What can you buy in America for less than $1 dollar?

I was watching a movie from 1992 last night where two characters go in to a gas station and buy snacks for $1 and it made me wonder how applicable that would be today. Are there any common items you can buy for less than one dollar today and are they worth it?
taylorgrande@reddit
well our dollar tree that used to sell all dollar items, now bumped up prices to $1.25. so not much!
melmel1966@reddit
For now a postage stamp
beehivelamp@reddit
You can buy one brick of Ramen, 1 broccoli floret and 1 banana. I saw this on YouTube. She made a stir fry for dinner.
MisterJasonMan@reddit
I've seen a few things for less than a dollar at the grocery store: a can of beans, a box of jiffy corn muffin mix, a small bag of carrots, one of those premade rice pudding containers, a package of taco seasoning (49 cents iirc), a pastry item... I'm sure there's a few other items I could find too if I went through with a fine tooth comb at the local aldi.
triphawk07@reddit
A hardshell taco from Taco Bell or Del Taco

three quarters
United_Gift3028@reddit
Even our Dollar Stores now cost $1.25, with a few things priced higher.
Jsmith2127@reddit
I think at our local dollar general you can get a single Lindt lindor truffle for 50 cents before tax
Elenakalis@reddit
One of the local diners near me has mini York peppermint patties at the register for 65 cents for some local charity.
ClingTurtle@reddit
Greeting cards. Some can still be bought for 50 cents.
FWEngineer@reddit
Not any I've seen, usually they're $3 and up.
ClingTurtle@reddit
In what dollar store are you only seeing $3+ greeting cards? 2 for $1 here https://www.dollartree.com/expressions-from-hallmark
FWEngineer@reddit
Sorry, I wasn't paying attention that this at the dollar store.
BackgroundSame811@reddit
Not at the dollar tree - some are still 50c
Anxious_Drawing_3383@reddit
Cheaper than the stamp
sfdsquid@reddit
Mmmm greeting cards.
floofienewfie@reddit
Those little ice cube chocolates, 75¢.
BackLopsided2500@reddit
Those were so good. My friend and I would ride our bikes to our small town and stop at a little store and buy some. 😋
PuzzledPhilosopher25@reddit
Well there went all my fkn money.
crushdepthdummy@reddit
Small bags of chips are 50 cents, tiny boxes of Mike & Ikes are 33 cents.
Narrow-Durian4837@reddit
It was in late 2021 that Dollar Tree, the chain that operated many of the last true dollar stores in the U.S., raised their prices from $1.00 to $1.25. But for a long time before that, they and other dollar stores had a fairly wide array of snakcs that you could buy for $1 each (although in many places sales tax would be added to that).
CalOkie6250@reddit
Last time I was in Dollar Tree, the cashier told me that they are now raising it to $1.50 for everything, aside from the items that are already $3-5
EngineeringRegret@reddit
I was in one recently and many of the sections were marked $1.50
Environmental_Bar824@reddit
Yep, and now they have higher priced items scattered throughout the store not just in the Plus aisle. Some of the $1.50 items are $1.75 items now.
immew1996@reddit
Same with mine in Pittsburgh. Apparently they are in a shift right now to price things at $1.50 (or more for their specialty sections).
Suppafly@reddit
They've always had a few sections that cost more than a dollar, even when most of the store was set to a dollar.
TopperMadeline@reddit
Yeah, I’ve noticed that a lot of the food has been raised to $1.50.
Playful-Business7457@reddit
AI help with this?
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
Lulwut
ahall917@reddit
I heard about a phenomena going on where people assume that anything written with proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are AI.
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
It’s crazy because ai will literally turn your sloppy grammar into good grammar. I could see that actually being a thing that is already becoming reality. But yeah that was still weird to read he just assumes someone with proper English is AI.
koro90@reddit
This also means that people who have poor grammar skills think everything is AI because they don't understand that beginning a sentence with a contraction is incorrect or that the correct spelling is "snacks".
BFB_2455@reddit
When did beginning a sentence with a contraction become incorrect? “I’m going to the store” seems perfectly legit to me.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
They were probably trying to write "conjunction," but that's wrong, too.
russgrim@reddit
Never.
Seems rectally sourced.
Narrow-Durian4837@reddit
In case anyone cares, I have never used AI to help with writing anything, including here on reddit.
