It’s the nicest day of the year so far. What noisy things are your neighbours up to?

I have been subjected to the noise of eight hours of jet washing so far - oh joy! Even with the windows shut, the vibration permeates throughout the house and the noise is a horrible high pitched squeal. I work from home so can’t just get up and go for a walk either.
JangleberryJoe@reddit
I’ve just cut the grass before the rain comes back. So I guess I’m that neighbour today
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I don’t mind the noise of grass being cut at all. It’s the jet washing noise for literally hours and hours that does my head in.
Lightworker_2024@reddit
Are you mad?? Lawnmowers are the MOST peace disturbing noise ever.
Airurando-jin@reddit
I have a push mower .. super quiet
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Oh I have one of those too and I trim hedges with shears. Also like to use my little handsaw for chopping branches.
Airurando-jin@reddit
I find it great for keeping fit. I do the same thing , just shears.
I’ve also gotten tired of issues with electrical equipment.
The push mower (fiskars) is weighty and can be easily fixed, same with shears etc
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
The push mower is definitely a work out!
Alarming_Matter@reddit
Leaf blowers would like a chat.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Especially the petrol powered ones!
I just don’t get leaf blowers at all really - I’ve seen pro ‘gardeners’ blow leaves into the street from houses they’ve been working on.
Bright_Arm8782@reddit
Mowing season in a place with fancy lawns front and back.
It just Does! Not! Stop!
PatchcordAdams@reddit
I just moved to lawnsville from the grimey inner city where people would burn their waste in their ‘gardens’ on a warm day.
The sound of lawn mowers is pure heaven to me.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I think it’s the pitch of the noise that really hurts my ears. A bit like one of those supposedly undetectable to the human ear cat scarers!
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
It's the drone and squeal all in one, isn't it?
msma46@reddit
Leaf-blowers are worse
turbospeedweasel@reddit
A decent quality electric mower isn’t too obtrusive, a two stroke petrol mower however isn’t much fun to listen to
Lightworker_2024@reddit
I think most people have cheap ones near me. It sounds awful.
JamOverCream@reddit
Agree. I love the sound of a petrol mower on a warm evening.
Today we are mostly listening to a very loud blackbird who has taken up residence about 2 feet from my office window, and a thruple of pheasants, the male of which is a very noisy bugger.
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
I'm waiting for the red kites to come back. Their whistling is something else.
glytxh@reddit
It’s all fair game outside of Sundays.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
And of course today is overcast, dry and cool but there is no powerwashing going on… or any other power tool noise!
ChelseaMourning@reddit
My neighbour is renovating their garden without employing a contractor, which involves them digging new trenches for utilities to the out house at the bottom of the garden. Yesterday I came home after a day of working in the construction industry, thought I’d open the patio door from my living room to garden to enjoy the weather on my first child free night in 2.5 months (I’m a single mum with full custody) to find that they were drilling into the ground at 7pm. It’s all weekend too, but last night was the closest I’ve got to kicking off about it.
OkTechnician4610@reddit
Strimming & neighbours dogs yapping all beeping day.
Accomplished-Ad3585@reddit
Chilled morning currently, but I'm planning to get my shitty leaf blower & mulcher out later to decimate some garden waste that probably shouldn't go up it for my compost heap.
It already makes a horrible noise, I'm sure a few more hunks of gravel and brambles will do it the world of good. I'm sure the neighbours will love it!
wafflespuppy@reddit
I live in a terrace and none of my neighbours have children so bar a lawnmower and the usual road noise it has been bliss
Fuzzy_Cantaloupe6353@reddit
Didn't even have to look at the sub Reddit name to know this was British 😂😂😂
Oddly all the neighbours are nice and chill today
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Lucky you - enjoy the birdsong and peace!
