Are pajamas and nightgowns still commonly worn by adults in America to sleep at night?

I apologize if my question sounds silly.
When I mention pajamas and nightgowns, it's like those worn by the characters Darrin Stephens and Samantha Stephens to bed in the 1960s TV series Bewitched.

Are pajamas and nightgowns still commonly worn by adults in America to sleep at night? Or have these become outdated bedwears of the past in America?
yellowrose04@reddit
Not usually. Most people just wear a shirt and shorts. Sports bra and shorts. Maybe pj pants and a shirt if it’s cold.
moonchic333@reddit
Sleeping in a sports bra sounds like a nightmare.
basicbagbitch@reddit
Humans have different preferences.
yellowrose04@reddit
That’s what I do and what I’ve seen a lot of people do. I’ve got big boobs so….
thisispatrickmc@reddit
I think those were mostly in old shows because they were limited by what they could show on tv. They might have been popular before heated homes were common.
Sabertooth767@reddit
Some of the old censorship rules (not always laws) are hilarious. Used to be you couldn't show that a married couple sleeps in the same bed.
MissFabulina@reddit
And you couldn't show them in bed together unless the man kept one foot on the floor!
Fae-SailorStupider@reddit
Also, no sex, only a slap to the face to imply it
robboppotamus@reddit
'murica.
pseudonym7083@reddit
I'm pretty sure mine would pass early television standards. Just a t-shirt and fleece pants, I don't even walk around barefoot anymore since the new house is spider city.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
Tank top and pj pants or shorts for me. Mother of 4 and i definitely did not sleep nakid.
UrgentLiving@reddit
Matching pajamas, yes
jessek@reddit
TV is not reality.
sneezhousing@reddit
For men those sets for sure it's outdated.
Darkdragoon324@reddit
I pretty much just wear an oversized t-shirt and underwear.
I keep shoes and pants next to me in case I need to leave suddenly in the middle of the night though. I've always had an irrational fear of an earthquake happening. Not that i'll be trapped, but that I'll be forced to evacuate half naked.
ParryLimeade@reddit
Women yes, men no
Im_Not_Nick_Fisher@reddit
As someone who lives a few miles from where this show was supposed to take place I can tell you that they wouldn’t be dressed like this if it wasn’t on TV. My house was built in ‘57 and didn’t have central Air conditioning. If this truly was in Florida and they didn’t have AC, they wouldn’t even have that cover on them. It’s normal for the temperature to be in the low to mid 80s at night.
moonchic333@reddit
It seems men generally do not wear pajamas sets. They mostly sleep in boxers, undershirts, and maybe those boxer sleep pants things if it’s colder. Women can go either way some just wear underwear and t-shirts, and some wear pajama sets or nightgowns. I went from underwear and old tshirts to wearing real pajamas and I kick myself for not getting into pajama sets sooner. They are truly superior because the materials used are much more soft and breathable. Far superior than an old stiff cotton shirt.
scipio79@reddit
I was born and raised in the upper Midwest region of the USA and I wear a t-shirt and pants to bed. The current set is leopard print. So it’s not traditional pajamas but it’s comfortable and breathable.
tres-vip@reddit
I wear short fuzzy shorts and tank tops when it's summertime, or long sleeved cotton shirts and long fuzzy pajamas pants during the wintertime.
LeSkootch@reddit
Older folks, yes. My Boomer parents wear pajamas and robes regularly as an example. I just free ball gym shorts and a t-shirt.
Arubesh2048@reddit
I almost never wear anything more than my underwear to bed. I find pajamas to be too constricting, they get tangled around me and then I’m actively uncomfortable. I rarely sleep naked, but the only time I’ll wear actual pajamas is if it’s going to be super cold outside and I’m not sure my heater can keep up.
booknookcook@reddit
Most of my nightgowns are kind of like t-shirts. I prefer a stretchy tank top. I have a few pajama top and bottom sets that are kind of like stretchy loungewear material for use during the holidays. My partner does have some pajamas like Darren but they're only used for specific situations such as hospital stays.
daffodil0127@reddit
My mom (80) still wears nightgowns but I don’t know anyone else who does. I mostly wear Tshirt and shorts or leggings.