(And I made a genuine accidental typo with "snakcs.")
Algorhythm74@reddit
Totally. I actually regularly used ‘em dashes’ properly on my own before ChatGPT. Then I got accused of using it because I used them.
I can blow anyone under the age of 25 away by the fact that I know how to properly use a semicolon and I can write in cursive! LOL
thetonytaylor@reddit
Now its the $1, $5, and $10 store 😂
tattcat53@reddit
So much for the 5 and dime. Fuck I'm old.
imissher4ever@reddit
Even when it was $1.00 they charged $1.009. Most people didn’t pay attention to the receipts.
Literally made an extra .9 cents on every unit sold. Might not sound like a lot but when you sell 40 billion units/year that penny adds up into the hundreds and f millions of dollars.
Surprised other retailers haven’t started doing it.
Embarrassed_War_6779@reddit
Even then everything cost $1 plus tax
Suppafly@reddit
Depends on what you mean by Dollar Stores, do you mean the cheap stores that have Dollar in the name, like Family Dollar and Dollar General, because those have never been strictly 'dollar' stores. Or do you mean the stores where literally everything is a dollar, because those have also never been strictly dollars stores despite having most of the products priced at only a dollar.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
I never considered Dollar General or Family Dollar “dollar stores” and it irks me when they get labeled as such. I actually grew up in a town with a Dollar General as part of the downtown shopping district in the 1980s/90s and while it was considered a discount store, if you said “dollar store” it meant a place like Dollar Tree or we even had “99 cent stores.” I remember getting a pair of shoes for $25 at Dollar General around 1990. Don’t think you could ever get something like that at a “dollar store.” I got Levi’s jeans at Family Dollar in the 90s.
Blucola333@reddit
Up until around COVID, Dollar Tree was $1 in the stores, although I’m not sure about the helium balloons. I never bought one, so that could have been the exception. Sometimes they even had 2 for $1 items.
MagpieWench@reddit
in my store, mylar balloons were $1, to fill was $1
Blucola333@reddit
That makes sense, helium is not cheap.
United_Gift3028@reddit
And, fun fact, it's not renewable. Once we use it all up, polluting things with balloons released into the wild, we can not make or produce more.
Blucola333@reddit
Just looked it up. Why the heck is it not on a “just for necessary use” list?
United_Gift3028@reddit
The industries that currently rely on it are trying, but people like their floaty balloons.
dadofsummer@reddit
I was in grade school in the 1980’s, it was a common occurrence for an entire class, sometimes the entire school to release helium balloons with a note attached(like a message in a bottle). As an adult who cares about the environment and wildlife, learning about the destruction shit like that does is sad.
AAA515@reddit
But its like the 2nd most abundant element?
UnderaZiaSun@reddit
2nd most in the universe…but far less on earth
sfdsquid@reddit
They never charged me for helium at the one here.
mab220@reddit
Dollar Tree has their base pricing at 1.25 these days, and recently increased many grocery prices to 1.50. I’ve heard the cosmetics and skincare are about to go to 1.50 as well. That’s not including the “fancy” aisle where items are 3, 5, 7, and even 10 dollars.
ElevatorOrganic5644@reddit
Our stores are $1.50.
Grombrindal18@reddit
I can buy penny candy at my local Five Below, but it is 15 cents now.
silkywhitemarble@reddit
I noticed that, too! It was 10 cents each the last time I was there!
AndrasKrigare@reddit
Reminds me of an argument I had with someone on Reddit, where I was saying that with continued inflation, at some point the standard price of video games has to increase to be more than $60.
They tried using dollar stores as an example of something immune to inflation because it continues to sell things "real cheap." Which led to the obvious question "why do you think they were named dollar stores?"
kalendral_42@reddit
Plus you have to add on the tax (federal or state)
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
There is no federal sales tax in the US.
toctami@reddit
The dollar stores around me shouldn't even be called dollar stores, everything is just regular grocery store prices for everything. I think they have one shelf with some shitty garbage that's actually priced at 1 dollar.
soupdenier@reddit
Is a pack of juicy fruit gum still 35 cents?
NYCNatv@reddit
Im not sure anything and its a shame. I saw someone reference greeting cards and im guessing thats about it.
MrNimbus33@reddit

