How many of you still have close friendships from high school?

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day?

I bought my own used car in 1975 and drove to school. It had a decent size parking lot for students. We were in a small town. Luckily my parents paid for insurance and gas until I got married. I didn't work except for the summer before I bought it. I was very lucky to have great parents.

We have what is called the Shuttle for those that can't ride a regular bus. I had to stop driving because of a health condition and I'm so thankful for it. It's $1.75 each way.

Since October 2025 I think it's been about 5 or 6 times. I would get really dizzy and lightheaded and I'd get the spins. EMS came out and my blood pressure would drop to a dangerous level. This went on for a couple of months. I'd been told that "you NEED to go to the hospital." No one knew what was going on. I looked one doctor in the eye and asked him what was wrong with me. "I don't know " he said. I finally found out when I went to see a cardiologist. I have Orthostatic Hypotension which basically means"when I stand up my blood pressure goes down."

I live in a house built in 1959 and you come in from the garage and step into the laundry room. Come in from the outside same thing. It wasn't huge but had enough room for the w/d a big clothes hamper in between, a storage closet and most importantly, room for the cat box!!

Meat. Chicken for 2 breasts can be almost $10. A pound of hamburger $10. Hamburger used to be so cheap. For chicken thighs in the family pack is okay. I buy most of my groceries online because I don't drive anymore because of an illness and my grocery bill has gone from $150 to almost $200 not counting the things my son picks up when he goes to the store. He takes the bus and does a lot of walking. It's crazy!!!

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later?

I took 4 years of German too, 50 years ago. Can't remember anything but Trinkst du Limonada? I'm not sure I spelled it right. I would've liked to have taken Norwegian because my Dad's side of the family were Norwegian. My Dad claimed he didn't remember anything but when he went to see a cousin who had Alzheimer's they both were able to have a conversation! My Uncle spoke it very well. I would've loved to be part of that conversation!

I took German (4 years) too and can only remember the title of a chapter in the book. Trinkst du Limonada? Or something like that. I wish I'd taken Spanish I'd be able to use it now.

For a long time in the 2000s I kept getting phone calls from someone who spoke Spanish. I'd say "no habla espanol" but she continued. I hung up when she called you after that and it stopped thank goodness. I didn't know to say "solo hablo ingles" because I never had learned to speak Spanish.

I was severely depressed and I couldn't do anything. I was on the couch 24/7. I rarely took a shower. I was just existing. It was caused by a medication my quack doctor was safe. Then I went into full blown withdrawal after tapering off of it. I know I lost precious time with my parents. But after I recovered I was at their home every day. My brother was their caregiver and he never understood why even though he had depression too and had been hospitalized. I had no control over my situation. I have lots of guilt though.

I used to but not anymore. It's because I use a walker now and the few times I've been out someone has opened it for me. But I don't expect it to last, I had had surgery on my knee and was on crutches years ago, the doors were really hard to get through and no one held them open for me.

I'm sorry about the Fairmont, I had a '78. My parents bought it for me. I sold my '67 Ford Mustang for it. Never forgave myself. I was so embarrassed about the Fairmont when I got a great new job that no one ever knew about it or saw it.

I called my Dad's brothers an sisters in law ant and uncle. That's how he referred to them so that's why I call them that. Just like he referred to my Mom as Mother when I wanted something ",go ask your Mother." I call her Mom when I'm writing something.

I got mine when I was little because my Dad opened a savings account for me, I think. He saved up quite a bit of money which I spent on my honeymoon down the Oregon Coast. What a waste of money, we were divorced 5 years later. I know a few people that went down the Oregon Coast for theirs and also were divorced not too much later. It was a jinx!!

I don't always like to go to UPS ( I can't drive because of a medical condition) for them to copy forms like financial assistance that need to be on paper. I prefer to fax things like this to these people because it speeds up the process to qualify. I can't copy things at home because my printer doesn't work. Or if I'm sent a form, document by email I have to go to UPS to have them print it. I always go to UPS because I like the convenience.
