We had a rag and bone man until relatively recently, who would call out across the streets. Haven't heard him in a few years but I don't know if it's no longer a thing or if it's just because I'm at work during the day now. Honesty boxes outside farms selling eggs, which you still see in some rural areas away from the larger towns and cities. Quieter places you can still get away with that and it not being smashed or stolen from. Our local butcher still has the old school opening times which means closing before people are finished work, but there are a lot of older people here so they can get away with that.

What’s the weirdest thing someone at work has taken in for lunch?

Geographic lottery of where your parents live. If they happen to live somewhere with good job opportunities and you can live rent free it's a massive help. If they live in a dead zone for jobs you're either stuck in shit low paid dead end jobs, or you have to move and struggle with housing costs.

I have seen some ecology types suggest bird feeding can be counter productive. The example I heard was a rarer species of tits (I think willow tits) being outcompeted for nest sites by blue tits and great tits which more readily come to garden feeders and as a result are sometimes unnaturally numerous. The species that come to garden feeders are generally not the ones that need help. Plus the biosecurity issues of concentrating a lot of birds around feeders.

I tend to think of the connection to history, and that churches were a place where entire communities got together in one place at the same time, a community anchor in a way. You can appreciate the importance of that while also thinking religion isn't the only or even the best way to achieve it. I was in an empty one last year when I brought some friends up from around the country, and it just hit me how many people must have come through these doors over the centuries.

How do you deal with teenagers on bikes trying to kick in door at 3am?

Yeah, if they're trying to forcibly break surely that would cross the threshold for using whatever you have to hand for legitimate self defence? If it's more severe than them just being annoying, but actually a genuine threat.

> That you need a car if you live outside of London. The country is small and very well connected by public transport. Unless you live somewhere very very rural, you can get by fine without a car. Going to disagree here, even in a lot of decent sized towns many will struggle without a car. Especially if your place of work is in a different town. And given the state of the jobs market and housing market, being able to live within a good public transport range of where you work isn't easy for a lot of people.

Good to see someone else defending him.  There were bits of his campaign worthy of criticism - demonising chicken nuggets for using what would otherwise be waste meat, and unscientific tv stunts like piling junk food on a tarp with sugary pop and coke poured over it to make it look disgusting. But the main thing he was trying to do needed to be done.

I have seen other discussions online where people say nostalgia can get bad for people who feel like their best days are behind them. I've often experienced it at times in my life when I've been struggling with things, and don't have much in the future to look forward to. So you end up looking back instead.

> t’s tough living in the same small town i always have, every corner holds memories I've seen others say similar things to this, that if you live in the same town you're constantly being reminded of things from your past. I certainly feel that myself at times. Driving or walking past places my grandma used to take me to. The steps we often walked down. etc.

Recently I had something like this for the old call of duty games, MW3 specifically which I played a lot at a certain point in my teens. Watching old videos of it online really brought it back, but I think those old games aren't very active anymore so it's not like I can really play them properly. Back then you could easily find games to join. I preferred the older graphic style of those games, and dislike the modern gimmicks in some of the later games. Driving back from the other side of the country, after a meetup with uni friends, I had a wave of nostalgia about going to university, especially the first year when I was still finding my feet and had all this naive optimism. Aside from that, there's the standard childhood nostalgia. In my case for grandparents who are no longer around, and for my primary school years.

Why can't the UK build capital projects?

Posted by mahler_1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 369 comments

inevitablelizard@reddit

Yes but I'm talking about over the railways themselves. With green bridges at intervals they would be great and I do think rail expansion is much more preferable to road expansion. Rail is easier to hide in the landscape, less intrusive, takes less space, is quieter, and is easier to mitigate like this. And it's better for other reasons to do with reducing car dependence.

The internet has been degraded directly because of AI slop content ruining search results. AI fundamentally alters things in a way even the internet didn't. Destroying the value of video evidence for news reporting and criminal cases, destroying people's ability to research things, destroying the ability to tell reality from fake, all so some companies can make cheaper adverts and so some people don't have to spend as much time with word documents.

You say that but online search results have degraded massively over the years and AI slop is a major part of the reason for that. It's a lot more difficult to find actual information now.

To free up capacity on other local lines, as local trains are currently using the same lines as inter city ones and getting in each other's way basically. We absolutely need more rail capacity.

