When do you normally file your tax return?

Do you normally get it done as soon as you get your w-2? Or do you put it off as long as possible?
As I sit down to file my tax return the day before it's due, I cant help but wonder when most people get it done.
smile_saurus@reddit
Like mid-March, because it takes awhile for other paperwork to arrive or be available for download.
FlashyCurrent8022@reddit
During the summer. Husband is a business owner and our tax guy always files for extensions
librarypunk1974@reddit
May June… it really never seems to make a difference. My return gets processed as usual.
Alarming-Substance82@reddit
Ahhh and this is how I learn that today is April 15th 😅😬 I knew I was supposed to do something. Guess I’ll file an extension
liquidnight247@reddit
The moment my K1s come in
Porcupine-in-a-tree@reddit
As soon as we have our w-2s.
BannedByDemand@reddit
Somewhere in the middle usually. Late Feb to early March.
Standard-Outcome9881@reddit
Usually the week before it’s due.
Vert354@reddit
Me Googling "when is tax day"...oh shit that like next week, better get on that!
RVFullTime@reddit
Same here. We use an accountant.
Lillianrik@reddit
I file it as soon as my accountant finishes her work. But her work is dependent on information from a bank and that often isn't ready until the 1st or 2nd week in March.
Starwind137@reddit
As soon as I have all my forms.
I'd beike Ned Flanders and do it literally on January 1st if I had all my paperwork.
Drunken_Sailor_70@reddit
I typically file within a few days of getting all of my documents. My W2 usually comes early, but 1099s for investments and royalties can delay my filing by a few weeks.
Upset_Shock_8137@reddit
As soon as I get my w2
Ok-commuter-4400@reddit
I get my shit to the accountant whenever the last form comes in, usually mid-March. And then accountant files an extension and doesn’t file til October so I don’t get my refund until then. Bastard
xristosdomini@reddit
I try to get my taxes done in early February just to get them off my plate.
Carinyosa99@reddit
I just started working on ours yesterday and will submit it tomorrow. We almost always owe (self-employed and we suck at sending estimated payments because income fluctuates a LOT) so why am I going to pay the government earlier than I have to?
SpecialistBet4656@reddit
I do the return soon after I get my W2 and everything else. I file ASAP if I’m getting a refund and at the last(ish) minute if I owe.
bgjj04@reddit
I try to have ours done by late-Feb/early-March. But that's only because our Fed and State refund gets used to pay our municipal taxes, so I want the money by the time that's due.
Angry_GorillaBS@reddit
As soon as possible because I want/need my refund. I always figure anyone who is expecting money back does it as soon as possible while everyone else probably doesn't care
Illustrious-Fox4063@reddit
If you need your refund that badly then adjust your withholding on your W2.
Basically take what ever your refund was this year divide it by the number of paychecks you have left in the year, and put that number as a credit on your new W2 that you turn into your HR or Payroll Dept. You will get more in each paycheck.
Lower_Neck_1432@reddit
Ideally, if you can do it right, you should get NO return at all. That money that is a return is basically an interest-free loan to the government, so screw them.
t-poke@reddit
Exactly. People think refunds are free money.
Imagine you pay for a $5 coffee with a $20 bill and got your change back next April after filling out a bunch of forms. Stupid, right? Well, that's a tax refund.
You ideally want to owe or be owed as close to zero as possible.
I owed the feds 30 bucks this year, got around 40 back from state, so I pretty much nailed it.
Andy15291@reddit
It is possible to get money back even if you didn't pay in. Let's say you have three kids and make 30k a year, you get the child tax credit regardless of taxes owed. So you'll get a big refund, even though you didn't pay much in taxes at all.
Angry_GorillaBS@reddit
The child credit makes up a lot of it.
I actually like having a sizeable refund because it's easier to plan bigger purchases, the rare vacation, things like that.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
I don't recommend that for people who receive EIC. Because if it turns out you don't really qualify, you'll have to pay it back.
Cant-Take-Jokes@reddit
11:30 the day before they’re due 😂
Klutzy-Comment6897@reddit
I usually do it as soon as I have all my brokerage statements.
vino1oo@reddit
My account was able to file on April 1st this year, I didn’t have to extend to October like years past.
ProperBar4339@reddit
If they owe me money, as soon as possible
Real-Broccoli-9325@reddit
I am legit about to take a nap because I don’t want to do my taxes.
Frenchitwist@reddit
Within the week I get all my papers in the mail/email
SRQmoviemaker@reddit
The weekend before April 15. I like to procrastinate.
Existing_Many9133@reddit
I make my appointment as soon as I have all my paperwork on Feb 1st, and get the first available appointment.
Densolo44@reddit
I used to do it right away. Now I wait until the last couple days because I usually owe, and I don’t want the government to have my money early.
JustaGuy6298@reddit
i get multiple 1099's, so i wait until the end of february to really get a start on them try to have them done by the first week of march
allegedlydm@reddit
My wife does ours as soon as the last tax statements arrive. She’s a tax reviewer at a VITA program site though so she’s
HollowRaven15@reddit
Last minute because I procrastinate
phaser_on_overload@reddit
I hate having something like that hanging over my head. My taxes are simple, once I'm sent my W2 and whatever form it is for my high yield savings account I do it early on some weekend morning so I get to feel accomplished for the day.
cHaoZ99@reddit
Depends on if I think I owe or am due a refund.
tmorse85@reddit
As soon as I can. This year, though, I didn't do it until about a month ago because my chronic pain has made it so hard to concentrate.
TheFishtosser@reddit
Usually as soon as I get my w2
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Same. No need to wait.
lightning_teacher_11@reddit
Me too. As soon as I have my documents, we're ready to file the first week they're being accepted.
MeTieDoughtyWalker@reddit
Whoa, Mr or Mrs Fancy over here with their one w2.
Donald_J_Duck65@reddit
Not many people in the US work more than one job, only about 6%. So only if you change jobs do the rest get multiples.
MeTieDoughtyWalker@reddit
I was making a joke but I don’t believe that at all, especially now. I feel like maybe that was true thirty years ago, but even then I’d have been skeptical.
jiminak@reddit
Well… multiple w-2 jobs, it’s probably true. Most gig jobs, I assume, are 1099 jobs. So, still only one W2 if you’re moonlighting.
somecow@reddit
lol had to make my own, other three jobs sent them though.
Metagator@reddit
My thoughts exactly.
Forsythia77@reddit
I got my money all the way back in February. No reason give the government an interesr free loan of my money any longer than necessary.
Slight_Manufacturer6@reddit
You get money?
InevitableRhubarb232@reddit
If you are due a refund, it means that you’ve already given them an interest free loan for most of the last year
Forsythia77@reddit
Yes I know. But it's a fine line to not owe. But I'm not going to give them that loan any money than necessary
jtet93@reddit
It’s also just like… part of your pay that is owed. We don’t count on it but guesstimate a little “bonus” in February each year (we got married this year so took a little hit which sad, lol). It’s a good excuse to take a cute mini break in the depressing weeks that are late Feb through early March in New England.
SilverStory6503@reddit
Me, too.
bass679@reddit
Same, usually some time in February or March.
wjodendor@reddit
Yup. I get mine digitally now on my payroll app, so I usually do my taxes opening day.
borisdidnothingwrong@reddit
Baseball fan. All right!
CaptainPunisher@reddit
I have a refund coming. I do mine as soon as I get my W-2.
BankOk9472@reddit
As soon as I get my w2. Takes like 10 min if you're just doing basic filing
_skank_hunt42@reddit
Before I got married I would do it online pretty much the same day I got my w2 in the mail. Now that my husband and I file together we bring everything to H&R Block usually a couple weeks into February.
LionCM@reddit
I have to have a CPA do mine. I try to get everything in early, but I’m always last minute—especially when I have to pay.
I just need to e-sign mine and I’m done… except for paying.
My husband is from France. They just send you a bill.
Witty_Razzmatazz_566@reddit
Once the W-2 hits my hand.
CH11DW@reddit
Yesterday
tiger0204@reddit
I'll file mine sometime in the next 48 hours. I've found that the answer generally depends on whether you owe or you get a refund.
wesrawr@reddit
I woke up today and did them, cause I knew I’d be too hungover to bother tomorrow. It only takes 5-10 minutes but I hate doing them for some reason.
sammysbud@reddit
Yeah, I went through all of the steps a few weeks ago, saw that I owed $500 and shut the laptop.
submitted it yesterday when it didn't sting so much lmao.
NotACrazyCatLadyx2@reddit
skiing123@reddit
I might file my taxes this week but I've decided to always apply for an extension since you only have to pay the IRS by April 15 not the other way around.
I'm lazy and don't want to
gato-afortunado@reddit
I do it last minute if I’m going to owe but first thing if I’m going to get a refund.
DonDee74@reddit
I got it done as soon as I have all the information I need like W2, 1099, etc. I file right away if I am getting a refund. But I wait till the deadline if I owe taxes.
CoolStatus7377@reddit
Electronically at 11:45 pm on April 15th. My name is Cool Status and I am a serious procrastinator.
count_strahd_z@reddit
I suppose it depends on whether you expect a big refund or a big bill.
ViolentCaterpillar@reddit
I do it as soon as all the documents are available, I like getting my refund asap.
speper@reddit
Soon as i get my W2, I try to be as quick as I can to get the return re invested earlier gets me 3 to 4 months of compounding interest before tax day
toad_stomp@reddit
Lol, I just sent mine in on the 11th. I hate doing taxes and my bookkeeping is an embarrassing disaster.
TheBookkeeperLady@reddit
