Me too. Both of my Grandmas were awesome cooks and both made great potato salad. They were different from each other’s but both were really good and neither had raisins. I read about raisins in potato salad and was like “WTF?”. Mrs4Q makes a great potato salad and awesome deviled eggs.

How many of you have survived tornadoes and what was your experience like?

Growing up in Central Illinois, too many to count, we get put under a Tornado Warning 3-5 times a year. I was at work in Kirksville, MO during a tornado that was featured on Discovery’s Storm Chasers in ‘09, that storm did quite a bit of damage and killed 3. Three years ago a storm skirted around Robinson, IL, where we live now, and demolished a building belonging to Lincoln Trails College, a couple of homes and killed a 2 or 3 before jumping across the Wabash River and doing a lot of damage in Sullivan, IN.

Why has American soft power not managed to spread US Customary Units around more?

4Q69freak@reddit

Try reading some of my maternal grandmother’s (born in 1898) recipes…she used pinch, smidge, and dash. BTW a pinch is 1/32 of a teaspoon, a smidge (or smidgeon) is 1/16 of a teaspoon roughly .3 grams salt), and a dash is 1/8 of a teaspoon.

They don’t realize that most Americans understand Metric way better than others understand American standard measurements. The only measurement I ever have to look up is Celsius. When converting in my head I know there’s roughly 30cm in a foot, a yard is slightly shorter than a meter, a liter is slightly larger than a quart, etc. The one that kills me is that Brits use stone/lbs as a body weight, instead of just lbs or kg.

But there are 320 rods to the mile. There are 16.5 feet in a rod. We rarely use rods anymore except in the length of a canoe portage, and agriculture when measuring fence. Most woven wire fence comes in a 330ft or 20rod roll.

As an outsider, the American culture of "no questions asked" retail returns is baffling. Do people really return used items just because they changed their minds?

The company I work for has a 30 day return policy. You can return anything for any reason within 30 days of purchase. Yes there are the occasional “rentals” but those that abuse the policy are rare and usually get flagged.

We changed vets because while our old vet was really good, he tended to over anesthesise our horses because he’d been hurt a few too many times while treating injured horses.

Vets are different, small animal vets in cities make more on average than large animal vets, plus they don’t get emergency farm calls in the middle of the night in freezing rain. There are fewer and fewer large animal vets every year. That’s why some states like Texas have these programs trying to lure more vets into large animal practice.

We have an Elks Lodge(right across the street), VFW, Masons, and American Legion. We discussed joining the Elks now that we don’t have kids in the house as something to do and meet friends. I wish we had a Moose Lodge closer, because Dad was a Moose and so is my brother, but they seem to be slowly disappearing. The VFW and Legion are social clubs but for vets, VFW is literally Veterans of Foreign Wars.

When I cowboyed in MO we made fun of Texans, because even if they are from Houston or Dallas they think they’re cowboys. Some Texan told a friend of mine, who owned 100 or so cow/calf pairs and was a pretty good roughstock competitor and a #1 handicapped heeler, that he wasn’t a cowboy because he usually wore a baseball cap.

I had to see our NP’s overseeing D.O. and she sent me to a specialist that looked at me and said “Why are you here?”. I told the Dr that I didn’t need to see the specialist and she insisted that I did. Both of the NPs had checked and saw no need for me to see the specialist, but the first time I saw the Dr, she insisted I go to the specialist without even checking the severity of my symptoms herself.

What amazed me was the girls that went the opposite way. There were a couple of girls in my class that were overweight, not very attractive and 25 years later were into fitness and dressed nicely and I didn’t even recognize. Most of my class was pretty recognizable though. Most of us have aged well.

Same here, we dated in college in the ‘90s. Got back together 18 years later. She is just as gorgeous as she was at 19. She has gained weight but still looks way younger than she is. I don’t look my age, but I do look like my dad, Dad didn’t age much between 40 and 70. He only aged after 60 because he had strokes.

My parents were Silent Gen (‘29 and ‘30) and Dad listened to country but Mom listened to Dean Martin and Nat King Cole. Since I spent more time on a tractor with Dad or my brother I listen to more country and classic rock, because that was what was on the radio if you were on the tractor with them.

Not boomer parents (they were Silent Gen) so I still listen to a lot of classic country. I have Boomer siblings so I listen to Led Zeppelin, REO, The Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Skynyrd, etc. My brother (73) is a huge Beatles and Stones fan, but classic rock in general. If I’m just listening to the radio, it’s a classic rock station.
