My 20 YO co-worker didn't understand why I called Mark Wahlberg Marky Mark, so I sent him this.

Damn i forgot how much this looks and sounds like an obnoxious gym class. Cmon cmon! Feel it!
here_now_be@reddit
Only if the class leader snorted a pound of coke before hand.
here_now_be@reddit
Never knew you could get a contact high from watching a video if someone takes enough coke until now.
Mistervimes65@reddit
I still call him Marky Mark.
SufficientStep154@reddit
me too but I love him even more as an actor now.
Mistervimes65@reddit
No question. He's an excellent performer.
Lifereaper7@reddit
I wish you could have recorded the reaction.
the_answer_is_RUSH@reddit
God this was a crime against music.
CountHonorius@reddit
Those tail end years of the '80s were sad. They almost wiped away the musical glory of the decade.
CountHonorius@reddit
Whenever I see him in a flick I say "Marky Mark!" LOL he'll never live it down.
sonjafely@reddit
Hahahahaha yassss i will never not refer to him as Marky Mark
andymorphic@reddit
convicted of a hate crime
verstohlen@reddit
It is quite the story arc, isn't it, to see how far he's come and successful he became after that. Even after making mistakes like that, one can come back from it if they repent and change themselves and change their ways.
Rurumo666@reddit
This video mas made 3 years after he beat a random Vietnamese man on the street until he went blind. He should have gotten 20 years for his EXTENSIVE list of hate crimes, instead he became a millionaire a few years later.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
"making mistakes" is a rather charitable choice of words.
ChoadMcGillicuddy@reddit
Yeah..."whoopsie!...I blinded a guy."
armaedes@reddit
I still blame him for not being on that plane to stop 9/11.
UberBricky80@reddit
Good Vibrations was the first CD I ever bought
Darkbird79@reddit
Mine was Paula Abdul's Forever Your Girl. This was when it came out and before I had any real taste in music. Thank god for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine. etc. I dodged a bullet in 91.
ether_reddit@reddit
That was the first tape I ever bought!!!
UberBricky80@reddit
Yeah, I quickly pivoted in grunge after that too
larz0@reddit
This was fun to dance to
pogulup@reddit
I don't get how the kids today have the world at the fucking fingertips are so so clueless about anything that took place before the day they were born. You can learn about anything instantly but I knew more at their age from broadcast TV, newspapers, and the library.
CowboyNinjaD@reddit
Having access to all that is precisely why they don't know anything outside of their own extremely focused interests. They have their own phones or tablets and just tune everything else out.
When we were kids, we got exposed to older music and movies and TV shows because we just had to listen to or watch whatever our parents or other adults were listening to or watching.
Mom liked the oldies station, so we got to listen to the Turtles and the Kingsmen and the Beach Boys when we rode around with mom.
Dad liked to watch sports and sitcoms, so we go to watch football and baseball and Cheers and MASH unless we wanted to go hang out in our room or go to bed early.
And I honestly can't blame kids. If I had been able to put in some headphones and stream He-Man and Transformers on my own personal computer as a child instead of listening to my parents' old music, I definitely would have done that.
anniemdi@reddit
So many are not learning in school. They are spoon fed just enough information to get them past the test and maybe into the next grade. They aren't absorbing anything of importance at any point. It's a stream of garbage going in from their phones and screens. I know 20+ year olds that can't use a calendar, they can't read past a 3rd grade level, and they can't have a job interview without their parent. And they aren't people with disabilities.
They just we're taught by anyone at any point. And this is not to speak ill of teachers y'all are facing an insurmountable task trying to deal with parents that take zero responsibility for their child's education and behavior.
Dez-Smores@reddit
I learned all about 50s and 60s music from late night ads for Time Life records. Quick video clips with artists' names, all the genres eventually!
EttaJamesKitty@reddit
Totally agree. I was born in the 70s, but I learned about music, tv shows, movies, books, fashion, etc from the decades before my existence. Maybe we absorbed more of the world around us b/c we weren't fixated on devices that control our every thought.
OldGamerX@reddit
He look definitely inspired his fellow Bostonian, 'The Doctor of Thuganomics' John Cena
Jimmy_LoMein@reddit
Yeah, I still call him Marky Mark. I still say John Cougar too.
A_friend_called_Five@reddit
The real old schoolers call him "Johnny Cougar".
PaperbackBuddha@reddit
There was an old MTV parody that had him as John Cougar Mellencamp Schlossberg or something like that.
Might be the same one where Daisy Fuentes kicked Axl Rose’s ass.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
I mostly remember him being called "John Mellen Cougarcamp".
ryancementhead@reddit
banksy_h8r@reddit
It didn't occur to me until seeing this how much Marky Mark was the prototype for the jock-hiphop-bros we've had for the last 35 years.
It's almost impressive as a watershed cultural moment, if hadn't unleashed so much stupidity.
JustSomeGuy422@reddit
I can feel the cringe. But good on him for pivoting from one-hit wonder to career actor.
TheOsirisOfThisShit_@reddit
The fact that Donny and Mark Wahlberg are still famous is pretty amazing.
Jonathan_Pine@reddit
He's said many times, his goal was to become an "actor" and he used the music and the modeling to break into the movie industry. He had no desire to extend his "music" career beyond where it went.
Kimber80@reddit
He had two hits, lol
HotLava00@reddit
lol but does it count if we don’t really remember the second one?
phun-key@reddit
Career movie star. Actor? Mmmmm…. 🫤
Far_Dragonfly_3748@reddit
I still refer him Marky mark and the funky bunch, entire title
Woodzilla7@reddit
dirtygreysocks@reddit
I just call him "that asshole who didn't get time for his hate crime"
ZebraBorgata@reddit
While I’m aware he’s been called Marky Mark I never had any idea why.
NightingaleNine@reddit
Literally the only way I refer to him, lol.
Exciting_Pass_6344@reddit
💯
Bumberti@reddit
Damn 35 years ago!
LDawnBurges@reddit
I saw him in concert… lol
And, I will STILL jam that song loud af on my car radio, idc.