What type of business do you have, and what are you using for bookkeeping?
toad_stomp@reddit
Website design and last minute scramble.
TheBookkeeperLady@reddit
I mean are you using software or just Excel or paper notebook??
toad_stomp@reddit
Oh goodness. I get them done by the 15th, that is enough, eh?
Ineffable7980x@reddit
Late February/early March if I'm getting a refund. If I owe money, I wait until April 15.
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
I always owe, so I wait until April 15th to file and pay.
aagusgus@reddit
Yeah buddy, got a couple of thousand to pay this year
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
Count yourself lucky. I have to pay way more than that each year.
yabbobay@reddit
Why not withhold more from your paycheck?
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
My husband is retired and so am I.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
If you owe, you can file earlier and not pay until April 15.
Princessformidable@reddit
It's better to not file until the deadline in case something changes in your favor.
iapetus3141@reddit
How many times has that happened
jastwood1@reddit
That did actually happen this year for me, Idaho changed their income tax and because I had already e-filed I got an automated additional refund direct deposited.
nwbrown@reddit
Shut up and let me hope.
mfigroid@reddit
Right? Even then you just file an amended return and pay that one.
Emergency-Composer85@reddit
One advantage is if an unexpected source of income rolls in that you forgot about. If you filed early and made a mistake…. You still pay no penalty as long as the amended return and money is sent by 4/15.
somecow@reddit
Extension. Right now, all they’re processing is extensions.
Source: Worked for the IRS. They just enter your SSN in for the extension, no questions asked.
Also the first time in my life I’ve owed, ugh.
Common_Vagrant@reddit
I found out the hard way last year that I still had to pay late fees even though I filed for an extensions. So what’s the fucking point of an extension?
LunaGuardian@reddit
Late filing penalty is 5% per month. Late payment penalty is 0.5% per month plus interest. You did save massively by extending. But the expectation is that you pay an estimate when you file the extension so there is no late payment.
Odd-Respond-4267@reddit
It's an extension on filing the paperwork, the taxes are actually due quarterly, most do withholding throughout the year, and then calculate the actual, and file for the difference (pay or refund).
If you are paying more than 10% of total owed, you get a penalty.
I have to pay estimated taxes 4 times a year.
Lcdmt3@reddit
Yep. Usually first week of Feb. April 10th this year.
Colonel_Gipper@reddit
Typically mid-February. As soon as I get my 1099 for my brokerage account, that's the form I receive last.
gatorgal11@reddit
Usually a few days before due and I always say I’ll do it way earlier next time, and never do.
cecil021@reddit
Almost last day. We did it Sunday night, lol.
jastwood1@reddit
Normally after I get my W-2 and the 1098 from my mortgage company. I e-filed this year in mid February.
LvBorzoi@reddit
It depends.....getting a refund ASAP....Gotta Pay near April 15
Icy-Whale-2253@reddit
I did earlier than usual this year but usually February
vbsteez@reddit
did it this morning
Cameront9@reddit
As soon as possible because in reality my tax return is part of my salary.
Madreese@reddit
Try to do it as soon as possible, but it's easy to put off until it needs to be done. Usually get it done in early to mid March.
RightToTheThighs@reddit
I put it off until last week, but my taxes are relatively simple and it took me about 30 minutes to do
FataMorganaForReal@reddit
I'm working on mine now. Almost finished!
krill482@reddit
Did mine last night
waterandleaves99@reddit
Same
melodypowers@reddit
Me too.
But haven't submitted yet. Really need to do that.
InevitableRhubarb232@reddit
Same. I’ve been working on them for about a week, because I’m self-employed in is complicated, but I finished them last night. I got my state mailed off today and I just have to go log on and finish e-filing now that I got paid today and have some money to cover the software fee
brzantium@reddit
I owe money most years, so I'm not in a rush to file. I have my taxes about half done right now.
CalamityKid_@reddit
I don't get shit back on my return but I still do it as soon as I get my W2 just to get it out of the way.
sitewolf@reddit
depends on if I owe money or due a refund.....why would I wait for a refund and why would I hurry to send money in?
as an accountant it has always make me shake my head, tho, when people get all excited about a big refund and don't realize....you just let the gov't have your money interest free all year
Amazing_Divide1214@reddit
like 5 minutes ago
ResponseNo6375@reddit
As soon as I have all the paperwork I need, the earlier you file the faster it’s processed
CamiJay@reddit
ASAP until this year! First time I’ve owed. It all went towards my new shitty health insurance. Costs more for less! 🫠 I just filed yesterday lol.
ObligatoryAnxiety@reddit
If I owe, the last day possible. If I get a return, I'm filing it the first day possible.
Ivy7424@reddit
The day before it’s due? I’d be having a panic attack.
I do it as soon as I get my W2.
Ruthrfurd-the-stoned@reddit
A couple weeks after I get my documents due to procrastination
Angsty_Potatos@reddit
I usually end up right on the wire because im 1099 and clients don't send me my documents promptly 🫠
froction@reddit
October 14th
thelostdutchman@reddit
Yep. Complicated taxes take a lot of time to gather and record data. It takes me about a weeks worth of time to build a complete spreadsheet to send to my accountant so I do it over several months.
froction@reddit
Mine are pretty simple now, I just like to procrastinate about everything.
SouthBobcat5619@reddit
I was looking for my September/ October people!
imzadi111@reddit
My mom because she cannot keep track of documents at all. 😖 I think I finally got all of her stuff organized to access online in case she loses something.
CJK5Hookers@reddit
People like your mom are the reason I changed careers away from being a tax accountant!
imzadi111@reddit
Oh yeah, it was a nightmare until I took the reins completely. I hated and could not deal with it; but she is my elderly, 80+ mother, and therefore, a "client" that I am not at liberty to let go.
kingoflint282@reddit
When I realize it’s April and I need to do my taxes
GuessWhoItsJosh@reddit
Usually by end of February or early March.
Poupoo42@reddit
Get my W-2, say I'm going to file that week, put it off till late march, repeat next year.
ReeMayRe@reddit
The stress of taxes is unreal for me so ASAP, usually in early February
Slight_Manufacturer6@reddit
As soon as possibly… mid February usually.
byte_handle@reddit
I gather my documents as they become available. Once I have all of them assembled, I look at my calendar and schedule a time to get it done.
Because my job likes to wait until the last minute to send my w2, I usually end up filing during the first week of February.
Samstone791@reddit
Return? I wait til end of March every year. I haven't had a return in over a decade.
TeacupCollector2011@reddit
Mine are done and filed by the end of January.
Gymnastkatieg@reddit
A couple days before its due, if I don’t file an extension
BigCrunchyNerd@reddit
I always do them on Presidents Day. It's a day off but it's usually shit weather so might as well spend it getting them done.
MRSRN65@reddit
I WANT to get them done as soon as my W2s drop. I ACTUALLY get them done when it's down to the wire.
pacifistpotatoes@reddit
I usually have to wait for other forms I need so can't do on Jan 31. We always owe a bunch because my husband doesn't pay in enough to fed tax. He won't adjust it so I end up paying $3k every year while he sit there and tells me I'm doing something wrong.
JoeeyMKT@reddit
A mix of both. I'm not early or late. I usually slide in late March or early April.
Sabertooth767@reddit
I get it done ASAP, I filed mine in early February. I keep a checklist of the documents I need and then do it when I have them all.
smiling_toast@reddit
Me too. But this is because I'm getting a refund.
delightful_caprese@reddit
Yeah, I just about finished mine as soon as I had all the paperwork but I owed so I only got around to submitting in the last week or so
IllustriousCabinet11@reddit
This is exactly what I do. File in early February and forget all about it until just about this time when people are talking about starting.
MikeExMachina@reddit
Same, as soon as I have all the docs
babygotthefever@reddit
Same, but no checklist. I get almost all my docs digitally so I save them in my tax folder for the year. I have never filed later than March but usually early Feb.
miTgiB37@reddit
I files couple weeks ago and set the payment for April 15
TehWildMan_@reddit
Last year I filed and paid in November.
This year, I'm filing and paying tomorrow.
If I'm owed, as soon as practical. If I owe, as late as possible.
Zestyclose-City-3225@reddit
I wait. This is the first year i’ve had to pay, so i did it yesterday electronically which give it 2 days to clear.
StillC5sdad@reddit
I always have to pay, so I wait as long as possible
Last-Radish-9684@reddit
As soon as I get W-2s and my 1099 Interest forms. I like to get it out of the way so I can just mark it off my mental to-do list.
10leej@reddit
Usually it's when I get all the papers necessary to do so. I collect 2x w2s, a 1099, and a couple investment docs. On top of my own accounting. So some years I literally do need to wait until April. Other years I'm well done by now.
DesertWanderlust@reddit
Mine are complicated so I usually send my documents to an accountant early. I got mine done last week and am still reeling from the pain of it.
name_withheld_1229@reddit
This year it was February 18, took almost two months to get my refund!
CaswensCorner@reddit
I almost never get it done on time. Last year I filed an extension. I don’t think I got to it until June. This year I filed in January as soon as I had all my paperwork.
JennyPaints@reddit
I belong to an LLC cooperative. Its income gets passed through to members for tax purposes. Its tax report isn’t due until March 15th. So my taxes are never filed before March 15th.
SufficientComedian6@reddit
Filed extension with payment today. Will file return in August/sept most likely.
probridgedweller@reddit