NaturGirl@reddit
I wear at least PJ pants or shorts and a normal old comfy t-shirt. My teen daughter wears long nightshirts.
Providence_Sparrow@reddit
Same! Most nights I go for an oversized tshirt and pj pants/shorts (or a pair of boxers). Though I do have a few matching pajama sets that I like to wear when I want to pretend that I have my life together.
Ill-Box-6543@reddit
I’ve always slept in just my underwear unless I was at someone else’s house. Grew up that way. We didn’t have pajamas.
lifeisfascinatingly_@reddit
I wear matching sets of pajamas and nightgowns. I love them.
Empty-Cycle2731@reddit
Nightgowns not so much, except by very old people.
Matching pajamas are definitely still a thing though. I wouldn't say most people wear them, but they're common enough to where you can buy them at most clothing stores.
DPax_23@reddit
I wear flannel pajamas in the winter.
wifespissed@reddit
Boxers
ParrotheadTink@reddit
Nope. Underwear only. I have nightgowns I wear in the mornings and evenings, but I can’t sleep in them. Too constricting.
TherapyMutt@reddit
A few family members had them growing up in the oughts but definitely the older people, and most often in winter.
liesaboutkiwis@reddit
Past the age of ten or so, I have never worn pajamas or nightgowns, and as an adult, I have never dated anyone who wore them either.
Obviously a non-random sample, but I would say no.
jacowab@reddit
Kind of, they are something you wear as a kid and then eventually stop wearing, then on day your in your mid 30's and suddenly decide to get a really nice pair of pajamas and you wonder why you ever stopped wearing them
wieldymouse@reddit
I know someone that wears PJs like this as an adult, but that's the only person I know that sleeps like this. I hate being hot and feeling like I am confined by clothes or blankets; so, I tend to wear very little.
anonymouse278@reddit
You can still buy them readily- matching pajamas are even a popular holiday tradition for some families. But definitely not universal. Probably most common for kids.
As a parent, I wear pajamas because there's a solid likelihood I will have to get up in the night to attend to something. Some of my pajamas are matched sets, others are just pajama pants with a t-shirt that has been downgraded from "outside the house clothes" status.
I somehow doubt this is a US-specific thing.
Psychological-Joke22@reddit
my pajama collection is almost as fun as my shoe collection! So yes I wear pajamas like that to bed
stroppo@reddit
The last person I knew who wore a nightgown was my mother. The rest of us make do w/a t-shirt and underwear.
tcrhs@reddit
Some people do, some people don’t.
FadingOptimist-25@reddit
I have no rhyme or reason to what I wear or don’t wear to bed (Gen X). Sometimes nothing, sometimes night shirt, sometimes just underwear.
Life_Lawfulness8825@reddit
What the…….weird question but I guess if you’re curious about it. Yes, I wear pajamas as an adult and so do my adult children. Girls wear short sleeping gowns and my son wears sleep shorts.
fragrant_flare7260@reddit
I’ve always worn nightgown or pajamas to sleep in. They are commonly sold in every large clothing store, and there are also numerous shops selling specialty nightwear (such as sexy lingerie). However, whatever was worn in 1960 would probably seem outdated now, since nightwear has fashions that change just as day clothes do.
Lilac722@reddit
I wear matching pajamas and nightgowns to sleep and I’m 31
Paperwife2@reddit
I’m 50f and same.
filkerdave@reddit
I'm 64 and I haven't worn anything to sleep in since I was 13 (unless I'm visiting someone else's home and don't have a private room).
alwaysboopthesnoot@reddit
In our house we only wear things like that at holiday time (ie; matching PJs for everyone in the family, for family photos, as we’re opening gifts). Otherwise, it’s everyday robes over tanks or tees and shorts/leggings, or no robe and just sportswear when no one else is visiting. Depending on the season it can be robes and nothing worn underneath if it’s hot, robes worn over sweatpants and henleys with slippers on, if it’s cold, etc.
ZealousidealFee927@reddit
By women more often than men. I think men usually sleep bare chested.
easy_Money@reddit
I pretty much exclusively wear gym shorts to bed
Quix66@reddit
I wear huge t-shirts or short nightgowns to bed.
I lounge in pajamas but I hate bands around my waist to sleep so I don’t wear pants or shorts to bed.
