Why did Croatia give its 12 points to Serbia at Eurovision? You're not supposed to dislike each other ?

Why would we dislike each other? The war was stupid, but I would NEVER say anything bad about Serbs, ever! The countries have been sharing a lot together for over 1300 years: language, cultural similarities, etc. I have friends from Serbia and they treat me just like family.
best_decision1234@reddit
Thatās basically the case between every two random Balkan countries when they are neighbors
amazingamy19@reddit
No, just Serbs and Croats/s.
MomcheMusic@reddit
Pretty much this. Hence why the language was called Serbo- Croatian and not Serbo-Macedonian or Serbo-Bulgarian. Huge difference between Bulgarians and Serbs.
amazingamy19@reddit
I mean, i do think we are more similar to Croats, but we also have similarities with Bulgarians.
No one would freak out if didnāt give them points tho.
StGeorgetheDragon@reddit
What about Macedonians?
amazingamy19@reddit
Are more similar, or would we freak out if we didnāt give them points?
StGeorgetheDragon@reddit
I live in the USA and I didn't vote bc I didn't know how. As far as Macedonia goes I heard some negativity from a couple Croatians who were complaining about Macedonians speaking Serbian. Also they were acting like they just spoke Croatian. Like there wasn't a Serbo/Croatian language.
amazingamy19@reddit
Macedonian and Serbian (Serbo-Croatian), are not the same language. They are somewhat similar, and partially intelligible, but not the same.
Maybe in some basic convo we could understand each other.
Mostly foreigners use the term Serbo-croatian, Serbs in Serbia call it Serbian, Croats from Croatia call it Croatian.
The difference is most Serbs donāt have a problem with foreigners calling the language Serbo-croatian, because they think of it as the same language (same language with different dialects), and most Croats, on the other hand, think of it as actually two separate languages.
StGeorgetheDragon@reddit
Yes šāāļø you're right š!
rrrzrrr@reddit
Interesting you say that, because from what I gather linguists basically consider the language a spectrum from Slovenia to Croatia to Serbia to Macedonia and then Bulgaria
MomcheMusic@reddit
I understand croatians when they speak. I understand about 75% of what slovenians say when they speak. I understand about 50% of macedonians say when they speak. I understand about 10% of bulgarians or rumanians when they speak. I probably understand russiana a little better than bulgarians or rumanians. Hope that helps.
Dismal-Host-9057@reddit
Romanian? Now why would you understand Romanian as a Slavic speaker?
MomcheMusic@reddit
Romania sometimes gets lumped into Balkans in some peoples minds .
StGeorgetheDragon@reddit
Romanians aren't Slavic maybe that's why there's only 5 percent understanding. Also I thought Romanian was more Latin bc after all they came from Rome, the country not the city. Romanian and Serbia get along like Greeks and Serbs bc they are all Orthodox Christians.ā¦ļøš·šøš²šŖ
amazingamy19@reddit
I mean, i do think we are more similar to Croats, but we do have similarities with Bulgarians.
Hour-Promotion-2496@reddit
What was shared for 1300 years?
For 1300 years they were in different spheres literally, only in 1850 was the language made the same.
If you said for 74 years that would make sense (Yugoslavia)
That_One_Guy1357@reddit
In reality, Southern slavs as a group were often borderless, until quite recently. We were in the same sphere under different authorities most of the time. And in regards to language, it was always a dialect continuum, the lines were rarely drawn there too, this is the case with a lot of languages and countries in Europe, like French and Italian, that doesn't make the Italians or French less similar, just reflects the way that regions and languages functioned in a more fractured medieval Europe.
Hour-Promotion-2496@reddit
Bro said āsame sphere under different authoritiesā like Habsburg/Venetian/Hungarian Croatia and Ottoman/Orthodox Serbia were just couple of best buds living next to each other, without borders, chilling.
Bro really moved to China and still can't stop making shit up.
That_One_Guy1357@reddit
Yes that's exactly what i said, and that's how a lot of Europe functioned in the middle ages. Peoples without a state had no reason to stay loyal to another one, so constant immigration and contact beyond borders were somewhat necessary, and the norm. This is not something that is unique to southern slavs at all.
Think about ethnic groups that don't have a state in the modern age, it's much rarer than before, but some like the Kurds and the Balochi show the exact same characteristics that I'm describing.
Griffith1210@reddit
Slavs settled on the Balkans over 1300yrs ago. The DNA is nearly identical. The language, the Shtokavian dialect of Eastern Herzegovina, was agreed upon in 1850.
Hour-Promotion-2496@reddit
Yes original Slavs. Serbs are on average 50% Slavic today. The rest is the original Balkan population which the Slavs mixed with. Croats are diverse and go up to 70% Slavic, some also have up to 30% Germanic in the north-west. Southern Croats and northern Serbs have a similar slav-balkan mixture, so they're close genetically.
The cultural spheres were on opposing side of the west-east divide. The language was made the same only in 1850, exactly.
So the countries have been together for 74 years, and in different cultural spheres for more than a thousand!

