How do you deal with teenagers on bikes trying to kick in door at 3am?
Posted by limbless_Mountain@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 481 comments
Unfortunately this isn’t the first time it’s happened, and we now suspect this might be a targeted attack as it’s the same kids every time and they only kick our door. We suspect we might know one or more of the kids names too, but unfortunately their parents aren’t reasonable, or sober, people so talking to the parents is out of the question.
Roughly 30 mins ago [3am] there were a small group of teenagers [from looks roughly 14-18 years old] in full tracksuits on bikes outside my door. I keep my bedroom window open throughout the night, I mean who wouldn’t with the weather we’ve been having? And I could hear them laughing to themselves, and then they full force kicked my front door 4 times with a 5 minute interval between each kick. It woke up everyone in my house. I only managed to catch a glimpse of them getting off on their bikes.
We don’t have any cameras to capture footage of this, but again not the first time this has happened, in the past month alone it’s happened at least 3 times to my knowledge, 4 times according to my younger sibling. But if it’s the kids we suspect it might be, they’re known in the area to cause trouble. Even carrying around knives and other weapons.
I’m just stuck at what we should do. Any attempt to call the police in the past has been inconclusive because they kids get off as soon as they suspect something’s up. And even if police were successful, knowing the type of people they are, we’d just become bigger targets for this type of harassment. There’s no way to know what their actually intentions are once they’re successful at kicking in the door, and our sleep and peace is being disturbed. Help, what should we do?

Sadly this happened and after calling and damage on door we don’t even get a crime number. Just a shrug and call insurance. Can’t be arsed to even log it smh
Es9s@reddit
As a call handler this has been handled completely wrong and you should complain. If there's criminal damage that should absolutely be logged and you should be given an investigation number. Depending on the exact circs you may not get an immediate call out, it's likely to be assigned slow time in a few days. You might even not get an attendance if there is no reasonable line of enquiry, such as you waking up or coming home to see the damage and there's no CCTV or suspect. But this should definitely be logged and I'm sorry that was your experience
RealLongwayround@reddit
I would add (also as a call handler) that we would not be allowed to log this as a nuisance since there is evidence that this is a targeted, unreasonable and repeated attack against OP, which would therefore also constitute Harassment, especially as the victim’s perception of crime needs to be properly considered when logging incidents.
limbless_Mountain@reddit (OP)
What would it be logged at if it is targeted. To give a brief summary, my younger sibling used to actually be partners with the suspected main ring leader of this little group, the break up was rough, and he seemed to never let it go. I’m also somewhat involved as the lad didn’t like me at all because I am transgender and often when passing him to go the shops he’ll yell slurs at me. Nothing I can’t handle.
I don’t feel it’s right to consider this a hate crime, and I’m more concerned about my sisters safety more thank anything.
seefroo@reddit
Its not up to you to decide if its a hate crime, its up to the law. You report it, the police decide what crime has been committed.
Just to be clear - you have called 999 about this and not the non emergency number?
RealLongwayround@reddit
Targeted, unreasonable, repeated behaviours against an individual by an individual (who may be part of a group) constitute Harassment. Crimes committed partly as a result of a real or perceived protected characteristic are hate crimes. If those things do not cause you alarm or distress, they do not constitute assault. If they do, they do constitute assault.
sbaldrick33@reddit
Yeah, the police basically do fuck all now. Don't investigate crimes. Don't walk a beat. They're essentially just a crowd control militia that get wheeled out at sporting and political events, or if unrest is completely unignorable.
They exist to maintain tain the status quo for the rich. If you're not rich and you're the victim of a crime; tough shit.
Enraged-walnut@reddit
Or or or and hear me out here ... their very limited resources are stretched so thin with having to become defacto social workers that what's left is forced to focus on the most serious crimes and/or easy wins/thing they have a chance of following up on.
For example a few years back my car got broken into at a train station car park, no cctv or other evidence they could reasonably follow up on so case instantly closed.
Vivid_Pea594@reddit
But they have resources to arrest people over social media posts but not to walk the beat
sbaldrick33@reddit
Yeah, yeah. Poor car. Now back to the repeated targeted harassment and vandalism case the OP was taking about...

You could try combining with an ultrasonic antisocial behaviour speaker, like the ones for detering cats but set up for teenagers? They're not cheap but as it only happens at night you would be able to pre-empt it.
ProsodySpeaks@reddit
Those things should be fucking banned outright. Talk about antisocial!
Hips_and_Haws@reddit
Don't forget that most people under the age of 35 can hear those things. One of our retired neighbours has one & both my son aged 25 & daughter 18 can hear it at night when they're trying to sleep. Plus the young neighbours who bought the house opposite.
colei_canis@reddit
Please don’t use these!
I’m well outside the ‘target’ demographic of them and I can hear them really badly still, they basically inflict almost painful tinnitus on anyone standing near by. They’re not really ultrasonic at all, and living next to one for a summer was extremely unpleasant.
Ligand-@reddit
My point wasn't to use these indiscriminately at all times (that would be horrendous!) but if OP is getting harassed at 3am by gangs of teenagers which they can hear prior to them vandalising his/her house and they can deter them with a few minutes of noise which they then switch off. I DO NOT advocate using these things permanently for all of the very valid reasons you've all mentioned. The fact they are so despised may go to show how effective they could be in detering the ongoing harassment?
Kadoomed@reddit
Seconding this. My neurodivergent son gets upset walking past cat ones because of the sound which I can't hear.
Glitter bomb then instead.