HS2 should have been sold as about rail capacity from the start, not speed though it should have still been high speed. Freeing up rail capacity is why it's needed. I wouldn't be against it going up to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

More of the environment stuff should have been in the bill itself, that's a big part of the issue. We've seen mitigation add cost because then a local council tries to block it or meddle for spurious reasons because it needs its own permission on top of the approval for the line itself. The mitigation *existing at all* is very rarely the issue, and if it was included in the HS2 bill we likely wouldn't be sat here arguing about the cost. Regarding offset, the main wildlife issue for projects like this often isn't the land directly destroyed, but how they fragment the countryside into pockets some species can't reliably move between. That problem needs to be mitigated for at the line itself with green bridges at a minimum. Our existing motorway and rail network is bad enough for the movements of some species.

And under very similar wildlife and environment rules as what we have. An interesting data point for all these people who insist a mindlessly destroying everything "fuck wildlife" is the only option. Applies to other European countries too.

Bats with specific habitat needs involving old growth woodland can't just "go live somewhere else" and this level of nature hatred and ignorance is just disgusting. Maybe criticise the council who tried to block that tunnel and inflated its cost because they didn't like the design of it. The problem isn't that tunnel existing, it's that a council was able to hold it up despite it being part of a national level project.

Yeah I decided I'd rather be unemployed and miserable at home than miserable in a shitty hotel room with strangers. I felt that was a totally reasonable solid red line and not what I expected when I applied.

Not sure if it counts as a job offer but I politely left a group interview for a job. While I was unemployed I applied for some stock counting job where you would travel around doing stock checks for a lot of the big supermarkets. During the interview I found out the travel would involve staying in hotel rooms with random work colleagues and I just wasn't remotely comfortable with that.

A lot of this sounds like me. Socially pretty useless. Suspected autism but not diagnosed. Sailed through school without much effort (though was struggling a bit by A levels), did a useless degree I was interested in, but no direction at all and fell into the shit dead end job trap after a period of unemployment. I feel I'm good at strong theory knowledge of various topics, including my degree subject which is my main obsession, but also things to do with politics and philosophical stuff. I feel I notice patterns in society and history most others miss, perhaps due to being a bit disconnected from it all. But none of that is any use career wise because I don't have the skills to do anything with any of it.

Not diagnosed autistic but have suspected it based on a lot of research and that last sentence is pretty accurate. In my case I had a strong interest in a subject which I did a degree in, but once I'd done my degree I didn't have any of the typical graduate "soft skills". Having a strong interest counts for basically nothing, because it's difficult to put that into a job application unless you've done something specific like led or been involved in an organisation.

What’s the worst thing you have seen/got detention at school for?

Not for art but this would be my answer too, I hated being punished for doing nothing wrong. They were pretty much the only time I actually got detentions other than one forgetting homework one. I still think it's a shit teaching method used by shit teachers and I wish I'd had the balls to just walk out of them. Around the time I felt confident to do that they stopped anyway because the class sets changed in the run up to GCSE years.

I'm 30 and feel the same, I have only ever known decline and decay. I have never really seen good times, when I've been old enough to know it at least. I at least have a shit dead end job after being unemployed for several years after uni. But I don't seem to have any viable route out of it. No route to a life worth living, just an existence. I think there's been this scarring effect that gets worse the lower down the age pyramid you go.

This would be mine too. Public rights of way going over private property, and these being extensively mapped, and that they're everywhere. The ability to set off on a walk through local countryside where you live, and not being limited to further out destinations you have to make an effort to get to. It's something I've seen Americans comment on who have visited over here, over there private land rights tend to take supremacy and there's not the same public access rights close to where you live. OS maps themselves are also overlooked. Standardised mapping of the whole country, with a lot of detail on them. And even random little patches of ground or insignificant streams have their local names on OS maps, names which otherwise might have been lost.

I wouldn't say it was mocking Islamophobes though it's been years since I've seen it. It mocks Islamist extremists, but it manages to do that without mocking Islam itself. It mocks specifically the jihadists and portrays them as idiots and losers and rejected even by other Muslims.

As someone who went down a missing persons rabbit hole a while back, it is possible for a body to be overlooked. There have been cases of bodies being found almost hiding in plain sight after several years. On random little patches of ground that are not at all remote, but barely anyone ever has reason to wander over it to find anything. Some guy went missing somewhere near London and was found several years later in a patch of trees near a main road, I believe by highways workers ahead of planned works. Someone in Hull was found on the railway embankment near a park. These two were in plain sight of built up areas, but on a specific bit of ground almost nobody would ever walk on or near so it took a while for them to be discovered.

Good point, a lot of mine involve nice sunny days and greenery. Like my grandparents picking me up from nursery and taking me to the local forestry to just run around and explore. Or when our primary school would open up the field in summer when it was dry and I was always over by the trees (it directly bordered woodland on one side). And the non sunny ones are mainly to do with Christmas.
