A Russian immigrant living in Greece explains he believes the Greek lifestyle is superior to the rest of the world. What are your thoughts on his perspective, and does this 'Greek' way of living extend to other Balkan nations?

I moved to Greece 18 years ago. Used to earn minimum €5k per month and LOVED it. Something happened and I earn not even €2k and now I hate living in Greece. Money doesn’t make you happy, but it makes life a LOT fuckin easier.

An outsider’s romanticization. Then one wrong turn or move, and it becomes an outsider’s disillusionment. Neither is a healthy, realistic way of looking at things. Live and let live. Do not compare, do not categorize.
VorsprungDurchTechno@reddit
Exactly, it's tourist porn. This kind of a slow lifestyle means that everything takes ages including things that are vital to your day to day life. Basically you can't really rely on anything.
Personally, this kind of a lifestyle to me symbolizes slow death and is very very boring.
Source - grew up in a Balkan country that has a similar lifestyle..
floare_salbatica@reddit
I wouldn't mind that if wages were on par with the Western ones.
Emirovskii@reddit
But the wages are not on par due to the slow laziness
floare_salbatica@reddit
I doubt that's the main reason. 😅
VorsprungDurchTechno@reddit
The slower lifestyle permeates everything, I would say it's very relevant to why the wages are lower.
floare_salbatica@reddit
Dunno, I lived in Germany for many years and I don't notice such huge differences ( dunno if Greek lifestyle is that different from the Romanian one). In fact, in Germany no one is rushing, the difference is that they make things thoroughly ( and the main reason is that they have the necessary resources, not only their mindset; they don't have to improvise like poorer nations). Fax is still a thing there.:) Let's be serious, it's not speed that makes the difference.
VorsprungDurchTechno@reddit
Why do you think corruption is lower in Germany and much higher in the Balkan countries?
NatureRiver@reddit
I mean she did not mention anything about corruption, but you somehow got that. Question is why do you think corruption is lower in Germany than in the Balkans?
VorsprungDurchTechno@reddit
A multifaceted set of factors is behind corruption, one of which is the lifestyle.
floare_salbatica@reddit
Again, it doesn't have anything to do with the "pace of life".
VorsprungDurchTechno@reddit
Well that's where we disagree. I think it's one of the factors behind what we discussed.

just FYI, i know this dude and he lives in greece with a digital nomad visa, which requires a MINIMUM of 3500€/mo income. so yeah no shit he's enjoying life here
pk851667@reddit
But this is the exact group Greece is trying to attract. They don’t have to do anything to create jobs and they can tax them.
Perelin_Took@reddit
And then the price of housing and services adjust to their standards and normal people cannot afford to live in their areas.
That shit is happening in Portugal and Spain.

how does him being a digital nomad (aka working online for a foreign company) reduces your chance to "FIND A DECENT PAYING JOB IN MY OWN FUCKIG TOWN"? If anything it will increase it if its service, construction or retail type of job?

