K98 questions

Was looking at local posts for guns. Someone posted this and I was interested. He said he wants $1400 for it and just laughed. He sent more more pics and is claiming it’s super rare. Anything special about this? Nothing is matching but dais its an s42k. He’s out of his mind right? Or am I just dumb? https://imgur.com/a/jmHBdB0

This is just a mixmaster Gew98/K98k thing. The S/42K was just one of the various codes Mauser Oberndorf used, but they stamped onto smaller production parts as, like in the case its just denoting that Mauser manufactured the rear sight base (which was a part they made a shit ton of). This isn’t an actual S/42k coded rifle. As others have said, an S/42k is a legitimately rare gun, and in original condition they are worth a lot of money, but this ain’t one of those.

Technically it is kind of a rare rifle being that it's a very early transitional "K98" from 1934. The S/42K is a Mauser production 1934 date code. I believe this was actually a Gewehr 98 that was converted into a K98 specification which explains some of the faded old markings [https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=52368](https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=52368) That said, it has numberous issues like the drilled scope mounting holes by bubba, mismatched parts, suspected capture, refinish, etc. definitely not worth close to that asking price.

Gotcha thanks for the info. I was aware of the s42k and prices are normally higher but with it essentially being a Frankenstein Russian capture refurb before being bubba shocked me seeing his price. I was hoping he was going to say $200 and thought the 1 was a typo lol

Yeah now that its been drilled and tapped makes it only worth what it would be worth as a shooter, so around 300 tops I'd think

Don't look like a $1400 gun to me. I see this all the time at the lgs, in racks of other similar guns. Unless you're in to collecting the markings and models, you're better off putting a few hundred into a Turkish Mauser.
