What is the best way i can deal with bathroom moisture in a new build?

Posted by Mafz09@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments

PitBullCH@reddit

Depends if the bathroom door is open or closed - yes it will work effectively for a closed room, but once you open the door (or window, if there is a window - but not in this case) then you are just dehumidifying the surrounding area. If the bathroom also contains the only toilet in the house, likely they keep the door closed (for smells !).

If today was your last day on earth which film would you watch and allowed a takaway?

In such a situation it can only be Life of Brian to ram home the absurdity of the human race. With onion bhajis, a lamb jalfrezi and garlic naan - washed down with a good chilled Gewurtztraminer and some stilton as dessert.

Install a portable dehumidifier - usually have an internal container to collect water to empty out when full. Make sure it has variable humidity settings, selectable speeds, a timer, and triggered auto-on/off.

Sitting in my home office in the spring mornings listening to the House Sparrows in the trees outside the front window and the Eurasian Blackbirds in the trees outside the side window - raucous but somehow harmonious and soothing. (yeah - I got a bird song ID app 😉)

I think you miss a lot as an only child - primarily (usually) life-long sibling friendship / confidant / advice - but you do get all the parental attention. I’m told by Wifey that I am at times a typical only child - she does not mean that well 😱

What can be done to help educate drivers and reduce the amount of ‘middle lane hoggers’?

Posted by theslowrunningexpert@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 71 comments

PitBullCH@reddit

I can only comment on the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy - in all of which it's quite common - but I accept my use of the term *most* countries was based on extrapolation of experience rather than hard empirical data !

How do you interpret hyphenated surnames in married couples?

Here in Switzerland you can choose to tack your partners name on the end after yours - can be hyphenated or not depends what you want. Quite a good solution.

Happens in most countries tbh - ideally we would be able to just barge them out the way but for some reason the law doesn’t take kindly to that ;-)

Avoid Hexclad - they really do not last very long and will flake the non-stick finish over time. Cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel ftw. AllClad and Made-In are both excellent.

Who knew butter beans in a jar were SO much better than the canned ones? What other night and day change in quality can you see for a couple of quid?

There was a Daily Telegraph test last weekend on jarred vs canned vs dried beans of various varieties - IIRC the jarred ones were generally the best, though expensive.

What eras of house have you lived in and how do they compare?

Posted by OpenCantaloupe4790@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 2 comments

PitBullCH@reddit

The older the better as long as renovated for electrics, heating, insulation etc - anything built in last 30-40 years will be pokey, with smaller rooms, thinner internal and external walls, and smaller garden (if it has one).

Aeron is great unless you have short thighs, in which case the thin front edge bar of the seat will dig into your leg over time and cause numbness.

Why are garages in newly build houses so narrow, that a normal car can’t fit into it?

Newer houses are also smaller than old - it’s the developers squeezing the maximum properties (and the maximum profit) from new estates.

Why isn't adversed weather driving training isn't normalised here?

Posted by Lost-Actuary-2395@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 29 comments

PitBullCH@reddit

I suspect there are a few orgs that potentially could do such training - but in the UK it’s rare to have the conditions necessary and hence difficult to schedule it reliably. The ADAC (similar to the UK’s AA) does them in Germany - I did one near Stuttgart many years ago: was a real eye opener, very educational but also good fun - that training has since been useful to me many times in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Do drivers in the UK put snow tyres on their car?

Posted by pickindim_kmet@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 60 comments

PitBullCH@reddit

Same - I lived in southern Germany for a few years where winter tyres were frequently needed - continued to swap winter/summer tyres after I moved back to the UK. Living now in Switzerland it is necessary here (not a legal requirement - but your insurance company will cane you if you have a crash and lack of winter tyres was a factor). BTW you can tell the difference in behaviour of winter tyres vs summer tyres in both the winter and the summer - comes down to the different rubber compounds used and how the behave in colder vs warmer conditions.

Nothing will treat/stop the virus itself, all you can do is alleviate the symptoms. You’ll find things like honey & lemon drink, or ginger juice - these are more or less as effective as lemsip and other over the counter remedies.