Monoctis@reddit
Aren’t taxes based on residency and not on citizenship? I think they do pay taxes to Greek government
Ok-Tangerine1917@reddit
yeah if you reside in any EU country for 6+ months in a calendar year, you're obliged to pay taxes there, especially with digital nomad visas. however even with the taxes paid (around 30% i believe) he has 2500€ of disposable income left which is ridiculous for greece
No_Zucchini7810@reddit
That s not disposable, its what is left after taxes he still pays for rent, food, utilities , transport with that money .. i am assuming.
LilDonky@reddit
and in greece that's a fuckton of money
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
It's not so clear. You can make an extensive research if you really care to want. But, it depends on the country. Someone that comes in a country will not have the citizenship of a country. It would make sense to NOT pay tax based on that country. Especially since your job will not be in that country. Now, if you come to live in a country, while not having citizenship, and you work locally in the country, it would make sense if you paid tax there.
The point is, anything can be happening. We are not 100% sure he pays taxes in Greece, and neither that he does not pay there.
In any case, fuck this country, and the whole planet in extension. I know it has nothing to do with our talk, I just need to vent.
scanfash@reddit
Doesn’t matter, tax law is generally that you pay income in your country of residence not in your country of work, hence why relatively many people from Malmö (Sweden) commute to Copenhagen to work due to Swedish lower taxes and higher Danish salaries, and the same in German/Danish border region. Same logic behind having offshore companies in tax havens.
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
What can I say. That's what I read online. That it depends on the country. If you are sure that this is how it works, then I have nothing to say against it.
Minskdhaka@reddit
A quick search will show you that you pay taxes in the country where you live for over six months each year, unless you're American, in which case you also have to pay taxes on your global income above a certain level.
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
Yeah, a "quick" searched showed me what Americans do but without clarification.
Damn quick searches...
Sempra@reddit
But he spends money in Greece to greek businesses which is still something. I’d rather give my money to Greek businesses than the government.
Perfect-Hearing9080@reddit
If peoples like him flux there local business adjust there prices , and the locals who are often poorer will be outpriced
Far_Country_1629@reddit
True, but the store owners who are also Greek do benefit dont they ? and they are part of the economy too.
Perfect-Hearing9080@reddit
Short term maybe , but everything around them will go to shit , and other services will raise their price too , so they essentially have to raise their price just to stay afloat
Far_Country_1629@reddit
But some Greeks were telling me last after i posted something here about the Greek debt, that the economy was going great.
Something tell me they might have been government supporters.
Perfect-Hearing9080@reddit
Just because a country going down doesn't mean it's not good for a select few .
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
Yeah, he does. Tho, he probably does not spend a lot on LOCAL business, which is what matters. I doubt he'll pay more for the same products, instead of getting them from online shops and big markets. Not even local people do that, so why would a stranger do it?
kallefranson@reddit
Nope, the only countries with citizenship based taxes are the US, Hungary, Eritrea and Myanmar. If he has a digital nomad visa, it means he has residency in Greece and has to pay income taxes like any other Greek as well.
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
I see. Thank you for the information! This makes sense and it's proper. US been garbage once again.
pk851667@reddit
If you’re a digital nomad visa (and not EU national residing in Greece), and you live in Greek 6months +1 day in any tax year, you must pay Greek taxes. It’s a much more gray area for EU nationals.
I find this a false economy, as it only attracts high earners willing to drive up rents and prices in the areas they go to, all for what amounts to a pittance in taxes, if they even pay it.
This is exceedingly common in Berlin, Budapest, and other Central European cities. And frankly, they assume if they make Athens into an international zone, the gentrification will just clean it up on its own. Which is bullshit because it’ll only be people who are not invested in the place they live for the long term.
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
What I understand is that we are victims of the rich and powerful. But then again, poor people serve them. Who services them in the hotels and airports? What police protects them
At some point, it will be the best if everyone takes responsibility of their actions. Including me. Myself, more than anyone if anything.
EastConsideration672@reddit
its good for the economy to have a middle class population that can spend foreign money on the market
scanfash@reddit
Foreign investment can be good, this instance is generally not good if the income level far surpasses local standards as it out prices local even if it generates some tax revenue
EastConsideration672@reddit
exactly it can increase consumer spending without interfering with the performance of the economy with unfriendly business policies
scanfash@reddit
That’s foreign investment I am talking about being a potential benefit, generally full time living with foreign salary is only a very short term injection not a long term benefit
EastConsideration672@reddit
not if the foreigners keep coming to greece and get incomes from abroad
scanfash@reddit
It does since the foreigners do not generate productivity with their work directly for the local economy, only spend and that generally at far higher rates than locals since they usually choose cheaper countries so as I said it’s a short term injection but long term it will do more harm than good.
EastConsideration672@reddit
but greece is a service driven economy which needs the consumer spending so the greeks can be the major workforce and the foreigners can be those who inject the economy with the needed capital
scanfash@reddit
Which is in itself a unsustainable model hence why further adding plasters to it is not sustainable. Apart from that they do not inject the economy with significant enough capital to sustain it
EastConsideration672@reddit
greece is not an industrial country this is the only way it can get more money circulating in the economy from abroad and our pm also wants to increase the price of the golden visa as a result brining more affluent digital nomads or people who want to retire in greece which will be done by giving them more incentives then before
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
That's laziness. Greece used to have more factories and agriculture and the country went lazy af, destroying the economy further. The more this culture continues to live, the worse it will get.
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
How will this happen? You cannot (and shouldn't) stop them from working outside of Greece. In fact, that's the reason they come here. They know working in Greece sucks.
EastConsideration672@reddit
by giving the incentives
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
That's another very important thing, correct. It's the reason a lot of houses have turned into airbnb and why some taverns (among other things) have started increasing prices. They don't care if locals can afford it, tourists, digital nomads will! The local population can just die, lol