Dallas_Cowboys50@reddit
The same day i hear from someone at work that our w2's are available to print, IRS wasnt processing them yet, but youre one of the 1st in line when they do. Tax return was deposited in our bank mid February. I have never even come close to waiting until April
Oomlotte99@reddit
I do it as soon as I get the W2. I always get my returns in February.
cofeeholik75@reddit
If I am getting a refund, right away. If I owe I wait. This year I owed money, so filed yesterday.
HughJManschitt@reddit
As soon as I get our W-2s
ZealousidealAnt111@reddit
End of march or beginning of April. I’m a tax accountant and I am so busy doing everyone else’s returns that I get lazy with my own
kidtire@reddit
I do an early version early January to get a ballpark of if I am getting a refund or will owe and about how much. If I am likely to get a refund I do a real run as soon as all the paperwork is ready which is usually mid to late February and file right away to get the refund quickly. If I am going to owe I still do the return within a week of getting all the paperwork but then wait to file until about April 1.
Intelligent_Fish3728@reddit
Usually the first week or two in Feb. We need lots of documents for various things and most have until Jan 31 to send them. I usually start the process in January as things roll in, but actually file in early Feb
AdamOnFirst@reddit
I’m a procrastinator on most things… but I really like getting my taxes done early. Did em in February again this year as soon as I got all my forms, so early I got a bunch of HR Block discounts. It helps me confirm my withholding, calibrated to cause an almost nonexistent refund but not owe anything, wasn’t effed up on the low side and move some money to clean up the prior tax year, like finishing off an IRA contributions plus dedicate any additional dollars where they need to to.
erilaz7@reddit
I tend to procrastinate and usually end up filing about a week before the deadline.
Responsible-Fun4303@reddit
We do ours as soon as we have all the required documents.
pementomento@reddit
Usually around September - I file for a 6 month extension, we have a complicated tax situation and winter/spring is busy for me.
Also, it’s habit from when I had a student loan that was based off my income. Filing later = natural lag time for the income to update, so a lower payment for longer.
JanaKaySTL@reddit
Figured out as soon as we get all of our forms, then postmarked April 1, seems fitting.
Foxyscribbles@reddit
Soon as the w2 is available.