Jcamp9000@reddit
I love my pajamas. I have more Pjs than t shirts
o93mink@reddit
My wife wears a silk slip nightgown dress thing every night to bed. She says it’s comfortable but it’s also sexy as hell.
I wear boxers.
Ok_Entertainment9665@reddit
I will wear a long sleep shirt until bed, then it’s naked time
WhereTheSkyBegan@reddit
I just wear underpants and a t-shirt for summer, but when it gets really cold in the winter, I wear fuzzy pajamas so I don't freeze in my sleep.
dohlparts@reddit
I wear either a soft pajama set or pajama pants/shorts and a big, comfy “around the house” shirt. I can’t do nightgowns personally because I hate when they ride up while I sleep. My husband sleeps in boxers and a shirt/sometimes no shirt.
Prestigious-Dog-2150@reddit
That was 60 years ago, and even then, it had to be that way because of censorship laws. My dad always slept in his underwear. I think my mother wore a nightgown. I've always slept nude or in my underwear. At the university, all my roommates and I slept in our underwear. I imagine the girls slept in nightgowns, but ones made of some kind of silky, light material.
United_Gift3028@reddit
Not since school days.
Biteme75@reddit
I have some pajama shorts, which I wear with whatever tank top is most convenient.
Legitimate_Koala_37@reddit
As a man, I would say that’s too many buttons to have to deal with before bed and in the morning. I wear t shirts or sweatshirts
ginger_princess2009@reddit
My husband wears gym shorts to bed (no shirt) and I wear moomoos because I hate anything on my legs
Artartbobart1@reddit
Wife and I only sleep in underwear.
TrashCanEnigma@reddit
I don't typically wear a set of pajamas but I'll occasionally wear a nightgown. Most of the time, though, it's just sweatpants and a t-shirt if anything.
dausy@reddit
I got coincidentally just got a TikTok of ladies finding these types of retro night gowns at department stores in the mall and being excited about it.
Maybe it's going to become a new trend.
DebiBern@reddit
I love my Victoria secret matching pajamas!
ArdentlyArduous@reddit
If I’m not at home, yes. Like if I go on vacation and share a house with my parents, I wear real pajamas. Shorts and short sleeves, because Texas. At home, I’m wearing one of my husbands tee shirts at most. Usually I come to bed without getting dressed after showering.
Sabertooth767@reddit
I have some loungewear if I'm staying at someone's house or something, otherwise I just sleep naked
Delicious_Degree6749@reddit
Probably not that common, I think most would just be in underwear or nude.
Duque_de_Osuna@reddit
I don’t wear them. My 3 year old daughter does.
False-Cookie3379@reddit
I can’t speak for everyone, but i have a few sleep dresses like she wears. Cotton and comfy in the summer, my husband wouldn’t ever wear those pjs that’s shown in the photo.
Evapoman97@reddit
My wife wears pajamas to bed, sometimes a nightgown. I have never slept in anything except chonies!
Ravenclaw79@reddit
Sure. I mean, some people sleep in just their underwear, but it’s totally normal to wear pajamas
DearDrummer87@reddit
By this adult? No. I have some that I’ll wear if other people will be around or an old, oversized hoodie for when it’s cold.
SweetandSourCaroline@reddit
I love my matching 100% cotton pj sets from the Gap
manicpixidreamgirl04@reddit
That style is outdated, but people do still wear pajamas.
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit
My mom (80s) has just started wearing tees and loose pants to sleep in. Outside of my house (or if it’s super cold), I sleep in old lady nightgowns or PJs. (Super soft flannel) at home I sleep in the nude
stacey1771@reddit
I wear non matching pajamas and im GenX
Roboticpoultry@reddit
My wife has some silk pajamas, I usually just sleep in underwear and a t-shirt
anneofgraygardens@reddit
Those look a bit old-fashioned, yeah. I think it's most common to sleep in pajama pants/shorts with an old T-shirt, or naked. But this isn't something I hear people discussing often, so maybe I'm wrong.
Longjumping-Oil-7419@reddit
I doubt anyone wears that born after 1940
GSilky@reddit
My partner insists I wear sleepy pants, otherwise I would be naked.