Hell, even a welfare check and referral to a network like NACOA if these are minors with addict parents.
linkheroz@reddit
This is the important part to building a harassment case. Call the police every time and get it recorded. After the first one OP gets a crime number and each subsequent call, you give them the number and they'll add to it.
Unfortunately, this might take a long time to get any action but paired with camera footage, a harassment case is a lot easier to build.
thefooleryoftom@reddit
Doesn’t matter. Call them anyway.

I had similar issues last year, door bell camera with an alarm on it off Amazon. I activated the alarm and that was the last time they did it. Unfortunately you need to evidence gather.
limbless_Mountain@reddit (OP)
Do you have any recommendations or a link to that camera you got? I would go with ring but the subscription costs to store and download footage is kinda of putting me off.
SoFetchItHurts@reddit
Tapo works on an SD card - so no subscription required.
PumpedUpPatek@reddit
Eufy do the same - No subscription required. You can get the little plug in "alarm" that holds the SD card, inside the house
3-6-6@reddit
Eufy is great if you buy into their full Ecosystem too. I have their external cctv and home alarm system aswell as the doorbell and they all record back to a 'dvr' in the house. You can go further and setup motion alarms and sensors on doors/windows also but they cost £££.
OctopusGoesSquish@reddit
I have a Eufy robot vacuum. Is this the last line of defense?
3-6-6@reddit

PumpedUpPatek@reddit
I have the Homebase to store the door bell footage on - I keep meaning to get another CCTV camera for it, too.
3-6-6@reddit
Yeah thats what I meant by dvr. I thought you meant the plug in doorbell chime that also has an SD card slot in it to keep the doorbell footage.
Legitimate_Corgi_981@reddit
Can confirm, had a bunch of these idiots doing donkey kicks (turning away from the door then swinging their leg back as hard as they could) to my door on their way back from school. Caught the idiots on a repurposed old Amazon Fire Tablet I left facing down towards the path and set recording around they had done it the last 2 days in a row.
Bought a Tapo and hub (online subscriptions only £2.99 a month) and that plus the evidence given to police of them in their uniform (making it super easy for the cops to go into the local school and get identities) finally stopped it.
Worth noting that if they are doing it to you and you don't know them, they are probably already doing it elsewhere nearby so the police will be gathering evidence of a pattern.
KetracelYellow@reddit
The only problem with using just an SD card, if the little darlings steal the camera you have no footage.
No-Translator5443@reddit
Just have the camera high up so they can’t
TheTwoWhoKnock@reddit
You need to capture clear photos of their faces. Won’t happen from high up.
If you get an Amazon device and it’s damaged or stolen I believe Amazon will replace it free
No-Translator5443@reddit
Mines like 12-14ft up and it captures faces fine, op could always put a cage over it to stop it from being taken
scuderia91@reddit
The SD card isn’t in the camera, it’s in a separate unit inside your house.
Abhi96_@reddit
Not if you purchase a smart hub. The SD card is stored in the hub, not the camera, so negates it being stolen. It's an additional cost, but well worth it.

I got a more cam from Amazon it was like £50 you can add an sd card and the subscription is £4.99 a month so within budget.
litfan35@reddit
I've got an eufy wireless. SD camera is on the chime inside the house so even if they stole the camera as a other commenter says you'd still have the footage. No subscription fees, really recommend it. Easy to set up.

Eufy doorbell.
appocomaster@reddit
We use EUFY, have done for years. Couple of cameras and a home unit. got to make sure to angle it right. We don't use it as a doorbell / etc but in an emergency you can speak through it and listen through it.
All the videos are stored in a homehub wired to our router, and then the cameras need to be in range of the hub.
I went with it because I didn't want my videos stored online and accessible by others.
Biggest issue is if you have rubbish internet it impacts viewing remotely, but not an issue for most people these days.

I bit the bullet and got a ring camera and subscription. The peace of mind I now have is worth its weight in gold.

I have a Reolink E1 outdoor. It's not subtle but it has full pan/tilt/zoom, spotlight, speaker and alarm, and can record to a memory card. No subscription required. Their customer support team is good, too.

I got a Tapo doorbell and hub bundle for around £75. Stick a SD card in the hub and no subs required. We’ve had no issues since.

xxdavidxcx87@reddit
You can get the blink camera, I believe it has an SD card in the hub, alternatively pony up for a ring sub, it really is important to have a deterrent to these kind of people, they are most likely looking for the attention they don't get at home.

