Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. Which do you choose?
Posted by -Granby-@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 304 comments
Lethal Weapon came out in 87. Die hard in 88. I was thinking about this last night and I still can't decide which one I would pick. First movie or the entire franchise.
Die Hard definitely has more action and McClane has definitely killed more people than Riggs and Murtaugh. Plus Alan Rickman.
I like the buddy cop aspect of The Lethal Weapons and I think one on one Riggs beats McClane's ass. Riggs is an ex special forces dude and he is batshit. McClane is a detective but he is tough as shit.
Which one of the movies/series do you choose.
tomnan24@reddit
Loved both. Die Hard in a class with no other members.
kapshus@reddit
Two great lead performances (give Mel the slight nod for his crazy eyes), but Hans is an all time great villain. Mr Joshua is almost a caricature. Give me Die Hard 8 days a week.
itgoesineasy@reddit
Tough choice…. I agree, Die Hard is a timeless classic. Lethal Weapon is very dated.
Sad-Signature-5491@reddit
Die Hard. John McClane was the original Lethal Weapon.
JustAskingSoSTFU@reddit
Oh, you did.

Die Hard. John McClane was the original Lethal Weapon.

You can say that again.

Die Hard. Love them both, but Nel Gibson ended up being a horrible human being.
JulesChenier@reddit
Lethal weapon was an 80's movie.
Die Hard is an any Decade movie.
Simple-Ingenuity740@reddit
wow, which of your children do you like best?
Die Hard is a Christmas movie, and Lethal Weapon is the movie for the rest of the year.
GrandMoffJerjerrod@reddit
They are both great but having to choose, I choose Die Hard. Because John McClane is not a ‘super cop’, he is kind of an average guy, almost a loser, who is in extra ordinary circumstances and honestly survives due to a lot of luck and comes out much worse for wear. He was kind of a NYPD version of Murtaugh as in he was too old for this shit, even if he was not old yet.
Sure Martin Riggs gets messed up too, but on the other hand he is a heavily trained special forces soldier with lots of combat experience as well as martial arts, combat, and weapons training.
Both are great characters though. And what a crazy movie would it have been if McLane had been sent to L.A. with some other NYPD cops to escort somebody who escapes into L.A. and he ends up with Riggs and Murtaugh.
Icy-Illustrator-1431@reddit
Die Hard by a nose .. the ending of Lethal Weapon with Gibson and Busey fighting was idiotic

These movies are completely different. LW is about partnership and DH is about "I'll do all by myself".

Die Hard. It’s just too good. It defined action movies for a while and spawned many imitators. Lethal Weapon is great but just doesn’t quite reach the heights of Die Hard for me.

I think Die Hard was a better movie, but Lethal Weapon is a better series.
The Die Hard movies eventually started going downhill but the Lethal Weapon ones remained relatively consistent.
syringistic@reddit
Die Hard 5 was just a.cash grab. I am pretty sure Bruce was already showing signs of being sick, and wanted to pump out some easy movies so his family will be well off.
But the 4th one wasn't all that bad.
IndependenceMean8774@reddit
Die Hard.
It's better written by Steven de Souza and Jeb Stuart and better directed/filmed by John McTiernan and his crew. It was like an American doing a European action film and doing it one better. Some of the shots like McClane jumping off the exploding roof are so well shot and iconic you could hang them on a wall as a painting.
Richard Donner was a good director, but nothing in Lethal Weapon was filmed with that much panache.
syringistic@reddit
I think Die Hard movies aged much better.

Die Hard, if only for the presence of Alan Rickman.

Sfingi48@reddit
You MUST choose. Um. No. Both have special places in the heart, for different reasons. If you actually lived in then 89’s, you’ll understand.
What’s the one thing in common about both? By third “must see” film, we didn’t have to see.
The takeaway? “I’m too old for this shit!”
Phobos1982@reddit
Die Hard for sure. The first LW was kinda dark. LW 2 is probably my fave of the franchise.