Academic-Drop9366@reddit
Gonna throw a curve ball here. I'm Gen Jones. When I was a kid, my dad used to send us three kids down the street to the corner store with $1. We would buy him 2 packs of cigarettes and at least 3 candy bars and bring back change. Blows my mind. ✌️
awake-lettuce0823@reddit

LakashY@reddit
You can buy a few individual pieces of tiny candy from the party store. Maybe 3 individually wrapped Now & Later squares.
Routine-Focus-9429@reddit
A piece of fruit like a banana
sics2014@reddit
And veggies.
Checked my grocery receipt and got a bell pepper for 80 cents, a crown of broccoli for 98, and some carrots for 40. The bananas came out to $1.04.
battlesong1972@reddit
Damn, green bells here are 3/$5, and we can sometimes get them on sale for a dollar or slightly less
PossumJenkinsSoles@reddit
I got an avocado for 50 cents yesterday and a single yellow onion for 78 cents
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
I just bought a handful of avocados for 39 cents a piece last week
AlexandraThePotato@reddit
A HANDFUL for 39 cents?! Dude I think I usually see them for 90 something cents each! I think a 50 cent singular avocado is a deal!
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
Sorry, 39 cents each
pragma_don@reddit
Recently bought a good sized jalapeño pepper for $0.15 at Kroger…had me in the self checkout kiosk contemplating whether I could live on a pepper diet and how much money I would save 😅
TheOperaGhostofKinja@reddit
My grocery store had a deal last week if you spent $20 on produce, you got $0.10 off/gallon of gas.
Bought: a couple of the “nice” apples, a bunch of bananas, 2 bags of potatoes, 32oz. of green beans, a bag of carrots, a bag of mandarins, a cantaloupe, and 12oz. of pre-chopped broccoli (part of a different sale).
My initial total estimate was $20.08 based on rough calculation of the produce weight/cost. Grabbed an extra apple to ensure I was over the line.
Bloosqr1@reddit
It’s getting rarer but yea at least in summer there are still veggies and some fruit that is less than a buck a lb. ( broccoli here is up to 1.50 to 1.99 a lb right now )
superficialdynamite@reddit
Fresh corn is like .50 in the summer
Evidence-Appropriate@reddit
Went to a store and saw someone selling banana's for $1.25, wtf are we doing
Aggressive_FIamingo@reddit
It's one banana Michael, what could it cost, $10?
j_ly@reddit
There it is!!
PatchyWhiskers@reddit

zeezle@reddit
Wait what, that's crazy. Bananas are $0.49/lb here
Evidence-Appropriate@reddit
It was one banana for $1.25, wasn't even that big either. Tbf it was a store at a university so they're professional scam artists.
CutestGay@reddit
That doesn’t count, that’s like getting mad the bananas are overpriced at the airport.
mp85747@reddit
You're becoming Europeans...? ;-)
rawbface@reddit
Well yeah, which store?
Where I live, a banana is $1.25 at Wawa, or $0.20 at Acme.
nicholas818@reddit
It’s one banana, Michael, what could it cost, $10?
TrashCanEnigma@reddit
Yep! Sometimes an apple if they're cheap per pound and small. A potato, too.
bjb13@reddit
Yes. Trader Joe’s sells bananas for about $.29 each last I looked.
notthegoatseguy@reddit
Even the 99 cent Arizona can is basically an endangered species at this point. More and more stores are stocking the variant without the price printed on the can.
Mite-o-Dan@reddit
Still 99 cents at the Safewary grocery store by me and I live in a high cost suburb of Washington DC.
But it does depend on the store. In a convenience store it could be $2.50-$3.
MainSeaworthiness115@reddit
Still over a dollar after tax.
castlenutjob@reddit
Yes, that is how US pricing works.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Some states don’t tax any food. Some only tax junk food and have different definitions. Some only tax food eaten inside restaurants.

