Buying an engagement ring, what do I need to know?

I was in almost exactly the same position as you last year. Long term relationship, didn’t want a high street chain ring, wanted something ethical, and had a rough budget in mind rather than a fixed number. A few things I learned that might help. First, don’t overthink the price. A cheaper ring that’s right will always beat a more expensive one that misses the mark. £2k–£3k is plenty for a beautiful lab diamond ring if you keep the design sensible, but equally £1.5k can go a long way if you prioritise the important bits. Second, shape and metal matter far more than most specs. Before you get lost in certificates and grades, try to work out what shape she likes and whether she prefers white gold, yellow gold, or platinum. Those two decisions narrow things down massively. If you’re not sure, quietly enlist a close friend or sibling. Third, lab diamonds are absolutely fine if sourced properly. The biggest difference visually is cut quality, not colour or clarity. A well cut lab diamond will look better than a bigger but poorly cut stone every time. Any reputable jeweller should be able to explain why a stone performs well, not just hand you a certificate. Fourth, think about everyday wear. Engagement rings look great in photos but she’ll be wearing it daily. Very high settings, ultra delicate pavé, or thin claws can be annoying or fragile if not designed properly. Ask how the ring is engineered, not just how it looks. Fifth, metal upkeep is worth knowing about. Platinum stays white and doesn’t need plating. White gold usually needs rhodium replating every so often. Yellow and rose gold are lower maintenance colour wise. None are wrong, it’s just preference and lifestyle. I ended up going with an independent Hatton Garden jeweller rather than a chain. No pressure, very practical advice, and they talked me out of a couple of things that would have looked good on Instagram but been annoying long term.