maersyl@reddit
Police mate of mine once said never have a bat near the bed or whatever as courts will deem this to be an offensive weapon. Instead, and I loved this, he said get one of those huge metal torches that take like 3 huge batteries. That way your defence is “I was using the torch to illuminate the way as I went around the house due to noise and I was then confronted by a person in my house and I hit them with it as I thought I was going to be attacked.”
Better than “I was carrying a bat around the house with me” which courts will say was a weapon!
I now have a big fuck off torch by my bed. Made of metal and heavy and sturdy as sin.
gimpssexual@reddit
Did a mate tell you that or are you repeating something you saw elsewhere? Because that isn’t right.
You can’t carry anything into the streets to use as a weapon but you can absolutely use anything you have to hand in self defence. If you happened to have a gun in the house you could use it, never mind a bat.
https://www.brettwilson.co.uk/couple-who-shot-burglar-not-to-be-charged/
To get ahead of a reply already being typed, that famous case with the farmer who shot intruders and went to jail, the issue was that he laid a trap and shot them in the back.
People think you aren’t allowed to say “boo” to an intruder in the UK. We actually have quite permissive self defence laws when it comes down to it. You don’t need to wait to be attacked first and you don’t need to be in actual danger, you just need a genuine belief you are in danger.
If someone is screaming “I’m going to fucking kill you” so you attack them first, you’ll probably be fine even if it was just words.
And then don’t forget that even if you are charged you’ll get a jury trial.
What you aren’t allowed to do is chase them, booby trap, bait them or carry something in the streets to use as a weapon. But of course there is no law against owning a baseball bat. I wouldn’t put nails or barbed wire around it though. I also wouldn’t swing open the door to attack them, might get away with it but you’d probably go to trial.
If a couple can get away with no charges after using a gun I think I’ll be fine using a bat.
rinkydinkmink@reddit
The flashlight thing is a commonly given piece of self defence advice, Maglights are the most well-known for it, and police do or did carry heavy torches like this as a dual purpose item (so I was told anyway).
If you have anything at all with the plan to use it for "self-defence" in advance then that's illegal, or yes you're right in theory anything you genuinely had to hand would be legal to use. The key is having a reasonable excuse to have it in the first place - people often debate whether or not having a baseball bat handy would fool the police/court and it probably depends on a lot of things, but in the UK most people don't play baseball ... there is a pretty good reason to have a good torch handy though, especially if walking at night.
gimpssexual@reddit
Yeah that’s why I asked if the OP was telling porkies because I’ve heard it before.
You don’t need a reasonable excuse to own a baseball bat. You dint need to “fool” anyone. They aren’t illegal. They aren’t controlled. I can buy one today if I wanted and I don’t even need ID. You can own one for no other reason than you want to own a baseball bat.
It is on the prosecution to prove you bought the baseball bat with the intent to use it as weapon as there is a presumption of innocence in the UK. Unless you are the sort of person who posts fantasies about using your lovely new bat on someone’s skull on social media, that’s going to be hard to prove. Or if you modified it, hence why I said probably not a good idea to put barbed wire around it.
That’s if you even make it court. If you genuinely acted in self defence, CPS isn’t going to waste time getting you in front of a likely sympathetic jury.
SuperExstatic@reddit
I worked with a guy “Tom” who killed an intruder his brother “Dave“ also killed another intruder one done it with a knife the other with a screwdriver but “Dave” went to prison and “Tom” got away no punishment and the reason for that was the amount of times they stabbed the intruders “Tom” one stab guy died right there infront of him , “Dave” went full frenzy the guy died at hospital

Good idea. Reminds me of how women in this country are recommended to carry Deep Heat spray rather than import a pepper spray like Mace which is considered an illegal weapon like carrying a knife. That way, their defence is “I regularly use this spray for my back pain, which is why I had it on me while out.”
If the police were to check up on me, they’d find records going back years at various osteopaths showing that I do indeed suffer from back pain.

secondgin@reddit
Piss or bleach. Either works.
Dimac99@reddit
Piss you can get away with but bleach is a chemical attack that you can and should get jailed for. Stupid kids don't deserve to have their eyesight permanently damaged just for being stupid kids, no matter how annoying.
DreamsComeTrue1994@reddit
Well that’s the problem with the UK right now.
Hurting the people that try to enter your home kicking your door with your kids sleeping inside is frowned upon. People snatch phones all day long on motorbikes while others steal parcels from front doors, or shoplift on the regular.
Calling the police yields nothing, they won’t even bat an eye. Even if they were to arrest them they would be free the next day cause we don’t have any spare cells in prison at the moment.
People with no prospect in life can do whatever with no consequences at all, while normal people trying hard for a better life need to keep sucking it up because you know they have something to lose.
Fun fact, you are most probably indirectly pay for these kids homes, clothes and bikes. Or directly if it used to be your bike..
Dimac99@reddit
What has any of that got to do with it being wrong to scar and/or blind children for life?
DreamsComeTrue1994@reddit
So far they are the only ones scaring the OP for life psychologically and potentially financially.
You call them children, but in my world children are not out at 3am vandalising other people’s houses and threatening them.
It’s common criminals that do this.
jibbetygibbet@reddit
They’re children because of their age. Thats just what words mean.
It doesn’t matter what they’ve done wrong. Scarring and blinding anyone, children or adult, is wrong, no matter what they’ve done, and certainly not for kicking a door and running away. What’s wrong with you?
StickmanEG@reddit
It’s because being dead hard is easy on the internet, so you can just say stuff about chucking bleach on kids because they banged on your door.
People are dumb as fuck.
DreamsComeTrue1994@reddit
Age doesn’t matter here. These criminals won’t become exemplary citizens once they turn 18. Of course, I am not in favour of chucking bleach (or causing any other harm) on anyone. I just hope that the police would actually punish such criminals disproportionately hard for their crime so that crime wouldn’t be worth doing.
Unfortunately, police and politicians, powered by people like yourself, prefer a slap on the wrist and some prayers that these kids will suddenly become angels over actually doing something about it, which leaves OP and his own children with no help in this stressful situation. And if they act on it, they will be in trouble.
It’s easier to pay thousands to move house than have the police deal with some petty criminals. That says it all.
secondgin@reddit
Obviously it'd be watered down. Thinking more along the lines of destroying clothing than blinding anyone.
colei_canis@reddit
They don’t deserve it but they’re hardly being ‘stupid kids’, they’re dishing out violence because they know adults cannot deliver violence in return.