Traditional_Trust418@reddit
Not in Montana. No tax 😁
astralTacenda@reddit
oregon, no sales tax. 89¢ a can at my local grocery store cause theyre always on sale for some reason.
probably the only thing i feel spoiled for, as everything else is either hard to find or costs noticeably more than the nearest other city, which is 30 miles away.
MainSeaworthiness115@reddit
You guys allowed to pump your own gas yet, or is it still illegal?
astralTacenda@reddit
been able to pump our own gas for years!
in some areas they will still have an attendant, to give more jobs in an area where there may not be many options, but you are not required to let them pump your gas. havent seen a single attendant in the 2.5 yesrs ive lived here, personally.
dirENgreyscale@reddit
Depends on where you live.
UnicornScientist803@reddit
Even if they actually sold it for 99 cents though, it would still be over a dollar once they added sales tax.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
Not here. I just bought two Arizonas a few days ago. Came to $1.98
No tax added in Montana
Semirhage527@reddit
Only in states with sales tax. A few blessed states don’t do that
gman2391@reddit
Even most states that have sales tax don't tax food items.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
Some of them don't tax items that go into preparing food but they do tax convenience foods that are meant for immediate consumption.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Mine doesn’t even tax fast food unless you get it “for here” and that’s probably the main reason they ask if it’s for here or to go if you go to an inside counter register. They do tax the soda though.
notthegoatseguy@reddit
Most states don't tax "grocery" items but it can be really weird as to how states define what is a grocery and what isn't. Like a Reese's will be a grocery item because it contains peanut butter, but Hershey's won't because it is chocolate.
66NickS@reddit
I think my state does sales tax if it’s a single can that’s refrigerated but not if it’s like a 4-6 pack that isn’t.
BryonyVaughn@reddit
Depends on the state. My state only charges sales tax on food and drink sold in restaurants.
Meattyloaf@reddit
You see sales tax is on the transaction not the item.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Kroger and Walmart for me have always been under $1 and Kroger usually has them in the cold case on sale. Most people complaining about getting ripped off on stuff like this make the mistake of buying them at gas stations. And with very rare exceptions gas is really the only thing worth buying at gas stations.
TankDestroyerSarg@reddit
It's been a long while since I've seen the 99¢ marked cans, and that physically hurts my soul
captainstormy@reddit
Even if it is 99 cents it'll be more than a dollar with tax.
Broad-Cranberry-9050@reddit
it's crazy cause the owner literally has come out and said he never wants to increase the price and will not do it.
Thankfully 7-11s and other places have honored it but ive gone places (gorcer stores, bigger convenience stores, etc) that basically want to charge like 2 dollars for the same can.
GreatRecipeCollctr29@reddit

GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
It will also be a different size. The ceo of Arizona ice tea says that can will stay 99¢.
CycadelicSparkles@reddit
I came the closest I've ever come to getting in an argument with a cashier because I was buying two different varieties of Arizona and one had the 99 cent price on the can.
She scanned the other version for all of them and I was like, no, this one is a different price. She insisted they were the same, I was like, well, humor me then and scan it anyway and let's find out.
Once I physically turned the can around so she could scan it, because she didn't seem inclined to do that herself (she was also eating crackers loudly with her mouth wide open and watching TV), turns out it WAS a different price.
I am rarely angry at a cashier. I have a high tolerance for people being grumpy or otherwise unmotivated at work. We can't all be 100% every day. But jesusfuckingchrist, do not overcharge me because you're too lazy as a grown adult to quit stuffing crackers in your wide open mouth already full of cracker mush and scan a second bar code on a day when besides me you have zero customers. That is both illegal and ridiculous.
Rough-Riderr@reddit
I just bought one yesterday! It was still 99¢, and since I bought it on a military base, there was no sales tax. The cashier asked if I wanted my penny and I declined.