Fuzzy_Cantaloupe6353@reddit
To be fair it's weekends that suck here love having weekdays off!!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
If it was a weekend I’d be off somewhere else!
trigodo@reddit
If it was weekend and your neighbour would clean his patio you would scream how dare he as its weekend. Stop complaining 🤦♂️
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Surely people must realise how antisocial power washing is (for hours and hours) on the first actual warm sunny day we’ve had after a long winter.
GroupCurious5679@reddit
Don't know why you're getting downvotes, you're making a perfectly valid point. Our neighbours on both sides are obsessed with power washing for hours on end, every other day. In our previous house the neighbour was obsessed with his ride on mower. You just can't get away from noisy people nowadays unless you're loaded and able to buy a place far away from everyone. I used to live in Germany, where they had really useful laws to prevent excessive noise at certain times. It was quite nice.
Fuzzy_Cantaloupe6353@reddit
Sadly with kids weekends at home are a rare treat anyway 😂😂
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Yeah - remember those days!
JennyW93@reddit
I’ve had nosey rather than noisy. My neighbour across the road came over to tell me it’s about time I got the front garden sorted (in the middle of day 2 of my 2-day backbreaking gardening sprint).
It’s literally the first chance I’ve had a nice day to sort it, and I booked last-minute annual leave especially. Bore off, Henry!
jen_is@reddit
I've got one who does that whenever I'm finally doing it, but the thing is I put it off because I don't like the comments when I'm trying to garden, so he is actually making it worse!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I would be doing No Mow May, June and July just to piss them off!
RoleMysterious8756@reddit
My neighbour decided that Easter Sunday would be an ideal day to power wash his fence, he’s normally fairly considerate. I guess it was that or spend time with his wife.
Pale_Jackfruit_941@reddit
Drinking there daily 24 cans of carlsberg and shouting at the son and cat. Just outside instead.
greengrayclouds@reddit
Why are you lots all at home so often
CraigL8@reddit
Someone had a machine saw or angle grinder on the go for a longggg time. It’s like they can only be used when the sun is in the sky and it is 15 degrees plus.
Head_Hacker@reddit
Already I can hear The Ballad of the Garden Goblin
Ah yes. Her.
The woman who single-handedly convinced the entire neighbourhood that noise pollution is actually a personality trait.
There she is, cackling away before the sun’s even thought about going to bed. Somewhere between a hyena and a faulty car alarm, her laugh has colonised every garden within a half-mile radius like an invasive species nobody asked for.
The moment that sun is out, out comes the voice. That fucking voice. Forged somewhere deep in the EastEnders writers’ room, apparently. You’d think she was trying to be heard by the producers. She’s not acting. She just lives like that.
“OH MY GAAAWD.” Yes love, we know. We ALL know. The entire postcode knows. The international space station has filed a noise complaint.
“NO I AIN’T!” Spoiler: she is. She absolutely is. Whatever it is. She is.
By 11pm she’s three proseccos deep and the volume dial has snapped clean off. By midnight she’s reached frequencies only dogs and suffering neighbours can detect. By 1am she’s essentially a human air raid siren in a Primark maxi dress.
You know the sort… The Karen cut. Dirty blonde, aggressively maintained, radiating the energy of someone who has definitely asked to speak to the manager of a Wetherspoons.
She probably drives a white Evoque or a Juke, depending on which morning she wakes up and chooses chaos, and she parks with the confidence of someone who genuinely believes the highway code was written by people with less important places to be.
She is, in short, a force of nature.
An unwanted one. Like a thunderstorm at a barbecue.
Bless her.
Wino3416@reddit
“Aggressively maintained” is poetry. I saw one the other day. Purple RR Sport, head to toe sportswear that’s like a blanket (I’m sure there’s a name for it), THAT makeup, the hair, and always, ALWAYS, the surprised/angry look. Constantly on the lookout for something to judge, be bothered about, never ever letting the facade down. It must be EXHAUSTING. What does it achieve?
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Blimey - you have just described one of my neighbours!
Head_Hacker@reddit
You’ve all had the misfortune of being near one!
markusparkus75@reddit
Playing a shit local commercial radio golden oldies station loudly in their garden. No, I do not feel easy like Sunday morning you fucks.
