I'm a trucker and I vacation with a large 5th wheel. Using the truck islands is fine, bud. Just do what the truckers do. Fuel then pull ahead, so the next guy can fuel. Go inside, use the restroom, and grab your snacks. If you think you're going to be longer than about 10 min grab an actual parking spot. As far as rest areas I park on the auto side and take up car spaces that are usually vacant anyway. Never been bothered over there and it saves some poor sob a spot.

Self driving question

Posted by goblue48@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 18 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

Trains run on a rail, have no other traffic to deal with other than crossings, and no road conditions to worry about like snow and ice. Are they self driving? Have you seen the waymo cars cutting around traffic, running red lights, and getting in pile ups with other waymo cars? Do you know how regulated trucking is? We are held to a much higher standard than the average driver and are much more legally culpable. I practically have to log every time I take a shit. No, this industry won't go automated before you retire.

This farm right down the road from me runs a bunch of Freightliner cabovers and every morning I think about stopping to ask if they need drivers. I learned to drive in my dad's early 90s Freightliner Cabover.

Oh, it happens a few times a year. A lot of places have a pic of a truck hanging next to the lift controls with a sign saying to pay attention. I know firsthand that little white shack has one. I wonder if they'll replace it with this one now.

I used to work for this company that's Walsh trucking, they haul lumber residuals. Chips, sawdust, and shavings. You're supposed to back up to the tipper, open your end gate, disconnect from the trailer, and then lift the trailer. You leave the trailer resting on the fifth wheel and dont drop your landing gear. This guy didn't pull far enough forward and then didn't watch the trailer lift. He's a dumb ass. I've been doing this 2.5 years now and had the drives start lifting once, but I was fucking watching.

I called in sick 2 days last week, fucked myself for ot, but burned 20 hours in sick pay, and still took home just over $1300. 1300 for 3 days of work felt fucking great. I won't work unless I'm getting hourly pay anymore. The truck breaking down is the company's problem. A line to load/unload is the company's problem. Traffic jam is the company's problem. I get paid either way.

FNG here, can someone explain why this truck is built this way?

Posted by Bogey01@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 194 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

The coolness of a truck is primarily determined by two things. The number of axles it has and how hard it is to drive. See the long flat hood on this truck? It obstructs the view making it difficult to see traffic. Stretched frame making turning more than a slight bend on the interstate a nightmare. Overall a pretty fucking rad truck. Personally I think it could use one of those visors that blocks the top of the windshield so you can't see traffic lights but we all enjoy different things.

Elon has been saying full self driving is solved since 2015 and promising it every year since. He has what may as well be unlimited money to throw at the problem but Tesla can't get it working in a mid sized sedan. I like scifi. I like the idea of getting paid to ride in a self driving truck and just having to get out and unload it or change tires. But it's just scifi right now.

I used to run ag exempt a lot, and I don't miss the 18-20 hour days even a little bit. The bitch of it is that now I'm hourly now and with ot I make nearly the same in a 60h week vs 80-90h and sleeping in the truck.

Internationals suck

Posted by Alaskan_Tiger@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 43 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

I was driving an international auto mid winter. The road is just polished ice with a layer of fluff on it. Typical MN conditions. I was slowing down to make a turn, not even using brakes or Jake because I know it's slick. The truck drops down 2 gears instead of one, and it sends me into a skid. 105,000lbs, and the truck is at a 45-55 degree angle from the trailer. I'm kinda freaking out but counter steering and trying to get the drives to match road speed. Finally, I thought to hit the neutral button, and it pulled out of the skid. So I parked the truck and went home. Fuck internationals and fuck autos for anything but dry pavement. As a side note, internationals have shit for leg room, and I'm not super tall at 6'1.

That sounds really nice, man. I'm working 55ish hours a week and nights. I lay down for bed and get half an hour in bed with the wife, and then her alarm goes off. I see my kids for about an hour after school and before work. I keep thinking I'm burnt out on trucking, but it's probably just night shift.

I'm not stopping at that stop sign. It's the same concept as an intersection with a railroad next to it imo. I'm not going to stop where someone can run into my trailer. That being said, I can see how that might get me in trouble with a cop on a power trip or an anal safety department.

