What are you paying for taxis where you are?

After my fourth train was cancelled (due to the heat), and my fifth Uber cancelled (including one who actually pulled up, and demanded we cancel the ride as he simply wouldn’t take us) it became an attractive option.

What's your experience with cheap plug-in solar panels?

The new ones you literally just plug it into a socket and electricity flows “in” to the circuit instead of “out”. No connection to the consumer unit (“fusebox”) is required.

Was I ripped off when purchasing these Anti-Reflection glasses?

Cheap glasses you buy on the internet are cheap for a reason, lenses are cheaper material so lower optical quality and won’t age as well, they will yellow and go cloudy. Quality of coatings varies too - cheap stuff is not as hard wearing. Frames that are cheap fall apart, nose pads fall off, hinge screws undo and disappear, plastics in contact with your skin age, delaminate, yellow, go brittle. If the IPD is wrong the glasses will not work well, or even give you migraines. If they need adjusting, or you don’t get on with them there’s nothing you can do online. Last pair I bought (thinned, varifocal, anti-reflective) were about £300. They did not feel right (one eye focussed well, the other did not). Zero hassle from vision express to re-make the for me.

I left school at 16, didn’t really find any work to do and just hung out at home doing a lot of nothing. Shortly after turning 17 my parents changed the locks on the door while I was out, and I had to find my own way in life. They “fixed the problem”, but I didn’t really speak to them for ten years and don’t have a good relationship with them still now, and this was 25 years ago. So depending on what outcome you want, this maybe and option to avoid.

Got a loan to pay for solar panels/batteries. Loan repayment was roughly equal to the loan amount, so no immediate savings, but now the loan is paid off and the savings are mine to keep. Also switch from petrol cars to EVs, was spending over £200 a month on petrol so a big saving there, and allowed us to use the cheap overnight rate with octopus, so yes set dishwasher and washing machine etc to run in that period, along with charging the car and house batteries.

Have you ever had an electric shock from mains?

I was upgrading the CPU in my PC, if memory serves it was going from a Pentium 75 to and AMD chip of some kind (K5 maybe?). Anyway, chip went in, turned it on to test before reassembling, and instant smoke. I grabbed the power switch, which wasn’t attached to the case at that point, so just a floating clicky thing. In order to push the clicky thing down I put my fingers at the back of the switch block, where, being an old AT power supply, the uninsulated spade terminals carrying 230v were. Shooting pain up my arm, I scream, and the friend helping me slowly and sarcastically turned off the mains at the wall. No memory of if the chip survived, defintely not long after that I upgraded to an ATX case/mobo.

So long as your extractor fans work (they should be in your bathrooms and kitchen) then no you don’t need a dehumidifier in a new build. You will however need to keep your heating on at a low level for a few months, as the building will be drying out still.

Solar Panels - are there actually any legit schemes to get help with the cost?

Posted by ANuggetEnthusiast@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 23 comments

flaninacupboard2@reddit

I’ve always assumed they are all not exactly scams, but the least efficient way of doing stuff. For starters, the biggest savings come when you combine batteries and panels. For me, I got a bank loan for mine, and the repayments over 5 years pretty much matched the savings. Now they’re all paid off I get to feel the benefit for hopefully another 20 years

How do I convince my parents to let me finish our holiday to Nigeria earlier so I can attend EY’s work experience?

Posted by Opening_Abroad_1384@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 190 comments

flaninacupboard2@reddit

The airport staff cannot compel you to board, so if your parents do not agree to amend the travel arrangements (and you’ve actually seen the flight booked for your return, and you believe you will still have your passport once you arrive in Nigeria) then become compliant. Pack your suitcase, say how much you’re looking forward to going, get excited. Then, at the airport after checking in and once you’re at the gate, tell the staff “I do not consent to boarding this flight, and I am being coerced.” Then tell your parents you’re not going, turn round and go home. If your parents become angry, aggressive, violent etc they’ll be arrested by airport police and learn a very effective lesson. I’m sure at that point they’ll promise to organise your early return once in Nigeria but that ship has sailed and you can’t trust that. You don’t mention your gender, but given your age, the importance implied, length of stay, and mystery around travel, you may also need to consider if this trip will result in a forced marriage.

If they can pay a higher salary they can pay more for a contractor. Ask for 50% more than you’re on now, the worst they can say is no. If they ask why, you can say you’re being asked to bear all the risk and walking away from a permanent role with good benefits and prospects, so the one year contract really needs to be attractive.

Yep working out great, panels and batteries, and two electric cars. 4 bed detached house with 4 people. In March I’ve bought 632kwh of electricity at 8p a unit (at night time, to fill the cars and house battery). I’ve exported 620kwh at 15p a unit. So, the power company owe me money. It’ll be like that until October now.

How to heat water in electric only flat?

Posted by AdFancy3904@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 94 comments

flaninacupboard2@reddit

If it doesn’t heat the house much then there’s not much heat loss, so not much additional heating required to replace the lost heat 👍🏻 I’ve got a 250L tank and the heater is often “on” all day (we have a solar setup). Once the tank is hot it clicks off and will check every 15 minutes if the temperature has dropped, it’s several hours before it will come back on and then only for a few minutes.

Heat loss from the cylinder will be 1-2kwh per day As I say in months where you would use the heating anyway this heat isn’t truly “lost” as it is just heat that won’t be required to come out of your radiators any more. Even if it was totally lost, the cost is fairly low for the certainty you’ll always have hot water available. OP will always be paying a lot for water and space heating in an all electric setup anyway.

flaninacupboard2@reddit

If it’s cold enough to have your heating on (which is also electric, and I’m assuming it’s not a ground source or air source heat pump, but just little electric heaters in each room?) then just leave the hot water heater on 24x7. The immersion heater has a thermostat so won’t get “too hot”, you’ll always have hot water when you need it, and the small amount of heat leakage from the cylinder will just reduce your usage of room heaters by the same amount.

£500k might be enough for a pension of £15k a year, even £723k is only going to be £22k. That won’t be enough to support me and partner even once mortgage free, assuming we want to stay in the same house, still have a car, and give some support to our kids.

For two adults earning £35k each while the grandparents look after the kids and getting full child benefit, £100k might sound like a lot, but a single income £100k household is really no better off, and in some scenarios (student loans etc) will be worse off. I’m not on £100k but not miles off, and I drive a Kia and buy Tesco own brand beans and soup.