I "must" have germanic ancestors too then, coz there are blondes and redheads in my family. š My grandmother on my mother's side had bright-blonde golden hair. I saw pictures of her when she was young. That was, in her prime, one of the most beautiful faces I've ever seen. My grandmother on my father's side had red hair. I was stunned how pretty and slim both were. Both grandfathers were tall, strong, very masculine and good looking - one had black hair, one brown - and notorious womanizers.

Hairy_Builder6419@reddit
Of course you're right. But current threats are bringing more and more together. There are many ultra nationalists working together now, more and more groups combining every year. They see what is happening to the rest of Europe.
shysamurai@reddit
There's higher possibility you will live to be 200 years old than to witness Serbian and Croatian nationalist groups working together.
As i said, eurovision crowd is the most progressive out of every country. So it's only natural that they hold positive views. By it's nature it's a minority and so are people who hold extreme hatred for the other side.
But default setting for both nations is dislike.
MomcheMusic@reddit
Maybe if you are brainwashed diaspora or from some backwards village in middle of nowhere⦠but thatās not true at all. Many Serbs do business in Croatia and vice versa and go on holiday there and also a great many former Yugoslavs are of mixed ethnicity marriages and have bloodlines that spread across different ethnicity. So no, not true that all Serbs have hatred for Croatians. Best of day to you.
shysamurai@reddit

I suspect OP is karma farming.
But in case you genuinely want to know: Eurovision votes arenāt based on some online fantasy that Croats and Serbs spend all day hating each other. People in both countries still listen to each otherās music, collaborate professionally, and speak mutually understandable languages.
Serbian singer Zorja PajiÄ even contributed to the lyrics of the Croatian song. And the Serbian audience also gave Croatia the most points.
So yes, some normal people in both countries simply voted for a song they liked. Shocking, apparently.
buteljak@reddit
Costume designer for both groups is a croatian
Legal_Lettuce6233@reddit
One of the coolest pics from Eurovision tbh
crivycouriac@reddit
OPās premise is entirely correct though. Take a look at how (or whether) Armenia and Azerbaijan vote for each other.
RebootAndPray@reddit
I donāt think that comparison really works.
Armenia and Azerbaijan were in a frozen conflict for roughly 25 years, then fought a full-scale war in 2020, with armed clashes continuing up to what, 2-3 years ago? Serbia and Croatia, by contrast, signed peace in 1995 and havenāt had a conflict since. For someone who is 30 years old today, the war is basically historical memory rather than something they directly lived through.
Also, despite political tensions and nationalism still existing, thereās a huge amount of everyday interaction between Serbs and Croats now. Many Serbians vacation in Croatia, many Croats regularly spend weekends in Serbia, many young Serbians work on the Croatian coast during summer, and because thereās effectively no language barrier, people consume a lot of the same media - social media, streamers, podcasts, music, etc.
From what I know, Armenia and Azerbaijan are much more socially and culturally separated. Their language barrier alone makes shared spaces far more limited (unless they speak Russian or English).
That's why I donāt think the overall relationship between our societies is really comparable at this point.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
Donāt let this drama distract us from the fact that Azerbaijan randomly gave us 10 points. lol

RebootAndPray@reddit
Serbian and Croatian are like American and British English. You can immediately tell them apart by accent, style and some words are different here and there but that's about it.
Just like an American and British person who've never been abroad can talk with each other about any subject and intuitively understand everything without a translator, so can we.

The dislike you are talking about is to a large degree one big political theater at this point that there is a fatigue for it. Like a Steven Seagal movie that is being overplayed on a budget TV channel.
There is also 2 Serbias and 2 Croatias. 1 pair like each other, the other pair hates both each other and their own citizens who don't think like them. You can see how the latter works in what is going on in Serbia right now.