OwlDust@reddit
One of my immediate neighbours has a large dog that barks if a blade of grass moves, and a few doors down in both directions I have families with kids who shriek constantly. Not exactly tranquil.
Pen_dragons_pizza@reddit
Chav gathering of several generations.
Kids, parents and grandparents, no one works and no one gives a shit about people’s property or noise pollution.
I just heard a kid say ‘nanny’ and a woman reply with ‘I am not your fucking nanny’, to what sounded like a young child.
Vile people
3speechnotallowed@reddit
In my last house, my chav neighbours used to teach their kids swear words and then laugh along. Makes me sick.

A tale as old as time.... (For them)
TheBigJorkowski@reddit
My neighbour shouts at her son with learning disabilities for hours on end every day. It's honestly soul destroying to listen to
-Not-Today-Satan@reddit
We have a guy who insists on singing with his acoustic guitar any time the weather gets nice. He’s not a bad singer, but after the first 500 times it’s a bit wearing. I’ve been chuckling to myself as one by one neighbours start mowing lawns, power washing etc forcing him to stop. It has to be silence when he “performs” you see.
WrongExplanation1065@reddit
As long as he doesn't play here comes the sun
No-Weakness-8063@reddit
New neighbours completely destroyed old beautiful garden and concreted over every living thing. Now spend ever waking hour from 7 - 10 jet washing it. They are cunts.
WrongExplanation1065@reddit
They will wear it away soon enough
that2017vibe@reddit
It's such a lottery when new neighbours move in. I'm dreading our old quiet neighbour leaving earth.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
This is exactly what they did next door…
cockatilla87@reddit
Perfect day to hang the washing out...... an hour later smell burning (the neighbours always burn whatever they fancy burning and always on a nice day) frantically bring the washing in and shut all the windows 😭.

My neighbour is on his third day of jetwashing a drive that is three car lengths long and one car length wide. Another neighbour says he started at the bottom and is working backwards, meaning he's always washing dirt onto what he's just done. He's washed so hard that the sand on which the bricks were laid is coming up between the bricks, so he keeps on washing...
kernowjim@reddit
I'm in Cornwall, not far from long stretch of A road, it has sounded like a round of World Superbike racing all day
That-Chain-5139@reddit

PerfectPeaPlant@reddit
The neighbours had tree surgeons in today to behead seven or eight massive fir trees so…chainsaws and a wood chipper. As a result I’ve got a banging headache 😒
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Oh no - it’s a horrible noise isn’t it.
PerfectPeaPlant@reddit
Particularly shitty for me because I’m especially sensitive to sound due to autism so tbh, it’s tantamount to auditory torture. Thank god I have noise blocking headphones!
jimmywhereareya@reddit
Sounds like they've got that job done. Hopefully peace will reign tomorrow when it will be a lot cooler
Nomis1982@reddit
They have a 5 year old kid that screams and shouts like a 3 year old. They are not bad people but they are fucking annoying. No concept of noise. No concept of noise travelling. Doors slamming, banging on walls, random screaming and shouting. Can't wait for them to move. Luckily in the summer if I go outside and start doing work in the garden they fuck off indoors. He hates noise but creates so much of it.
JenksbritMKII@reddit
I'm afraid that's us. Except we have a 3 year old and a 6 year old who are loud as fuck. The 6 year old is being assessed for a number of things, but both kids have figured out they can squabble and fight with eachother. We are constantly telling them to be quiet and I'm constantly torn between letting them be kids and not wanting to bother our single, youngish neighbour - who must absolutely fucking hate us.
Blam Liz truss though. We had an offer accepted on a lovely 3 bed detached and were due to have our mortgage application meeting with Halifax in a week - then Liz truss obliterated mortgage rates in the space of that week and we had to pull out and significantly reduce our budget to stay in the same village with the schools we wanted. If I had know how paper thin the walls are I probably wouldn't have bought this house but it was 100% a panic but after that fucking bitch crashed mortgage rates.
