i remember really enjoying this show and how well the characters were developed, and grew, but especially the hard life issues they tackled like real people. i never hear about it and i know i didn’t make it up. does anyone else remember watching life goes on??
seigezunt@reddit
Where’s Corky?
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
i know i know it seems to many, this is “the corky show” and i opted for the non fam, non corky pic but i did go down memory lane looking at at them, i didn’t realize how 80s it was, i kept associating it with 90s and later seasons
seigezunt@reddit
OK now with this photo, it really unlocks the memory. I definitely remember the older sister and I absolutely remember Patti LuPone as the mom.
What a great show. It really went for the high drama sometimes
seigezunt@reddit
And the guy playing the dad was in everything at the time, but his name escapes me
Stormy_Wolf@reddit
We always watched it! Our family was interested because my younger sister was special needs and back then there really wasn't any positive representation of people like that. Even as an older teen at the time I was kinda interested to see how they portrayed things for the siblings. Everyone seems cognizant of how difficult things can be for the parents, but many don't consider siblings that much, if at all.
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
i was curious to know if anyone with a special needs family member watched this show and whether it was realistic or problematic for reasons i wouldn’t have picked up on. to me i respected that this was not a show centered around corky or his condition, it was an ensemble in which one character happened to have down syndrome and he really seemed pretty much like his siblings. i know it’s a spectrum but i really appreciated how the show cast that character but didn’t make his needs more than anyone else’s, but they were also sensitive to it. i’m glad you liked that show, thanks for sharing, i am really curious about people’s thoughts and opinions and kinda going through my own hazy memory of it.
TheJokersChild@reddit
I liked the authenticity of an actor who actually had Down's Syndrome IRL as opposed to a regular person who would mimic the condition and its symptoms. Hollywood still has problems with this. I imagine it would have been hard to cast a true autistic instead of Freddie Highmore for Good Doctor, but I think it could have been done, and I wish it would have.

I heard Corky was a lowkey nightmare to work with.

I haven't found a single thing to back that up online. Not a single article or interview. I looked hard, because I've always heard the complete opposite.

It's a cover of a Beatles song. It's "bra", but just a nonsense syllable, not the lingerie.

One of the first HIV-positive characters on TV, and one of the first Downs Syndrome main characters. It was a really good show.

Corky was my favorite. 🥰
GreyGhost878@reddit
Awww, he was great!
StrawberryKiss2559@reddit
I remember people telling me I looked like her (when she had the glasses). I hated it so much at the time but now, I’m like, Oh, she was cute!
humble_cyrus@reddit
I just googled this and didn't realize there was a character with Downs Syndrome? I don't remember that. There is a contemporary show, "This is Us" that kind of delves into sensitive themes. I watched the first season but I got side tracked. I may re-watch LGO. Seems timely for our times.
calbearlupe@reddit
You don’t remember Corky? He’s almost the only thing I remember about this show.
FullMetal_55@reddit
Didn't the guy in the photo also have AIDS? Those two things are the main things I remember about the show. Plotlines? I don't remember any, character names besides Becca and Corky, I don't remember any of them 😛
haileyskydiamonds@reddit
The character of Jesse was HIV+. The actor is Chad Lowe, Rob Lowe’s brother.
calbearlupe@reddit
That was definitely a storyline for the guy in the picture. I didn’t remember that but google did.
Independent_Wrap_321@reddit
I forgot about all the Corky jokes.

