It's not stopped raining for a month, I haven't seen the sun for weeks, the ground is saturated, rivers overflowing, everything is muddy. Are you still enjoying yourselves or secretly looking forward to a bit of sunshine.

I’m in the exact same boat. I LOVE the darker nights and it all seems to have flown by. I don’t mind summer (hate hot sticky nights though and not a fan of it being light till like 10pm) and by August I’m usually pining for autumn. Autumn is my favourite. Wish it was just autumn all year round

I love the British climate overall, and I generally like Winter. But that requires a certain number of crisp, clear days where you can see the sunshine. When it's just grey day after day after day, especially when there still isn't much daylight, it's pretty crap. Also massively limits my dog-walking options when everywhere is like a bog and every day I come back with caked in mud.

This is my take. I love winter, I love the cold and I love being wrapped up but I temper that by saying I love crisp, cold winter. I enjoy the grey rainy days because I find them soothing, **but** I can't be having them for weeks on end. I love the short days and long nights because that's just me, I love the cosiness of going from a nice long walk in the cold or in the grey weather and then stepping into a pub with a fireplace. All I can say at the moment is thank fuck I moved away from Devon last year! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy summer, but I can do without the sticky humidity. I'm very much an autumn and winter kind of person.

But isn't that the case for most weather? Ie we get sick of most conditions if we have it non stop for a few weeks. In summer, even people who love the heat moan about it being too hot after the first month. The balance and variety makes the other conditions more enjoyable - the sun can feel really nice after a period of relentless rain, or a good storm or downpour can feel incredible, clearing the air after a hot and humid spell.

I think people think of winter as the end of autumn. Get loads of those types of day mid October to early November. People forget most of winter is January and February, consistently relentlessly grey and miserable months. I work in the heating industry and with our specialism most of it is outside and our silly season is the run up to Xmas. There’s some shite days here and there and youre stressed and tired and thinking working in this weather is grinding me down. Every single year when I’m moaning about it i forget how gross jan and Feb are. Autumn is BEAUTIFUL. Winter is 12 weeks bunkered up as far as Im concerned.

This is where the names of the months come from but they weren't added on, they just changed the name of months which already existed. January and February were the ones invented. The Roman year used to start on March. They just left a big gap for winter previously because it was irrelevant in terms of farming and war.

Looks more like to me that the later months have the same Indo-European roots as numbers, ie; September- sept=7 October- octo=8 November-nove/nieve=9 December-dix=10. But September is actually the 9th month, which would mean that July and August (Julius Augustus) were inserted afterwards.

Exactly this, I have an ongoing 'difference of opinion' with a friend who absolutely hates Nov/Dec as the days are so short. He loves Jan/Feb because the shortest days are over and cannot understand why I hate them so much. Yes the days are getting longer but what's the point when the weather is always awful? It's cold, wet or both every single day. Some years I include March in my 'winter', the weather can often be horrible then too. Autumn for me is Oct/Nov/Dec and my favourite season.

IIRC "midwinter" and "midsummer" are hangover terms from the days when spring and autumn weren't a thing. Our ancestors based seasons more so on light instead of temperature, so "winter" was basically Oct-Mar, "summer" was Apr-Sep.

It depends entirely where you live though? I live in a particularly sunny area and so we get a lot of those crispy days. The UK climate is different throughout, as much as we like to pretend we're all experiencing the same weather. I like winter, and the crisp and bright days are still present.

Can confirm. I live in Poland where we get lower temps than the UK, but it's a dry crispy cold, so it feels refreshing here , rather than the damp feel that goes through to your bones in the UK. +7c there feels like minus temps here with the damp factored in, then there's the wind too. Also we get less days of thick grey cloud, so you can see a blue sky on cold days. It makes a big difference.

