If someone told their GP about psychotic symptoms, would they be sectioned?

I've got a relative who has confided in me that they are experiencing things that aren't real. They aren't in danger or a danger to others as far as I am aware (I asked if they're being told to hurt anyone or if they want to hurt themselves), they're just distressed trying to hide their symptoms.
I've offered to accompany them to talk to their GP but they're terrified they'd be sectioned if anyone thought they were crazy so I haven't forced the issue yet in case it stopped them reaching out to me.
Would they be sectioned? Or is there some kind of protocol or criteria I can explain to them to ease their anxiety.
