Why don't Balkan men know how to dress?

Found this pic on Twitter claiming European people don't know how to dress.
jaunmilijej@reddit
In Turkey there has been a sharp increase in pressure on men to dress and look properly recently.
Also Greek men also do know how to dress. Funny things is, in Athens men dress better and in Thessaloniki women dress better. That’s what I have observed.
Belgraviana@reddit
Seconding this. My first time in Athens I was amazed how sharp the men were dressed. Especially wearing jackets in the summer. And tons of men’s clothing stores too. I still wish I had the spare cash at the time for one of the suits I saw there…
freddo_expresso@reddit
Greek men dress better compared to other Balkan countries, maybe because homophobia is not as strong here. So they don't to experiment more and take care of their looks and especially their physique.
Not as good as Italians though.
kamarjera@reddit
Greek men are not afraid to accessorize, too. I love manly bracelets 👌🏻

They look fine imo opinion as a woman
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
Honestly whats wrong with the way these guys are dressed? The Outfits look normal to me
Cabbage-Patch@reddit
I don't think there's anything wrong with it, it's just considered a basic look. You wouldn't refer to a person like this as fashionable. The whole drunk driving part is weird though. Doesn't really relate to this observation.
Unfunnycommenter_@reddit
I mean if you're just going on a drink with your buddies what else are you supposed to wear when it's 40 degrees outside. It's like autumn/winter where you can wear cool layered outfits
Portughezul@reddit
Linen shirt and pant
RealFatPenguin@reddit
White shirt, bow tie and tuxedo, what else.
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
I mean the title says Balkan men dont know how to dress and than shows this Picture of 4 completly normal dressed Guys, at least in my eyes.
Cabbage-Patch@reddit
Fashionable people often refer to unfashionable people this way. They have a higher standard, so to them a basic look is considered a failure.
There's entire theories and principals to proper fashion that are not being followed here. That's where the "don't know" part comes from.
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
Who cares what "Fashionable People" think, in my experience, people who look down on how other people are dressed are full of complexes and insecurities. As an adult, how can one even care about what complete strangers are wearing? Besides shorts and a T-shirt, what else is a man supposed to wear in the summer? Do I have to wear a fancy, expensive suit just so people don't label me as a unfashionable redneck or what?
Sharp-Membership-633@reddit
You seem to care, and my grandpa who lived his whole life in a village was dressed better as those people.
You can look old photos and men were usually also very fashionable, or let’s say that they cared more about how they wer perceived.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
it is the male equivalent of jean shorts and a crop top, they just are dressed casually and for the heat.... I don't see the issue too
dedreanu2@reddit
Absolutely nothing wrong, people who hate on these outfits are just weird.
Sharp-Membership-633@reddit
It’s not very classy
Right_Map8151@reddit
Couse its true especially here. If you wear something out of the ordinary or have different hairstyle then the norm people will think that your gay.
44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E@reddit
Even mother would be like "that's gay" 🫵🏻
EverIce_UA@reddit
But if you go too manly, she'll say you look like a terrorist. Yes I didn't trim my beard a couple day more than usually
thepurplethorn@reddit
and she’d be right because your guy’s idea of manly is a track suit 🤣
EverIce_UA@reddit
No, she calls me a Talib only with a bit longer hair and beard, even if I'm in a 3-piece suit, lol. It's another universal thing over there
44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E@reddit
Da, da, da there is no in between and just right except the day of the trimming
OnTheLambDude@reddit
So what are the guys in the photo above?
If you go to West Hollywood looking like that you LITERALLY won’t make it out with a full ballsack.
eminemforehead@reddit
rightly so
ddaattuullaa@reddit
Aeres_Fi@reddit
What if you dress and act like this?
Technical-Actuator12@reddit
wetdreamsjess@reddit
It is not about fashion, it is a regional uniform that tells you exactly who will spend four hours over one coffee while yelling about football.
Separate_Business880@reddit
They have the same style they had in highschool when their mom used to leave clean clothes for them.
And taking care of yourself is considered gay if you're a Balkan male. Only hitting the gym is kinda socially approved.