Nomis1982@reddit
Mate it sounds like you're very aware of the noise. These guys next door to us aren't. There's only one kid and I do think he may be on the spectrum some what as he's just so loud, speech is really poorly developed for a 5 year old and he just wanders round pointing at stuff and shouting. There's such a fine line between letting kids be kids and actually having a bit of awareness. Btw I have a 6 year old. Fine letting him be a bit raucous sometimes but I will immediately tell him if I think he's getting too loud. Our neighbours don't do that.
JenksbritMKII@reddit
Nah completely understand. I just live in a constant state of guilt about it.
SeahorseQueen1985@reddit
Please don't feel guilt. Please do have a chat if you can & mention briefly about your kids being assessed & you're aware they can be loud at times & I reckon you'll be all good. People know kids are noisy as it is. Anyone sitting in a garden surrounded by other houses isn't complaining about kids playing, honestly. It's really really normal. Only proper grumps get annoyed but let them. Kids are noisy full stop, whether on the spectrum or not. You have every right for your kids to be out making noise. People don't own the air/sound barriers. Dont feel guilt constantly. Kids are noisy as it is & that's OK. You live in a neighbourhood with kids. Try to relax about it.
Nomis1982@reddit
I reckon if you spoke to them about it there would be no issues. Genuinely all we want is some awareness from next door of the noise they create. They're not bad people but they're just clueless. Even my other half, who is usually the first to tell me I'm too angry about stuff, has had enough of them. Luckily their house is sold STC, just crossing fingers the new lot aren't worse.
Alarming_Matter@reddit
Just wait until the paddling pool comes out. That seems to turn all the kids around us into banshees.
Physical-Industry-21@reddit
I'm actually going to be that neighbour in a couple of weeks when I get a new power washer. It's a task I'm not particularly looking forward to, but needs must.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Just pick a gloomy day when people don’t want to be in their gardens getting some rest.
Physical-Industry-21@reddit
I live in the middle of a council estate and hear stuff like this all the time so I'm not overly worried about giving some back. Also, I can't be choosy about weather or day, I've a very busy weekday job so it's got to be done on a weekend. It'll be fine.

Yes, that's the only logical conclusion to the level of stamping. It's like she's on stumps.

Not really bothered about noisy things like power washing or DIY as I’d rather my neighbours took care of their properties and kept things clean. What does bother me though is the neighbour that’s decided to burn a load of garden waste and cardboard while I’ve had my washing on the line for the first time this year. All now stinks of smoke so going to have to run it all through the washing machine again. The problem with this country is that the weather is so unpredictable. We will get one or two days of beautiful weather and then 2 weeks of pissing down rain, so you have to take advantage. Guy has been cutting his small lawn for 3 hours.
v2marshall@reddit
Being In the office with no chance to work from home. I would love to just have the issue of a bit of noise over a 45 minute commute The air conditioning is good though
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I know I’m really lucky and shouldn’t complain.
Used to work in a very noisy office with a 45 minute drive each way.
Reasonable_Dog_8572@reddit
Lawnmower battle, one starts and they all start
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I now have the powerwasher, a strimmer and a lawnmower going…
Illustrious-Divide95@reddit
At least they're doing it on a work day not on a sunny Saturday afternoon!!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I wish it was so I could escape!
DescriptionSignal458@reddit
Bonfires, not noise I know, but why would you have a bonfire on such a lovely day?
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Oh that’s just antisocial!
FunkyYoghurt@reddit
Same. Since about 10am all I've heard is the opposite neighbour jet washing. He stopped at 3pm.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Mine is still going. What’s worse is he keeps stopping for a couple of minutes and then it starts again…
Ok_Try4480@reddit
Its actually very quiet round my way, birdsong and the odd kid playing out. Neighbours obviously sober today haha
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
All the kids are out on the street.... I had kids thstvare grown up now so I dont begrudge it but yeah they are pretty noisy !