No_Physics_228@reddit
I wish I could not support Walmart but not everyone has that privilege. I live in a very rural area and while we have United instead of Walmart, the prices are significantly higher and I’m unfortunately not in the financial place to be able to spend that extra money. I just mentioned gas station prices because Op mentioned getting candy at a gas station.
kincage@reddit

Smaller nuts and bolts in the fastener aisle of the hardware store. $0.30 for one, $1.30 for another, etc. Absolutely worth it, if you need that size of fastener.
Not_an_okama@reddit
Bought some M6 bolts last week to replace the ones for the taillight housings on my car. Was shocked that they were like $1.30 each. 10 years ago when i was buying lots of fasteners for my hobby at the time the fancy class 9 3" long 1/4-20 bolts werent even 50c each.
TaterTotJim@reddit
Harbor freight has good deals on nuts and bolts. 57ct assorted machine screws is $4.99
Downside is you need to buy the mix pack but they come in their own lil organizer or can be transferred into your preferred storage.
jckipps@reddit
In the hardware stores around here, metric fasteners are double the price of equivalent SAE fasteners. And based on the amount of new stuff that still gets built with SAE fasteners, I assume the price differential isn't just a 'here' thing.
Not_an_okama@reddit
Price was more or less the same. 1/4-20 bolts fasteners were within $0.10. I needed some bolts to make new crossbracing for a metal shelf and went with more M6 because id also just bought a 10 mm socket for my impact (for the car project)

Not much anymore Thanks to taxes even if it says it’s under a dollar you’re gonna be paying more unless you’re in Delaware, which is real close to where I live so you could technically get in Arizona tea for $.99 there and it will be $.99 I think some of the dingy corner stores you can get some cheap candy maybe

Connortbh@reddit
r/tinnedfish is the enthusiast subreddit. They have a lot nicer ideas. I typically just eat mine from the tin. I’ll use tinned anchovies for pizza or tinned tuna on crackers. You can probably use sardines in pasta just like you would other protein.

Cold Arizona tea at my local Kroger ranges from 88-99 cents. Shelf temp Arizona at Walmart is 77-88.
You can buy fruit and produce. Bunch of bananas. I’ve had various pints of berries on sale for 99 cents recently. Sometimes you can get the store brand individual frozen pizzas under a dollar. Bags/boxes of frozen vegetables. Store brand steamable 4 servings mixed veggies $1. Green Giant sauced veggies $1. Canned veggies were on sale for 59 cents. Discounted baked goods (like stuff dated tomorrow and put on the clearance rack): recently got a container of croissants for 79 cents and 5 bagels for $1. You can regularly buy individual grocery store baked goods like single donuts, rolls, bagels for under $1. I’ve seen a dozen Walmart glazed donuts for $1. Mini pies.

Hmm... The only thing that comes to mind is stores where you can purchase by weight.
There's a popular grocery chain in the southwest called Sprouts where you scoop your food into a bag and purchase by weight. I'm sure one-half scoop of oats, super cheap candy, peanuts or somthing similar would be under $1.
As for gas stations, only thing I could think of is discounted candy, bananas, and $0.50 scratchers. So not much lol.
Newmillstream@reddit
Worth It: Arizona Tea products at certain locations are big aluminum cans with pretty decent drinks, usually for just under a buck. The only item on my list you might actually find at this price at gas stations broadly, though some jack up the price.
Worth It: The Taco Bell happier hour sells drinks with unlimited refills for just $1. Good deal, but you have to show up between 2 and 5 to get it. Only some gas stations have Taco Bell’s in them.
Outside Gas Stations:
Worth it: Generic supermarket soda In 2 lite bottles. Some places sell little bottles of Faygo for under a buck, and that’s really worth it.
Situational: I might be able to get a few minutes of parking time with a buck at some lots.
Budget Eats: I can get a box of store brand pasta for just under a buck at the supermarket. That’s a sad meal without salt, butter, or tomato sauce which bring the price up, but the box itself is <$1
If you like bread: I think Jimmy John’s used to sell their day old baguettes for 0.50 cents. Not sure if they still do.
Don’t know: I’ve seen supermarket store brand candy recently for <$1 at a supermarket. No idea how good it is or not. There have been times in the past I tried similar stuff and liked it, but it’s either been discontinued or gone up in price.
None of my prices include taxes, and the total price might end up being slightly more than a buck depending on where you are.