secondgin@reddit
This country's gone to the dogs!
Dimac99@reddit
Technically yes, obviously it is. Practically speaking, people have been left with quite severe injuries and their attackers haven't been jailed, so I wouldn't worry about piss.
FranzFerdinand51@reddit
"I've been assaulted while repeatedly harassing this family at 3am and trying to kick in their front door"
Ok?
Snatchematician@reddit
They’re not doing this because they’re ‘stupid’, they’re doing this because they are antisocial and violent.
inevitablelizard@reddit
Yeah, if they're trying to forcibly break surely that would cross the threshold for using whatever you have to hand for legitimate self defence? If it's more severe than them just being annoying, but actually a genuine threat.
jibbetygibbet@reddit
So? It’s hardly a proportionate response and two wrongs don’t make a right.
Kicking a door and legging it because you think ‘knock and run’ is funny is antisocial kid behaviour, it’s nowhere even close to blinding you is it?
Dimac99@reddit
Arguably they're antisocial and violent because they're stupid. Regardless, being blinded for life isn't an appropriate punishment.
Distinct-Tour-5654@reddit
Or, they're antisocial and violent because they're little shits who have never had it given back to them and their parents are absolute wasters.
If blinding is the issue, give them goggles before dousing them in bleach, voila 😉🤣

When I was a teenager, we moved into a flat in a dodgy bit of town. One day 5 kids stormed the house and ran about inside, not trashing the place, but just trying to show who was boss. I had been bullied a lot in my younger years and something inside me snapped. Went into the kitchen, grabbed a pint glass, went into the toilet and filled it up with my piss. Ran after them and grabbed one of them just before he exited the close by the neck and poured my piss over his hair, head and under the collar of his top whilst he struggled to breathe. My Mum backed me up to the hill when the other boys Mum came screaming at my door. We had a peaceful existence there until we moved. Some people only learn a certain way, unfortunately.

People stormed inside your house, as they were running off you had time to run into the kitchen, then to the bathroom, then have a piss all while being fast enough to catch up to them holding a pint of piss, close enough to grab them and pour the piss down ones shirt. Zero chance this is true and its a weird as fuck fantasy.

It was summer so he was also wearing shorts, so even more damage I guess, he screamed and fell on the floor then hobbled off with his friends.
They didn’t come back and Tbf I was worried I would be found out but at the end of the day i still feel it was justified.

FYI
If you live in the UK and this story is true, you are publicly confessing to a firearms offense with that post. Potentially up to possession of a firearm with the intent to cause serious injury. That, and lesser offenses that this post might be confessing to, could result in serious jail time.
Danfen@reddit
Good thing it's an anecdotal story on an anonymous forum then
lordrothermere@reddit
It's worth noting how severely such an action would be treated within the legal systems of the UK. If only for anyone reading it and thinking 'that sounds like a good idea.'
By 'anecdotal story' do you mean 'untrue'?
Danfen@reddit
No by anecdotal I mean hearsay and not facts. No one is going to he chasing up the Op for a random tale they've posted on Reddit containing zero identifiable information.

Active_Arugula_7079@reddit
What you mean the police don’t use reddit as their main source for crime prevention????!!!! 😮
Steppy20@reddit
I don't think it would likely escalate to possession with intent to cause injury.
100% a firearms offence though. Even if I did this with my airsoft rifle (literally designed to be safe to shoot at people, except their face) I'd be admitting to a firearms offence.
lordrothermere@reddit
I'm not a lawyer, so take with with a pinch of salt, but it appears the following is the case:
There's mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines that suggest that shooting someone in the leg with an air rifle would be considered a firearms offense with intent to cause serious injury/gbh. And the nature of the gun becomes less important than it is for prosecution/sentencing for possession alone, as soon as it is used in the committing of a crime.
Air rifles are considered by UK law, in terms of sentencing, as lethal weapons (based on case law relying on the fact they are used to kill small game). I don't believe that's a judgement that has been made for Airsoft.
It appears that, as soon as a air gun has been used to threaten someone or fired at someone, then it gets treated as a lethal weapon. The severity of the sentence then is about intent. That it is a sub 12/6 ft/lb weapon matters less given that put is already considered by law a lethal weapon. Or at least less than it would fit a possession charge.

That's not how it works. If you defend yourself you won't. If you're excessive you will.
Expensive_Peace8153@reddit
Agreed. The person above who shot the teenagers with an air rifle likely would be judged to be using excessive force though. You might even be able to justify a kitchen knife if you're genuinely afraid of losing your own life, but a gunshot through an open window as they're running away is never going to fly as a self defence argument.

Ive literally just said "I know this from experience". I came back from the climbing wall one afternoon and found a burglar in my living room. He ran to the patio doors but they were locked and i gave him a proper kicking. He tried to give me £12 to say sorry 😅. I eventually let him run out of the kitchen door and he went out the back garden and over the fields. He had made a stack of goods at my back door with my wife's jewellery, games console, did player etc. He even had a full block of cheese from the fridge 😅 police said big blocks of cheese are eas to sell in rough pubs lol. When I gave a description to the police, they knew exactly who it was and arrested him within 30 minutes. The police didn't even mention that he had obviously had a kicking. The whole thing was pretty surreal but I guess theres no such thing as an 'average' burglary. If it happened again I would do the same thing. No way im letting some little prick walk out of my house with my stuff.