SabrinaFaire@reddit
If I'm expecting a refund, as soon as possible. If I owe, I wait until the weekend before they are due.
swagmaster3k@reddit
I usually schedule mine in March. I have investments accounts, 1099s can take up to the end of February to be generated. I like to usually book my appointment between the 1-2 weeks of March.
jeremiah1142@reddit
Between April 10-15. One year I think I did it on April 17, because the due date was a couple calendar days later than April 15.
gregrph@reddit
Every year in early January I promise myself that I am going to enter each document as it comes in...and I do. Then I get to a part where I try to get a document and and the site says not ready until March or April. I put everything aside, procrastinate until a few days before they are due contemplate if I want to do it then or then next day off of work. Sometimes I'm just lazy and will file for an extension then finish in October. I did actually file before deadline this year. I've been known to file with a few hours remaining.
splorp_evilbastard@reddit
Depends. If I miscalculated the deductions on the paychecks and owe a bunch, I file as late as possible. If I miscalculated the deductions and they owe us, I file as soon as I have all the required documents. If I calculated correctly and either owe under a couple hundred or have a couple hundred pending on a refund, I do it whenever, but usually in early to mid March.
There were some issues with employment last year and we paid out a lot more than we needed to, so I filed on January 31 and got a hefty refund by mid-February.
SmokinHotNot@reddit
Keep a large envelope on the front of the fridge. Scan mail every day and set aside anything tax related When I think it's all there, I make an appointment with my tax guys, Jackson Hewitt. They fill out and submit an electronic version with payment or return info depending on the year. Couldn't be easier .
GreenBeanTM@reddit
Did mine today
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
We do them as soon as all the W-2s are available. Then if we owe, we send it April 15. If we're getting a refund, which rarely happens because we try to zero out or owe a bit (dont want to give the government an interest-free loan), we file ASAP.
carmineragu@reddit
Depends on if I’m getting a refund or have to pay.
Resident_Bitch@reddit

ericbythebay@reddit

fedcomic@reddit
October 15, every year.