I love Shane Black scripts, Lethal Weapon introduced BJJ to the world and Gibson’s death wish anarchy was still fresh back then.
All that aside, Alan Rickman’s first big screen role is Die Hard and he kills it. The pace is great and it’s just so Christmassy.
Die Hard by a whisker.
DadBodZawa@reddit
~~whisker~~ You spelled mile wrong.😁
ropeynick@reddit
Haha!
-Granby-@reddit (OP)
That's part of the reason I love Lethal Weapon so much. It came out in 87 and Rorion Gracie was the fight choreographer. We were watching jiu jitsu like 5 years before UFC 1. Riggs caught Mr Joshua in a triangle choke. It was great.
ropeynick@reddit
I mean, it was a terrible triangle but yeah, I saw that there were other ways to fight than slugging and it was life altering.
Rorion did more in that period when he went to Torrance than Royce or Rickson did in their fighting careers. The whole reason we have MMA now is down to him.
-Granby-@reddit (OP)
We didn't know it was a terrible triangle in 1987 though. We just knew it was some different shit.
Side tangent. I was thinking the other day that Rorion might be the most important/influential person in martial arts history. I mean he created the UFC and look what it has become. It is a multi billion dollar company. He created a new sport. Look how many millionaires exist now because of Rorion. Not just people like Dana(billionaire I know) and the top of the top fighters but people like Eddie Bravo. Has his own jiu jitsu association(10th Planet). He has like 75 of them. He is just one of many. Then there are the people who are not millionaires but they have their own schools and associations. All that is because of Rorion.
EBI. ADCC. UFC. CJI. Grapplers Quest. Submission Underground and so many more.
It's fucking crazy to think about. Of course jiu jitsu was around and then bjj in Brazil going back to the early 1900's. Helio and his lineage. It was not until Rorion that it changed the world.
I best people will still argue that Bruce Lee is the most important/influential figure in martial arts but I think it is Rorion hands down.
Celtic159@reddit
Lethal Weapon is perfect. Die Hard is as well. Both fantastic '80s action films. I lean towards Lethal Weapon because the chemistry between Mel and Danny Glover was so good.
OG Die Hard vs OG Lethal Weapon is a wash. LW2 is better than DH2. DH3 is better than LW3. LW4 is better than DH4.
Own_Ad6797@reddit
Both Christmas movies but one is a pure action film and the other a buddy cop film so different in many ways.
I would say Lethal Weapon is one of the best buddy cop films while Die Hard set the bar for action films.
-NachoBorracho-@reddit

Lethal Weapon is an enjoyable movie (mainly because of Shane Black’s dialogue), but Die Hard is simply a great film; close to perfection.

IIRC, each lead was offered the opposite role but couldn't/didn't take it - would have been oddly different films had that been the case.
And Die Hard every damn day for me.
ropeynick@reddit
Imagine if Frank Sinatra had exercised his option on Die Hard though.
tunaman808@reddit
Die Hard is a far better movie, but Lethal Weapon was a better franchise. I honestly barely remember the last couple Die Hard films.
ropeynick@reddit
You remember Lethal Weapon 4?
I just looked it up and Chris Rock and Jet Li are in it. I had no idea and I very much grew up in that era and definitely watched it.
I admit I don’t remember Die Hard 4 either ( I assume there was one).
Sticky_Gervais@reddit
Die Hard is in a totally different league to Lethal Weapon. It's not even close.

Lethal Weapon is fun, but Die Hard is a much much better movie.

Also, fuck Mel Gibson
Revolutionary_Cry884@reddit
Both two of the BEST action movies ever made and individually have their own merits. Both have standout performances, with actors in a real prime of charisma and presence. They are annual watches for me at Christmas but Diehard takes the cake.