Alternative_Job6187@reddit
That’s totally wrong.
We have businesses registered in the countries where we have residence permits, and those businesses pay taxes there. You may have missed the fact that “Mother Russia” doesn’t leave us in peace and keeps asking for money to fund its war, but that doesn’t change the fact that we are taxpayers in the Balkans. Not to mention that the money we don’t pay directly as taxes we spend in local markets or keep in local banks.
As for what the guy said - yes, I can confirm: the Balkans taught us to live now instead of postponing life until "when I’m rich enough". It is pretty common opinion among us.

I have been seeing his content a lot on insta as well and while he does a good job at promoting the culture and everything else, the guy has no clue what is, average Greeks go through in our daily lives. We barely survive
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
Minskdhaka@reddit
Relatable. I'm not Turkish but used to live in Turkey, and once spent my savings there on a Nintendo Switch (for my son, though).
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
Not that it's not a bad move in your case too but at least I can give you a small excuse of caring for your kid. That guy got it for himself (and generally overconsoomed crap for himself).
sakurakuran93@reddit
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
sakurakuran93@reddit
ConsoleMaster0@reddit
Όχι, όχι.

You can’t write ”we barely survive” on a Reddit thread with your iPhone connected to high-speed internet, while people are actually dying from starvation, poverty, disease in developing countries. You’re fine bro. Just move or get rid of some stuff.
FirstIdChoiceWasPaul@reddit
Blind people don’t miss colours.
A guy who lives in a country where streetshitters are uncommon, where there’s food, ready access to quality education, information, a country who was been at the forefront of civilisation in a time when most other places on this planet still used leaves to wipe their asses?
That guy has (by all rights) different expectations from life. Not starving in a Western country doesn’t mean you’re doing ok. Not starving and having where to sleep is the very definition of “barely surviving”, my guy.
Sempra@reddit
I don’t get your point here. Are you saying because Ancient Greece was more developed than other states, 2000 years ago, he has the right to expect more?
FirstIdChoiceWasPaul@reddit
In all seriousness, wtf is wrong with you. 😂😂😂
A Western country and some nameless backwater breed different sorts of people, with clearly different expectations from life. What I imagine might classify as decent conditions in Haiti would be plain monstrous in Estonia.
You’re technically correct, but kinda like politicos usually are, disconnected from real life. You can’t reasonably claim “you’re whining, others have it way worse”, because those someones live in hellish conditions, not in the European Union. Going by that logic, everything’s acceptable, because jews managed to survive the Holocaust - so you can’t possibly say living on 500 euros in a city where the rent’s 600 is not “barely getting by”. I mean, jews ate every other week, right? Top that!
Now, do we have it better than South America? Or Africa? The US? China? Sure. But we have it much, much worse than __we, here, now__ should. And we have only ourselves to blame for that, but that’s another story for another day.
Fact of the matter is the majority of people in around half the countries in the European Union are barely getting by. Living on five hundred euros a month or less. And the ones who have it better are not far off.
Check out how much rents are in the poorer European countries. Check out the minimum wages. Check out how much food sets you back. And tell me how a cashier’s supposed to pay rent and eat in Tirana.
Sempra@reddit
i’m not reading all that bro, sorry. to summarize, poor people have it tough, anywhere in the world - i guess that community is just more vocal due to social media and digitalization.
sakurakuran93@reddit
He doesn’t mean it just because of Ancient Greece. Greece was doing more than alright up until 2004. And a lot of us were old enough to remember the quality of life and money etc that we had back then. We expect something better and different because we had it. And a lot of people in Greece had it real good.