I always did it as soon as I got my W-2, my husband hates doing it and puts it off until the last minute. Since we file jointly now and he keeps track of all of his papers (401k, student loans, etc) it happened Saturday.
AliceDoe03@reddit
I did mine today. Well actually I gave my father, who is an accountant, my W2 and 1099s today. Hopefully he can get it done very soon.
PreciousLoveAndTruth@reddit

If I know I’m getting money back, as soon as possible. If I have to pay, at the last legal second
Itchy-Nefariousness4@reddit
When times were more simple, I started my taxes as soon as I got my W-2. Now I have to wait for the W-2, 1098's , and 1099-NEC's, which I typically don't have everything until early February. This year I didn't get my 1099 from my buddy's tax lady until 4/5 -_-
So I finished mine today!
SalishSeaSweetie@reddit
I filed mine last week.
aannoonnyymmoouuss99@reddit
As soon as possible to prevent fraud. If someone stole your info, whomever files first is getting the return and then its a fight to get your own money back and filed correctly.
Crowd-Avoider747@reddit
today
EmploymentEmpty5871@reddit
Depending. When i used to have to do quarterly and I owed, as late as possible, if i get money back like my 24 bucks I got back this year as soon as possible.
Inspi@reddit
I do it as soon as I get my w2, but I only file it right away if I get a refund, if I owe then I wait until March so I can make sure my finances are in order.
TimeProfessional7120@reddit
We use a tax accountant, so it depends on how long it takes her to prepare them.
MagnumForce24@reddit
Depends if I owe or am owed
tiggipi@reddit
We do ours asap.
JuneRhythm1985@reddit
We turn everything in to our CPA by the end of January and usually have our taxes filed by early March.
rgg40@reddit
I used to do it ASAP, but I blew it off this year and I wish I hadn’t. Getting your paperless documents online is a freaking nightmare.
cardifan@reddit
I usually do it the first day you can file taxes for the year. Late January.
Caladrius-@reddit
Either in January when I get my docs or April 15th. There is no in between.
nwbrown@reddit
The day it's due.
I always say I'll file it earlier, and I never do.
SpunkyDaisy@reddit
I used to do it April 15 at 11 pm
For the last 12 years my, actually responsible, husband has done it as soon as everything is in
His way is better
WatchThatTime@reddit
I usually get all my needed info by the second or third week of January. I email it all to my accountant and she gets my stuff done and completed usually by the end of Feb.
InvestigatorJaded261@reddit
Typically from late Feb to mid March.
Physical-Energy-6982@reddit
I do mine ASAP. Spouse and I file separately however so with theirs it’s usually me offering to to them over and over, them insisting they’ll do it, until 10pm on April 14th when we finally sit down and do them together.
It’s currently April 13th and they still haven’t filed.
casapantalones@reddit
As soon as possible, always.
uhbkodazbg@reddit
Depends on if I’m expecting a refund or a tax bill.
alcoholicmovielover@reddit
I also filed today
TheJokersChild@reddit
As soon as I get the forms. Log into TaxHawk and boom - done.
Keeeva@reddit
File as early as I can, then pay as late as I can.
Lower_Neck_1432@reddit
Turbotax can receive my W2 electronically from my employer before it gets in the mail. My taxes are done before the end of January, and my tax return(s) arrive by direct deposit a couple of weeks later.
AllFiredUp3000@reddit
I schedule weekly reminders for myself to gather tax documents from Jan to March. Then I schedule a virtual appointment with my accountant by late March or early April.
All documents are uploaded and signed digitally and everything filed by early to mid April, ahead of tax day.
divinerebel@reddit
I do it as soon as I can, so it is filed, but unfortunately rarely have the money to pay on time.
JimBones31@reddit
Shortly after my last Double U two comes in. I have an odd schedule so I have to make a guess on when they will be so I can schedule it in advance.
ThePurityPixel@reddit
I have so many W2s and 1099s to wait for, it makes little sense to do my taxes until I'm sure everyone's forms are in
ToastetteEgg@reddit
I usually get around to it early March.
Clementinecutie13@reddit
Literally wait until the last minute. Just did mine last night. Has caused problems before so I shouldn't do that
traumahawk88@reddit
April 10th-15th. Ish.
Last year was 14th. This year was 10th.
I'm in no rush.
Jane_Marie_CA@reddit
These days its around mid to late February. I used to wait to April, but that got old quick.
Note: I make quarterly estimates so I am usually in a small overpayment that I roll forward to Q1 estimates. So the tax return is not a payday or a payment for me; its solely compliance.
Shoddy_Bet9619@reddit
The VERY first day they take them, AKA: Jan 26th.
Manatee369@reddit
About a week before the 15th.
Electronic_Bird_6066@reddit
As soon as my accountant gets around to it which drives me insane. I get him all my info as soon as I get it. It’s currently April 13 and he still hasn’t submitted it. I’ll be looking for someone new next year. Every time I try to do it myself I miss too much, so need someone smarter than I am to figure it out.
mina-ann@reddit
We start mid March and finish usually around the beginning of April. It's an ordeal.
Thereelgerg@reddit
As soon as I have all my W2a and 1099s.
chodeobaggins@reddit
Every 5 years or so
Ancient0wl@reddit