I do, some of my favourite memories have been hiking in the Lake District in February or November, wet, cloudy skies, nature and good exercise before coming back to either have lunch in the pub by a log fire or just going back to my room for a hot shower. I also love just how changeable our weather is, and how dramatic our seasons can be. Lots of places I've been barely change throughout the year, but our country looks and feels vastly different depending on the time of year. I also absolutely cannot stand hot weather. Past 18C I'm struggling.

Heat and sun can make some people feel quite ill, and they start to dread summer, which impacts their mood slowly over time. The rain and greyness of winter is a bit shit, don't get me wrong, but if you wrap up in enough layers it isn't hazardous to health (also, if you can afford to heat your home, which these days isn't a given for everyone, admittedly). The problem with the summer is that you can't avoid the heat. Hardly anyone has aircon here, and if you've taken off your clothes you can't exactly remove more layers to get cool. I actually used to look forward to our summers, but as they've been getting hotter and hotter I'm also starting to dread them. I literally can't function in anything higher than about 28°, and that's now a depressingly common temperature in summer here. I wouldn't say I have SAD or anything like that, but I do feel a bit anxious leading up to heatwaves. I bought a portable aircon for my flat but it barely does anything. I think I'd need to spent upwards of £500 for a properly good one and can't really justify it. I'll just grumble and deal with it.

Oh yeah, I can totally empathise. Diagnosed ADHD, which comes with sensory issues, and last summer I was working in an office where we had no air conditioning and I wasn't allowed to wear shorts, despite the women of the office in dresses/skirts, and us not being client facing. Continuously delayed trains in the heat sucked, and the whole thing was just oppressive and horrible. I'm exactly the same, 25° is my sweet spot, otherwise anything more is a killer. I'm dreading it continuously increasing without improvement as times goes on but, I'm trying not to think about it too much. Thankfully I'm now fully remote, and our house stays quite cool in the summer.

For me personally, I just find summer to be an endurance test, its harder to get relief from other people, heat, light, noise, smells.... just generally being uncomfortable really. Best thing I ever did was buy an air conditioner, at least I can draw the curtains and sit in a cool room now, that helps massively.

Most people do get SAD in winter but it is possible to get it in summer. I get summer SAD too. I dislike bright light in general so not a fan of summer sunshine full stop, I really prefer the dark. Can't put my finger on why, I just do. In the summer the light feels inescapable - bed at 10PM and up at 6AM and some days I don't see any darkness, really makes me very down. I also dislike the warmth, any more than 18 or 19 is getting a bit warm for me, I just prefer being on the cool side and really dislike the sensation of being hot - nothing worse than feeling sticky and sweaty. Both of those things also affect my sleep which is probably the biggest factor in me feeling so miserable as the whole of summer I feel chronically tired and poorly rested. Just has a knock on effect on everything really.

I get it. I'm pretty active so 80% of the time summer is fine but there's always 20% when - usually through tiredness - I find the extra light and noise a little bit much. I'll get more down in summer on those occasions than in winter where I'm just like cool let's relax this evening. For what I hop are obvious reasons, it's a bit harder to relax when it's warmer, louder and busier everywhere. Or to use an analogy, I've always seen summer like having a friend who is extra bubbly. Most of the time they're a great laugh but sometimes you wouldn't mind if they shut up and relaxed a little.

As someone who runs most days, the weather obviously has an impact on that, but I think the weather is often an imagined barrier, rather than an actual one. What I mean by that, is windy, rainy weather might make it harder to step out of the door, or put you off the idea of going out. But once you actually do, it's rarely as bad as you fear it will be. Even being soaked through is not too bad, provided you can dry off and change into fresh clothes after you're done. Generally, running in autumn/winter is much easier than in spring/summer - cooler temperatures are much more pleasant. Going out on a bright winter's day is glorious, and I also enjoy toughing out poor weather to some extent, particularly when the reward is having the park all to myself. Having said all of that, this winter has been tough. There haven't been many bright and sunny days to balance out all the grey and drizzle. Worse than wind, rain, ice or cold is mud, and this year there is a *lot*.

