How to buy my first car?

Posted by Grand_Challenge5682@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 39 comments

RetroBoxRoom@reddit

Have you thought about the cost of tax and insurance as well? I ask because unless your family has a lot of land to drive around on, there’s no point getting a car to just to sit on the drive. I actually highly recommend against getting a car before you pass your test. The amount of people I’ve known over the years who’ve crashed their own car before even getting a license, or it took them ages to pass because of the bad habits non-tutors pass on, or they happen to have failed a few times because of nerves. They all wished they hadn’t wasted their money on a car before being ready, because they could have saved money and put it towards more lessons / tests or a slightly better car. I’m sure it’s worked out for many, but something I think you should put some thought to. Good luck with it all!

What’s the weirdest thing someone at work has taken in for lunch?

Using a tool within the workplace and having no knowledge on how to use it, and proceed to use it, deserves discipline. Especially when you do not take notice after the first time! As I mentioned in the original post, she put metal in the microwave again, at a later date(s) as well. BTW, it turned out she owned a microwave at home, but normally just used it to reheat a cup of coffee. So it goes to show she never read the manual. Are you saying you’ve never used a microwave, or never had one in your family home while growing up in the UK or you currently just don’t own one? That would be highly unusual since the 1980s. If so, fair enough. Also, have you never done GCSE Physics or GCSE Science, or GCSE Home Economics? You would have been warned about metal in a Microwave in those lessons, again from at least the late 1980s.

A woman once brought in baguette (about 6”), filled with a load of stuff. The sort of thing you’d be happy to put into a panini machine, squash and toast. It was all wrapped in tinfoil. Now work didn’t have a fancy panini machine, but it did have a microwave. She was the first to use the microwave that day. She had decided to squash her sandwich between two plates and put it into the microwave for 5 minutes. She went back to her work space to get her cup, she’d forgotten but got chatting with a colleague. You’ve guessed it, she’d put the whole lot in, tinfoil and all. She then stood outside with the rest of us for an hour and a half, while the fire brigade (which had been automatically called) did their job, wondering where the big black smoke was coming from. It wasn’t until the rumours got back to her that some idiot had put a sandwich in tinfoil, in the microwave, she twigged. Believe it or not, this was only the first time she put metal in a microwave over a few months. The Boss never did fire her…?

Has anyone ever had laughing gas at the dentist and what was it like?

RetroBoxRoom@reddit

I was a kid in the early 80s at the time. All I remember is counting backwards from 10, then waking up to two dental assistants tapping my hands and calling my name, and feeling groggy. They gave me some water to rinse my mouth out. Then I was sent home with my Mum. There was no tears. Far better than a different dentist who yanked out two baby teeth that weren’t falling out on their own, with no pain killers at all. Lots of tears then. It turned out he got fired from being a dentist some years later.

Let her turn up. If she’s like the way you say, she’ll have to do a life change or decide it’s not for her. Either way it’s a win in the long run for you. You can take pride in helping turning someone’s life around, or she sticks to the booze and doesn’t bother with yoga any more.

It’s a personal choice. In the long run, where avoidable, it’s most likely better not to be “ships in the night” in a loving marriage. Short term maybe, but I wouldn’t advise it for long term. Far too many couples end up drifting apart when they’re working opposite hours. It becomes a far to easy excuse to move on.

Your home is not a hotel and shouldn’t be treated as such. If he’s got a bed and/or a room to sleep on, he pays rent. If he’s chooses to sleep on it or not is his problem. If you were rolling in it, you wouldn’t have to charge sure. But for a working class lad, it’s about time he pulled his socks up and realised life isn’t cheap.

Don't have a private message on your voicemail, indicating your name. I've left mine as stock. When you answer the phone and say "Hello", and they reply with "Is that [yourname]?" don't just say, "Yes". Ask who they are first. If they say they're from a company you have no use for. Don't be polite, just hang up. Sign up to - https://www.tpsonline.org.uk/register Report the number to here using this website - https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/phishing-scams/ I send a text to the number they provide. I then block the number. On most modern phones there's settings to do this for you, so you don't even get the call in the first place. I'm lucky if I get spam call or text at all most years. The best thing you can do though, is just don't answer calls from numbers I don't have already stored. I also use - https://who-called.co.uk/ and report numbers there if I've a little time.

In higher education (Universities), there is an unwritten social contract known as the "Academic Grace Period." • The Logic: Professors are busy, and campuses are large. • The Tradition: Students often wait 10 minutes for an instructor, 15 minutes for a professor, and 20 minutes for a Dean. • The Reality: This isn't a legal right; it's just the point where students collectively decide the lecture isn't happening. Younger siblings or friends heard about this "rule" from university students and applied it to secondary schools where it definitely doesn't apply.

Do English people really say "bo'oh'o'wa'er" (bottle of water)?

Some do, some don't. It kinda depends on the area they're from, their background and their level of education. The gottal stop is very common. I find it annoying when an American will say, "Bo''le of wa'er", to try and be funny. But get annoyed when I ask the them to say, "Boot buttons are important' and it comes back as "Boo' bu''ens are impor'en'".

Do your research on what this and that costs compared to here. Just because it pays more, doesn't mean you get more. Always remember there's a difference between cost, value and worth. Simple stuff like the cost of a weekly shop vs where you live now. How much does it cost for the household bills? Don't forget where as we go more for heating over here, they need Aircon over there. So on and so on when it comes to travel / car prices, fuel, clothing, medical care, etc, etc. Make sure you've always got enough cash in a separate bank account to get a ticket back home and enough money to keep going for a month. (Build that up to 6 months later on). Not because you plan for the brown stuff to hit the fan, but you never know. Don't ever dip into it, and don't let anyone know about it. Not even any Sheila you settle down with out there. Build up to becoming a citizen as soon as possible. They like to kick us Brits back sometimes through no fault of the person. If that all seems fine - pack light, and wear plenty of sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Only come back when you stop smiling you lucky *bleep*. Good luck to you lad!

If you were going to work normally and your car failed, you'd have to had to pay for a taxi to get to work. Charge the company which ever cost more, and take it on the chin that your car needs its tyres kicked. It's not your company's fault that your car failed, that's your problem.