DreamingofBouncer@reddit
Sorry some of the jet washing was me, just doing the cars
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Things like that are fine as there’s an end in sight! It’s the endless patio power washing that is truly awful.
buginarugsnug@reddit
I was going to my parents house every day for two weeks to walk their dog last summer (unfortunate injury timings!) and on the route there, there was a man who was jet washing his drive every single time I walked past. I was beginning to wonder if we were in a simulation.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
I walk past a house frequently where the bloke always appears to be washing his caravan.
Noctemme@reddit
Stuck at work where there aren’t any windows
CouchAlchemist@reddit
My neighbours have been lovely. Nice and quiet but I had to power wash for 2 hours. Even I hated it but it's got to be done. These things are loud.
Last-Deal-4251@reddit
My neighbour has a generator and a pneumatic drill and is drilling out the concrete holding his fence posts up as he’s having a new fence installed. They’ve been going since 11am
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Yikes…
Perception_4992@reddit
Sanding his boat with an electric sander.
Lyrakish@reddit
I have to apologise that I was that noisy neighbour today. Had a load of trees taken down in the garden as they were dying off/unhealthy. It only took a few hours and I hope everyone gets to enjoy their gardens come dinnertime without any further kerfuffle.
kylehyde84@reddit
I've just got my car out. That's quite noisy. Off for a spirited country drive
tragic1994@reddit
No idea what hes doing but banging around the house while swearing 😂
veryordinarybloke@reddit
This is the summer curse, isn't it! Warm sunny weather + techno, screaming kids, power tools. Roll on winter...
thecheesycheeselover@reddit
The local kids spend every possible minute outside playing noisily whenever the weather’s tolerable, so that.
I can’t even be annoyed, although the sound’s often annoying. I’m happy for them, that they all get to play outside and be creative together rather than being stuck indoors on screens.
EmFan1999@reddit
I thought this morning they were having the grandkids over with a paddling pool… but nope!
All I can hear is their pond fountain, the birds (and unfortunately some traffic). It’s bliss
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
See that would be me - I’d have the door wide open with the noise of the pond and the birds.
Kim_catiko@reddit
Nothing so far, but the day is young. Thankfully, no smell of weed yet.
Firthy2002@reddit
Surprisingly the neighbour who likes to tinker with his many vehicles must have worn himself out doing it yesterday so the cul-de-sac is nice and peaceful.
TheShakyHandsMan@reddit
Next doors kids have taken a karaoke machine outside. They seem to be around 8/9 years old. You can guess how bad it is.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
That was yesterday where I live.
I live next to a marina so it's mainly folk playing with or working on their expensive toys
Admirable-Garden189@reddit
I have been noisy over the bank holiday weekend Cutting lots of wood in the garden and upgrading my workshop. All my neighbours are retired so screw them they have 5 days a week of peace and quiet.
Lanternsandstars@reddit
I'm that horrible neighbour who is getting a garage built, which is pretty noisy work... sorry to everyone on my street
Sad-Wrap6555@reddit
the most unearthly blood curdling screams, and the top of a trampoline net violently moving about above the fenceline, at 7.20am
Thought a seagull had ventured inside the net and was either stuck and panicking or getting tackled by one of the local cats
turned out was young lad from thru the back out having a temper tantrum cos school is still off (i think he 'values his usual routine')
PrestigiousFlight974@reddit
Had the lovely kids from next door peering over the fence and chatting my ears off. 😊😊
molluscstar@reddit
We back onto the railway and they’re chainsawing trees and then putting them in a wood chipper!
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Oh no! My second worst noise is chain sawing…
BG3restart@reddit
There's been a little bit of DIY type noise, but it's the school holidays so I guess parents have taken a few extra days off. It hasn't stopped me sitting in the garden in my shorts doing my crochet.
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
Building work going on next door, but they've been pretty reasonable and courteous tbh.