I hate it. I’m normally a “put on a sexy raincoat” kind of gal but I have Raynauds, so my fingers are pretty much constantly numb and painful all at the same time. I looked like a loon in Asda last week because I was struggling to pick things up, despite wearing fingerless gloves with hand warmers in them. Also my dog has curly hair and loves mud and water, so I’m spending most of my days cleaning her and brushing out dried mud to stop her from getting itchy. She’s like a sponge! She’s only just started tolerating wearing a coat, but still gets a filthy belly and legs.

The benefit is here in the Westcountry things are quiet. The roads are sensible (if completely potholed). Traffic generally flows. Caravans aren’t flipping every single weekend trapping us from being able to get out of our towns. Bliss. I’d probably take this over the madness just trying to get everywhere on summer weekends.

I do not have MS, but my limit is around 18C before I'm miserable. I feel sick when it's hot and the feeling of the sun on my skin makes me feel itchy. I don't care about the rain or cold, it doesn't bother me other than the daily reminders to the children to take their shoes off right by the front door instead of the hallway to avoid it getting slippy.

We'll probably get another spring, summer and autumn of sticky 20's solidly until late Sept from May. Oh, and it won't be sunny the whole time then either. Let's all pray for it, aye. This country doesn't get seasons, it gets false hopes and then ultimately loses in both winter and summer. Always detest winter. Going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark. Flooded roads. Scraping the car when it’s icy and skidding on ungritted roads. And being so very cold in my house with no central heating. Washing taking at least 5 days to dry and needing two bathroom towels so one gets a chance to dry by the next time I need to use it. Dehumidifier whirring away. I’m sure I could think of some bright sides… nope. So far this year I’ve seen the sun twice, briefly, before more grey and rain. And if one more person on my socials posts a photo of them enjoying sunnier climes I will be sorely tempted to punch their tanned face when I next see them. Do I sound grumpy? Of course. Blame winter.

I like being toasty and rugged up inside. I like being able to wear an appropriate level of clothing while outside to not feel too hot or cold. I mostly like not being drenched in sweat while trying to live my day to day life. I love the feeling of a brisk wind on a sunny winter's day. Perfectly happy with a dry 30 degree heat on a beach summer. But when it's 40 and humid in my flat on a day when it's 30 degrees outside and no amount of open windows or fans will keep me cool it's utterly appalling.

Fair enough! And thanks for the reply. Even when I have the appropriate clothing I still find cold winter weather unpleasant, whereas I’m rarely bothered by the heat in summer. What some seem to find roasting I think is pleasantly warm. 30 and above can get uncomfortable, but that is very rare in my experience living in the north west, and I’d prefer that to 0 degrees. But yeah 40 degrees would be too much even for me, I never experienced that in the UK though.

I'm just reminding myself to be glad the reservoirs and water table are being replenished, idk if you remember but last year we were told to expect serious droughts in england in 2026. I'm prepared to put up with a bit of mud to have water in the taps all year! I've got some waterproof walking boots and a coat and a hat, i can still get around outside And there's nothing like sitting in the warm drinking wine and looking at raindrops on the window.

The way I see it is that staying indoors more often in winter is nice for variety, just as getting out is nice in summer when there's a better reason to. I feel like there's a good balance to both and as long as you have hobbies and things you enjoy that are better done in both seasons you'll be fine. Likewise, forcing yourself to live like it's winter in summer, or summer in winter, is probably the root of this dilemma. Be cosy or active when it feels right.

I naturally seem to enjoy and appreciate each season, and I’m still loving winter. I’m incredibly excited for spring, and enjoying seeing the snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and primroses that have bloomed. I just feel grateful for how magical and mystifying the seasons feel when you embrace them…. I love the darkness of winter, lighting candles, getting cosy with my cats, reading, focusing on my hobbies at home a little more. I like bundling up in many warm layers when I go out. Then on the other hand, through spring and summer, I’ll be outdoors more and loving every second, undoubtedly. There is always something beautiful for us to appreciate.

