[Sun column] Jeremy Clarkson: “Relaunch of Top Gear by BBC is great idea - but they face TWO huge problems”

I would revert back nearer to what it was when the 3 started on the show 20+ years ago. Actually review cars again, day-to-day ones in normal circumstances, with a bit of crazy on the side with some souped up cars and challenges like they used to do (like races on various different transports, etc, rather than the huge scale ones that take up the full episode).

Why are there so many diesel trains in the UK?

Posted by PodcastListener1234@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 224 comments

Toon1982@reddit

Yes but they don't have the money from the train ticket sales to put back into the infrastructure because the private companies are taking the money out. If both aspects of the rail, trains and network, were publicly owned you could invest the profits wherever they're needed

As the parents, with 16 technically still being a child, you should just cut off the Internet at 10pm. If he was playing quietly and his sleep/schoolwork wasn't affected and he was going to bed at 11/11:30 then I'd probably be ok with it (it wouldn't be great but there's bigger battles to fight). He 100% needs to be stopped at 10pm though and cutting off the Internet is the best way.

Yes it will get actioned, but at the very least if something does happen to you (e.g. someone tries to attack you) then it's already on file that you've had the threat. They may also take your address and step up patrols in the area (i.e. drive through a few times on their way to other places). They can look to prosecute if the threats meet the threshold for malicious communications.

Toon1982@reddit

You can question someone without arrest, so where possible charges will occur or if the offence is serious enough (I'd think it's probably the former as Nicola Sturgeon's husband was interviewed a number of times before his arrest for embezzlement) so the police must feel pretty confident there's enough to go on to at least explore charges, depending on what's said in the interview (i.e. whether there is any explanation or evidence to the contrary)

How do people actually survive on benefits or very low incomes in the UK these days?

Posted by acer67@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 835 comments

Toon1982@reddit

You don't lose pound for pound when you earn, you get 55% of your wages disregarded, so only 45% is taken into consideration for the UC calculation and reduced accordingly on that basis. Rent can be an issue if you are paying much more than your Local Housing Allowance (you can Google for the Direct.gov website that shows what your allowance would be based on how many excess bedrooms you have, which local authority you live in, etc). The Housing Element of UC goes by the Local Housing Allowance, but you can also get it for the interest only portion of your mortgage (and not any capital portion)

Do you leave your knife and fork in a certain way to suggest you’re done eating?

Posted by Seth4602@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 866 comments

Toon1982@reddit

If you're still eating you balance the knife and fork either side of the plate with the base touching the table (or lay them on each side of the plate pointing up if there isn't the room either side of the plate. When you're done you put the knife and fork together and leave them angled at around 4pm across the plate (with the ends hanging over the edge so the whole of the cutlery is not resting on the plate - that would be terrible)
