What’s up with some American Candy?
Posted by dasdatt@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 112 comments
Why is some American candy so strange? Hersheys chocolate doesn’t taste like chocolate, and Twizzlers taste bland and like plastic. I thought with the popularity of them they’d be good, but it’s like they forgot to put sugar in them. Why? How are they so popular? There are a lot of great American candy but these two always stand out to me.
xnatlywouldx@reddit
I think Cadbury's tastes no different from Hershey's personally
jigokubi@reddit
I violently disagree. American Cadbury is my favorite chocolate and tastes like nothing else.
xnatlywouldx@reddit
Its your favorite chocolate?
jigokubi@reddit
Yes. I'm serious.
The UK version was still good back when I tried it, but it was a bit chalky or something. Maybe it's a matter of being used to the American version first, instead of the other way around.
tanbrit@reddit
Cadburys in the US is made under license by Hersheys and has the same butyric acid that gives it a vomit like aftertaste to Europeans.
Proper Cadburys is a mile apart, you can often find it in international sections of supermarkets or Indian grocery stores.
Curmudgy@reddit
All I can find for UK Cadbury is milk chocolate, either plain or with various flavors. They’re all awful, like unflavored but sweetened solidified cream.
tanbrit@reddit
I would guess Dairy Milk, Fruit and Nut type things?
Curmudgy@reddit
Yes.
TBH, I only buy dark chocolates, typically at least 70%, usually Taza or Ghirardelli.
tanbrit@reddit
My hubs is the same
xnatlywouldx@reddit
I have had them in the US and in the UK and they taste the same, brother.
tanbrit@reddit
I’m British living in the US and can tell the difference, I get mine imported!
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
I think the UK Cadbury's is probably a bit better than it's US counterpart, and they're both better than standard Hershey's. But honestly I prefer the inexpensive German chocolate they sell at Aldi.
tanbrit@reddit
Jealous of your access to Publix! The British section is way different to the meager offerings in DE.
You’re right though, Aldis German chocolate is great. They also have Jaffa Cakes that taste nearly the same as the OG ones
xnatlywouldx@reddit
Placebos for all!
tanbrit@reddit
Haha - to be fair my American hubby doesn’t like milk chocolate except the UK/ Europe versions so I’m not alone in this.
It’s hard to explain, but you know how when you throw up your teeth have an icky feeling afterwards? That’s what eating Hersheys does to me
shelwood46@reddit
I've gotten Cadbury stuff in Canada, which is the UK stuff. It's very similar but the English stuff is somehow sweeter, it is so cloyingly sweet.
jigokubi@reddit
I genuinely prefer the American Cadbury to Brit Cadbury—and that's before Nestle apparently meddled with the UK recipe.
But they deffo taste different, and they certainly both taste different from Hersheys.
upnflames@reddit
Both arent great but cadburys are worst in my opinion. Whatever the filler in the eggs is makes me gag a little.
shelwood46@reddit
I love the mini eggs, but the filled eggs are just gross.
xnatlywouldx@reddit
I like the Cadbury eggs but I'm not going to pretend they're like, superior to Hershey's or something lol.
Unique_Statement7811@reddit
What funny, is Americans often have similar criticism of European candies. They are often considered too bitter or too sweet.
Curmudgy@reddit
But that’s easy to understand. Our pallets use a single US Customary size. Other countries have a variety of inconsistent metric pallet sizes.
Palates are a bit more complicated.
Unique_Statement7811@reddit
Hahah. Good catch.
gummi-demilo@reddit
I like jelly babies but can only eat like three at a time because I feel the diabeetus encroaching
Physical_Floor_8006@reddit
Hersheys is good in its own right, just different.
Twizzlers just kinda exist. I'm not super convinced anyone actually eats them.
upnflames@reddit
I think twizzlers just show up in variety packs. They must just be cheap to make and used as filler. I don't know a single person who's ever bought a bag.
4Q69freak@reddit
I love Twizzlers. Twizzlers and a Coke are far superior to Red Vines and Dr Pepper. Red Vines always had a chemical taste to me.
tokin098@reddit
Can you imagine different nations, regions, cultures having candy that tastes different!? Completely wild. Its only my second day on the planet by the way.