Rose_E_Rotten@reddit
I get mine done and then spent all in February. At the very latest early March, but I never wait till April.
MGaCici@reddit
ASAP. Done and over.
Charitymw1@reddit
Usually, within days of receiving my w2 and other documents. This typically falls to the very end of January to early February.
pinaple_cheese_girl@reddit
Immediately (late January). I want to get it over with. Married filing jointly, don’t really own any assets & have my taxes withheld from my paycheck so it’s pretty straightforward for me. Then I get about $1800 back mid-February. (For the past 3 years, anyway)
whiteorchid1058@reddit
I usually do mine in March. Usually takes a couple of months for me to get all my paperwork together. I would be too anxiety ridden to do it last minute as life usually gets in the way
Sufficient-Wolf-1818@reddit
I’ve been burned too often by revised documents, so now I do 90% in February and the last bit in early April.
needsmorequeso@reddit
We are usually feeling anxious if it’s not done by Valentine’s Day.
MHW93@reddit
I have every intention of starting tomorrow...
bachennoir@reddit
As soon as I have all my paperwork. Get it done and out of the way before I forget it exists.
Neo_Man_Dude@reddit
Literally yesterday and the government can suck my left nut 🤬
NecessaryPopular1@reddit
It’s not federal gov’s fault, the state we live in is to blame😀.
pinaple_cheese_girl@reddit
No state income tax in Texas. One of the few things I can blame solely the government for lol
Neo_Man_Dude@reddit
I owed both state and fed, but the Fed was 4.5 times higher than what I owed the State of California …. 🤬
So I guess the state can suck the right nut 🤣
NecessaryPopular1@reddit
Odd, but, yeah, they can actually suck both your nuts and cut them off too 🤣
Roborana@reddit
If I owe I wait until April. If I'm getting a refund I file as soon as I have all my documents.
JustAnotherDay1977@reddit
I usually owe these days, so I wait until April 15
oneislandgirl@reddit
As soon as I have all my documents. I get everything ready and submit it to my accountant.
growlithe49@reddit
I do mine the beginning of March. I’ve had it happen twice now where I finished filing in February, and some stray document came in afterward because it got lost in the mail
somecow@reddit
Early AF. W2s are due by the end on january. File that shit.
New_York_or_nowhere@reddit
ASAP, usually February bc my job sends the W2s in late January. One year someone stole my friend's refund - they stole her identity and filed first. I file quickly to avoid anything like that.
Rum_Running_Sailor@reddit
As soon as possible.
imzadi111@reddit
Working on it right now. 😐
ManInACube@reddit
I always plan on doing it early and end up doing it the weekend before the deadline.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
I we owe, April 15. If we’re getting money back, as soon as all the inputs are available usually late February.
primcessmahina@reddit
I think we filed ours in February? I don’t like waiting, whether we have to pay or not. I just like having other with so I don’t have to think about it.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I do mine immediately. When my son was young I got big old refunds, so that was my incentive. Now I get a small refund or break even.
missgiddy@reddit
Usually in February.
voteblue18@reddit
ASAP. We have to wait for several w2s and I9s (freelancer) as soon as we get them all we send them to our accountant. If the government owes me money you can bet I’m getting it back asap.
Feisty-Tap-2419@reddit
One year I got a tax form late, so now I wait until mid feb to file. I hated having to amend my taxes.
greeneggiwegs@reddit
I usually put it off more now because I have investment income and I hate dealing with it. Finally decided this year to pay to get someone to answer my tax questions so I can do it properly from now on.
I miss filing the 1040-EZ. Also I'm jealous of people without state income tax, not even for the money, just the labor saved.
colliedad@reddit
Well , it only takes me about 90 minutes to do, and I’m getting thousands back, so I do it ASAP.
Happy_Confection90@reddit
I filed mine today. I always wait until the final few days, even though I've owed fewer times than I can count on one hand #ADHD
freenow4evr@reddit
Ummmm.... I should be doing them right now, but I am still on Reddit.
InevitableRhubarb232@reddit
Tomorrow 😑 maybe tonight
I did mail my state return today.
I’m self-employed though so it is not super simple to file like having a W-2
Spare_Flamingo8605@reddit
I file as soon as allowed, day one, get my money very quickly
jettech737@reddit
As soon as I get my W2 and my wife's business stuff is ready to submit to our accountant.

thebarahs@reddit
February 6

The_sad_zebra@reddit
I always tell myself I'm going to do it early and then I look at the calendar and see April.
Different_Cherry8326@reddit
Around October 15 if I’m feeling ambitious. Sometimes a few months after that.
pete_blake@reddit
This year, just today the 13th. Normally sometime in March
hylajen@reddit
As soon as I get my w-2
BW271@reddit
If I’m getting a refund, I file it asap. If I have to pay, I wait until the deadline.
nettenette1@reddit
October. I still have to figure out a few pieces of my financials bc qbo f-ed up.
GreyHorse_BlueDragon@reddit
As soon as I can after getting my W-2
Zealousideal_Draw_94@reddit
April, usually the last moment. This year I was early, did it on March 31.
And no, I don’t usually owe anything.
ThatGirl_Tasha@reddit
Of I owe, 11:59 PM on April 15.
If I'm working a regular job and am due a check, January.
DahjNotSoji@reddit
I like doing mine in February because it makes me feel like I’m “winning” at being an adult.
Treje-an@reddit
It really depends on whether you owe or get a refund. My granddad always said if you’re getting a refund, file it soon! If you owe money, file it towards the deadline
IntelligentWay8475@reddit
Day it’s due usually.
MonkeyVine7@reddit
I'm a procrastinator. But also my dad still does my taxes (he is a tax preparer), so it also depends on when he can fit me into his schedule. Usually file it like the week before its due.
tomatocrazzie@reddit
As long as possible. I did them this past weekend and will be mailing them in on Wednesday right at the deadline. I mail them to be as passive aggressive as possible.
Raddatatta@reddit
Usually February / March sometime that way if there's any problems I have time to deal with it. But I have them take any extra tax out right around now. Though any refund I'd take immediately but haven't had one for a few years.
RVA_1989@reddit
As soon as I have all my documents. Usually by mid-late February.
False-Cookie3379@reddit
As soon as we get the W2, ours are pretty straightforward and we just get it over with.
earmares@reddit
Depends on the year. Sometimes early, sometimes the day it's due. No in between.
purdueaaron@reddit
As soon as I get all my relevant documents.
I try to balance my withholdings so that I’m giving the government the smallest 0% loan possible, but I also don’t want a surprise bill.
xmetalheadx666x@reddit
As soon as I get all my forms
ancj9418@reddit
Whenever I get all of the documents I need.
ShoddyCobbler@reddit
I have a somewhat complicated tax situation, so I file once I have all my paperwork because if I wait until the last minute I'm worried something will pop up that makes it take longer than expected. I filed on Feb 21 this year.
Able-Paramedic8908@reddit
I spent 20 years working for the IRS.
I was so paranoid about not getting my return done on time that I always filed in February (IRS is brutal on employees who don’t file on time). 15 years later, I still file ASAP.
James_Soler@reddit
I used to do it quick, as I’ve gotten older and busier I do it later and later
MeInSC40@reddit
As soon as I have all my documents…unless I know I owe a good chunk then I put it off.
redmambo_no6@reddit
Before the IRS starts accepting them
qu33nof5pad35@reddit
As soon as I get my W2s. Usually last week of February.
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
We have a business so by the time everything is ready it’s usually late February. Just got a call they are ready
sgtm7@reddit
When I worked for a foreign company, I always waited until the last minute, because I always owed(no withholding). When I worked for for a US company, I always filed the first allowable date in January, because of withholding and/or tax equalization, I would get a refund.
BackLopsided2500@reddit
I had to file an extension this year. Just in time.
phunky_1@reddit
That's depends on if I owe or not.
If I owe, definitely the last possible day, they can wait to get their money lol
If I have a refund generally whenever I have gotten all the paperwork to do my return from banks and whatnot.
TimeMasterBob@reddit
I get my paperwork the last week of January and file by mid February. Usually get my return by the first week of March.
69Nova468@reddit
Working on it today
KatrynaTheElf@reddit
I do it as soon as I have all my documents.