I think its funny that back when he was Marky Mark , if an interviewer called him Mark Wahlberg he would respond all angrily in a Boston accent "Yo! I'm Marky Mark" Then when he became an actor if interviewers called him Marky Mark he would say calmly in a normal voice "I'm Mark Wahlberg I'm a serious actor"
OGCelaris@reddit
Ya, I wouldn't really use the term "serious" to describe his acting career.
Imaginary_Office1749@reddit
For a little while I thought he was alright. Now I just think he’s a chode.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
He grew older.
I was going to say up but.....
yayayagilliganhell@reddit
Funky bunch
notworkingghost@reddit
Never forget the Funky Bunch. He stood on those guys to become the fairly average actor he is today.
HiddenUser1248@reddit
Can you feel it, baby?
Princessferfs@reddit
I’m so glad I never recorded the silly things I did in my youth.
-CgiBinLaden-@reddit
Yo, don't call him Marky Mark anymore. He don't like it. It hits different now, like a blind Asian man.
hankenator1@reddit
Hits different like hitting an Asian man with a 5 foot stick knocking him out and yelling racial slurs. Or like chasing black 4th graders yelling racial slurs and throwing rocks at them.
Gen X Bostonians remember the real marky mark. The one charged with attempted murder but plead guilty to felony assault, the one who was sentenced to 2 years in prison but only served 45 days.
Trolkarlen@reddit
Mahky Mahk
BMisterGenX@reddit
Fun Fact. The Funky Bunch were the only African Americans in Southie
Dropi@reddit
You mean that guy who can do 40 strickt pullups? hes amazing right....?
RemyJe@reddit
My wife and 20yo just had this conversation, this past weekend!
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
We had Walhburgers for dinner last night. I tend to plummet down the rabbit hole giving them citations and context they don’t want.
Then we watched the video. 😁
BMisterGenX@reddit
Such a good citation.
easyPandthenutsackrs@reddit
NKOTb just called, spoke with Ace, they are looking for a back up dancer.

Street_Barracuda1657@reddit
Should have dropped the Calvin ad on him too. Say hello to your mother for me…
disharmony-hellride@reddit
I brought marky mark up to some 20 year olds and they had NO idea he was Marky Mark. We looked the video up on Youtube and I think they'll never be the same.
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
“Oh….that guy from Ted?”
Dark-Wolf-Angel@reddit
Saw them in Houston when I was 18. And yes it is amazing how young people have zero idea he existed in this way.
likeyournamebutworse@reddit
This is how we used to make the party start.
actualelainebenes@reddit
It’s such a GOOD vibration
VeterinarianMean3258@reddit
NEVER FORGET
Historical_Drink_350@reddit
NOW! Its about that time!
freddieguts@reddit
He will always be Marky Mark to me. Every time I see him, I automatically hear Good Vibrations and chuckle...
Oh and the others that tried to mature by changing their names will always be.. Ricky Schroeder, Tiffani Amber Thiessen, Chachi..etc..
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
Puff Daddy …
tampaforfun@reddit
I will always call him that. It's like Vanilla ice or Eminem.
CommaGirl@reddit
Does Eminem go by a new name now?

People forget that his brother is a boy-band elder statesman too.
thelonghauls@reddit
That guy totally missed a goldmine by not launching a breakfast cereal called “Marky Mark’s Funky Bunches of Oats.”
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit
My music tastes may have changed over the years but that is still grating to my ears.
sporkachoon@reddit