Substantial_Raise914@reddit
Nice style = gay. Which is something balkan men are terrified to be seen as. Extremely insecure men syndrome sadly. :D
SerbianHustle@reddit
True, I had a friend who literally said he would love to be able to wear loafers and likes the look of monkstrap shoes, but he was afraid to wear because someone may think it's gay.
I told him, only thing that is really gay is to fuck dudes or get fucked by them. No choice of footwear is gay.
Frank_cat@reddit
But why???
drunkguyfrommunich@reddit
Ok, but wearing at least a oxford or linen shirt (long sleeve, not short!), a normal chino pant and some leather shoes or decent sneakers is tolerated even in the Balkan macho community.
There is always the one guy wearing a shirt and dresspants.
ProductOfSight@reddit
Im the guy who permanently in a dress shirt, dress pants and dress shoes or boots and yea its very tolerated atleast in zagreb
geniuslogitech@reddit
chino pants are peak gay, dress pants are fine
Substantial_Raise914@reddit
Only for going out to get girls at night. Otherwise gay.
originalno_ime@reddit
" Extremely insecure men syndrome sadly. :D " obvious projection
Aeres_Fi@reddit
Are the outfits in the op pic supposed to portray what those who might be perceived "gay" dress as? (I don't get it)
Substantial_Raise914@reddit
No no. The guys in the pic are not gay. They all wear basically the same clothes and have shaven/short hair. That sort of hair is manly, because you give out vibes that you don't care about hairstyle as those gays and women do.
Aeres_Fi@reddit
I see. I thought he was calling them gay because of the jean shorts. I always thought jean shorts were perceived as "effeminate" by most men.
eminemforehead@reddit
nah real men have their hairy legs and at least one of their balls out
geniuslogitech@reddit
jean shorts are fine, chino shorts are gay in Balkans
jean shorts + your clubs football jersey is staple fit in Balkans
Nit0ni@reddit
Idk who told you that, a lot of people here wear chino shorts
Substantial_Raise914@reddit
No. I suppose some ancestor of balkan men decided this was a way to go. Must have been a very manly man. So it goes as "not gay" from generation to generation.
Aeres_Fi@reddit
Wait, if they focus on their look by buzzing hair, isn't that caring for appearance? Also, why not hunt an animal and wear it's skin? Long hair (not caring for haircuts) and hunting trophies is peak male behavior.
MoneyLaunderX@reddit
Nice style = subjective.
DaleCooper322@reddit
Extremely wrong. Personally idc about fashion and generally here people are not that individualistic and don't like to visually stand out. That being said, often people here wear expensive and 'high end' clothes that's in basic colors and simple design. I've never heard people not wanting to wear something because it's gay except for some girly colors (pink pants or similar).
MartinBP@reddit
How is it wrong? This mentality can be observed absolutely everywhere. Anything diverging from the norm is instantly called "gay". Even not having a buzzcut would get you labelled as gay in rural areas.
amerikani@reddit
So if they don’t follow along with the crowd they are insecure? I feel like the insecurity is on the followers not on these gentlemen who simply don’t a fuck
MartinBP@reddit
That's literally the opposite of what they wrote.
SunnyTheMasterSwitch@reddit
Assumption as stupid as an American would make.
holyrs90@reddit
BCS ITS FUCKING HOT, that is so comfortable to wear for casual beer night, or if ur on some beach town. Wich what u wear doesnt matter too much.
Vigmod@reddit
What's wrong with that? It's warm outside this time of year. What, should they be wearing a three-piece suit?
MyGayGossip@reddit
Measured against Chinese fashion sensibilities, the way many Balkan men dress would read as distinctly teenage — in China, hoodies and sportswear are largely the territory of the under-35 crowd. That said, I have no complaints. The sporty look suits Balkan men well, and their generally athletic builds carry it convincingly. It's a style many gay men find quietly irresistible.
lhookhaa@reddit
What do you mean I don't know how to dress? I have a very nice Tommy Hilfiger training suit! Not Adidas like everyone else, Tommy! I wear it for all the special occasions!
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
Good choice man i also have one Tommy training suit for special occassions and my old Kappa for every day wear.
