Is there a British cultural equivalent of an ice cream on a sunny day for people without a sweet tooth?
Posted by girlsunderpressure@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 390 comments
My friend is becoming obsessed with going out to get an ice cream and sit in the park now that the weather is getting nice. I want to join in but I just don't have a sweet tooth... Is there something else that would still have that summery vibe?
Scoop of hummus in a cone with a stick of celery??? It's not the one.

Cone of chips
Omnissiah40K@reddit
Why do chips always hit harder out of a cone? Can anyone explain the science behind it.
Vequihellin@reddit
And also they objectively taste better when you eat them with those tiny wooden forks, too.
TobblyWobbly@reddit
What? No, fingers. Chips taste better when you eat them with your fingers.
Vequihellin@reddit
Are you sure about that? Because personally I reckon the little wooden forks are much better than fingers. The chips taste measurably better straight out of the paper with a little wooden stabby thing (I mean, 'fork' is a generous term tbh). Bonus flavour points if they're steaming hot and burn your mouth. Sitting on the seafront eating lava-temperature chips out of the paper with a wooden fork is core memory material.
Amphibiman@reddit
Maybe it’s the same thing with sandwiches cut into triangles?
bacon_cake@reddit
I reckon it's the scarcity. You savour them more because there's not that many of them.
Someone gives you a massive fuck off bag of chips and you just nom through them like a rodent. But a cone is more delectable, you take your time because it'll be over soon. I reckon there's also the issue of high turnover with cones, so you get fresher, crisper chips than you do at the chippy.
PrinceBert@reddit
The conical shape helps the smell of the salt and vinegar flow directly outwards towards your nose, amplifying the smell compounds.
Nah I just made that shit up.
Omnissiah40K@reddit

I just moved to Sheffield and twice I have ordered a cone of chips off a chippy menu and both places it has come in a bag or tub. What is going on here?
Ulfgeirr88@reddit
The 2 chippys in my town don't serve open cones anymore, either, I was disappointed when I found out
msully89@reddit
Sounds shite that. You're missing out on a wee shot of vinegar at the bottom of your cone to help you digest all the chips you just ate.

With respect, the ice cream from most vans is that awful sloppy chemical stuff… once you try a proper Cornish, clotted cream ice cream nothing else will ever do 😎
julemeister@reddit
Marshfield clotted cream ice cream is great too, had one yesterday in the sun.

Summer time food for me is usually pasta salads, cheese spread and cucumber/tomatoes sandwiches/wraps, pot of melon chunks, or i make some puff pastry swirls using either cheese spread, ham, spinach or just whatever you fancy
Past-Anything9789@reddit
You can get individually wrapped chicken skewers, or some of the little tapas type things to take with you. In terms of you getting something from the same place - have you ask if they have anything that is less sweet.
I know for me, I like the quite plain ice cream, the bubblegum type flavours do nothing for me. You could go for a rum and raisin, or mint choc as they arent as cloyingly sweet. Or see if they do a sorbet - still refreshing but less heavy than normal ice cream.

My initial thought for savoury on-the-go would be the picnic/picky bits from M&S etc, the mini sausage rolls and things.

igotinfo@reddit
She is looking for a snack but there are a million people saying beer or lemonade
MissKatbow@reddit
She didn't say snack in her original description though. Just a British cultural equivalent to have in a park on a sunny day, which I think a lot of people will reach for cold drinks.
Cal_PCGW@reddit
There are some artisan ice cream places that do savoury flavours, but it's not exactly normal so you'd have to hunt around for somewhere and make a special trip.
That aside, things like cucumber and gazpacho are cooling, but not ideal for eating in the park.

Princes_Slayer@reddit
I’m with you on this. I find iced coffee is sweet.
What about a flask of gazpacho haha
phatboi23@reddit
if you buy it from starbucks etc. maybe as they're milkshakes wishing they were coffee.
2 shots of espresso, bit of water and a heap of ice.
it'll keep you awake all day and be real coffee.
phatboi23@reddit
of you think milk and coffee is sweet your tastebuds are broken.
good coffee is bitter and will over power any milk.
also you don't have to have milk, as when i make iced coffee i don't.
straight coffee into a glass, heaps of ice.
BrowsingOnMaBreak@reddit
I think we woefully underestimated how sensitive you are to sweetness because milk is not sweet by itself to most people I feel
Katharinemaddison@reddit
If you find milk that sweet I take it anything fruit based is out. Or even tomatoes, they’re sweeter than milk I’d say.
I would say the traditional safety sunny day snack, at least at the seaside is chips, or for something cold, a tub of mixed sea food. But that is a sea side thing.
Min_sora@reddit
Milk isn't sweet. I think you've just used to drinking milkshakes and sugared milk drinks.