I've been driving a while now, and the last 4ish years, I've been short haul with frequent backing. 9 out of 10 times, yall would be proud of me. I'm good at my job. This is me that other time. Idk why. Maybe it's end of shift, and I'm tired. Maybe I'm just making excuses. Either way, I've completely lost the ability to back. Cut this poor dude some slack. We all start somewhere.

Why are both rear axles driven?

Posted by xXx-swag_xXx@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 48 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

You'd be surprised how often engaging that rear axle is necessary. A small amount of snow, ice, or mud. Hell, even just uneven ground. It does not take much to break traction on either side of one axle when you have 5-7 axles and 80- 105,000 lbs you're trying to drag around.

Yeah, I should have just let him hit me with the bat. This happened about 8 years ago, and it's hard to find housing still. I can't do things like chaperone, my kids' field trip. At least most of the trucking industry doesn't seem to give a damn so I can work. .. I don't tell them I hit someone with a vehicle, just that I have a felony assault.

It happened in a gas station parking lot. So, there was a video. A vehicle counts as a deadly weapon, which is an aggravating factor in assault. So, I was charged with 1st degree assault. I took a plea deal and got 2nd degree assault instead. I didn't do very much time and it wasn't too bad. Medium security prison was much better than any county jail I've been to.

As someone who went to prison for hitting a guy with my jeep who was charging at me with a baseball bat, I think it would heavily depend on the state you're in. Some states don't have self-defense laws, and some states do.

I'd be surprised if you haven't driven through a res and not noticed. Some authorities change, and there might be a casino, but it's not like there are border crossings. I can assure you that us tall, dark, and handsome native men aren't out to get you... well, no more than the usual. It's not the wild west or mad max. Powwows are open for everyone. Find a res and go to one. Lots of food and stupid trinkets to buy. Some traditional dress and dances. It's a pretty good time.

Automatic vs Manual Transmissions

Posted by Hoghaw@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 250 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

I've been stuck in autos for 2-3 years now, first internationals, now Mack's. I was on icey snow covered roads, and now I'm backing up a steep grade to a hard stop 4-5 times a shift. Give me a fucking manual. The part of the job that autos make easier isn't worth the part they fuck up. These autos are so dependent on everything working right that internationals' notorious wiring problems made them a hazard on the road. I was slowing to a stop and had one downshift hard enough to send me into a skid. 105,000lbs sliding sideways. Sure, I can switch modes and push a button on the ice to be safe, but that was 90% of the job. At that point, just give me the damn stick.

CDL $27/hr local job with abysmal miles? [New Driver]

Posted by Thepopethroway@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 42 comments

SneakyNative@reddit

I absolutely love getting paid to just sit in the truck. I love a good line or when a plant breaks down. Being asked to do busy work and then trying to pretend I had some duty to do would drive me fucking bonkers. I'd just straight up ask, "Am I allowed to just sit in the truck and entertain myself or nap?" If they said yes, I'd do just that. If not, I'd make it clear that acting busy doesn't work for me and tell them they need to schedule some tasks. Wth is dot verified milage? Dot doesn't have the slightest clue how many miles I drive. They could if they checked my logs, but they've only done that twice in 10 years. When an employer asks that, I just estimate my driven miles, and let's just say there's some room to round.

My father and I were talking about this recently. If I hit the lotto (I don't buy tickets), I would buy an old cab over, restore it, and make up excuses to run it places. Like buy a car across the country and go pick it up. Help friends move when they need to. Any excuse to get out there. My dad, who's been trucking for 30 years, says he'd never drive one again, lol

I relocated recently and had to find a new job. It took much longer than I thought it would. I kept getting crappy offers. $21/h get the hell out of here. Another company baited me in with a decent hourly, and after the interview told me, it was $15/h and 13% of the load. Some places had ads up for local, but when the recruiter called, they said those positions were filled, but they could offer regional work. After slightly over a month of indeed and follow-up calls to the companies, I finally found a decent job. This is with nearly 7 years trucking for a farm and 4 years since actually getting my cdl. No accidents or incidents, just a squeaky clean record. I think it's a tough job market. The last time I was looking for a job, I got bombarded with good offers.