Yes I paid 2 euro for my haircut, how did you know?
determine96@reddit
xD
I also have Tommy Hilifiger T-shirt and I'm wearing it on a special occasions.
And I'm not joking, (now for a wedding I have costume and the proper official shoes and such), but for the most part I dress exactly as the two people in middle of the picture.
Dizzy_Arachnid4292@reddit
Never in my life have I seen a single man who doesn't look like a tool wearing denim shorts
Vanaquish231@reddit
Thats not uniquely for balkan. Men on general, seem unable of wearing flattering clothes.
Like, i dont expect body shape clothes, but at least wear pants that dont make your half body a fucking pole. A man that has his body parts be distinguishable where they start and where they end, makes him much hotter.
Substantial-One1934@reddit
At least they are wearing socks and sport shoes. In summer our men dress the same, but barefoot and slippers.
RustCohle_23@reddit
Fat + tight shirt is the main concept on the Balkans.
BabaRogata@reddit
Do not ever try to impress this type of people. Double down and buy polo shirt, Air Max shoes and Casio G-Shock.
StellarAoMing@reddit
If you think we don't know how to dress, you're always welcome to come and say it face to face. Even compare styles first hand. You'd lose both ways.
kamarjera@reddit
These guys could also pass for, let’s say tourists from Poland, just as well. It is such a basic look, I see it everywhere among tourists on Greek islands. Except Italians as everybody seems to agree here. They do not like wearing shorts.
LongjumpingBowler244@reddit
They dress almost like Germans 🤣
ReasonResitant@reddit
Yall dont know how good clothes look like, that's the problem.
Aeres_Fi@reddit
Enlighten is. (Serious btw)
geniuslogitech@reddit
Unfunnycommenter_@reddit
Idk if it's just the guy's face but this screams "nepo baby performative male with AI startup company"
The only thing he's missing is a tote bag lmfao
zanesenjak_@reddit
I am also curious.
geniuslogitech@reddit
Unfunnycommenter_@reddit
Good luck wearing this in summer months
CmdrJemison@reddit
That looks like Zadar.
Teachers_Pet_01@reddit
I was gonna say no these men are not local but then I was like wait....they probably are. Ok, the one on the left probably makes ice cream in a local shop.
Odd-Future1037@reddit
Generalizations are dumb. I pay attention to how I dress, and no that doesnt make me gay. And contrary to what people on here say, most people card how you dress even of not directly. How you dress absolutely impacts the way you are perceived by others. So grow up!
thepurplethorn@reddit
I don’t think its the clothes.. I think its the hair 🤣
buteljak@reddit
As a 30yr woman i dont see anything wrong. Ok i understand men's fashion is different with younger generations, but these look like late 20 - 30s guys who are just comfortable wearing these basic fits. I also saw an Instagram reel of a foreigner living in Croatia also being surprised by men wearing jean knee-shorts. They look fine.
Money-University4481@reddit
People are on vacation. Let them relax and not drag the whole wardrobe in a bag just to suit your taste
Xitztlacayotl@reddit
I go to Italy often. I'm so envious of how people dress well there. Both men and women. And nothing fancy, just a daily casual clothes, but they are full of style.
Meanwhile our girls wear shit. And men like this photo.
One day I dressed like a casual Italian and went to a coffee with my friend and his GF. The first thing she said to me was why am I dressed like a peder...
Full-Rice-9287@reddit
Seems like you nailed it, if that was the reaction. 👌
Emhyrr@reddit
Because not everyone is into fashion. I wear the same shit cause I don't care.
Cabbage-Patch@reddit
True, but there's a difference between "not everyone is into fashion" and "no one here is fashionable". I grew up in Germany and moved to eastern Europe for a little over 5 years. The first few years I was often asked if I'm gay because of the way I dressed. This stopped once I started only wearing jeans and t-shirts like everyone else.
When I return to visit some people still ask me if I'm gay because of the way I dress. And, maybe also because I have genuinely fabulous hair.
ThingCandid9553@reddit
At least in Romania, nobody’s going to call you gay for dressing well. If anything, if you dress like crap, you’re way more likely to become the punchline among your friends.