Curmudgy@reddit
Welcome to Sol III. Since you’re interested in candy, I recommend lava rocks, though it’s better to get fresh unprocessed ones. Take your space ship down into Mount Merapi.
tokin098@reddit
Other planets have molten sediments. Of all the things a being on their second day on the palnet would be unfamiliar with you choose one they likely would be.
Curmudgy@reddit
But ours have HFCS added.
Old_Ant7118@reddit
This seems unnecessary
tokin098@reddit
Yes, your comment was.
MsMaryMack11@reddit
Exactly why are you in this group if you’re doing to belittle people that are doing exactly what is was made for?
tokin098@reddit
I answered their question, I am mo sorry if it hurt your feelings.
morsa_almond@reddit
Wtf you guys mean twizzlers are gross????? Hersheys yes.
WhereasTherefore@reddit
I’m confused too. Twizzlers are just strawberry flavored candy.
morsa_almond@reddit
They’re delicious and perfect for whipping enemies. And fat free 😂
wapera@reddit
I love twizzlers not because they’re good, but because it feels and tastes like I’m eating plastic cables.
vashtachordata@reddit
I think it must tap into some primal/animal urge to chew through sinew and whatnot after a fresh kill.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
Hahahahah fair enough
Ok-Flight-1504@reddit
Hershey's is my favorite chocolate - nothing else tastes right to me.
HabitTraditional4864@reddit
Hershey’s doesn’t taste like chocolate..? Huh? Tf does it taste like?🤣
Razrgrrl@reddit
Wax? Tootsie rolls? Sorrow?
HabitTraditional4864@reddit
Damn, that’s crazy. This is the first time in my life that I’ve heard someone dislike or complain about hershey’s chocolate
Razrgrrl@reddit
I dunno, even as a kid I thought it was not good. Dove or Cadbury were my preferred choices then.
HabitTraditional4864@reddit
Dove is definitely good. Honestly don’t think i’ve had Cadbury before, I’ll have to look out for that and try it
wieldymouse@reddit
Twizzlers has a taste to me. What doesn't, unfortunately, is Swedish Fish.
Old_Ant7118@reddit
Swedish Fish are lingonberry flavored and delicious! Not a fan of Twizzlers but haven't tried them for many years
LongRodVaughnDong@reddit
Hershey is just one brand. Twizzlers are ass though.
What country are you from? I’ll tell you what candy they have that’s ass.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
No need, my whole country is ass. Haha
OhThrowed@reddit
No, there is a need. I'm now curious.
shelwood46@reddit
And Hersheys owns Twizzler, did OP get a very specific halloween mix?
kbmoregirl@reddit
I've always liked the peelable Twizzlers, but I'm not fond of the rest
LongRodVaughnDong@reddit
I like those too.
Bluemonogi@reddit
There are a great many candy companies in the US. Not all candies taste good to all people. I have not eaten a twizzler since I was young. I remember them as being okay but not a favorite. They may have changed.
Do you like all candy produced on your country?
StanleyQPrick@reddit
Good question! What's up with German kid menu desserts? Ice milk (no cream) in a sundae glass with an unflavored wafer and unsweetened whipped cream! So tasty it will make you wonder what you did wrong. Enjoy the 5 pfennig plastic car that was included with your treat. The wheels have a separate axle, but will not turn. Is it your fault?
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
Hahaha I don’t know, I’ve never been to Germany but I’ll make sure I avoid that when I do.
framptal_tromwibbler@reddit
Never understood the hate for Hershey's chocolate. I think it's delicious, and I've tried other brands too, like Dove, Ghirardelli, Milka, etc. Those are great, too, but I don't think Hershey's is awful by comparison.