I do understand that. However, we are not talking about a developing country but about a country in the EU that supposedly, according to our government, is doing amazing financially and everything is working like a clockwork. I think that Balkans are a living proof that material things are only one part of being happy.
The western society found it easier to materialize happiness through numbers, hence they are unhappy even though they checked all the right boxes.
What we need is a sense of purpose and a goal to achieve something bigger than us...W e already know how to live, just need something to live for, to make sure our kids are safe, educated and happy. The problem is, our leaders just want that one more Yacht...
og_toe@reddit
as a person who grew up in balkan and now living in western europe i completely agree with you. not saying life is easy in the balkans at all but you can genuinely live in ways you cannot in other countries. you just need less overall.
when i worked in greece i had half the salary as when i worked in the west but i had double the fulfillment. even if i had very little in comparison, my lifestyle was way nicer than it is here. experiencing this difference has really impacted my priorities in life and the way i view personal finance and the notion of ”quality of life”. the most quality i’ve gotten out of life was genuinely when i had the least.
OriginalMexican@reddit
You all say that, and then we all meet in the West.
"Oh its so horible over there in the west" says the Balkan man that spent his working years in the West making 3x the salary he made back home...
og_toe@reddit
i didn’t say it’s horrible, it was my honest experience. i did not move out of my own will, i am currently not able to move back due to life situation but its something i’m actively thinking about. i have a close friend who is considering the same thing. i miss the balkans every single day.
and that’s the unfortunate thing about the fate of many balkan people, many of us end up moving for various reasons and then realize that something is missing, something is not right.
a high salary doesn’t make me happy when my environment is choking me. just like i said in my previous comment. the west isn’t bad in and of itself, but in my own personal opinion it lacks any sort of warmth, socially and culturally. life feels very.. flat, individualistic, alienated, square.
again as i said in my previous comment, happiness wise making 900€ living with a roommate in southern greece was actually higher than my current life in scandinavia. because salary can’t compensate for family, culture, true friends, connectedness, spontaneity, climate, attitude, nightlife etc etc
OriginalMexican@reddit
I understand your logic very well, I too experience nostalgia (beautifull word by the way) - I just fear its mind playing tricks and not a true assesment of the state.
Feeling you feel is actually common with all imigrants everywhere around the world, I dont think its unique to Balkan.
Its a sad destiny as you end up stuck beetween the worlds.... You miss the world you left, your friends, family, country... which is normal - but often if you do go back you realize that that moment has passed and those people, places, way of life has been altered (as well as that you have romanticized things and forgoten about the negative aspects).
Canada made a sitcom about Koean imigrants and their adjustments to the Canadian culture/customs (Kim's convenience). It tells a story about Korean dad talking about Korea and their culture with more conservative stance and kids telling him he is out of touch. It was a great sucess in Canada. Funny enough when it aired in Korea it was a flop as most Koreans said its out of touch. -Turns out Korea has changed over the last few decaes and they do not think/act/see things the way that Korean imigrants do.
Same happens in all imigrant communities, they are stuck in time and place thinking of their country as it was - but as Heraclitus said "No man ever steps in the same river twice".
I miss few places where I lived (Greece included) but when I go back it often comes to me that what i miss may be what I had, and not the place (freedom, youth, relationships, lack of responsibility, moment in time really). I doubt that I could have it again if I went back.
BadBasik@reddit
Don't get me wrong, it's great to have nice things, but at what cost? If you can have them without sacrificing happiness, love, family, free time, then they are just a cherry on the top, a decoration to an already great desert. But putting a cherry on a turd doesn't make it any more appetizing, it just ruins the cherry as well.
og_toe@reddit
yeah that is basically how i feel about where i live now. is it an objectively ”better” country than my home country? yes. do i feel truly happy here? nope

spaceninj@reddit
He's absolutely right. People here are saying "it's not that easy. We work hard. We struggle." That's not the point he's making. The one thing about Greeks is even though they work hard and do have struggles like anyone else, they still find time to socialize, to spend time with family, or to go to their islands/villages. The constant capitalistic need for "growth" and "more" aren't the main goals. There is a feeling of "enough" when you get to a certain point.
I agree with his sentiment, even if he isn't the best messenger.
No-Hamster-9060@reddit
As someone who lives in an island this is very wrong here, there's always a need for more and to show off for the rich crowd and distinguish themselves. You just notice it more here because people are rich and thus money hungry. Even as a local when you go to the grocery store they will try to overcharge you constantly and they overprice scams because they can. At least this is all in my experience, you can't not call it money hungry when someone reinvents their basement into a small apartment and for it to charge 800€ a month