SnooMuffins4587@reddit
I dont have to wear something good everyday. I can just wear my badketball shorts with my flip flops on and call it my fit that day during summer
Sharp-Membership-633@reddit
Men dress not so good or don’t care about it at all in most cases, even for important occasions.
freddo_expresso@reddit
No it's not.
Sharp-Membership-633@reddit
Where do man care more about appearance as women ?
freddo_expresso@reddit
Have you been to Italy?
Sharp-Membership-633@reddit
Many times, and have you seen how the average women is dressed ? La bonbona
but ur right that the average Italian dresses much better as the men’s across the rest of Europe.
_whatever_idc@reddit
It is true for Dalmatia that men forgot the sense of fashion.
Look up old photos of young Miso Kovac, that was peak Dalmatian.
7am51N@reddit
Btw. this is the imaginary gay clothing in some parts of the world, prepare to be stoned.
BOYYA_AYYOB@reddit
I can dress but I think that's only cuz I'm Istrian lmao
valqyrie@reddit
"Don't know how to dress" How to dress for what, look good? Do you truly believe those guys are wearing those and think they look cool? Fuck no. They are wearing what they find comfortable lmfao.
OkoMushrooom@reddit
Heres the solution, dress like you’re a tourist from where fashion is good and they will follow. Find clothes that make you feel not just confident but also de-program you from that mainstream ooga booga nonsense that makes them dress like that, and just wear them. Only the weak minded will crumble under pressure, unfortunately there are more of them than anyone cares to admit.
amazingadaptence@reddit
I think its the result of fear of being seen as a gay mixed with the fact that they have babied by their mothers to the point of not knowing how to properly groom themselves
Satyriasis457@reddit
Jeeez, bickering over a tweet criticising other mens dress code. If you've got half a brain you can see these guys are on holiday. Fashionable dressing probably isnt top of the priority list
baron_spaghetti@reddit
I know some who do.
I know some who don’t.
The latter usually are more careful with their money as they have less.
Betajnov@reddit
Missing polo t-shirts and papuće...
paradajz666@reddit
Who cares how anyone dresses?
Lucifer_893@reddit
The gays
PreWiBa@reddit
It depends.
I'd argue that there are Balkan men that dress nicely, but it has become more of a rural-city divide.
As much as people write about the Balkan krkan coming out of his SUV, most people in Sarajevo that step out of an expensive vehicle are dressed nicely and expensive, "Gospoda".
In general, if you attain status, it is expected to look the part. Physical appearances are not that important, that is true, but no way a doctor or high ranking person is allowed to look like crap, people will literally "and HE is a doctor?", he will get mocked and ridiculed.
But it's very different if you are from small places and villages. This seems to be Dubrovnik. Apart from the city itself, most places around it are very conservative and rural. It's there where you get this look. The more i get outside of big cities towards small towns, the more i see this type of person.
And it's not true you are mocked for being gay, its the contrary, people will treat you much better simply for looking like you have high status.
Aeres_Fi@reddit
I don't get it. Is the pic supposed to be "good" or "bad"?
Substantial_Raise914@reddit
The pic contains "non gay guys".
Aeres_Fi@reddit
😂 man ts stoopid
Whole-O@reddit
First of all, this picture was taken on the most touristy street in Croatia, so it doesn't mean those are locals. In fact, the locals dress even worse than this.
ctorex@reddit
Of course we know, it is the effort that it is required that we are not into it.
driftstyle28@reddit
Because they are scared other men will call them gay, usually because they are closeted themselves and being gay in the Balkans is taboo. That is why they put on a macho persona even if their biggest wish is being kissed by another man.
ShelbyNL@reddit
This is peak fashion... Nobody can get on our level, they can only cope on twitter.
Early-Show2886@reddit
and who said that?
Attention: Most of the questions asked here do not come from Balkan residents; they are mostly from Abglo Saxon or Western European countries who think we Balkan people are beneath us.
CandidDebate6827@reddit
because people will mistake you for GAY. always get a buzz cut, plain t shirt and shorts to be safe
No_Database_7462@reddit
t-shirt, shorts and a buzz cut?
Elmalukat@reddit
I do