I always go on holidays in Feb. It's been ultra grey in the UK for the past two months. I don't think the grey is in anyway cosy as many others put it on reddit. It's depressing and cold, wet and you have to wear more layers when you go outside plus the darkness. Working long hours plus a shorter day is horrible. I love long summer days. Staying out to like 9pm. I'm on India RN, the sun sets so fast here it's crazy.

Honestly, I’ve strongly disliked winter for being darker and colder for as long as I can remember so you can imagine how much I’ve hated this winter with the amount of rain and wind we’ve had. It does suck not to be able to go on walks during the day (as I really do enjoy doing!) when the weather is too wet and muddy. I've always been a summer girly but now that I have great outdoor gear, including waterproof trousers and hiking boots, and I've discovered that wearing a cap when it's drizzly keeps my face dry on walks, I've really learned to love rainy walks. It helps that I live near a big park and a couple of lakes, and I work from home so getting outside even if it's raining is very helpful for my mental health. Today has been wet but when I stepped out the sun was fighting to shine through the clouds and it felt a little like spring was on its way! Also, I do love how lush the foliage can look when it's rained this long too. Rain can also make the air feel cleaner and easier to breathe at times.

As someone who grew up in a sub-tropical region and got very sick of being sweaty, I love the winter and despise being hot. Most of my holidays are taken in the winter to places even colder than here. I wish the winters here in Southern England were much colder and snowier, but the grey damp sky doesn't bother me one bit. I take a photo 'update' every so often (weekly if poss) of the same spot where I know early flowers are going to come up. It's very geeky but it's the little things like this that work for me.

Things have actually not been bad, weather-wise, in Glasgow, so I'm enjoying it. Unfortunately, my skin is not. Central heating in the house, air-con everywhere else. My skin is unbelievably dry, not helped by some cream I have to use on my face for a medical condition. I'm genuinely looking forward to the central heating not being on 12+ hours a day. Winter has always been my favourite season and the rain doesn't bother me, I've lived all but the first 3 years of my life in Wales, you have to just accept rain as something that often happens and as I live on higher ground, it's not as if flooding is likely. My favourite seasons are the spring and autumn. But honestly, I still prefer the weather we have now over a sweltering summer. For me summer means: \- Having to go the extra step of drying the car, rather than just washing it in the rain. \- Sticky sun cream everywhere. \- Working with a noisy fan in the background feeling hot and bothered. \- Getting sweaty when going anywhere or doing anything. \- Not being able to sleep in the heat. \- Flies, wasps and pollen getting in the house when windows are open. I still prefer it, heres why: I can actually sleep at night, (more darkness, less light - not sweating in a heatwave) I don't have hay-fever. I don't have sunburn. I've never minded the rain. I'll wear my coat and bring my umbrella and I carry on with my day. For me, rain is literally just water falling from the sky and I don't mind getting wet. I go on walks, to the park, pop down to museums and cafes on the weekends. The dark clouds and muted light actually create a brilliant atmosphere. Cosy, no hayfever (don't need my inhaler), lots of good films in the cinema, January birthday (okay the last one is a bit selfish). Love summer too but commuting in summer is awful (the Northern Line is so hot and loud) and I also find loneliness or sadness harder to deal with in the summer so how much I enjoy it depends on my mental health. Don't get me wrong, when the sun comes out it's amazing. But this is my favourite time of the year in terms of my anxiety being at its lowest levels and feeling at my most cathartic. My morning train is only 20% full, of local commuters, so I can relax more. Come spring and summer when the crowds ramp up, the music starts blasting from cars, and cities become over burdened by tourism - thats when I feel at my most anxious and overwhelmed. It's just too much, it like my nerves are constantly shot.

Still fine with it. Went for a walk the other day when it was 44mph winds with a -8 chill. Doesn’t bother me at all. Rain is fine, just get a proper rain coat. Plus it means everywhere is super quiet because most people won’t even go outside if god forbid they might get wet. Perfect for me who doesn’t enjoy crowds and is anxious in general. Summer is fucking awful, sweaty, too bright and there’s people everywhere there’s no escape. Why is it always so difficult for people to comprehend that others like the cold or rain?