No-Daikon3645@reddit
All my neighbours took their kids to the beach. It's been bliss.
Quiet-Rabbit-524@reddit
It’s me, I’m the neighbour sat in the garden swearing at my laptop
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Might join you!
Fairtogood@reddit
Builders shouting as they unloaded the lorries- 4 times. I’m not counting - but 4 times.
Jimmy_Maximum@reddit
Not neighbours, but we're having the signs replaced on our headquarters, and we have automatically controlled windows which I have no way of shutting. So far they've spent all day on one sign, which just happens to be on the wall next to me. I LOVE coming into the office, it's my favourite!
Jimmy_Maximum@reddit
I am aware that this is very much an off topic rant but I couldn't help myself, soz
Glittering_Vast938@reddit (OP)
Ah it’s the worst when you are expected to work in a noisy office.
GarethGazzGravey@reddit
Both of my immediate next door neighbours have been doing some DIY, which is a nice change from the eerie quietness I experience from my neck of the woods.
crgoodw@reddit
A seagull (I live on the coast) made it's way into the top attic bedroom of a house at the back of me, via the balcony. Cue the students sobbing and screaming as it destroyed the picnic they'd decided to have on their balcony terrace. All I could hear was "Get it out! GET IT OUT!" as it ventured indoors for more crisps.
RudeHelicopter4662@reddit
Neighbour’s small grandchild wandering around by himself, throwing stuff at the fence, singing a half remembered song chorus and talking to himself about poop and the garden gnome.
Maybe I’m just an old grump but I’d rather listen to wind chimes.
Horror_Reader1973@reddit
Cement mixer all freaking day
CrazyPlatypusLady@reddit
Neighbours have been quiet, but I did get to watch yet another big delivery truck get confused that there's no through road on our cul-de-sac.
As for the town centre, I would like all of the young humans to return to their conformity favourites please..
Elegant_Mind7950@reddit
At least one person on my road has to spend 45 minutes hoovering their car when the suns out.
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
Nothing yet, so far but no doubt the banging tunes will be thrust upon us soon. I really wouldn't mind if the music they listened to was decent, it's just endless thump thump thump.
Beginning-Poet-2991@reddit
Drilling, hammering, cutting things….from my road and the one behind me as well :D
jooniejoon3@reddit
Suspiciously quiet today! Only can hear the screaming kids, but won’t be long until they’re back at school.
rezonansmagnetyczny@reddit
One of mine has never worked. He spends his time arguing with his wife and kids. Come about april he cleans the dog shit up thats built up over winter and moves his antics into the garden.
Currently he's outside shouting abuse and profanities at his youngest kid because he's let her water the garden with the hose pipe, but she's doing it wrong.
Honestly he sounds like a seagul trying to squawk with a sock in it's mouth.
pondribertion@reddit
It's my turn to be the noisy neighbour this week. Having all my windows replaced.
brokenlogic18@reddit
Regrettably I am the noisy one this year - currently having the bathroom renovated.
Apprehensive_Fan7975@reddit
Next door neighbours kid was kicking ball against our shared wall, with constant "Alexa" being souted across the garden to the house, Playing keyboard they cant play after that and now shouting at people on a game thru thier headset as thou they are down the road.
IDKBear25@reddit
They've done absolutely nothing noisy whatsoever so far. It's only 3:14 PM however.
Spiritual_Bet3955@reddit
Neighbours mowing the lawn or strimming the hedge.
GanacheAffectionate@reddit
My downstairs neighbour is on week 3 of completely gutting their flat. Learnt plenty of Slavic swear words whilst trying to do a sudoku in the sun.
Intrepid_Bearz@reddit
Kids party with much shrieking. Luckily, far side of the house with fan on and it all vanishes
Repulsive_Sweet_5308@reddit
I love the sound of all the cans cracking open in gardens 😂 calm down John, it was 11am , we listen and don't judge..... And now work is finished I'll join 😜