I hate him, I've seen his channel its all just this, showing off his wealth by living in Greece and saying blah blah blah friendly greeks blah blah blah, this guy also lives only in Athens, he never visited any other place besides the very expensive islands, he is just showing off. Btw what greek lifestyle? Eating traditional VERY expensive food from fancy restaurants, living in an expensive home in Athens and traveling to the islands is the Greek lifestyle to him? Here is the actual Greek lifestyle, work to be paid less, buy cheap ingredients to cool basic stuff, get out for a coffee to relax because there's more work waiting for you, later clean house, wash dishes, clean the clothes and after you're done then sleep, wake up again cook food, sit and watch tv and then sleep again for work tomorrow, in circumstances like important events you'll get the chance to visit your mom and dad you'll eat together and stay for a day or two with them, in the summer you'll go to swim in the sea in the free parts of the beach because you can't afford to sit in other places. Btw our traditional junk food got also very expensive so only tourists will be able to afford to eat souvlaki while the average greek because it's wasteful to spend 4-5€ for one gyro, so the better alternative is making it yourself.
No-Hamster-9060@reddit
The souvlaki places are for the foreigners while the Greeks eat instant noodles and pasta without the meat ATP

it is easy though, you only need like $2000 a month to live a normal life.
Saying it's easy and how you need $2000 (Actually euros the way inflation is in trajectory) In the same breath is crazy because almost no one makes that much😂 Even police officers make less than your normal life standard loll

Don't you have a brain ? Are you aware how much it costs to move ? Or do you think people just give you new housing and living documents for free same day you arrive? So much yapping about making 10k and yet you know so little about money. Moronic
Prestigious-Shine240@reddit
Like €100 for a train ticket and €500 to rent a room or something? Yeah that's tough
Outrageous_Deal_5620@reddit
First of all assuming that's the average price, yes that is still tough for someone who is poor. Do you not understand how money works? you're so spoiled you don't even hear yourself.
And second of all, nobody just gives you a room. you need a deposit. you need rent upfront. You need to arrange documents to live in said country. You need money to live before you even start working. You need far more than 600 euros.
I thought you're an expert, don't you know all these things? The only way someone would say something as asinine as what you just did is they're either rich, they have never worked and travelled in their life, or they're fully trolling.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
what concerned me more was how he said its easy, you just need 2k when we are talking about staying here then in the same breath said we can get a work in Germany or something. YES NO SHIT we need German salaries to live in Greece
casual_philosopher02@reddit
we do? what's the point of saying that when we are talking about residents of Greece though? Then we would live in Germany not Greece or Bulgaria
Outrageous_Deal_5620@reddit
and how much is the minimum wage in the us? and how much is the cost of living? because it has been proven numerous times that the USA disposable income is marginally higher than Europe. a quick Google search and here is the top result https://boundlesshq.com/blog/us-vs-europe-employment-costs-salaries-net-pay-compared-2025-study/
in what world did you think that you, an American with an amarecian salary and American worldview, could come up here and tell native people how it's easy to live, without being told you're a fucking entitled imbecile? because that is peak American arrogance. literally no one asked or cares about your misinformed opinion
Prestigious-Shine240@reddit
Actually I come from a poorer country than even Bulgaria, but I worked hard and sacrificed many things for years to be able to move and make a good income. Americans on minimum wage are saying the exact same things as you do btw. They make $2000, but the rent is $1500 for a studio. Even on $5k a month you're barely surviving. You need $10k+ to live a normal life
Outrageous_Deal_5620@reddit
imagine saying America is poorer than bulgaria. I can only laugh. this is the stupidest thing I've read in a long time, congratulations. and completely ignoring the fact that it's already been explained Americans have higher disposable income than Europeans.
and I love how you just whipping out these statistics out your ass "Americans are saying this" oh well you got me there, if the Americans are saying it it must be true
Prestigious-Shine240@reddit
I didn't say America is poorer than Bulgaria. I said I was born in a country that's poorer than Bulgaria lol
Outrageous_Deal_5620@reddit
considering you've only been yapping about America it's a fair assumption that's what you're talking about. and if you're neither from America or Bulgaria why are you here talking about both?you realise nothing you are saying is tangible, right?
Prestigious-Shine240@reddit
Why, I'm living in the Balkans with an American online business. You can literally do the same thing, just takes a few years of work