Mel Gibson is cancelled in this house.
Die Hard by default.
CNote_89@reddit
SlyFrog@reddit
It's Die Hard, because of Alan Rickman.
I'm putting aside Mel Gibson's nuttiness, because it has nothing to do with the movies. I'd take Bruce Willis over Gibson by a nose if forced to choose, but it's close.
But there's not comparison between Rickman and Gary Busey, and I have literally forgotten the non-Gary Busey villain in Lethal Weapon.
7eregrine@reddit
Lethal Weapon.
Die Hard 1 was gold. The rest ...not so much. LW1 was good. 2 was BETTER.
CromulentPoint@reddit
And LW3 was super fun. Still, of the 4, Die Hard is the best in my opinion.
7eregrine@reddit
All these movies combined, LW2 is my favorite. I'll never forget the first time I saw it. Wasn't in the theater. My best friend had just put together a $1500 Surround sound system. The opening sequence of LW2 in Surround Sound was so ridiculously well done.... We must have played those opening 5 minutes 10 times. 😆 (Ps... It still holds up...).
To this day my buddy and I will occasionally throw out a .... "Diplomatic immunity!! ” 😆
It's just been revoked. https://youtu.be/ORyoYxbobOI?si=muz-6vb_ueX8es2y

That's still a rough one. Both sequels are great. Die hard 3 is better than Lethal Weapon 3 though.
Live Free or Die Hard and Lethal Weapon 4 are neck and neck. A Good Day to Die Hard is just lame. I don't like Jai Courtney.
I guess if I really had to make a choice I would go with Die Hard even though I like the character of Riggs better.

Icky-Tree-Branch@reddit
Lethal Weapon. Though nothing in either franchise stacks up to Die Hard with a Vengeance. Samuel L. Jackson makes everything better. Plus the whole “doing things with a bad f*cking headache” angle (I have chronic migraines that are finally managed) and the psycho blond killer girlfriend that moves through the film like walking porn, even when she’s murdering well beyond the point of overkill.

Fun fact: The studio resented having to pay Bruce Willis $5 million after nearly every male lead in Hollywood turned it down.
The test screening poster didn't include him and originally the studio didn't want him to appear on it at all.
They wanted to get it out for the holiday release window and hoped to simply recoup the production cost and bury it, but the audience loved it during the screenings and Bruce was added to the poster... The rest is history.

Loved the story in Lethal Weapon with him losing his wife. And struggling with going on. Great movie. Haven’t watched it in years. Die Hard is in my yearly rotation. As near perfect of a movie as you could get.

Die Hard.

It's been our first Christmas movie of the season for ages. Timeless, entertaining, and one of the truly great action movies. Lethal Weapon is good, Die Hard is perfect.

Die hard. I liked lethal weapon then Gibson had his outbursts and I can't look at it the same way

Die hard

Die Hard. Lethal Weapon is highly overrated and Mel Gibson is a prick
SergeantChic@reddit
Easily Die Hard. Only the first one though.
Other-Crazy@reddit
Right! Outside!
Only the second one though.

I like Lethal Weapon, it's near the peak of 80's action movies. Die Hard IS the peak of 80's action movies (Indiana Jones excepted.)

Lethal Weapon is great, but Die Hard is one of the greatest action films of all time.

My thoughts exactly. These are not really the same level.

Both. Ok, Die Hard, dammit

Die Hard, easy. Gibson turned out to be a loser.
bene_gesserit_mitch@reddit
Why can't we have both?

Yes

Die Hard. EASY CHOICE.

Why Die Hard?
attaboy_stampy@reddit
It's just utterly rewatchable. It's fast, it 's catchy. It holds up.
Lethal Weapon is fine and pretty good, just not as rewatchable to me.
Double_Fisherman6817@reddit
Agree. Also, it’s aged better than Lethal Weapon.
gbr1976@reddit
Both are part of my Christmas movie viewing.
-Granby-@reddit (OP)
Yes!
it's these Two and Christmas Vacation from our younger days with a splash of Bad Santa thrown in. Every year.
gbr1976@reddit
Same! Christmas Vacation and Bad Santa are always on the Christmas viewing list.