FickleVirgo@reddit
I never really watched this show, but assumed the downs syndrome character was the mc, because he was the only character a lot of people talked about, and I have no clue who these other characters nor actors are. Side note, having a downs syndrome character is not why I didn't watch it, I was and now have never been into the family centric tv dramas.
TheJokersChild@reddit
The mom was Patti LuPone, the Broadway diva who is not afraid to say things about her fellow thespians. Chris Burke, who played Corky, really did have Down's Syndrome.
And that's all of them singing O-Bla-Di-Bla-Da as the theme.
humble_cyrus@reddit
I didn't mind either way if there was a Downs character or not. I think that some of these shows do teach us things. I mean I was 15 years old when this came out and prolly never thought of a person with a disability like that.
LuckyMuckle@reddit
Corky!
Extra-Blackberry-984@reddit
Becca and Jesse. That storyline broke my heart.
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
this is what i remember, their yearning and romance and romeo and juliet feel, and who was that football kid she’d kind of grown up dating who still loved her??
Wild_Kitty_121@reddit
I don't remember his name but I liked the football player because he wasn't your stereotypical jock and was always nice to Becca and Corky. Becca spent most of the first season pining after him, they finally got together, and then within a few episodes Jesse was introduced and Becca fell for him instead. After that I stopped watching since the "star-crossed" lovers storyline swallowed the show.
The show's initial premise was a focus on Corky since he was special needs, but once Jesse was added everything revolved around his AIDS storyline. That may be why the show isn't watched much today. It's very much a reflection of its time and the understanding and treatment of AIDS has changed dramatically since then.
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
yes i remember really wondering whether she should pursue this new jesse kid, and i appreciated how nice they made that football guy, i feel like he was always good to her brother and not a stereotype and if anything you were left wondering if she wasn’t being a little cruel to him. i honestly can’t remember if i dropped off or stuck with it but i don’t at all remember the outcome.
nikidavid@reddit
The football guys name was Tyler and his brother had downs so that was the connection with Corky and how nice he was to him. Tyler passed away in a car accident. Tylers character was heartbroken about the fact that Becca chose Jesse over him and that led to the car accident (he had been drinking) Corky was also in the car with him. I just re watched this so its still pretty fresh in my mind lol.
GertieMcC@reddit

Adventurous_Ad1922@reddit
Great show and theme song!
chdude3@reddit
The Beatles?
Randeth@reddit
If they actually got the Beatles version of that song for the theme that may be a factor in it being hard to find now. Music rights costs kept a lot of older shows in obscurity.
raendrop@reddit
No, the cast sang their own cover version. Fun fact: Patti LuPone was a Broadway and West End musical star.
Reboot-Glitchspark@reddit
They still have to pay for the rights to it though, so like a lot of shows they made a new theme song for the DVD release.
Randeth@reddit
That's very cool.
Adventurous_Ad1922@reddit
Yes but it was their own version
chdude3@reddit
Sure, but IIRC it hewed close to the original - as opposed to, say, what the show The Wonder Years used with Cocker's cover of A Little Help From My Friends.

Corky and Becca’s parents opens a sandwich shop.
Corky tells everyone at high school to come by and he’ll give them a free soda.
Dozens of students show up saying that Corky promised them a free soda.
Corky’s dad is annoyed then starts to get upset with Corky, until he realizes that all the kids showing up for free sodas start buying sandwiches.
Corky’s dad then announces that all high school students get free sodas at his sandwich shop.

Good show, bad time slot (Sundays at 7 p.m. EST. Why it wasn’t shown at 8 or 9 p.m. is beyond me). I missed some episodes as a result. I actually found the Jesse character a little annoying but I like Chad Lowe.
Repulsive-Friend-619@reddit
I’d totally forgotten this: I was on some store on melrose years ago, Hillary Swank was trying on clothes (she never came out of the dressing room). Chad and I were chatting, and it turned out we both had the same kind of bunnies. We talked about bunnies for at least a half hour.

They look like siblings. Didn’t the two actors later appear as love interests on ER? I’m certain they both were on ER; I just can’t remember if I made it up in my head that they were love interests. Even as adults, they looked like siblings. Anyway, I remember watching Life Goes On a little, but I think it was because I was bored and it was the most interesting thing I could find during the hour it aired. It was alright. I appreciated Corky.

