a rival of Dubrovnik, and the ancient Ragusans were not Italians, but Romanized Paleo-Balkans who mixed with Slavic immigrants, they represent the ancestors of today's Croats.

Dubrovnik wasnt build by the Venetians. Most other Towns and cities in Dalmatia were also built by local master builders in the Dalmatian style rather than by Venetians, even though the territory was ruled by Venice and there was a certain Venetian influence.

I would still say that Serbs are more similiar to Bulgarians even Eastern Bulgarians than to Slovenians and most of Croats. Both Serbia and Bulgaria are core Balkan Countries, both are orthodox with muslim minority, both were part of the Byzantine and later Ottoman Empire for centuries etc.

Slovakia is quite similiar to northern parts of Croatia especially Slavonia. Croats and Slovaks lived together in the same empire for centuries. Both countries are Slavic and Catholic. Many Slovaks were settled in Slavonia after its reconquest, and many Croats migrated to Slovakia while fleeing from the Ottomans. Genetically, Croats and Slovaks are also quite similar, especially Northern Croats. Slovakian Towns and cities Look almost exactly like the Towns and cities in Northern Croatia. Croats are definitely more similiar to Slovaks than to North Macedonians or Albanians.

Albania and Serbia were ruled by the Ottomans for centuries, and that has influenced their culture and mentality. Both Serbia and Albania share the typical Balkan lifestyle. Strong family structures, high levels of hospitality, and so on, whereas Croatians are more distant and more Western-oriented. Many national dishes from the Ottoman era are also shared between Serbs and Albanians, while in Croatia, typical Balkan dishes like burek, cevapi, and sarma are perceived as foreign. The music in Albania and Serbia often has an oriental influence, which is virtually non-existent in Croatia. Religiously, Albania and Serbia are also similar, both countries are culturally dominated by Orthodox and Muslim influences, whereas Croatia is strictly Catholic and significantly more religious than Serbia and Albania. Architecturally, Serbia and Albania are also alike alongside modern architecture, Ottoman old towns and socialist brutalism dominate, while Croatian cities are shaped by Baroque and Renaissance styles. I know Serbs and Albanians cannot stand each other politically, but culturally and in terms of lifestyle, they are more similar than one might think.
