What do you have in your lunch box for work?

Sushi - if you don't use raw fish and go 'eh good enough' for the rice, it's quick and cheap. I use packet rice (200g), 6g sugar, 15ml rice vinegar and 1tsp salt. Will make two rolls.

How do I stop my upstairs from getting way hotter than downstairs?

Are the hot water pipes in your airing cupboard insulated? If not, you could buy some cheap pipe insulation (looks like pool noodle foam) and fit it over the top. If you have a whole water cylinder in there, maybe it's worth trying to turn the boiler off and having cold baths etc.

On a groupchat someone was begging for money from everyone to buy food and I, a broke student, thought, oh the poor thing can't afford groceries. I gave up my anonymity to send this person a bit of money I couldn't really afford. A few minutes later they're debating in chat whether or not to get garlic doughballs with their pizza delivery. I felt so betrayed but I learnt my lesson.

I never bother unless they're old enough that the skin has dark patches. But then I rarely peel potatoes, carrots, etc My family peel the latter but never mushrooms.

Cultivate your best look of deranged mania, grin widely and go, "oh, no no no no no, you'll see, yeeeessss, the plans, the plans are coming together!" Give a satisfied mad chuckle and walk off rubbing your hands muttering, "you'll like it later, you'll all see! It'll be worth it later!"

This isn't as serious as the others on the thread, but having to give up lactose and then gluten and then oats. It's a major adjustment in planning and living and it's incredibly frustrating at times. Everything convenient to eat has at least one.

People should own few quality items rather than a huge amount of crappy quality tat. Clothes should be as high in quality as people are able to afford and should last generations. Same with kitchen appliances and other things. And, having said that, a high price should reflect a high quality, not just a roulette wheel of worth it versus massive rip off. You have to be a billionaire to buy anything with a guarantee of quality make. It isn't right.

What are the reasons British fetishize American accents but Americans think very unfavourably of British accents?

Posted by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 31 comments

RustyBucket4745@reddit

We see more American media so the accent doesn't sound as weird to us as ours to them. Saying that, I think it's just as common to think it nice as to malign it. American British stereotypes are often of classy, educated people.

Let the police know. My grandparents had this happen and spent all sorts on scams they fell for. I wasn't ever involved - just heard about it secondhand - but I think the police can keep an eye? They gave my grandparents a scam filter thing for their phone, anyway, and mught know about other options.

What rundown city/town do you think would become gentrified in 30 years?

Glasgow. It's a major city much, much cheaper than London. Newcastle is apparently gentrifying and Edinburgh is already gentrifying. Glasgow is probably next.

They weren't even around for very long! As a kid, I thought they drove out the Saxons and settled down for several hundred years but they mostly just seemed to come in and set fire to stuff!

Most of the earlier history gets taught in topics at primary school (aged 4-11). We did topics on the Celts, the Romans (we visited the local castle), the Vikings, the Normans, the Tudors, the Victorians and I'm sure several others I've forgotten. Probably the Saxons too, but not hugely in depth. Never any of the language. If you think about it, the Saxons came over from Saxony in Europe in off the top of my head like the 6th century AD or thereabouts - the original people of Britain were the Celts, who spoke a form of Gaelic and spread into Wales and Scotland after the Romans muscled their way in.

How to make Easter fun in a secular way when the house is in chaos?

Posted by wimsey_pimsey@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 36 comments

RustyBucket4745@reddit

Could you rent an airbnb for a day to have somewhere to be that's nice? Or do you have friends or relatives to visit? Maybe you could do a blindfolded egg hunt in a smaller space and take turns moving the eggs before the blindfolded person tries to find them. Maybe you could have a lazy Easter movie day with pick-at Easter themed foods and decorating eggs? You could make a blanket fort with a laptop if there's literally nowhere.

As a Brit, there's a certain class of laddish Brit that will come in wanting to drink, get rowdy and have sex and that's it. I don't blame foreigners for being very, very wary of these groups and stereotyping us based on them because they are loud, annoying and sometimes dangerous. Think 'Inbetweeners' but adults.

If you could travel back in time for one week, which period in the past would you choose and why?

Posted by imtiramisu2025@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 112 comments

RustyBucket4745@reddit

I'd love to visit the Medieval era - maybe 1200s? Just to walk in unspoilt forests (England had rainforests! A type of them, anyway) and enjoy the small villages and architecture. People are going to say I'd die of disease but come on, one week would be fine. I'd have a nice holiday in the middle of nowhere, then back to reality.

What should international students heading to York?

Posted by Karl9538@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 62 comments

RustyBucket4745@reddit

It doesn't actually rain that much in York. Just be prepared for the fact, when it does rain, it's often windy too and it might be too windy for an umbrella. Get used to wearing clothes with hoods if the rain bothers you but you don't need expensive gear. I have never noticed anyone else's shoe choices - just wear ones you like - but be aware the pavement (sidewalk) can get very slippy, especially the slabs near the Art Museum and King's Manor, so ones with good grip would be a good choice.

The AI Christmas coke advert. Any AI ad and I start to think the product's terrible - quality and morally - but a Christmas ad of all things, it was just especially awful. When I see a company use AI in adverts, I feel like I'm being condescended to.

I realised I didn't make time for things unless I had other people holding me accountable, so I joined an art group, and now I do art regularly, I joined a French course (which was fun but has finished now), and shelled out and got a personal trainer (not an option for everyone but more reasonable than you'd think) and now I actually go to the gym. I'm much happier now I actually go out and do things.