shysamurai@reddit
Has some logic, but not entirely true.
Bulgarians arguably did 2 genocides in both WW's here in the south of Serbia. Unspeakable stuff.
Yet it's one of the more popular destinations for us in the south.
Noone here hates Bulgarians truly, very small minority.
We are over it, just the kind of mentality we have in the south. We remember but don't hold the grudge.
But i've seen Serbs from other parts of the country that were not affected by the occupation, even from RS, adopt the stereotypes about Bulgarians being untrustworthy and speak of them with disdain.
MomcheMusic@reddit
You are taking about events that happened during the Balkan wars. When Slavs agreed to go south and take over ottoman lands as far south as they could reach, but then stabbed each other in the back and it became everyone for themselves. Bulgaria made a move towards the Adriatic and Serbs prevented them for reaching it. I really donāt think anyone cares or remembers any of that anymore other than bookworms. Even my grandparents generation hardly mentioned it much as the events of WW2 and the dreaded post war rebuilding years became much more ingrained in everyoneās memory. Of the stories I am familiar with and if they are all true, my parents and grandparents generation were literally starving and freezing to death in the post WW2 rebuilding years.
shysamurai@reddit
Bulgaria occupied south Serbia in both World Wars. Both occupations had for their goal destruction of Serbian culture and language and supplanting it with Bulgarian. Serbian men were kiled and women assaulted with the aim of Bulgarian children being born.
Literal genocide.
While it is true that the roots of the conflict started in Balkan Wars, Bulgaria did it twice and got away with it unpunished. It happened in the same timeframe as NDH genocide.
MomcheMusic@reddit
You are talking about what happened in Macedonia and IMRO and the roots of the Macedonian and Bulgarian conflicts. Part of my family background are old merchants from Belgrade and I can assure you they never mentioned much about Macedonia events as they are very far removed from those events.
zanimljivo123@reddit
That's interesting view. Serbs from my region did not underwent bulgarian massacres but we were still enemies on thessalonica, and they still killed alexander of yugoslavia. Remember that he was our king too. So we had clashes with them too. People from the south of serbia don't seem to hold grudges which is interesting to me. Before i felt the same towards all enemies of serbs, but lately not so much, i feel negative only about those who directly affected my region. I do not care anymore about bulgarians albanians or hungarians, like i used to

I get that people wants the myth of Balkan people hating eachother to be true. That we avoid eachother. But truth is we don't. Especially young people don't care. We are friends, visit eachother's countries.
We have the same musical taste so of course we vote for what we know. Serbian artists visit Croatia and vice versa. And Bosnia too. Even Slovenia
AmrakCL@reddit
Why wouldn't we? Taste is subjective but it was in the genre I love lietening to, the vocals are impressive, hearing metal that's not in English is not really common, the theme is relatable, and the guys are really charismatic and loveable. When I compare the votes I sent with the Croatian public, we overlap on 8/10 songs. Don't believe hate peddlers, our people don't hate each other, but there is enough nationalism on both sides to sow division because a threat close by is a convinient topic to distract from internal corruption.

miiiiiiiii123@reddit
Eurovision mentality is the opposite of sports, you always want the country closest to you to do well no matter how much you don't like their song. Serbia and Croatia always exchange points, except for this year where Serbian jury didn't give Croatia any points but the Serbian public gave Croatia 12, which i assume probably means that some pro-government people had been chosen as Serbian jurors which is sad.
Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro always exchange points, just like often Greece and Albania. The Montenegrin jury and public both gave 12 points to Serbia even though literally 2 days ago it was all over the news how the Serbian president said that Montenegro should have never left Serbia and how Serbia "loved Montenegro more than anyone". So, no matter how much cold blood exists between us, Eurovision does unite us for a night.

No, in fact we all love each other. No love like a threesome between a Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian. When the balls clap against each other, when it goes balls deep, when Bosnia gets double penetrated etc
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Because, on the contrary what some people think, majority of Croats & Serbs couldn't care less about 90s. It's been 30 years, smart people do not live in the past.
Yes, we shouldn't forget, but we should also move forward.
karlowolf05@reddit
People gave 12 points to Croatia, and that's more relevant anyway. Jury is probably politically instructed.
ESC-H-BC@reddit
I mean, if you have followed that contest some years you realize its something normal. I mean, they practically speak the same language, share the same musical and tv scene, also the diasporas.
AnySpecialist8179@reddit
Because in our jury was people who definitely don't deserve to be there, but also depends on song too. If we like song and this year we like, than we vote for it, if not than no. It's the same for croats. People vote for song, not for politics or history.
mahnatazis@reddit
Some extremely nationalist people do hate the other country but unfortunately they are just brainwashed by our horrible governments. Why they still want us to hate each other, I have no idea.

