How long do you sleep for?

Curious to know what time people go to bed? I work 8-4 and I go to bed at 9pmš I always am so tired, want to be a part of the 5am wake up club but curious if people get up at 5am when do you go to sleep?
Apprehensive-Shock80@reddit
11pm - 6:30am
qbnaith@reddit
I work 7-3.30 so I try to be in bed before 10, wake up at 5.30 to be ready in time to leave the house at 6.
elhazelenby@reddit
Usually sleep between midnight and 2am, and wake up between 9 and 10am so about 8-10hrs
HoGyMosh@reddit
11-6.30 but its not enough, I could do with an extra hour
However a 10pm bedtime feels puritanical
PoinkPoinkPoink@reddit
Bed at 9:30 ish, sleep at 10:30 ish, up between 5:30-6:30, no alarm but I start work at 9.
YiddoArmy@reddit
Bed by 10 and asleep for 10.30 - usually awake for 7am so a pretty solid routine. Doesn't matter what time I go to bed when out drinking as I'll be awake at the crack of dawn and feel like death. Would love the ability to sleep in!
dandotcomhacked69@reddit
5-6 hours typically. Less on weekends.
Work two jobs and have a 3 year old, so you can picture the rest.
I feel like I am missing what segment of the day is 'mine' if I go to sleep too early, and when I do try to go to bed at say 10pm, I am awake till at least 11.30 before noddyland calls. Weekends, I'll finish Work2 at say 2am, home and in bed by 3am then back up at 8am > day > kiddo to bed for 7pm, then out the door at 8pm to work and that is till 7am Sunday morning, which I'll be in bed for 8am-830am and sleep till 2pm, then it is up an at-them for the day... Rinse and repeat the week till death or lottery win.
YiddoArmy@reddit
Sorry mate this sounds rough. Here's hoping for better days

Work dodgy hours, get up at 6.45am for a 7.30am start until 9am. Go home for a bit until 11.30am, work again from 11.45am to 1.15pm. Home again til 3pm, work again from 3.30pm to 6pm. In bed for 11.30pm.

Does it get better honestly? My baby is almost 9 months and wakes up about 4-5 times a night and then is up for the day at 5:30-6am š¤£
Jacket-Aggravating@reddit
Oh hey me too! Exactly the same. Sometimes she blesses us with an 8am wake if she's been awake for a wee hour or two long party in the middle of the night. Not that the 3 year old lets me also get up at 8.
Agitated-Honeydew-41@reddit
My baby is now 9 and we have been enjoying nights of solid sleep and lie ins together and sheās my little bestie - but she was once a breastfeeding beastie and I didnāt sleep for longer than 2 hours at a time for over two years and she still woke in the night until she was 4 but at that point one or two wakes a night was nothing compared to the round the clock boob sessions.
You will get more sleep, I can vividly remember feeling like I was borderline hallucinating at times and wondering when and how life would ever change - I promise it does but you have to radically accept where youāre at first or youāre just constantly suffering more on top of the actual suffering. All my love and strength to you!
Fenpunx@reddit
My kids are 11 and 5. Still get up at around 0530 every morning.
Champagne_Bunnny@reddit
It definitely does. My baby didn't sleep through the night till he was 8, so I can almost guarantee that you won't have to wait that long. What you have to do is resit the urge (REALLY resist) to get all your jobs done while they are sleeping and instead, take a nap yourself. The housework will wait but your baby is only small for a short time. It feels like forever right now but in 12 or 13 years you'll be worrying that they sleep TOO much š I also managed by getting a baby carrier so I could bring my child on my front and then my back when he was older, to take a walk or do the washing or something.
Someone back then said that you can't fill everyone's cups if yours is half empty, so make your own rest a much higher priority than you are probably doing right now. Nurture yourself and you will nurture them much better. Your baby is happy to just be near you.

Have you tried melatonin? It doesnāt work for general insomnia but itās amazing for circadian rhythm āproblemsā (ie your body naturally is a night owl but society forces you to wake up at 7am). Itās quite difficult to get in the UK, but itās sold OTC in other countries (eg France) so you can just buy it on eBayĀ
gxb20@reddit
Just adding to this Kiwis are a very cheap way of getting a good amount of melatonin into you and also have vitamins and a couple of other āgood hormonesā

Elegant_Law_6463@reddit
I'd heard that you should only use Melatonin for a few days to get your sleep patterns sorted. Not for long term use, I would check before taking.
card1ne@reddit
itās prescription only in the UK right? How would you go about getting it prescribed? I canāt even get thru to the reception at my gp surgery
julialoveslush@reddit
I have it prescribed long term because Iām autistic and we donāt produce as much natural melatonin. Been on it for two years now and still works just as well.
gregd303@reddit
Yea it's a hormone , there's a reason why it's prescription only in the UK . It becomes ineffective after a while and then your body stops making the natural stuff because your system is flooded with it. Best not to mess with it.
julialoveslush@reddit
It would get seized if ordered from abroad, you need to ask for it to be prescribed
C4mbo01@reddit
Itās completely legal to buy and import and own in the uk, only illegal to sell without prescription.
Itās genuinely changed my life, I feel better, more energy, lost a lot of weight I couldnāt shift.
The change from 4-5 hours a night to averaging almost 8 and getting to sleep in minutes is incredible. I order mine from the eu and it gets delivered no problem. We are a rarity in having it controlled in the uk.
CatSlag@reddit
Have you got any links please? Ebay uk just lists melatonin-free sleep aids. How can get some? I'm old and crap with computers!

