What’s your ultimate ‘driving song’ ?
Posted by SuspiciouslyJoyous@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 380 comments
What songs give you that exhilarated feeling when you’re travelling? I’m popping together the ultimate driving playlist for an upcoming trip and I’m intrigued as to other folks’ favourite driving song.
Feel free to contribute with your favourite bus/train bangers if you don’t drive.

Recently it has been Sailing Away by Styx. Thanks One Piece Live Action. But also the entire Bat Out of Hell Album.

Boys of summer, either the Don Henley or Dj Sammy version

Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
DJ Sammy version is a guilty pleasure. Millennial nostalgia fuel.

Both good, but for me, Don Henley every time. On a sunny day, this made even the drive home from work epic.

This is my first choice too, but as you (and so many other people!) have suggested it I'm going to throw in my favourite follow up track - Eloise by The Damned.
If the car isn't close to vibrating then it isn't loud enough and singing along is compulsory.
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
Just whack on the Fleetwood Mac Best of. Wall to wall bangers.

One time it was playing as i was driving through a village, and the beat dropped at the exact moment the speed limit went back up to 60.
Best driving moment ever.
smushs88@reddit
Driving goals! 🙌🏻

As someone who lives rurally, I know the exact point to press play on The Chain to have the wailing guitars kick in as I get to a nice straight 60 stretch.

getoutmywayatonce@reddit
It changes, right now it’s a toss up between Guns n Roses - Don’t Cry, and Aerosmith - Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing. Something about the classics makes for a nice drive for me. Love a few French oldies on a late night drive too
SnooMacarons9618@reddit
I used to have a double cd of 50s, 60s and 70s French pop. That was perfect driving through the night (or early morning) music.
getoutmywayatonce@reddit
Oh what a blast! Do you remember any favourites from it? 😁
SnooMacarons9618@reddit
Looked it up. It's called 'a French affair' but seemingly there were different double CDs with the same name.
Je t'aime moi non plus, Michelle, Chanson d'amour, She, etc. It's definitely a late summer night driving album. My rip has some tracks missing, I need to go fix that as soon as possible :)
chez2202@reddit
I don’t have an ultimate one but I do have a few suggestions.
Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. Little Red Corvette by Prince.
Not vehicular related are Firestarter or Breathe by The Prodigy, In Da Club by 50 Cent, This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads, Mysterious Ways by U2 and Drama by Erasure.
Yes, I have extremely varied tastes.
Sad-Masterpiece-4760@reddit
Breathe is a far better song than Firestarter and nobody will ever change my mind
chez2202@reddit
I totally agree.
IrritablePowell@reddit
One magical day, Halycon + On + On by Orbital came on in my playlist as I was leaving home for work. The beat kicked in as I hit the main road, and the song finished as I pulled in to the car park at work. I tried to replicate the experience since then but it has never aligned so perfectly again. But it's a great track for driving anyway.
datguysadz@reddit
Disco Lights by Darren Styles always takes me back to 2008 when my friends and I were first passing our tests and razzing it round on the evenings on a McFlurry run.
A lot of people my age would probably say something by like H "Two" O featuring Platnum or T2 or something. Very late-2000s UK driving

Everything in its Right Place - Radiohead. I once drove across the North Yorkshire moors after a gig in Whitby back to Derby, Toyota MR2 Mk3, guitar strapped in the passage seat, around late August, 1am with the top down, this tune cranked, no one else on the road, the perfect drive home. A really strong driving tune connection.

When the guitar solo kicks in....🤟🏼
Hearthacnut@reddit
Hot take: the start of the solo is the 2nd best part of the song. Listen from 7:20 and pay attention to the bass building up in the background, and then when it breaks down at 8:10. Masterpiece
Upstairs_Yogurt_5208@reddit
I have to remember that I’m driving when the solo kicks in. There’s been a few times where I go into the zone and almost crash the bloody car.
pharmer25@reddit
My first thought too, I wonder how many speeding tickets that guitar solo has caused 😂🤪

Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat

Smalltown boy is just timeless. I think we have a privilege in this era where bands are coming along, inspired by artists from before their time, and reinvigorating genres.
Also I love singing the part "....always a lonely bawy" 😂

But of a story. Bar worker, mid 80's, and at end of night, the bar owner was pissed, so I had to drive him in his open-topped Merc, back to his rural Aberdeenshire home. Did that journey in basic silence, with just his grumbling.
Returning alone to Aberdeen at 1.00am, I stuck on the cassette player and heard, for the first time, the full version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone, by The Temptations. Warm summer night, pitch black sky, Milky Way overhead, and THAT intro at high volume. Once experienced, never forgotten.

When I was at University we lived in the city but our Uni was on campus. I lived with 5 other girls, and my friend and I were the only one’s with cars.
By default we were regularly 3-4 people, on the drive in to uni (especially final year).
If anyone had an exam / assessment / bad mood - ‘Good Day - Nappy Roots’, was on.