I agree Twizzlers are disgusting. Another American candy I can't stand are Tootsie Rolls. Ugh, chocolate flavored wax. Can't believe I used to like them as a kid.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
I don’t mind tootsie rolls tbh but the candy corn is another one I can’t do haha tastes like wax to my foreign taste buds haha
Zigglyjiggly@reddit
Twizzlers have always been subpar licorice. Red Vines are superior. Hershey's recently got rid of the cacao in their chocolate but are supposed to be bringing it back later thisbyear or next.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
Thank you for the info. I’ve got red vines on the list next!
mynamesnotcarter@reddit
I can’t stand Twizzlers but love Red Vines. Have you had those? Also there are great chocolates out there, don’t bother with Hersheys if you don’t like it.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
I’ll try red vines next thank you, see a few people suggest it.
OceanPoet87@reddit
Herseys is watered down with cocoa instead of cacao. There are American candies that actually have much higher levels of cacao and dark chocolate but you have to know where to look.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
I’ll try red vines next thank you!
BioDriver@reddit
Profit maximization by using crappy ingredients to keep costs down. Twizzlers and Hersheys used to be good, but that was decades ago. Reese's also used to use actual peanut butter instead of whatever the hell that sugary brown corn starch abomination now is.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
Ah thank you. I was thinking this might be the case just was curious because nerds are awesome, and super sweet.
TiFist@reddit
American chocolate originally added buyric acid as a milk preservative, and it became a taste many Americans acquired. No longer necessary, it's added by tradition to Hershey's.
It's not my favorite but it doesn't taste like vomit to most Americans because we acquired the taste.
Twizzlers are just nasty.
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
Just stop with this internet bullshit.
NOLA-VeeRAD@reddit
If you’re looking to avoid internet bullshit, Reddit is a strange place to hangout
13moman@reddit
Don't worry, there's plenty of sugar in all of them. I personally think (no evidence) that all this stuff used to taste differently and that they've slowly changed the ingredients to cheap non-food and a lot of people didn't notice. But if you ate them decades ago and tried them now, you'd find them disgusting or bland. Of course, they might always have been crap.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
I thought maybe it had something to do with the cost of sugar and the supply of corn syrup as a sweetener. Thought maybe there was a history there I wouldn’t know as not being from there.
Razrgrrl@reddit
American chocolate, especially in those cheap candy bars, is absolute ass. They weren’t great when I was a child and many of them seem to have gotten worse. Often this seems to be about using corn based sweeteners. Or at least that’s my opinion. You can get much better chocolate either in specialty shops or upscale grocery stores. It’ll definitely cost you much more than the gas station candy bars haha. Even as a child I thought Hershey’s tasted like wax. I don’t even want it in s’mores, I won’t use it while baking. I can usually find Bakers or Ghirardelli chocolate for baking. If my only option is Hershey’s, I just pick another recipe. I make a delicious chocolate chip cookie that’s thin, crispy and sprinkled with sea salt. You need a halfway decent semi sweet chocolate to make it work.
D3rpyDucky24@reddit
How do you feel about root beer? I often hear it tastes like medicine to people not from here.
dasdatt@reddit (OP)
I love root beer personally!
vashtachordata@reddit
Twizzlers tasting like vaguely sweetened wax is part of their weird appeal.
shelwood46@reddit
When I was a kid, it was a big movie snack, you'd bite off the ends and use it as a straw for your soda since it is hollow in the middle.
markpemble@reddit
Believe me. A lot of Americans think original Twizzlers taste like plastic.
deltalimes@reddit
I’ve always preferred red vines
shelwood46@reddit
I'd never heard of Red Vines until Lazy Sunday. They sell them out East now, but they really didn't until then. Nibs are good.
mac6uffin@reddit
Mr. Pibb and red vines equals crazy delicious!
makawakatakanaka@reddit
Those people are correct, but it’s delicious plastic
BrainFartTheFirst@reddit
I'm one of. Twizzlers suck.
miseod@reddit
The hershey chocolate thing is because they do something to the milk during the process that slightly sours the chocolate iirc
Remarkable-Rush-9085@reddit
Yeah, I think these are pretty bad examples of candy us Americans think have great taste. A lot of Americans are used to the taste of Hersheys and think it's fine but it's not considered exceptionally tasty and Twizzlers are kind of a bland waxy licorice you generally get for cheaper in a Halloween candy bag or something. Not that some people don't like them, just most people think they are bland.