As others have suggested you need to invest in a camera and motion sensor activated big light. A friend of mine even has an audio 'You are being recorded' that plays loudly if the motion sensor is triggered, with a big fuck off camera at the front door. Keeps everyone away because they can't get away with it.
Atlantean_Raccoon@reddit
Make sure your doors are secure with bolts, install a discrete camera to build up some evidence so the police can't just turn around and say they will start monitoring the situation. Most importantly, call the police as soon as these little shits turn up and tell them you are worried about your own and your family's safety. Make a record on paper of each time these arseholes turn up and every you speak to the police with dates, time and take note of how seriously you were taken by them.
If the police do not take action, take copies of your notes, one for a formal complaint against your local police, another to your local authority and to your MP and/or devolved equivalent. I'd also mention that you are so concerned you are not being heard and protected in your own home that the next step will be the press. This can dislodge their idle arses out of their chairs and do something about.

Personally having trouble with neighbours, so bought some "alfred" cameras, and one is in front window, next to door in full view of window.
You do have to pay for sub, but I'm just giving you a general idea, as it's not a great amount of money (I think 50 a year); and you can obviously shop around.
Then if you have a "decent" phone or laptop, find the footage, crop it, save it to device and report every incident- then you can have a nice big folder of evidence. Who knows, yoi may even get footage that can be used and the police will even take.
I will admit I'm having next to no luck with my problems, but bit by bit, building a severe case against them woth noise apps from the council, footage and a contact for me to email (as well as things that can't be done immediately due to ruddy health and safety etc), but at least its recorded and "filed".
Best of luck, and hope you get it sorted pretty soon.

This happened to us about 3 years ago and we have cameras! We’re a mum and daughter, and the little bleepers ran up to our front door, brayed on it (banged hard) and ran away. There were about 6 or 8 of them, and my daughter opened her window shouting “There’s a camera there!” To which one of them shouted back “We don’t fucking care’!”
I was shaking so much from being woken it took me ages to go back off to sleep. I reported it to the police on their website but heard nothing back.
Apparently they’d gone through the village doing it to random houses. I wonder if they ever think about their stupid game now that they’re 3 years older?

Call 999 and say your home is being broken into by an armed gang.
BritishGent_mlady@reddit
Surprised to find that this is such a rare comment. It’s pretty much the only answer.
“999, police, people are trying to break in, and they are armed.”
Even if they are not armed, you don’t know that.
If you can, get a camera and record them for weeks beforehand and get good quality footage. Also, if you can, try to ascertain who they are and where they live. Makes the Police’s job a lot easier, which they will be grateful for 🙂
Racing_Fox@reddit
I believe they ask if you have seen a weapon, I’m not sure if you can be done for lying about it and most people will assume you can so won’t lie.
Personally I’d tell them I was fearing for my life and armed and will use lethal force if they manage to enter my property. The police will turn up, even if it’s just to arrest me.
Honestly though, I don’t generally have an issue with our self defence laws but feel that given the dire state of police funding at the moment, they should be extended to allow us to use force against people trying to break into our properties rather than waiting for them to actually break in. Same with people stealing cars and bikes, let us use force against them if we see them.
I feel like you’d have a lot fewer cases of this if next time someone was trying to kick a door down a barrel of an air rifle appeared out of the letterbox or scalding hot water drained down from above.

Set up a discreet camera watching the front door.
Wait up till they are about to do it then set up inside your house right by the front door.
When you see them winding up to do it. Get ready.
Just as they are ahout to boot your door, open the front door and wait for them to stumble.
Ideally make sure the camera is recording the interaction and be on the phone to the police at the same time and when the door opens. Make it obvious you are on to the police.

What the kids didnt know is i collect swords...
Shockingly, the 2nd time they did it was the last. The first time I just left them to it, I was scared ill admit... the second time, I was hormonal, exhausted, and had a pounding headache, and as a result had ZERO patience left. I kept one of the swords by my bed... pretty sizable, but very comfortable to wield. (Like I said, I lived alone, and I didnt think my 'best friends with everything that isnt a spider' cat was gonna be much help if I got attacked) So I grabbed it, ran to the door, opened it and just stood there, in my Pj's, with this glorious shiny big sword. They laughed, then I ran at them. Think... mini pyramid head 🤣 never seen anyone go from full belly laugh to utter terror so fast 😂