Loved this show so much. I had a mad crush on Jesse. His character on the show loved the blues so it inspired me to start listening the the blues more often (and I became a huge fan of this style music).
It also really educated me on HIV, something that was really being more recognized through media at time and I became a huge advocate on raising awareness against the stigma people with HIV/AIDS went through.
I was 13/14 at the time and the only person my age who seemed to think this was important.
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
same same, i love that. my smart intellectual outwardly kind fam would not discuss anything of substance of actually provide guidance or support and info on anything so i think i sought out knowledge and info everywhere and anywhere in my youth and i went down ryan white and keith haring rabbit holes and am still drawn to social justice and ending of stigmas and false narratives. love your name, im leaning into cheesy and romance and kindness and love and all of it.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
Thank you so much 😊
Yes, I understand that.
My parents have always been quite open minded and conscious of social issues. It is something that should just be a given, but they grew up in very discriminatory time. So even though they always supported marginalized communities they never really spoke about them. They just accepted everyone without discussing things, thinking it was a way to show they do accept everyone by not drawing attention to them? If that makes sense?
Kind-Shallot3603@reddit

Huh, never even heard of it. Must have been watching something else or going out when this was on. I remember Northern Exposure ads but don’t think I ever watched that one either.
UraTargetMarket@reddit
I loved Northern Exposure in high school! I especially loved Adam Arkin’s character. But I love Adam Arkin. I picked up the DVD set from a thrift store recently. I haven’t watched it yet mostly because my family has no interest and we purposefully have only one TV. I often wonder if the show would hit the same.
DcubedWY@reddit
Sometimes a show is still good, even after decades. Try it when you are alone in the house sometime. Or see if you can find some free episodes on the internet you can watch with your phone or computer.
UraTargetMarket@reddit
I shall do this! I also found an unopened series set of Magnum PI at a thrift store. It got a similar reception from the family. Now Tom Selleck’s moustache stares at us from the DVD shelf when we hang out in the living room.
DcubedWY@reddit
Wow, lucky! I love Magnum! I should look to see how expensive the series is. My hubby and I watch DVDs over anything else (no ads!), and are acquiring the series we like.

No. I DEFINITELY mean John Corbett. IMO, he didn’t age well. And I SPECIFICALLY identified a recent show he was on. But thanks for suggesting I’m an idiot who can’t tell the difference between these two men. Rob Morrow was NOT on And Just Like That, as I mentioned earlier, John Corbett was.

i’m so scared…he looked okay in that, my brain remembers, i’m going to look 🫣

He's aged. Like people do. I don't think he looks particularly bad, and certainly prefer his choice to age naturally to the people who amend their faces. His real life partner Bo Derek doesn't seem to mind.

Well, don’t be — people’s opinions vary. Just because I don’t find him attractive any more doesn’t mean you’ll be disappointed.

I loved this show!! She (Becky?) Was so annoying! Her brother was a riot lol
LisaMiaSisu@reddit
Not Becky. It was Becca. I know because we named our daughter after the character after we heard Becca was a nickname for Rebecca. So many older people always called her Becky even though we’ve never called her Becky.

I remember the song on the radio, but I was out of highschool for like 3 years before the series came out and I don't remember ever watching it, I had to look it up on Wikipedia

I watched this one religiously!! And it was because they tackled the hard topics, things we as teens talked about at school but our parents and teachers wouldn't.
NotAnotherThing@reddit
Yes! I felt so apart of it and was learning something.

I loved this show. I forgot how gd good Chad Lowe is as an actor until he did a stint on 911-Lone Star.

i should look that up. he blew me away in that role and i was like pretty boy rob has a soulful hot little brother??? im glad to know he didn’t totally disappear, he was good.

I remember it, I hated it. Kelly Martin is an awful actress
blondeinabubble@reddit (OP)
see this is why i’m curious about my own memory and this show! i’m like it did seem kind of cheesy at times and now you never see any of those actors…??? i’m open to this opinion for sure.

OMG this was my favorite show when I was a preteen. I had such a huge crush on Jesse. Kids at school would compare me to Becca because we had the same haircut.

I remember Corky

I remember this! I remember it was too sentimental for me (kinda like This is Us) and I didn't stick with it, but it had its good points

Why is this not streaming somewhere????? Loved this show.