Anieya@reddit
April
Jmckeown2@reddit
Every year: I will file as soon as I get all the documentation.

norecordofwrong@reddit
When I get my W2 and 1099s.

Jojosbees@reddit
First week of April. We also do the estimated taxes for the first quarter of the current year around the same time.
GrookeyFan_16@reddit
I do a test run based on December payroll to see how much we will owe. If we owe as usual we finalize and pay at the end of March. If we actually get money back we file in February.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
I did mine yesterday, which seemed pretty typical for me.
SgtDoakesSurprise@reddit
I file it on the last day. Always.
It’s because we end up owing thousands of dollars each year. I’m in no rush to pay the treasury.

seaburno@reddit
October on extensions.
My wife and I get our W2s in late January. We have some investments (family partnerships) where we don't get the official, audited versions of our documents until sometime in August. We get the unofficial ones in March (never been off by more than 0.5% and 9/10 times its totally accurate) and can prepay our estimated taxes from that.

Pancancake@reddit
I still haven’t filed. I don’t owe or anything, I just bought a house for the first time and the mortgage/tax/whatever paperwork is making me nervous because the refund seems to high when I put all the info into H&R Block’s website.

No-Anteater1688@reddit
I normally do mine the first week of February.
musing_codger@reddit
I keep a spreadsheet of "expected tax forms." Once I have received the last one, I finish my taxes and file. That's usually mid February.
BenDover0903@reddit
Immediately. I hate the entire process. Feels like I’m back 25 years ago in highschool with a paper due in a few weeks. Just bang it out and put it behind me
handcraftedcandy@reddit
I usually do it the end of March because I often owe a little bit. My goal is to get my return as close to zero as possible for state and federal. If I get a lot back it feels like an interest free loan to the government and I ain't about that life.
They-Call-Me-Taylor@reddit
The weekend before it is due.
Famous-Pattern4364@reddit

LHCThor@reddit
I get mine done at the end of February. I usually have my money before April 15th. I always get a refund. Although not as much as in the past.

First week of February because I probably have all the docs by then and usually get a refund and want the money.
My parents always file last minute because they have to pay and don’t want to give the government more money any earlier than they have to.
laurcone@reddit
I actually forgot about it this year and randomly remembered last week and did it the next day lol
firewifegirlmom0124@reddit
Depends on whether and how much I owe. Some years I owe a good bit, some we get a little back. If we owe I wait until 4/15.
wmp8@reddit
Usually some time in March. I have a running spreadsheet that calculates what I will get back or owe starting a year ahead so there are no surprises. I match that up to the tax documents we receive and then input it all in FreeTaxUSA during a free evening. I adjust our w4 to try to get as close to zero as we can.
clutzycook@reddit

Grafakos@reddit
March or early April, typically. In a typical year I'll get all the numbers into TurboTax sometime in February, but since TurboTax often gets software updates between then and April, I hold off a bit on actually filing, just in case they push a bug fix that affects me. Probably very unlikely, but there's no harm in waiting as long as I file by April 15.
IthurielSpear@reddit

Then I usually procrastinate for at least a few weeks before I sit down to get everything done.
I don't think I've ever waited until April though.
NightDragon8002@reddit
I do as soon as I think I have all my documents (w-2, 1099s, property tax docs, etc). I like to get it done as early as possible so it isn’t hanging over my head
Castronautik@reddit
I normally get this done as soon as I have all my papers. Typically my work gives out the paperwork early, but I often have to wait for random 1099s from my bank, 401k, etc.
I got into this habbet when I was young, and really needed my refund check as soon as possible. Usually the end of a year with Christmas and doing holiday travels I'm quite broke. Getting that refund check as quick as possible would help me have extra money. This sort of turned into a time where group trips were getting planned, and I would rely on that money to pay my friends for my portion of the air bnbs / hotels /etc.
While I haven't been relying on that extra influx of money for a while, Its still a habit to try and do it as quick as possible.
On the other hand, I know someone in my family who does his last minute usually, and actually often times files and extension. I know there are some people who don't like the idea of getting a return on their taxes, because "that means you are giving an interest free loan to the government", so they try and put the money they would pay into taxes into a special account and try to earn interest on it as long as possible. To them this is 'smart', but for me personally I would rather not have to pay in money when I do my taxes.
GapAdditional8455@reddit
Middle of March usually. I do my own taxes and have to use a bunch of different forms so it's a pain.
___HeyGFY___@reddit
I do as soon as possible. If it's not done by mid February, something is seriously wrong.
moonbunnychan@reddit
I do mine as soon as I get my W2 because I know if I don't I'll likely forget to do it.

Senzualdip@reddit
Whenever my accountant generates all my documents and schedules a meeting with me. Usually middle of March.
otterbarks@reddit
I usually wait until late March or early April since investment brokerages like to take their time releasing their tax documentation.
grapebeyond227@reddit
As soon as I get my w-2 and all other documents I need.