Catch them on camera- use a Ring doorbell, trail cam, something like that and report them to the Police...or name and shame them on social media. Other option is just do your best to ignore them. Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
Even if the police don't respond, they will log the report, and that paper trail is important. Ask for a crime reference number every time.
As others have said, get a camera, get some motion-sensor lights .
Do NOT respond with violence, you could end up in prison yourself, or getting hacked with a machete. Keep your door closed and keep calling the police in real time.
Racing_Fox@reddit
A reference number doesn’t help you sleep at night when you no longer feel safe in your own home.
It’s a shame, I’d tell the police I was armed, fearing for my life and prepared to use lethal force should they manage to enter. The police would turn up, but only to arrest the victim.
Tetracropolis@reddit
Arrest the victim for what?
Racing_Fox@reddit
Threatening to use a knife. It was said half in jest.
But the police do seem to take more action against ‘vigilantes’ than actual criminals, but that’s probably because the ‘vigilantes’ are normal, decent people so cooperate with the police instead of hiding.
Tetracropolis@reddit
They wouldn't. It's not a crime to use a knife if you fear for your life, much less state that you will if certain events come to pass.
It's a thread where someone's asking for advice about what they should do when a gang of youths are kicking their door. Other people who are in similar situations might be reading this. Half-jesting that the police will arrest them if they say they'll take measures to defend themselves is wildly inappropriate. If someone has people breaking into their house the last thing they need is the thought in their head that the police will side against them.
Racing_Fox@reddit
The problem is U.K. self defence law is complicated. Would it be argued in court that if you’d have feared for your life you’d have left the property by a back door instead? You don’t know until you’re in court.
If you had a shotgun and stood at the front door with it waiting for them to break in, would that be considered premeditated or self defence? Again, you don’t know why the jury will say until you have a court date.
>If someone has people breaking into their house the last thing they need is the thought in their head that the police will side against them.
Unfortunately that’s the world we live in. I like the police, I’m not one of these that thinks they’re out to get you. If you get pulled over etc and treat them with respect you’ll be much better off than if you assume they’re trying to get you. But in an event like this. I honestly can’t truthfully say I’d trust the police/courts/law to have my back. You’d end up being treated as a criminal and left with debilitating anxiety for months/years while waiting for a court date.
Tetracropolis@reddit
No. It would never get to court. There is no duty to retreat on English law, and certainly not in your own home. The CPS would never prosecute.
You're entitled to use lethal force if you have an honest belief that such force is necessary to end the threat.
Racing_Fox@reddit
Lots of self defence cases where the defendant is found not guilty end up in court.
How do you prove an ‘honest belief’?
Tetracropolis@reddit
What country do you think this is? You don't need to prove an honest belief. The prosecution needs to prove that you didn't have such a belief.
The cases you mention only reach court where the CPS thinks there's a reasonable prospect that they can prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused did not have such a belief, or that he only had such a belief because of something like alcohol use which is his own responsibility, or that he engineered the situation.
Racing_Fox@reddit
That’s the theory yes. But they’re sat in a quiet courtroom applying rational and logic to the equation. You were in your home in the middle of the night with a group of unknown people trying to break in. They’re entirely different situations. I could quickly see them believing you were in the wrong and leaving you to try and convince them otherwise.
So it would end up in court if you were drunk? I don’t drink myself, but god forbid someone have a drink in their own home. It shouldn’t come into it. If someone is trying to break in to your property it shouldn’t matter if you were drunk, you’re in your property you should be able to do enjoy a drink without it being held against you if you take action against someone trying to break into your house.
We place too much blame onto victims instead of placing the blame on the criminals themselves. They’re criminals, they committed a crime and should have considered all the possible outcomes before doing so. If they broke into a house and were killed or injured by a drunk homeowner, that’s their risk to take.
Just look at that case where the police officer was done because a criminal on a scooter crashed trying to get away. What sort of a joke of a nation are we that instead of blaming the criminal running from the police for their accident we instead blame the police for trying to catch them.
What classes as engineering a situation?
Tetracropolis@reddit
They wouldn't be in court. The CPS only takes cases to court where they think they can prove - beyond a reasonable doubt - that the accused didn't fear for their life or that their response was grossly disproportionate. It basically never happens. The one who killed a traveller a few years ago with a screwdriver was cleared within 48 hours.
The factor you mention about a quiet courtroom and the event in the heat of the night is specifically referred to in the legislation
..
No. Only if they could prove that you used excessive force because you were drunk. It very likely wouldn't matter and wouldn't be held against you.
No we don't. People getting jailed for actions they take against burglars in their home almost never happens, and when it does it's invariably when they've taken extreme measures like shooting the burglars in the back and torturing them after the fact.
That's a completely different situation and the guy was cleared.
If you were goading them into it. Suppose you stand at the door with a knife in your hand and say "I bet you don't have the balls to step in here and fight me", back up behind the threshold of your door, then when they come in you blow them away with a shotgun, you're probably not getting away with that. If you say "If you come in here I will kill you" and they do it, you'd probably be fine.
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
Bigger issue here is one person against a group of people who may or may not have weapons themselves. Anyone who thinks OP would come out on top in an altercation like that watches too much tv.
Racing_Fox@reddit
The idea would be to tell the police that you’re ready to use lethal force in the hope that they’d actually turn up before they break in and not just leave it a few days instead.

We contacted our local mp before after no action from the police regarding anti social behaviour (selling drugs from a downstairs flat) and that surprisingly made a difference. Local mp’s actually work for us and they have strong links to the police so it might raise the question as to why nothing has been done. Again, just be persistent. Is it council housing, landlord at all? Complain to them. Speak to your gp about a lack of sleep, fear of reprisals affecting your mental health. Get as many people involved until it can’t be ignored anymore. Make a fuss.
Also, b&q used to sell dummy cameras that had a battery powered red flashing light, these are a cheaper option and a surprisingly effective deterrent at times. A little sign saying this property is covered by cctv might also help too.