Maybe they did like the song.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
Albania's song was really good too, they got a point from the serbian televote too
Ujemegaz@reddit
I noticed that juries, in total, gave us less points last year, but public much more. This year the jury gave us more points but the public less. Last year's song was far more catchy and had a more intersting stage. I am starting to think that maybe Eurovision is not as unfair as most think. There are many good songs which are not appreciated. Think of Moldova for example and the epic saxo guy. Still to this day, i regret they did not win.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
That was the televote results, not of people scratching their heads at the 4pts one lol but regardless, doesnt look anything close to the jury vote.
I enjoyed your guys song, was good. Lol yes Moldova always brings like a party fun song lol, France with their singer was amazing too I thought.
TryAgain_error_404@reddit
The votes came form the Albanian communities who lives in Serbia
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
Song was still good, take the compliment.
TryAgain_error_404@reddit
As an Albanian, the song was emotional and all but definitely not gay and lgbtqfriendly enough for Eurovision.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
HAHAHA yes, youre right
although Poland's song was calling people to pray and she didnt have a beard, maybe you just have to get rational right? Less clothes, then morals are acceptable hahaha

Bravo... we actually love each other, and when i say we i mean all of us thinking people. OFC there's alway gonna be some brainwashed individuals, but who the f gives a f about them...

MrDilbert@reddit
Why does France help UK and vice versa, aren't they supposed to hate each other?
Senior-Profession711@reddit
It has nothing to do with hate or love. We are part of a similar or the same language area. That is why many Croatian singers perform in Serbia, and vice versa. On Serbian Eurovision forums you can also find some Croatian commenters. Itās all about the language. Serbs are the largest minority in Croatia, so they vote as well.
shysamurai@reddit
We do dislike eachother.
It's just that Eurovision crowd is minority in both countries, such people don't care about history or politics.
It presents a very innacurate picture of Serbian and Croatian relations betwee between people.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
I dont dislike any peoples š i dislike the government's haha
shysamurai@reddit
Very nice.
Then you fall into the crowd i mentioned in the comment.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
Idk what to tell you, whenever im in each country its fine, people are lovely and help as much as possible (strangers) regardless of what dilact i speak to them.
Whole family is intermarried between Serbs and croats, we are more on the Orthodox side so that makes serbian, you do a dna test is comes as croatian lol. Like to me the hate that surfaces, obviously I can understand, I was born into the war, but its exactly the same crap ottomans did and other powers did. Divide and conquer which carries on today, so I dont really buy into this oppositional stuff personally. Its politics and orchestrated by governments and our people fall for it. One day they'll learn I hope.
Sorry if this got too long for a eurovision post lol, I just find it boring the arguing and nastiness.
shysamurai@reddit
No problem.
I understand. But things are how they are, no use pretending otherwise.
zanimljivo123@reddit
What you said is true. Eurovision fanbase mostly gathers most liberal guys out there who don't give a f about their nations, people or history. As you said, they do not represent majority of people very well
PavelKringa55@reddit
Our jury is a shame, that's why.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
They didnt over throw the govt fast enough
SufficientAccount211@reddit
The saddest thing is that most of us genuinely donāt think Serbiaās song deserved 12 points from a professional standpoint.
Whole-O@reddit
Don't try to speak on behalf of "most of us" unless you're speaking of your split personalities
SufficientAccount211@reddit
Most Croats, in fact, think there were better songs(Bulgaria, Moldova, Greece, Romaniaā¦). Serbia was okay, but not the best, and not deserving of 12 points. But whatever. Itās just a show after all.
Whole-O@reddit
Source: your ass? Most Croats voted for them, which resulted in 12 televote points. And for the record, Croatia doesn't always give Serbia 12 points in the televote, but only when the song is actually liked.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
Serbians everywhere seem to be genuinely shocked their jury didnt give hrv the 12pts, but they gave it in the tele votes
SufficientAccount211@reddit
Thatās okay, they can. I think from a professional viewpoint Serbiaās song was fine, but definitely not the best out there.
Beautiful-Walk48@reddit
I thought both songs were unique compared to the line up this year and enjoyed both, neither were a dance hit. Albania and Romania's ones were also excellent (in balkan catagory)

No because we arenāt a hive mind that hates the other hive mind. I go to Croatia all the time, speak Serbian and have 0 issues
sajkoterrapefft@reddit
It's just like the nordic countries. They all hate on each other but defend each other if an outsider does the same.
amazingamy19@reddit
Because itās polarising. There are all kinds of people. You canāt generalise like that.
And people who vote in Eurovision are more liberal.
But people here will never understand.
Someone literally asked here how comparable our relations are to Israel and Palestine.
Like, itās obviously, obviously not perfect, but itās not like that.
More of us engage each otherās subreddits more than here, and if you have shared media space, you are going to interact more commonly and regularly.
Large-Assignment9320@reddit
They hate each other, but they just hate everyone else even more. The balkan solution.
Leading-Attempt-7364@reddit
As a Croatian, Serbs are dealling with so much shit right now that i cant hate them now. When they solve their's problems we can continue to hate each other.
RestaurantBoring417@reddit
No, there are no problems with regular Serbs, especially since they are culturally similar, but Serbian nationalists? Worst people on this planet alongside Ultrazionists, Russian nationalists, Turkish nationalists etc.
Daseagle@reddit