For those who are curious on Amazon you can get 42 3Inch Tootsie Rolls for $8.99 (about 22 cents a pop) or 85 for $16.99 (about 20 cents a pop). So, that is how they are making money on it (I assume Dollar Tree's bulk prices are less than Amazon's but showing +/- Unit price explains how they can do it).
BTW on the "Dollar Store" not being a dollar any more this all happened decades ago with the "5 and Dime Stores" which die out or adapted.
Terrible-Image9368@reddit
Not in my area. All of that is at least $1

Maybe some discounted candy. Canned/frozen vegetables, ramen noodles. Maybe a box of dry pasta when they are on sale. You can probably buy a single banana or an apple or an orange or a potato for less than $1.

I think some of the store or generic brands of canned vegetables are under $1 at some stores like Walmart or Aldi. At least where I live. Same with boxes of dried pasta. And the big containers of salt, like the ones you refill your shakers from, are like 89 cents for the generic at my local grocery store.
Also, a lot of the smaller bits and pieces at hardware stores. Screws, washers, fasteners, etc.

Davmilasav@reddit
Quick tip: if you use the dollar sign you don't have to use the word dollar. It's redundant. Use one or the other, you don't need both. And thanks for putting the dollar sign first. So many people put it after the number, which is wrong in American notation.
Dear-Bet5344@reddit
? whaT
DecadesLaterKid@reddit
Unless, by your clever use of ? before whaT, you are joking lol (I just picked up on this after typing out the following...) PP is saying:
1) If you write "$1 dollar" you are essentially saying "one dollar dollar." I mean, not really-- but it's redundant. You can write "one dollar" or "1 dollar" (second one is not the best style choice, but it's understandable) or you can write "$1" or "$1.00," but "$1 dollar" is redundant.
2) A lot of non-native English speakers or non-Americans write "1$" instead of "$1." This is incorrect. It's an understandable error, since we day dollar after the number-- and also because we write the cents symbol after the number for cents without dollars (why we do it that way, I have no idea).
I can be a mild grammar/style stickler (among other things I do for a living, I caption TV shows), but for many years, I never really noticed the first error. Then, I shared an online community with a woman for whom this was her #1 pet peeve. Anytime she'd see something like this, she'd say, "one dollar dollar." That's all I see now. ONE DOLLAR DOLLAR.
Davmilasav@reddit
That's exactly what I was saying in both cases. I also say "dollar dollar" when I see both the sign and the word. I used to work as both a radio and a newspaper journalist and my editors would go nuts if we wrote "ten dollars" as "$10 dollars."
Top_File_8547@reddit
Don’t some countries have the currency symbol after the amount? I always assumed that was people write 1$.
DecadesLaterKid@reddit
Oh, yes, I guess I was thinking that was self-evident-- don't know why I didn't put that in my post, but yes, that's the most likely reason!

At a gas station? Not much. Some (few) gas stations used to have bins on the lowest shelf with individual candies, so a child could buy something like a single sucker (small lollipop). Up until a few years ago I used to see a one-serving pack of crackers for 75¢ or so. But most recently that same pack is about $1.25. Some gas stations will sell individual fruits, so you can likely get a banana for 50¢. Other than that, you'd have to look really hard. Even a pack of gum can be $3 or more.
At a grocery store, there are lots of things you could get for under $1. Fruits and veggies sold by weight, just get a small amount. Ramen. Certain school supplies during back to school sales. A few canned goods, such as the standard-size store-brand canned corn or green beans. At my local store a box of matches is 97¢, although tax will bring it to $1.05 so I guess that doesn't count. A store-brand box of pasta is 98¢, and that's a food item so there's no tax.