I've read some of your posts on this thread and even now you're still saying things like "well it sounds like I might have to get a camera then".... Yes! Yes you should! Protect your home, family and start gathering evidence.
The cameras from the ring alarm systems have sirens that you can trigger remotely. When they come next time, a siren alone, might be enough to get them to move along. It draws unnecessary attention from other homes nearby.
I'm sorry you're going through this, but you need to be a bit more proactive than you're being (by your post content), especially considering this isn't the first time it's happened. Police will want/need evidence - start gathering it.

we had this happen too, they even broke our fence. we installed cameras and emailed their school with evidence, because we live right next to their school, that didnt stop them. the only thing that helped was opening a police case for harassment, a police officer went to talk to them and their parents and I guess it scared them enough to never try kicking our door again.

pixelunicorns@reddit
Get the camera, if you think you know the kids (names, parents, addresses) go speak to the police. Let them know what's been happening, that you are getting camera for evidence but let them know who you suspect. Ask them for advice on how to protect your home and family. Don't call the emergency number now, either go down to the station or contact them via phone or email.
I think you can also speak to the council about this too, I'm not sure exactly what department but I assume it would be part of the social services. If the kids live in council-owned housing then the council should definitely be informed about any anti-social behaviour from tenants.

How is calling the police and getting a camera not the first thing you do?
BarNo3385@reddit
Probably is the first thing, but it wont solve anything. Police wont respond and the camera will just get smashed if its targetted.
Something similar happened to our neighbours, went from kicking on the door to smashing the front windows in with a golf club and bricks through the upstairs windows. Police still didnt even bother to come out, just provided a ref for insurance. They had to move house in the end to get away from it.
Legitimate_Corgi_981@reddit
The lack of a camera is often the reason for targeting. So many houses now have them, the ones without noticeable ones are where they will target for the random "tiktok influenced pranks".
Racing_Fox@reddit
Because the police are so underfunded they won’t respond to this. Happened to my brothers friend last year, someone tried breaking in and the police said they would send someone round the next day.

Investing in a security camera/video doorbell is going to be your best way forward. I personally cannot recommend the eufy brand highly enough (they are a sister brand of Anker). They are fairly budget friendly and don't require a subscription. Getting video footage and reporting this to the police are your next steps. Going to the parents will likely get you nowhere and they'll keep doing it. A camera recording them will either be a deterrent or evidence.
Illustrious_Style321@reddit
Set up a kettle in your room, keep it half full and keep about 500g to 1kg of sugar nearby + keep 3-4 mugs with handles nearby. Next time it happens, add sugar to kettle, boil kettle, once boiled transfer to mugs, turn your bedroom lights off and wait for them to come back for the second kick... then you know what to do at that point
Artistic-Weekend3775@reddit
In my opinion, and speaking from similar experience, don’t chase them, don’t confront them, and try your best not to show that it’s bothering you. A reaction is often exactly what they’re looking for.
I’d get a couple of cameras to document everything and keep a written log of dates, times and what happened. I’d also speak to your neighbours and ask whether they’ve heard or seen anything. If they’re willing, ask them to add their own reports to the police, Crimestoppers or the local council, as multiple reports from different people can help build a picture of what’s going on.
Make sure you keep hold of any incident or crime reference numbers and continue updating them with any new footage or evidence.
This sounds incredibly stressful to deal with. I’d also consider speaking to your GP sooner rather than later, particularly if it’s affecting your sleep, stress levels or mental wellbeing. Aside from getting support, it also creates a record of the impact this situation is having on you.

It’s worth the camera and making logs. It’s up to you how much info you give the police but if you and a camera and a pen and paper take notes of all the times anything by takes place, what happens, the details, and especially that you’ve told them at some point to desist and that they’ve continued it can all work towards a harassment case a much easier. Build a case. Make an initial report however vague, with or without the suspected identity. The point is your safety first. Depending on your neighbourhood and police response people can always call in noise complaints, if you wanted it to seem more anonymous but have the police come break something up
limbless_Mountain@reddit (OP)

Be sure to mount it out of their reach, or get a concealed camera. And, review the footage often!
A_Roll_of_the_Dice@reddit
You want the camera visible and distinct so that they know full well that they're being recorded. Preferably one that lights up when they get in range of it, so it grabs their attention. Eufy do one like that. It stopped some dodgy fucker dead in his tracks at 2am when he was coming to my front door all shady.
Instead of whatever he had initially planned to do, he just rang the doorbell and acted like he was there for legitimate reasons at 2am...
On my doorbell footage, I saw him shush someone who was waiting around the corner of my house out of sight in case I answered.
When I reviewed the footage on another camera, he'd been trying other people's doors and messing with their letterboxes.
Having a camera that lights up, letting them know that they're being recorded, is a very good deterrent that's worth investing in.

Weirdly this has happened to me recently but it was two different groups who did it, months apart. Biggest mistake was moving to a new build estate.
Veenkoira00@reddit
Plenty of entertaining suggestions here. But what you actually need is night vision cameras that are disguised – otherwise they just get broken before the actual "fun" starts. Then use the footage to make proper reports to the police (don't forget to insist on a crime number every time).
Let the council's Children's Services know. These under 18s are engaging in criminal activity (police matter) AND are obviously not receiving the guidance, control and supervision they should receive from their parents; in other words the parents are neglecting their children (SS matter).

bumpoleoftherailey@reddit
Do they live in council homes? I think councils can respond well to persistent antisocial behaviour, with eviction being on the table. As with other measures though, you’ll need CCTV evidence and a thorough log of incidents.
As someone else mentioned, bright motion-activated lights can help - apart from making your camera footage much better, they mightn’t be so brave with a spotlight on them.
Racing_Fox@reddit
That’s the problem, you don’t know.
Councils also don’t do fuck all. They let housing associations deal with council housing now. There’s some in my town, they’re always shoplifting from the local shop and one has been in prison twice in the last year for shoplifting/threatening people with a broken bottle. Another one that comes from a family that is known to the police lives in a flat (small block of 6 new builds) he smashed the windows in of his downstairs neighbour and is a known drug dealer.
The only one that the housing association has actually kicked out was a guy who stabbed his partner in front of her young children (one of whom stabbed him back). The rest are still around
Personally id suggest that anyone who commits a crime should have their benefits reduced/removed. Move them out of the community they’re terrorising and into minimum security prisons with tags to make sure they’re back at a certain time.
They get their housing, the community gets to feel safe.