MissKatbow@reddit
One with bitter coffee maybe?
Contract-Spirit@reddit
You think coffee (with milk) is sweet?
ManicPixiRiotGrrrl@reddit
tell me you’ve never had good coffee before without telling me
pipedreamexplosion@reddit
The fact that an ice cream is food isn't the point. An ice cream or iced lolly in the park is about being out in the sun and fresh air. You can have an iced coffee, a soft drink or anything you want. If your parameters are; it must be food, it cannot be sweet, and it must be a British tradition then the answer is no.

I had a think, and I feel like there's not because of one historical factor: preservation.
Salty savoury foods are often preserved for year-round. Sweet fruits were historically only available in the summer. Apples and blackberries and stuff go into autumn and winter, but traditionally they were much sharper and less sweet.
Of course, preserves can also be sweet, but savoury food didn't generally have the same seasonal limitations as sweet fruits like cherries and strawberries, so summer treat food is generally sweet.
I could be absolutely talking out of my arse, though.

As in a traditional British one? I suppose a cucumber sorbet (I'm imagining that may have been an option for well-to-do Victorians), that wouldn't be sweet. Cone of chips is of course an institution, but if you're looking for something cold, well, scratch that unless you're a cold chip fan.

You can make your own ice lollies or slush puppies (you can buy bags to make them in) and take them with ice packs to keep them frozen. You can make alcohol ones or more savoury berry ones with no alcohol.
Or if you just don't like frozen, I do veggie and bread sticks with dip, cheese cubes and ham and soft cheese swirls that sort of things.
Educational-Angle717@reddit
Pint in a beer garden - why aren't others saying this.
ChelseaMourning@reddit
Just go to M&S and peruse the picky bits. They’re the kings of summer picnics.

A pint
yourefunny@reddit
A few years ago I would pop down to the park near work and have my lunch in the summer. Usually a sandwich, but I enjoyed these snacks with it:
Marie Rose dip with prawns.
Little pack of olives.
Veggies and dip... mainly humous.
Etc.
Often make smoked baba ghanoush on my BBQ and that is perfect for a snack. Cold from the fridge.
Have a look at what a big M&S has on offer in the small appetiser section.
I don't think anything REALLY compares close enough with an ice cream though.
liabilityno1@reddit
Quite honestly your own suggestion isnt a bad 1. Treat yourself to the fancy hummus! Get yourself proper dipping veg a handful of carrot celery pepper cucumber maybe even grab some crisps? Is there any other anti pasta you like? I love the small tomatoes with cheese. Olives? The mozzarella balls. Omg honestly i could go all day! Theres soooooooo much tasty picnic food you could be enjoying while theyre having an ice cream! Or have you considered spicy mango/fruit? Still sweet but the spiceyness balances it more?
A treat is defined by something you enjoy and dont get to have very often I believe, doesn't have to be fancy just has to be special for you! I hope you find a way to feel included regardless!

Beer-Milkshakes@reddit
Ahem. Custard creams are sweet for you?
Okay, supermalt and cardboard.
MissKatbow@reddit
She just told me milk is sweet in another comment, which yeah it has sugars but I don't think many would describe it as sweet. I think the tree bark is a good shout.
Beer-Milkshakes@reddit
They're arguing with me over custard creams now. Tree bark might be coasting too close to sweet for them. Maybe nettles and wild garlic
Katharinemaddison@reddit
To be fair to op, custard creams are sweet. Biscuits have a lot of sugar in them. The milk thing is a little unusual though.
egyptianspacedog@reddit
How could custard creams not be classed as sweet? They're pretty darn sweet even by biscuit standards.
girlsunderpressure@reddit (OP)
On what planet are custard creams savoury?
Beer-Milkshakes@reddit
They're biscuits. So whatever planet has biscuits called custard creams. Are we really pairing biscuits and ice cream in the same sweet category.
RBisoldandtired@reddit
They’re quite obviously sweet…
Next you’ll be telling us cookies aren’t sweet. Doughnuts aren’t sweet. Jam? SWEET?!
coffeexcoffeex91@reddit
Ummm biscuits are still on the sweet side of the scale... a custard cream isnt an icecream obv, but its not a cracker either
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
To be fair most people would consider biscuits as sweet
Beer-Milkshakes@reddit
Compared to ice cream
Dannypan@reddit
Yes. Custard creams are sweet. Over 25% of a custard cream is sugar.

Are frozen green grapes too sweet?
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
Not that I can think of. Perhaps take some fruit with you or veg, carrot sticks in a tupperware tub perhaps. Anything cold you like to eat that you could carry with you. My kid likes to eat plain ice cubes and crushed ice, you could try that.

Cold and savoury food? I mean… just take any savoury food like sausage rolls and stick them in the fridge and then a cool bag.
There’s no magic answer. If it’s food you want, savoury will usually be hot and certainly not cooling.
I don’t see why you can’t have something temperature neutral like sausage rolls and pair it with a cold drink which isn’t sweet. But from your other answers, you seem to think literally anything is too sweet.