I generally sleep anywhere between 4 - 8 hours. Depends how stressed I am or if I needed a pee in the middle of the night. Generally I am very awake once I first wake up for eg a pee, so it's hard to go back to sleep. Being able to function on 4.5h is a blessing.
PauseMenuBlog@reddit
It's not - anyone can do it, it just really sucks. People who proclaim they function at 100% on 4 hours sleep have simply adjusted and forgotten what it feels like to be well rested.
shizzler@reddit
I think some people actually are well rested on 4h sleep but they're a very small minority (owing to a genetic mutation).

That's probably one of the best genetics in existence. It's correlated with all sorts of other superhuman stuff as well.

kanobbk@reddit
8?! Assuming you WFH?
fleapuppy@reddit
Not everybody works the same schedule as you
kanobbk@reddit
Can you show me where I claimed that they did?
fleapuppy@reddit
Why else would an 8am wake up time be so alarming to you, unless you were assuming a 9am work time?
kanobbk@reddit
Where is my suggested state of alarm? By using punctuation after the number 8?
Why are you creating strawmen arguments on a thread that you've had no prior interaction with?
LambonaHam@reddit
Literally yes. Do you think punctuation is just decorative? Why are you being so argumentative and hostile?
kanobbk@reddit
You're soft.
I wasn't the one who claimed that everyone has the same schedule as mine.
Let me break it down for you lobotomised lot in layman's terms:
"Do you wake up at 08:00am?! I'm assuming that's because you work from home?"
How's that?
LambonaHam@reddit
That's one hell of a projection given how upset you are at being called out.
The initial reply wasn't hostile or argumentative though? Either you're lying, or you misinterpreted it that way. This is looking like you're grasp of literacy is just poor.
Again you used "?!". That conveys shock, alarm, or surprise.
kanobbk@reddit
Your comprehension is lacking and you're cherry picking to fit your narrative. This all began because I was told that Not everyone has the same work schedule as you. To which I agree, but this is something that I never once stated.
Again, the irony.
Irony, again.
Surprise is not the same as alarm. Do yourself a favour and research the synonyms of surprise.
fleapuppy@reddit
Language and punctuation convey meaning. ā?!ā conveys a sense of shock and alarm.
kanobbk@reddit
A question mark quite literally denotes a question, not a state of alarm. The exclamation mark enhances the use of the question mark.
So I'll ask again, why are you creating strawmen arguments on a comment that you've had no prior interaction with?
fleapuppy@reddit
Do you know what a strawman is? It doesnāt apply here
kanobbk@reddit
Again, yes it does.
Your initial response was "Not everyone works the same schedule as you", a statement that is completely irrelevant and falsified as I never claimed that they did.
So again, why are you interacting with hostility on a comment that you've had no prior interaction with, when the comment in question is completely trivial and generic?
Is everything okay?
fleapuppy@reddit
Hostility?
It was a pretty innocuous thing to comment, as people do work different schedules and will have different morning alarms. Iām sorry if I came across as hostile, that wasnāt intended
kanobbk@reddit
Considering we've already discussed how important the correct language is, your initial response came across hostile and accusatory, as again, I never ever claimed that everyone works the same schedule as me.
Of course I'm aware that everyone has a different schedule, hence my original comment asking a question about OP's said schedule - "Assuming you WFH?"
fleapuppy@reddit
Honestly you need some slightly thicker skin if anything in this comment thread has felt hostile to you.
Someone disagreeing with you shouldnāt be taken as a mortal insult.
LambonaHam@reddit
This dude is insane. Either that or they're just a child spoiling for a fight to be 'edgy'.
kanobbk@reddit
You have special needs.
LambonaHam@reddit
Ableist, and no.
You made an assumption, and framed it as a question.
kanobbk@reddit
You mean I used a form of slang with my initial comment, while simultaneously asking a question, hence the use of a question mark? Followed by what's described as a loaded question or leading question.
The question is asked while implying that something is true, ie "I'm assuming you wake up at 08:00am because you work from home?"
Your recent activity on threads is just you arguing with people.
Are you well?
kanobbk@reddit
You didnāt show any signs of disagreement though, did you? You made a baseless comment about my own schedule and conflated it with OPās comment.
Thicker skin.. the irony.
Blind_Warthog@reddit
Iāve upvoted you but you are being a bit of a wanker. Chill out man.
LambonaHam@reddit
kanobbk@reddit
So emphasis, strong emotion, surprise or high volume. Not a state of alarm.

