Whoever first thought this up doesn’t understand science/physics. Of course going across a scale slower won’t give a false reading. This reminds me of the old BS “If you take your break on the Turnpike, you owe the Turnpike Commission the FULL toll because of the amount of time you spent there.” 🙄

>This reminds me of the old BS “If you take your break on the Turnpike, you owe the Turnpike Commission the FULL toll because of the amount of time you spent there.” Depending on the toll road, and the length of your break, yeah it's actually true. For example if you run out of hours completely and are forced to do a 34 on the Ohio turnpike, they will charge you the full toll no matter where you came in or exit. Unlikely, but very possible. I had it happen to me a few years ago when I got really sick going across Ohio, and stayed on for like 27 hours because I couldn't get out of bed. >*All Ohio Turnpike travelers must complete their travel on the Ohio Turnpike within 24 hours. Failure to do so will result in a max fare toll charge upon exit.* [source](https://www.ohioturnpike.org/e-zpass/toll-rates) at the very bottom in the fine print.

Toll roads are scams. I wish the federal DOT would revoke Interstate status for all toll roads.

ItsMrAhole2u@reddit

Who's forcing you to use them? If you don't like them, pretty simple solution is stay off them. I use them all the time between Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, even around Houston and Kansas.

Apprehensive_Fault_5@reddit

Excuse they are the only practical option, and one funded by federal tax dollars (as evident by the existance of the blue shield).

ItsMrAhole2u@reddit

>one funded by federal tax dollars (as evident by the existance of the blue shield). You're aware that just because a road is classified as an interstate doesn't mean it is federally funded, correct? There's a few reasons why a toll road can be apart of the interstate system, but in almost every single case the road was privately funded and privately maintained using the tolls.
View on Reddit #13953902

Apprehensive_Fault_5@reddit

Yes, but that's where we come back to "I wish the federal DOT would revoke Interstate status..." If it is privately-maintained, it is legally a private road, so it should not be part of the Interstate Highway System.

Oh wow, didn’t know. By break I meant the standard 10. Good to know about the 34. Amazingly, I just did a 34 at Truckworld in OH, but actually considered doing it on the OH Turnpike. Glad I didn’t do it west, on the pike. 👍🏻

NomadTruckerOTR@reddit

Dang. I took my 34 once on the WV turnpike I wonder if ny company got charged a bonkers amount 🤣

>If anything, going faster may prevent the sensors from reading accurately ... And then you get pulled in for an accurate weight. Not that I think it makes a difference for actual weigh-in-motion setups. It does seem to make a difference on setups similar to 94 in Minnesota where you exit, weigh at 30mph, then either get the bypass or scale at full stop. If you come in even a little hot and hot 30 right as you cross the scale you'll get pulled in even with 5k+ leeway on your axles. Come in nice and easy, and you'll get a bypass with barely 1k.

Road pirates gotta pirate. Kansas is like that too, last time I took their toll road

Do they ever pull people passing weigh stations. My PrePass doesn’t work half the time so I just drive on by in the middle lane. I’m LTL so I’m never gonna be over.
View on Reddit #13835585

Apprehensive_Fault_5@reddit

The company I work at doesn't have transponders, so if the station is open I have to go in. I have passed a few due to either not noticing the exit in time, being stuck in another lane due to traffic, or not seeing the sign due to obstruction. I always just think to myself "oh well, if they wanted me to go in, they'll come pull me over". As far as I know, if something like this happens and you are honest with the officer and offer to go back even before they suggest it, and show them your CAT Scale ticket, they tend to let drivers go, or at most bring them back to weigh and let them go when their weights are legal. It is risky, though, as it does create some suspicion, and they may use that to decide to do a full inspection.
View on Reddit #13914881

meizhong@reddit (OP)

It's not only weight they look at. If your company's csa is down they might pull you in even empty. Or their doing random checks. Sometimes the pull in every truck just to see who doesn't go in and then pull them over for not going in while literally everyone else gets the green arrow.
View on Reddit #13838996

IBringTheHeat1@reddit

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get pulled over, the only time I’ve seen someone get pulled over was a box truck not going into an agriculture station. I just skip those too since I’m with UPS and they just give you a thumbs up when you roll by.
View on Reddit #13844980

DonBoy30@reddit

That’s right, you gotta go 30 mph over the speed limit to confuse the scale from being able to register your load

So many drivers slow down to 55 for a damn weigh in motion! Blows my mind
View on Reddit #13854971

FilthyNasty626@reddit

I had a damned Swift driver do that to me at EB Joliet scales. As soon as we cleared them I hopped out in the middle lane to get around his stupid ass. He speed ip, cut across my nose to do 55 in a 60. I jumped out back in the right lane, hammered down, and earned myself a warning for 6-10 over. I was doing 74 in a 60, trooper cut me a break because he saw exactly what happened. In 25 years of driving, that is the only warning or worse I have ever gotten. Frustration got the best of me day. Truly humbling experience….
View on Reddit #13853687

Frosty_Point7070@reddit

Same with dropping 10-20 mph under on the bypass lane. Sign clearly states to maintain x speed however some tend to believe you will get extra credit for slowing down. I’d be inclined to pull them in for not following directions 🤣🙄
View on Reddit #13830344

fordry@reddit

OMG this. The scale southbound south of Portland is so bad for this, inbound posted speed is 35 as is the bypass lane, people do 10 all the way through. Meanwhile there's a line out onto the freeway. It's so obnoxious and I'm just as annoyed at the DOT for setting it up poorly as the drivers who drive it bad.
View on Reddit #13847681

I generally get the bypass on weight alone so I’ve dealt with it too dang much. Have actually seen guys stop , get out and go in ..! I’m sorry I can’t understand that

Not personal use. Anything with a DOT number can potentially get pulled in.

If they can't get an accurate reading then that's when they'll pull you into the scale.
View on Reddit #13844410

Hypnowolfproductions@reddit

Each type scale has an accuracy rating. With the weigh in motion being a +/- 10%. Hit your brakes while on it you’ll appear about 10+% heavier.
View on Reddit #13843506

HelicopterFun4674@reddit

I've learned the scale in north interstate 81 in Virginia if you go over weight in motion speed limit over faster they usually let you go by and not pull you . If you go slower than weight in motion speed limit they generally pull in to scales. Sometimes faster is better. Other states you can't get away with that. Another secret is ohio scale by Indiana state line if you get behind a bunch of slow trucks they fill up scale and by time you get to it they close scale down and you drive on by. Ohio scales opening and closing it. You got to know how to time it. Indiana weight in motion its better to go exact speed limit. If you go to fast then they'll pull you in to weight it. I usually stay in Midwest so I learn little tricks about scales houses and when their open or closed. Illinois scales most of time have schedule when they open or closed.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, out on the highway. But in the case of weigh station signs, it clearly states MAINTAIN 45 MPH and 100 FEET APART. Not "speed limit 45" ...
View on Reddit #13816327

truckingham@reddit

Actually for weigh in motion they are calibrated to be most accurate *at* the posted speed
View on Reddit #13808475

ntice59@reddit

That’s the correct answer! I’m surprised there’s only one comment mentioning this lol. Theoretically doing 15 miles under would make you look heavier on the scale.

Also, when the sign says the station is in 2 miles we dont have to do 15 under the speed limit unless someone tries to pass either.