Usually sometime in March. I don't do it right away, but I am not a last minute person either.
CroweBird5@reddit
I do it as soon as I have my W-2s
xxxjessicann00xxx@reddit
I just did mine today
inafishbowl17@reddit
I haven't got a refund in a decade. I usually do it sometime in Feb then pay a week before it's due.
It lessens the sting and let's me warm up to the idea. I just hate that it's a chunk of money to me but spent in a minute by the government.
Slippery-Pete76@reddit
I will do mine tonight or tomorrow.
fuxkle@reddit
Every year I plan to do it as soon as I get my W2. Every year I end up doing it April 15th
ITrCool@reddit
As soon as I have all my paperwork available. Usually by late-February. I never procrastinate on this stuff. I want it done and out of my way for the year.
midwestCD5@reddit
Early April
YarnSp1nner@reddit
We have an investment that gets us our needed tax document April 1st at the earliest. So we sit down and do it then. We used to do it like jan 10th when we had our w2s, but our financial life is more complicated now.
citizen-salty@reddit
There are two types of Americans on Tax Day.
neverdoneneverready@reddit
In Chicago back in the days before internet, they used to keep the big post office downtown open til midnight. They'd have postal workers standing outside to take your carefully prepared returns so they'd be postmarked before midnight on April 15. We were always in that line, cursing ourselves for putting it off that long. Then we'd do the same dang thing the next year.
elphaba00@reddit
Usually the week before it's due. This year was a lot quicker because I had more of an immediate need for my refund.
pagesandcream@reddit
Hey hey TOMORROW is the day before taxes are due. Three guesses when I’ll be filling them

Some time in early March.
venus_arises@reddit

Personal brag that we already got both state and federal refunds last week.
No-Profession422@reddit
Usually late March.
CatsMom4Ever@reddit
I do it as soon as I have all my documents for 2 reasons. First, I usually get a refund, so I want to get it sooner than later and not get caught in the backlog. And second, less chance of identity theft (small as it is).
nowhereman136@reddit
Normally as soon as I get my w2. This year is different since I haven't had an employer in over 2 years
NecessaryPopular1@reddit

hollowbolding@reddit

Astronaut6735@reddit
I try to get it done by the end of March. I have tax forms from various investments that often aren't available until the end of January, plus I always owe a lot , since my income is all from those investments (retired early, no earned income, and I don't pay estimated quarterly taxes). So basically I pay as late as possible, but give myself a couple of weeks to juggle things around so enough is in my checking account by the time the IRS and Maryland ACH transfer out of my checking account.
That_70s_chick@reddit
That is tonight’s chore. I usually do them in February but this year I just couldn’t be bothered.

I've owed money the last five years so usually around April 10th.
FoggyGoodwin@reddit

Been late March/early April while my wife was self employed. Adds some extra time to the process.
But now ETSY is a dump truck fire and she’s killed off her self employment. So it’ll be quicker next year. Back to filing in February. As soon as Schwab releases my 1099.
licksquadtraps@reddit
Valentine's day while doing a main story dungeon in ff14. It's a bit harder now that they shortened them but I still can usually get it done.
I don't know why I do this but it is what I've done for the last 5 or 6 years at this point.

I used to actually apply for an extension on tax day and did it in October. Nowadays I do it as soon as I get my forms

Farmer here. If 2/3 of your income is from farming, you have to file by March 1st. I had mine done and paid by February 20th
bigedthebad@reddit

A always get a small refund or pay a small extra.
No reason to wait.
AzureSuishou@reddit
I shoot for sometime in march but that has varied
rb928@reddit
I think you’ll find one or two answers: late January/early February … or about right now. I’m the former because I know I’m going to get a smaller refund, less than a paycheck usually.
People who know they will owe tend to wait, as do people who just procrastinate in general.
Independent-Dark-955@reddit
Some time just before the deadline. Always a procrastinator.
HammeredDog@reddit
If I know I'm gonna owe, I file in early April and pay on the 15th. If I'm expecting a refund, as soon as I have all my forms.
Regular_Boot_3540@reddit
Every year I say I'll do it in February, and every year I do it in April. I'm a horrible procrastinator. I realized this year that doing it in February would relieve my anxiety, but they don't deserve my hard-earned bucks (I've had to pay every year since I got divorced...)
Into-Imagination@reddit
June usually (always file an extension & pay the estimated total, but never have all the forms in time; my K1’s for example don’t even come until March.)

Demented-Alpaca@reddit
Did mine on Saturday. I started a while ago with Turbo Tax but it got screwy.
So I did them again with FreeTaxUSA. WAY easier and so much cheaper.
But I always owe so even if I do them early I never file until closer to the day.
SkullLeader@reddit
I used to do it in early or mid February but that was back when all your tax documentation was by law supposed to be mailed to you by end of January. I don't think that's the case any more. So now I wait until early or mid March to make sure I've got all the documentation mailed to me. I don't wait until the last minute because I do it electronically these days and some sort of system glitch can cause a delay - like I've had situations where these online systems reject my input and then it takes time to go figure out why and get past the issue.
sr1sws@reddit

Nihilistnobody@reddit
I’m self employed so I owe and wait until tomorrow. I look at it as if I have an emergency I’ll have a 6 month no interest loan to myself so I like to keep the cash in hand as long as possible. My busy season for work starts now too so I’m at my lowest actual cash for the year.
jharlson@reddit

Alarming-Leek-402@reddit
Tax forms like W-2 income statements are supposed to be postmarked to recipients by January 31st. Since those documents are needed to file, it's generally not a good idea to file until mid-February at the earliest. Any earlier and you may find yourself needing to amend your return if you forgot a form was coming.
_edd@reddit
When I was younger I would. Between how simple it is when you just have a W2 and the usual money-back aspect, of course I wanted to do it in as soon as I could.
As I got older, I had more documents needed, some of which don't arrive until later on (ex. brokerage account 1099) and now I usually owe additional taxes, so I just get it done sometime before the deadline.
Ok-Walk-8040@reddit
