How many have dropped Facebook? Did you drop Instagram too?

Posted by IntellectAndEnergy@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1978 comments

Randeth@reddit

Dropped FB ages ago (15 years ago, maybe?). Never started with IG or any other social media. Used Twitter for a while but dropped it too, long ago. The heady promises of early social media have all come to shit.

What book have you read recently that you loved?

Randeth@reddit

Winterset Hollow - Jonathan Durham It gets advertised as horror, and it is, but it read more like a literary novel. I absolutely got lost in the language. I found myself rereading passages, especially the poetry that was written "in universe" for it, over again and out loud. I just loved the sound and the feel of so many of his word and grammatical choices. But make no mistake, it is DARK.

I so wanted to get one that flipped sides for you but the one we got on sale was barely within our budget as newly married college students. 🙂

Randeth@reddit

Yeah we have those on Laserdisc. After the special editions released we used to watch them a lot more. Now the player and 30 or so discs are filed away in the closet. Need a convertor to hook up to a newer TV since it only had analog outputs.

We joined the Columbia House Laser Disc club and one we got on accident ended up to be great for surround sound. Backdraft. Freaked us out with the sounds of fire coming from behind us. 🙂

I still have my Laserdisc player and all my discs. The best ones were the Criterion Ghostbusters my friends all chipped in to get me for my birthday ($100 back in the day). Plus the first way to see the Aliens Special Edition. Also some great box sets from Disney. Tron, Toy Story, Fantasia. Great times. 🙂

Dixie cup dispenser - Did you have one?

We still do. We used it when the kids were little and it's just sort of stuck around for guest use. We refill it with generics from our local grocery store though.

What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)?

Posted by BigReception7685@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1110 comments

Randeth@reddit

First computer was an Apple II+ in 1980 or so. First computer with internet access was adding a modem to our PC to use BBSes and AOL in the mid 90s. We also were a test market for cable modems so got those pretty early too.

Remember when you actually got to talk to a doctor when you went to the doctor?

Posted by DramaticErraticism@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 723 comments

Randeth@reddit

I talk to my doctor every time I go. She gives me plenty of time to bring up whatever is bothering me. Maybe I'm just lucky. It is a single doctor practice with only a single nurse. Maybe that makes a difference.

This was me too. Just couldn't do it. Wish I could. For me my neck muscles ached from all the micro adjustments to find the sweet spot. And the mild nausea from the out of focus vision at the transitions.

Did you prefer and enjoy the 80s or 90s more?

80s for sure. But I'm an early GenX (1968) so that was my prime growing years. By the time the 90s got going I was already married and out of college.

Yep. I was 8. My mom's cousin worked at a movie theater and told her she should take us to see it. Was like the 2nd or 3rd weekend it was out.

If they actually got the Beatles version of that song for the theme that may be a factor in it being hard to find now. Music rights costs kept a lot of older shows in obscurity.

If it's not a common call, or it's a business. Say it once near the beginning, and once at the end so someone talking notes can double check.

Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. Which do you choose?

Even setting aside Mel Gibsons actions, Lethal Weapon the movie just doesn't hold up as well as Die Hard has over the years. Die Hard is still on the list of greatest action movies of all time.

Probably Pong. We had an early console called a Coleco Telstar Arcade that had triangular cartridges and a 3 sided design. Had pong paddles on one side, light gun on one, and steering wheel on the third. It was fantastic. 🙂

Do you miss magazines and/or print media?

Randeth@reddit

My biggest hobby is tabletop Role-playing Games. And I SOOOO miss all the magazines that used to be available. Filled with great new content. And ads that I actually wanted to read. Color or B&W. High quality or fanzines. I loved them. Loved getting them on the mail or back from the game store and just losing myself in them. There are some good digital / PDF ones now but not as many and they just lose something. /sigh

Which flavor of classic jelly beans is the best?

Posted by akagorilla@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 481 comments

Randeth@reddit

I was never a jellybean fan until Starburst Jelly Beans. OMG they are amazing. But I've decided the best and only way to eat them is one of each color at once. The taste is just perfect. So when I got back from Sam's with the big bucket of them I separated out each color, then put back the same amount of each one. The fam got the rest. So my personal bucket has an even number of each flavor to make my perfect taste. I'm a grown ass adult and I'll live my life my way. 🙂

My favorite use of these signs was when an Austin local burger place opened up they were named Hat Creek so just reused the existing frame with a new sign. 🙂 They've expanded now and don't use that anymore, but as a single location to save money starting up it was a great idea.

Who else would drink instant tea in the 80s?

Posted by TwistedMemories@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 428 comments

Randeth@reddit

We moved to the South in the late 70s and my Mom fully embraced the Sun Tea Culture. We never had instant tea, always a fresh batch of sun tea each morning. Too bad I hate the taste of tea in all it's forms. Would have made growing up in Iced Tea Country a lot easier. 🙂

Telephone Land Lines….

Randeth@reddit

I have one luddite friend that still has an old POTS copper wire land line that isn't VOIP. The same one he's had in his house for 35+ years. The providers keep trying to get him to "upgrade" but they're not allowed to force him to. Last time I asked he said it costs about 50% more than VOIP but he refuses to change. He even still has a rotary phone on it, paying extra to be able to. 🙂

Telephone Land Lines….

Posted by garcon-du-soleille@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 342 comments

Randeth@reddit

In the late 90s we lived in a suburb that was a test case location for many companies and technologies. We were the first ones to get cable modems and have "always on internet". It was a revolution. We had 2x land lines and 2x cell phones at that time. We wants to drop our land lines since we no longer needed them for internet. So we did a test for 2 months. We used our cell phones for every call. Back then we had limited minutes and texts remember and IM hadn't caught on with the masses yet. After 2 months we hadn't used all our minutes so we dropped both of our land lines. Our family thought we were nuts, but our techy friends understood (and wished they could get cable modems). We haven't had a land line since.

The first season had a nice dash of absurdity that they toned down starting in season 2. It was still fun and a better version of Ferris Bueller. But the first season is still my favorite.