Unfortunately doesn’t work, my brothers friend had someone trying to break into their house in London, they called the police and were told they couldn’t send anyone.
Personally if that were me I’d have told them in that case I’m fearing for my life and arming myself with a knife and will be using it if they manage to break in. I’m sure they’d be out in a jiffy to feel my collar.
I honestly don’t think the police pay nearly enough attention to burglaries and thefts as they should. They see it purely as a non violent (and thus relatively minor) crime. They don’t consider the wider psychological impacts that it has on the victims. The fear it instills in them, the feeling that they aren’t safe in the once play they should be able to relax.

Fit a camera that is either hidden or out of reach. Find out which school or college they go to & show any footage to the head teacher. Ring social services at your local council. Name & shame them on Facebook or join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme & talk to your neighbours & link up with other groups. If every other adult gets to know these kids & interacts with them constantly, there is a possibility they'll stop being anti social.
Or maybe the parents will be fed up with the school & every other adult in FB slagging off their crap parenting skills they'll either do some parenting or move away.

If it weren’t for the fact the police take more action against vigilantes than they do the criminals that make them necessary, we’d have no problem.
I understand our self defence laws but feel they need tweaking to allow defending of our property. As of now, you can’t touch them until they come into the property, I’d rather we be allowed to shoot anyone trying to break into our homes with air rifles or throw scalding water over them. Why do we have to wait for our lives to be in danger before taking action if we could just prevent them from getting that far in the first place.

Camera, police, record it on your phone. Document it. Report them to the council. Unless you can "resolve it in person" the chances are nothing will get done though. I used to have a crowd of the little fuckers booting a football at my front door at 4am. After that it was hard-packed snowballs being launched at my window, trying to put it through.
After a few days they stopped doing it, but I still had other confrontations with the main guy who tried to goad me into a fight one afternoon when he was with his girl. I left him with an open-ended warning and reported him to the police.
I'm not confrontational, I'm not violent, I never lost my temper enough when I was the victim of violence to really fight back, but at the time I lived alone and I thought I might as well at least try and defend myself seeing as this was my home.

It's a social media trend at the moment, we just went through a few weeks of this before they 1. we're motivated to take action, 2.) took action.
You are more than likely not the only one in your area having this happen, check your local Facebook or neighborhood page (I know, but they are useful for something) and start connecting with others who are experiencing it. Have everyone report EVERY instance, and do it through the police's online portal if you can... that way there is a paper trail.
If the police have open surgery hours coordinate for as many people to attend as possible. I had to take time off work to attend which was annoying AF (why do I have to take a penalty to get you to do your damn job?) but in the end it put pressure on then to do something.
it took about three weeks for them to catch the kids. They had to appear Infront of a magistrate from what I heard.

If you have a camera they will likely wear masks and break the camera. A motion sensitive flood light might help, but only if out of reach and not near windows in case they throw stones at it. In all seriousness, the least stressful thing to do is move house. If you're renting that will be easy. If you own the place, then it is best not to report to the police or to the council as you will have to declare that when you sell and it will make it impossible to sell. Call police while trying to de-escalate. If door actually gets kicked in…. Half a mag to the chest/face for all of them. Then call police again; then call lawyers.

limbless_Mountain@reddit (OP)

Widebody_lover@reddit
Is there somewhere you could stay whilst this blows over?
Gixxer1000k@reddit
Ahh yes, leave your home unattended while people are trying to kick the door in
Naive_Reach2007@reddit
Set up camera, try and identify them, ring 101 ask for neighborhood police to visit to advise on what to do.
You could also find out which school they go to and inform the head, this might get some action taken.
DaysyFields@reddit
Get a video doorbell and report them to the police.
PercentageNo3843@reddit
Find out where they live. Turn their water mains off in street and fill hole with cement.
Present-March-6089@reddit
I have an indoor camera pointed out a front window to act as a deterrent for antisocial behaviour.
commonmuck1@reddit
Go oldskool. Cup of piss over them out the window! Then call them pissy pants everytime you see them!
OneCheesecake1516@reddit
Call the police
londongas@reddit
Bear trap
DawgreenAgain@reddit
I boil the kettle and then the fun begins
CraigJSmith-Himself@reddit
Another vat full of boiling oil to throw off the parapet, m'lord?
JustNoGuy_@reddit
Find where they live and tell their parents and hope they're not assholes like their kids.
dixii_rekt@reddit
Their kids are out at 3am terrorising the neighbourhood...what do you think?
GhostWatcher007@reddit
We have bright motion sensor lights up beyond reach so they can't be messed with. They come on when anyone is within 10 feet of the house. We also have a dog in the front enclosed area that barks loudly.
Xenozip3371Alpha@reddit
Big knife.
Soukchai2012@reddit
keep a cauldron of boiling tar above your door with a tipping switch by your bedside. Thats what I would do.
MattDubh@reddit
Isn't that an attempted aggravated home invasion?
Surely the cops ought to be taking that sort of thing seriously.
Historically, boiling oil was a good deterrent.