I have to get up at 5am most days for work. I wish it was to enjoy some exercise and chill while it's quiet but it's just rushing to get ready and do the commute. I've gradually got earlier and earlier regards trying to get to sleep and often start the downtime before 9pm, hoping to be asleep by 930pm. The way I see it, most regular people (9-5 people and school runs) get up 2 hours after me so my routine's like them trying to be asleep by 1130pm, which they'd be saying is really late. I'd like to get at least 8 hours but that's just not possible with my work hours. In an ideal world I'm definitely a 9 hours plus person given the chance. Sometimes I'll get in after 13 hours on a hospital ward and it'll already be 8 and half hours until I have to get up again. Instant wind down isn't possible. Not good!
I used to think I was more of a night owl type person but I'm really not sure anymore because I'm so tired all the time. I'm probably unhealthily working against my natural body clock.

If not going out then I like to get about 9 hours, 10pm-7:30am ish.
Weekends can be bed anywhere from 9pm to 6am the next day, then sleeping till whenever. It all really depends on what Iām up to that week. I donāt really care for set routines - it doesnāt work for me. Same goes for eating, gyming, reading, cooking, whatever. It all gets done on my time and I dislike feeling constrained by it.
Iām 28 though, so maybe this will change as I get older. Hangovers/lack of REM sleep have knock on effects much more now Iām getting older for sureā¦

Bed at 9, struggle to shut off until 12, wake up at 5.30 for work.
Big_Cheese16@reddit
I function perfectly fine on low sleep. Usually go to bed around midnight sometimes 1am and wake up at 5:30.
On the weekends I treat myself to around 6 and a half hours sleep.
If I have 8 hours sleep, I feel like shit. So tired like I'm still dreaming after I wake up.
JennyW93@reddit
I work 7-5, 4 days a week. Usually sleep 10-6. Last night I slept 10-3, which wasnāt ideal.
br0wn0ni0n@reddit
Work 8-4. Most days get to bed between 11 & midnight. Up at 6.
Not enough sleep, but by the time I get home, shower, cook and eat there is no way Iām going to sleep without at least a little bit of something enjoyable in my day. I will delay the end of every day as long as is possible, to prevent the start of yet another.
PNWest01@reddit
I need a solid, uninterrupted 9 hours to feel fully rested and energetic, but I never get that much. Not uninterrupted anyway. I can sleep in on the weekends but at my age thatās at least two wake-upās to pee.
RuaRuaRua81@reddit
Usually 10.30/11 and up for 6.30. Although, my phone died in the night last night, so woke up an hour late today and had to get ready for work in 10 minutes. Feel better for the extra hour and still made it to work on time though šŖš» Might start going to bed an hour earlier from now on, or just get up late š

I try to go to bed early 8:30 - 9pm, but my body just doesn't want to sleep. Tend to get to sleep between 10 to 12 instead. I wake up 4:30 - 5am depending on the shift I'm on. And I'm shattered but come evening, my body and brain won't sleep!

Roughly 7 hours feels like enough for me.
Iāll go to bed around 11pm or just after on weeknights(Sunday to Thursday), set the alarm for 6am, but sometimes Iāll snooze and remain in bed until 7.
Friday nights I might stay up until midnight or 1am if Iām watching a film or something. Wake up around 8 or 9am On Saturdays.
Saturday nights bed by 11pm but sometimes I canāt sleep until midnight, as I donāt feel tired enough, then I have to wake up at 5.30am on Sunday mornings for my part time job.
BigMasterDingDong@reddit
Not long enough. I probably average 6.5 hours, but Iāve been trying to hit 8+ hours and feel (and operate) so much better when I get enough sleep.
I read a book about sleep and really made my change my prioritisation of sleep. It can be difficult, but given some of us are chronically sleep deprived itās worth giving sleep the respect it deserves.
BalthazarOfTheOrions@reddit
Some monastic communities go to bed at 8pm and are up at 4-5pm and will spend the first couple of hours in church.
Or have children, they'll wake you up early enough.
I'm usually in bed between any time between 11pm and midnight and up earliest at 5.30am, latest 7am.
My smart watch clocks my nightly average at 4.5-5 hours per night. It's not at all ideal for me, but yay children. Can cope with little sleep, can't cope with interrupted sleep.
DrH1983@reddit
Approximately 6-8 hours most nights. I frequently wake up in the night too, sometimes to pee but more often it's just waking up for no reason. Sometimes wake up and can't get back to sleep.
Tend to go to bed about 10.30, 11.00 ish.
I tend to wake up and 7ish fairly consistently, I'm rarely actually woken up by my alarm as I wake up naturally.
Severe_Mastodon8072@reddit
At the moment ~8.5 hours on average.
Not consistent times though (aside from having to get up for work).

I have chronic insomnia and my sleep pattern is as follows.
Day 1 zero sleep Day 2 zero sleep Day 3 zero sleep Day 4 5 hours sleep.
Then the cycle starts again back to day 1.
Been like this for 14 years. The Drs recon its PTSD from my military days, but I don't feel it is but obviously there is something not right.
As you can imagine most days I feel awful.

My sleep pattern is fucked up anyway, but I generally go to bed at 8pm and wake at 4am. Sometimes I can doze off but quite often my mind's racing and I just do computing stuff in bed. I recently got a sleep tracker and most of my sleep is "light".
