I hate weddings. Expensive, exhausting, you get fed too late, the whole event is about the photos, and you have to make polite conversation with lots of people you don't know.

Is it OK to refer to women as girls in the UK?

Posted by Fun-Injury9266@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 869 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

Absolutely. If I, as an old man, refer to a younger colleague as a girl then that sounds patronising and diminishing their value as a professional. 'Boy' has a quite different connotation because it's more laddish and in a patriarchal society lads are given more licence than girls.

What do people really think?

Posted by Open-Tip6407@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 30 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

That's really shocking and I'm really sorry to hear it. And if you were to receive disability benefits that would be fine. Unfortunately it only takes a few people to create a really nasty atmosphere, and the public has been groomed over many years by the right wing press to look down on anybody getting state help. I would hope that a majority are compassionate, empathetic and polite.

Have you ever donated to The Guardian and why?

Posted by juno-xwani@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 64 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

I subscribe, because it is the one and only non-right-wing national (broadsheet) newspaper in the UK, and a vital source of corrective balance against the rest of the media. And apart from the Daily Express, every other UK paper has a wealthy foreign or non-dom owner. I look at the Guardian every day, so it makes moral sense to pay for it.

I hated it back in the 80s. Pointless humiliation. From what my sons said it's got a bit better. But you can't make a fitter nation through PE. Cut car use. It's the only way. But that means tackling the right wing press.

Amazon received government tax breaks (under the Tories) and pays almost no tax. In return we get unpleasant warehouse jobs, boarded up shops, fleets of vans rushing around, piles of dodgy junk cluttering our lives, and excellent businesses forced under, while vast profits disappear overseas. How does any of this benefit the UK?

Does a cyclist have right of way through a crowd?

Posted by Soomroz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 79 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

Unfortunately because drivers abuse cyclists, [some] cyclists like to act the victim and believe they can never be wrong. As a pedestrian in London I don't fear motorists because vehicles are predictable and stick to the road. Bikes come at you from any direction, on road or pavement, through red light or green.

This is surely the result of privatisation and competition. Multiple firms are chasing the lucrative parcels market, and the loss-making letters part is left with Royal Mail. None of this has benefited us, the customer, and we also now have multiple delivery vans racing around trying to meet impossible targets and deadlines because margins are so tight. Absurdity.

Does it irritate you when parents let their children put their shoes on the chair?

Posted by petrastales@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 65 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

This is completely true. Some children are just very difficult. We have two: one was straightforward and the other very much isn't. (Both behaved well in public though.) It's far too easy to judge from the outside without any empathy or experience. BUT: I'd still expect a parent to apologise to a cafe if they've made a mess, and to tip well.

Top tea recommendation for a yank?

Posted by Loud-Sort4819@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 129 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

I'd say almost every cuppa in Britain is made with a teabag. We use a teapot at home but at work I just stuck it in a mug and pour the boiling water. Of the big brands Yorkshire Gold is fantastic (made by Taylor's of Harrogate). The supermarket brands and all the PG Tips and Tetley are okay but nothing special. I think Typhoo isn't great. I've really like the Clipper brand. Nobody drinks Lipton's, which is so popular abroad. My big take though: Twinings is vastly overpriced and overrated. Likewise Fortnum & Mason. Their Russian Caravan was tasteless.

The inclusion of Doncaster is surprising. The town centre is a struggling hollow shell of empty units and vape shops. Even M&S moved out. So maybe overall the city is okay because of out of town developments but that just highlights the problem with UK cities.

Why is Keir Starmer so hated in the UK and why is he being "forced" to resign?

Posted by Jengen_53@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 326 comments

veryordinarybloke@reddit

2 reasons: he has tried to appeal to right wing voters, to neutralise the right wing parties, which has upset the left who thought they'd voted for a left wing government; and the majority of our press is right wing billionaire owned, plus all the billionaire-owned social media, and all of that has violently attacked Starmer from before he got elected, some of it with absolute lies. Starmer was naive to think that he could ever appeal to the right wing vote: that media would never give him a fair hearing. And Starmer was naive and blind on Mandelson. It wasn't a terrible idea to have him as ambassador given Trump's inclinations, but Starmer should have been much more cautious given Mandelson's known associations with Epstein. Having said that, nobody in the Tories or Reform opposed his appointment.