I used to hate the winter and chased the sun even going abroad sometimes to volunteer for the winter. It then dawned on me that I avoided winters because I couldn't face my darkness/demons and things I never realised I pushed deep deep down, locked away. As I started self healing and facing the demons over the years, I have now come to love the winter, rain and all! I'll even go for walks when it's raining. I find it to be cleansing now and a time of going inwards. I have come to value and appreciate the darkness both within and out.

There's a limit to the clothes you can take off to cool down but no in the winter, and I love hunkering down in a big cosy jumper and dressing gown. I'd like to say I live in a nice neighbourhood, and for the most part I do, but there is a small number of individuals who ruin the neighbourhood for eveyone, offroad bikes, smashing house windows, breaking into cars, shouting and screaming, fighting in the street, high or drunk most of the time. In the cold rain they tend to stay indoors its a little bit of breathing space for the rest of us.

As a Brit who has lived through Vancouver Canada winters (not cold but 2-3x as much rain as London) and now southern Denmark (inline with Newcastle) -3 most days but with a -14 windchill that makes it feel almost -20…. Yeah I’d take the uk winters. I adore the British climate, I cried about the sound of dry leaves being blown by the wind on one trip home because in Vancouver it rains on average 20 days in November so there is never dry leaves to blow. Sure winter isn’t summer but please appreciate some of what you have when most of mainland Europe is a block of ice right now.

Last Wednesday was nice here as it somehow stopped raining that day, but yeah it’s a bit crap right now. Although my absolute favourite weather is a cold crisp day I do concede we don’t get many of them. I prefer spring and autumn to winter anyway as overall seasons. My problem with summer is I just can’t handle the heat. I do realise I’m a freak of nature in that I don’t really feel the cold either. A few weeks ago the heating at work was on the blink and my colleagues were wearing coats at their desks while I’m in a t-shirt. If it’s really freezing cold I can add a few layers. If it’s raining I can use an umbrella or wear a waterproof. When it’s too hot and I’m already in shorts and sandals then I don’t have any more adjustments to clothing. And I’m in shorts and sandals for more than half the year already!

I am enjoying myself. I went to a nature reserve, and everything felt so fresh and alive there. This is very mild weather for me. I would not mind it being cold and frosty, with snow. Either way it is great. As for summer -it's not that I hate it, it's that I am not really functional then. Even in winter my room temperature is sometimes only around 15 degrees, because I function best at lower temperatures. Anything above 18 makes me feel sluggish. Plus High Air pressure and sunny weather make me a bit dizzy, especially in the intial days. I just have a different nervous system to the majority, it seems.

If it rains I go out anyway. Did a fairly long hike on Saturday, barely anybody around. Back in time just as it was getting dark for a nice shower and a cosy evening. Obviously it’s nicer in the summer when it’s light until 8-9pm but a bit of mud in the winter never hurt anybody.

Honestly I really love it. Everything is quieter when the weather is like this, more peaceful. Less people out and about, nobody yelling or blasting music I love lighting a candle, having a cup of tea and watching the rain outside my windows. Or putting on my waterproofs and going for a walk while the peak district is so empty. The smell of rain. Idk I just truly can't relate or understand the winter hate personally! The grey skies give me comfort lmao

I like winter, but I think British winters are too mild to be much fun. I've lived in places where it got down to -10c or where it would snow a foot overnight. I much prefered winter there since it came with new experiences. The temperature spread in the UK isn't very wide so the seasons can feel a samey Maybe it's because I didn't grow up here, but I don't have the same obsession with the sun that a lot of British people seem to have. It's nice, but I'm not obsessed with it. It's not very high on my list of "things I'd change about British winter." The rain can be a little annoying, but mostly because it's annoying to walk in. I don't mind it if I'm indoors. The rain is what makes this country so green, and that's something I really appreciate

