Why did the US Military choose the XM7?

Regardless of the budgetary problems of the U.S. military, there's been foreshadowing in gun design for decades around the next innovation in small arms being in the cartridge. Sure they could just switch to a .308 that already exists, but I don't believe that's the point.

As far as Amazon goes, yeah, they probably got people in the warehouses specifically to unbox and rebin returns. As far as where you return it goes, the retail grocery store I worked in could barely keep people on the front end to do the cashiering and money supervision for the actual store. So you end up with situations where a cashier can't even get help with customers or step away from the registers because there's an Amazon return line 30 feet long and managers and supervisors are preoccupied with it. Or to free up supervisors time, an individual cashier or Prime Shopper may be scheduled to work a scan gun and a plastic table for 7 hours. Easy money, yeah. Fulfilling? Not especially when you know it's a scam for others. Each box requiring to be no more than 40 pounds, but stuffed full because I'm talking literal pallet loads daily of Amazon returns to be picked up by UPS. In a store whose backroom is almost unnavigable when the actual truck deliveries come in.

I've worked for Amazon and I've worked a place that took their returns. The amount of people who do this so blatantly is insane. The outfit rental is probably the most common. Halloween returns especially. I've seen a small digital scale where someone obviously used it to weigh out a white substance, and I'm pretty sure that order also had glass pipes. Maybe that was a different day... Lots of the items just get binned up and wholesaled at flea markets or outlets for the cheap. But the entire thing is just a huge logistical headache for the workers involved.

Cage armor is used to provide a lightweight pseudoarmor buffer from munitions. The theory is that the round impacts the cage and detonates before it reaches and potentially penetrates the tanks armor. Tanks tend to have thinner armor on top, and this cage was to prevent an explosive from landing right into the turret.

Any idea what kind of gun this is? The post says it's a blackpowder style but I'm not sure.

Ive Johnson .32 likely. Lots of these guns were made before smokeless powder took off. You can find a low pressure "wheel gun" ammo that should be fine. Just make sure the gun is structurally sound to shoot.

That's a couple decades of advancement in technology. And this gun weighs 10ish pounds. The recoil from even a burst is likely a pain to keep on target. Not to mention the feeling on the body.

It worked. But rifles like this were expensive to make at the time. Especially in the middle of a war. The way I understand it, it's recoil operated with flap like locking lugs. I know I wouldn't want to shoot 8mm recoil operated.

On point 5, different leverguns could come in different calibers. I have a modern one that shoots a tapered .30 something caliber. A levergun that uses the same ammo as a pistol of the West would be a compact straighwalled cartridge. Shorter cartridge means less clearance for feeding into the chamber. Faster cycle time.

A lot of the armaments of the Great War had been around a while before the war actually came to fruition. The last war in Europe was against Napoleon (I think). Since that time, modern battleships, machine guns, and artillery advanced leagues, but weren't put to use until the war. The early days were plagued with improper usage and doctrine. So soldiers were sent right into barbed wire, another recent invention, and machine guns because the guys in charge had no experience fighting this kind of war. Same with rolling bombardments. Lots of guys got caught out in utterly annihilating waves of their own shells because of the technology in place for communication. I suppose, theoretically, if the Great War didn't happen when it did, we would've seen a few more decades of modern military technological development, but without of the knowledge that comes from using the weapon systems on a equal target. A much deadlier war for those involved. Dan Carlin has a series on the Great War that covers the mindset of military commanders at the beginning. Worth the insight.

I've got the Iver Johnson of this gun in a lot worse shape. Shoots a .32. I wouldn't shoot mine, but if you do, I've read that you'll want to look into a low powder "wheelgun" ammo.

My guess is that it's a scout plane. Obviously retrofit. Flying at low speeds with open cockpits, most any gun would work. All the mgs are elsewhere, and you hopefully didn't have to reload this midflight.

Don't look like a $1400 gun to me. I see this all the time at the lgs, in racks of other similar guns. Unless you're in to collecting the markings and models, you're better off putting a few hundred into a Turkish Mauser.
