I can’t talk about “recently” as I’m over 50.  But since the pandemic, if you make plans with someone “yes” = “maybe”, “maybe” = “no” and “no” = “f*** you for even asking”

As someone who is in the same situation. The idea that you are required to earn a living even if it makes you ill, suggests that living isn’t something you deserve. Illness is not a moral failing, but a tragedy you should be helped through by the kindness of others.

Calling people who come to the UK to live “immigrants” and calling people go to live elsewhere “expats” is differentiating based on race.  The Venn diagram of Xenophobia and Racism is very nearly a circle.

We taught our child to read an analogue clock but we don't have a single one in our house aside from my partner's wrist watch. We don't see one anywhere we go out. There aren't any in the school. They can no longer read an analogue clock that has no numbers because they haven't had to since I thought them when they were 5. There just aren't any about.

A lot of people just realise they are living seperate lives but in the same house. A lot of people gain the courage to leave an abusive relationship. A lot of people are "empty nesters" where the children leave home so they have no reason to stay together. A lot of people reach the point where they leave because they can and for any of the above reasons.

Construction folks in UK: are all the green regulations actually affecting material procurement yet?

Posted by jetsonjetearth@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

Psimo-@reddit

I'll provide a performance specification, and as part of that specification I will require the manufacturer to be able to provide the required information. My specification will always be "This make and model, or approved alternative" So, document collection is part my job - I'm required to ensure what I specify meets the requirements of the Developer/Architect/Whoever I'm contracted by. However, if the contractor or procurement team don't use my specification then that's entirely on them. BREEAM compliance is a big thing, and large scale building will not only need to comply but *show* compliance. So, as I said, from my little part of the industry we are deep into sustainability from Concept Design onwards. Other parts are as well, but I don't have deep knowledge of that.

Construction folks in UK: are all the green regulations actually affecting material procurement yet?

Posted by jetsonjetearth@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

Psimo-@reddit

Within my limited part of construction - Lighting Design - we are regularly asked for things such as life cycle assesments (LCA), enviromental product declarations (EPD), compliance with BREEAM and ensuring that we hit net zero carbon targets. [As an example, here is Stoane Lighting's sustainability page](https://www.stoanelighting.com/sustainability/assessment-and-reporting/lca-and-epd) So, from where I stand, it's in virtually every building larger than a single dwelling.

If someone told their GP about psychotic symptoms, would they be sectioned?

Posted by unklebzzrk@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

Psimo-@reddit

Maybe, but if they are willing to be treated then probably not. The secret is that doctors *hate* sectioning people. It comes with huge amounts of paper work both to get someone into hospital and out of it. Psychiatric wards are always full, and cost a fortune to run. They want both to treat people at home, or - if they need hospital treatment - be voluntary patients. If they aren't a danger, and aren't in danger they can't be sectioned - although the judgement on that is decided by others. I was in hospital a last year as a voluntary patient, and my final meeting with the Psychiatrist went "We feel it's safe for you to go home, do you feel safe?" "Yes" "Well, good" and then I left. When I had been sectioned it took the best part of a week for me to be able to leave just from paperwork.

Why does it take the council 10 weeks to replace traffic lights?

Posted by Scr1mmyBingus@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 11 comments

Psimo-@reddit

Manufactures don’t keep many traffic lights in stock, storage is expensive  As such they are mostly built to order, 6-8 weeks from order to delivery. The a couple of weeks to arrange, timetable and install. The roadworks are to identify the power and data cables. Identify and trace them, plan how to splice in without damaging existing infrastructure, do the work, re-tarmac.  You put up the roadwork barriers because people working in the road need them or the get hit (it’s why there is such a large gap between the barriers and roadworks on motorways). Then you need to ensure that your engineers etc. are employed 100% of the time so that you aren’t wasting money. It takes 10 weeks. You can’t do it faster unless you are willing to pay a lot more - do you want you council tax to rise to save a week or two on roadworks?

Here’s my advice regarding *anyone* who say “do this thing you dislike doing, because if you don’t it means yo don’t love them” That person is not right for you, and probably not right for anyone. Saying “… a man said that if there is no sex ( penetration) it’s not love.” means that most lesbians don’t love each other.  And that is not true, obviously b

You can be captain, helm, radar etc. If I were richer I do it even more often but as it is, it’s a couple of hours indulging my in sci-fi nerd and escaping reality.

The reason that white lights are safer 1. Face Recognition - you can see the faces of other people clearly, which makes people feel more comfortable  2. Colour rendering . When you have on one spectrum of light, things are either orange or black meaning objects look distorted 3. Colour balance. Because everything is either orange or black, it is objectively darker and with more shadows 4. Melenopic reduction. Orange lights make you sleepy. Fine in a residential street but terrible on a dual carriageway. I’ve worked in renovations of public spaces and replacing SOX with LED. Trust me on this.