Looking forward to no rain so I can get out on my bike, but aside from that I’m pretty content with the weather. I’ve never even remotely liked spring/summer until I started riding. I absolutely love waking up when it’s grey and raining outside - makes sitting with a coffee feel so cozy. Love muddy walks and coming home to a hot bath, love it when it’s crisp and cold and fresh. I love being all bundled up in layers, love your stereotypical ‘autumn/winter’ meals, love the dark nights! I even prefer driving etc in the dark tbh

I’m talking motorcycle so at least I have my helmet protecting my face from the wind and rain and can get away with waterproofs without sweating like crazy but it just feels way too sketchy when the roads, especially the white markings, are wet! I bet cycling is bloody awful in that situation. Hopefully the weather picks up soon so you can get on some beautiful days out :)

I ride a motorcycle to work all year round, at least on the couple of days a week when I go in to the office. With the right tyres and decent gear, it’s fine TBH. Obviously I prefer a warmish sunny day, but a heated vest/grips/seat and clobber that is actually waterproof, and Michelin Road 6 tyres which are just amazing, it’s really not an issue if the weather is cold and miserable. I do draw the line at ice, though. That’s just silly.

I don’t mind winter too much. I do enjoy seeing the sun on a cold day but part of me also likes it when it rains (whilst I’m inside) as I like the sound of the sun on the roof / balcony doors as it’s soothing. I think like most people I’m stuck in a perpetual cycle of ‘it’s too cold it needs to heat up’ and then when we’re sweating one out in Summer and there’s no AC being like ‘it’s too hot, it needs to cool down’

I don't mind the rain, it is only the really heavy sheet rain that I won't go out in. But then I have the right clothes that keep me dry and warm. I want snow, I want it to get colder. Next month I am going on holiday to Lapland and I am very excited to be in such cold and deep snow, I look forward to trying to go for a walk in the forests. It just sucks when it rains like this because it really limits what I can do with my dog, I want to take her to the beach for a nice walk but she despises the rain. She also loves being in mud and leaves so I have to wash her paws everytime we come home. I remind myself that this rain is the trade off for having a country that is so green and beautiful with plants.

It’s not so much that I like winter more that I enjoy the changing of seasons. I do especially love the transition from autumn to winter and then winter to spring. I’m in the south east and starting to notice signs that spring will be with us soon. Catkins, buds forming, birds getting frisky, spring bulbs flowering. Not long to go now.

I can't see how anyone Wouldn't enjoy the freshness and peace of a dark winter morning. The rain (when we get it) is so refreshing and the whole experience is invigorating. You just don't get that the rest of the year. I love winter precisely because I'm an outdoor person. I can get things done, it's the time for planting seeds and preppring the garden, getting fences sorted before lambing etc.

Do you honestly think that when people say that, they're imagining weather like this? They're (possibly incorrectly) imagining 0°C temperatures, frost and bright blue sky with a winter sun. This permanent grey sky, drizzle, and 8°C weather isn't winter to me. I swear this wasn't as common in Jan-Feb 10-20 years ago. But maybe it was and I'm using rose tinted glasses.

I appreciate the continual turn of the seasons. If we had broadly the same weather, allowing for some variation in temperature, all year round like some tropical places I'd go spare. You need the grey sludge of January to set against the fecund delights of May. Without death there can be no rebirth and so on.

I love winter, but only the crisp, clear and dry days. This rain is excessive though. I love summer, spring and autumn too. The hardest part of winter for me is the lack of daylight. I really like to get out in the evenings but we don’t have pavements here so walking or running on the roads in the dark is a bit treacherous.

As someone who prefers summer, I don't mind the rain, went for a few walks towards the end of summer and the reservoirs and streams we saw were worryingly low, so feeling quite reassured that they are filling back up. Also I'd rather it we get all the rain over and done with in winter when I don't really want to go out anyway rather than summer when I do want to be out (Yes, i'm aware that's not how it works in realisty)