Depends.
For example one female relative my age, doesn't work. Doesn't want to work. Refuses to work the farms they own. Married, but no children. They know their inheritance will cover them. It is all about living in the moment.
Others work for the state and have people clock their time cards for them while they stay home.
Equally others are working their arses off in private industry. Such as hospitality or hospitals. Then working old farms in their holidays.

As a Greek leaving in Greece, this is bullshit. I am 48 years old with 2 kids and I work 45+ hours per week as an engineer. Most people in my circle the same. That lifestyle fits perhaps to some pensioners and some lazy folks, but not the average Greek.
LastHomeros@reddit
If you are from the Balkans, Anatolia, Caucasus, Southern Italy, Iberia, or Levant, there is nothing about Greek lifestyle that is particularly special or superior.

I need this in my life. Where would I be without superficial shit Chatgpt Tiktok posts on Reddit?
The irony is that this type of content is the opposite of what this stereotypical 'greek life' is supposed to be about: live a simple humble life surrounded by friends, family, sea, mountains, olive oil and feta cheese, without spending our days doomscrolling bs content on the internet, like our yia yia and papou's used to do.

oops_all_memes@reddit
Large IT companies in Russia mostly stopped allowing working from outside of Russia. The ones that still allow it are not affiliated with the state. Many IT companies just uprooted and left Russia altogether

Most important lessons you should have taken from the greeks as a russian is that:
- life is easier if you do not invade other countries and kill thousands of people just to consolidate power by inventing external enemies to pivot away from own misery and corruption
- opressive autocratic regimes do no good and such rule always result in the largest nation with the most resources being poor and its people miserable
- opposition should not be thrown in jail and tortured to death
- fried zucchini and tzatziki is better than borscht and pelmeni
Once you realize all that the future will be brighter for your people.

Greece is a paradise on earth but for only July and August where the peak tourism season is and everybody in Europe is on vacation so you meet interesting people from all over the world. All the rich and powerful people come to Greece during the peak holiday season. Then you have 4 more months that is relative ok and 6 winter months that can be problematic to say the least. There is no perfect place. Also Greece has some very nice areas and some others not so developed. So it depends where you spend your time.

I live in Portugal. There are many foreigners thats come here on salaries from northern europe or the us and have this take.
The reality: portuguese people work more hours than most of the european union. they dont live life slow or whatever. Its you that went there loaded with cash that are living life slow. It may be true that in portugal people arent so obsessed with status as in the US but many (especially younger) portuguese live pretty hard lives because of a huge housing crisis partially caused by americans that come here to watch us "enjoying our lives slowly". So please be respectful when having this take. People are here working their asses of having two jobs just to afford rent and you going look how they enjoy their lives because you went to a bar and there were people there, while earning 5x the average income of the country isnt a great look.

Well it's true that you shouldn't get a fucking heart attack by overworking yourself. But, no matter where you go in Europe now, being working class sucks. You cannot survive on 40h only cause rent and feeding yourself takes 70-80% of your net salary, while the rest is spent on kids or other needs. So most people work extra hours, some even do 60-70h work weeks for many months. I'm in that group for example, that's the only way I can earn enough to afford simple pleasures like travelling or taking my kid to the sea. But I feel that my health has deteriorated after 2 years of that tempo and bad sleep. It cannot be maintained long term, so I will chill during the hot months, like my Greek ancestors. 😁🇬🇷❤️🇷🇸

It is useless and waste of time.
I did work hard and saved money for years again, but this time for a house. That is a necessity. But I can live with an older car without any problems.