Personally I'm a Trolli Sour Gummy Worm and Skittle fan. I also like a good horehound (very unpopular) hard candy, starburst (regular and jelly beans), and nerds (especially gummy cluster nerds). For chocolate I prefer to splurge on something local and small batch since I don't eat chocolate bars that often. If I'm having chocolate it's generally like chocolate frosting on a yellow cake or something.
gigisnappooh@reddit
Hersheys has not been the same since they started making it in China, and it just gets worse. In the 60’s it was so much better.
sobeboy3131_@reddit
Hersheys is cheap and I think it being industrialized, cheap chocolate available to the masses was part of its original appeal. From there people acquired a taste for it from childhood and it has remained popular. Most of us in the US will 100% agree with you that your favorite european chocolate is objectively better... but I bet it doesn't have its own theme park
I have not seen anyone buy or eat a twizzler since I was at the age for trick or treating
unoredtwo@reddit
When you grow up eating only dark chocolate, Hersey’s tastes like sour milk, so I’ve been told. But I grew up with it, and frankly I find it delicious.
Historical_Tax6679@reddit
Who are you and where are YOU from?
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Should be a rule in this sub to say where you're from
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
I love twizzlers, but I think it might be a nostalgia thing. They had them at movie theaters in Massachusetts when I was growing up and never had red vines. Something about that strawberry taste with Coke and movie theater popcorn.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
We have a different pallet than say Europeans. We also grew up with Hersheys, you ever make a smores over here, you use Hersheys for it
maxim38@reddit
enshittification - they used to taste better.
Junior-Reflection-43@reddit
Have they already started making changes to remove artificial colors, etc. what will happen to jelly beans?
CutiePopIceberg@reddit
Two candies that the manufacturer has cut cut cut quality ingredients and processes til it doesnt taste like the og and is going to coast on nostalgia til they bankrupt. yum.
tamster0111@reddit
Twizzlers taste like sadness. You need to go for the Red Vines!
DrProfessorSatan@reddit
Twizzlers are amazing. It’s an acquired taste. There’s divided opinions here as well.
Hershey’s chocolate is gross. I agree. Idk why it’s so popular.
BoofusDewberry@reddit
A lot of us also think Hershey’s chocolate bars and Twizzlers taste like garbage
virtual_human@reddit
Herseys chocolate tastes like chocolate, just not good chocolate. That's said there are horrible candies all over the world and some Asian ones that are just plain weird.
richpaul6806@reddit
I think most Americans will agree with you. The only time I have had either is after Halloween or when a receptionist or bank teller or something has a bowl out.
wegochai@reddit
Welp I love a little snack size Hershey’s chocolate (always my pick in a candy bowl) and I do like twizzlers. Best part about twizzler is I only need one or two and I’m satisfied.
Loud_Inspector_9782@reddit
Try Dove dark chocolate. It is delicious.
HooksNHaunts@reddit
Twizzlers have other types of twizzlers than the bland ones. I usually get the orange cream ones. Hersheys also has a ton of chocolate that doesn’t just taste like the standard. Some candy is really old and because of that it tends to not fit modern palates unless you grew up with it.
jessek@reddit
If you’re eating Hershey, you’re eating bad candy. I don’t eat much now but M&M Mars had my favorite chocolates.
siestarrific@reddit
Corn syrup probably and other artificial products
LongRodVaughnDong@reddit
You can’t taste the difference between granulated sugar and HFCS…
Goldfitz17@reddit
Hersheys is barely chocolate, it's disgusting. Twizzlers are decent as a child but not great as an adult. A lot of our candy is extremely processed. Living in the US i rarely buy US candy because it is so bad.
ComprehensiveFun6875@reddit
Because the processed food here is barely able to be considered food. And when you are born in America & grow up in America you become desensitized to how disgusting it is.
pomegranatesssss333@reddit
Why are you asking us?
RemnantSith@reddit
Ive never liked hershey milk chocolate as a kid. But their white chocolate cookies and cream are really good. Ive always hated twizzlers
