Do I have to say I was involved in an accident even if I wasn’t at fault?

Posted by ElMeroFriki@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Kuzinarium@reddit

You already know the answer. Of course it is yes. Not at fault accidents are not a disqualification. On the other hand, lying by omission would absolutely destroy your odds of getting hired. I was involved in a very serious crash, wasn’t my fault. It didn’t keep me from getting hired.

Every area of trucking has its pros and cons. Food transportation gives you a good job security, but also a lot of wasted time loading and unloading at someone else’s pace who doesn’t give two shits about your time. Flatbed usually takes less time to pick up and deliver, but it does entail a lot more physical labor. Tankers have a set of dangers unique to them. As does hauling the oversized loads, albeit different from the others. Lots of physical labor securing the loads, for example. Dragging a lot of chains and binders. Hauling cars doesn’t require a lot of heavy lifting, but there’s a real risk of slipping and falling, potentially causing a serious injury. It all depends on what you are comfortable doing. If you’re averse to doing some manual labor, don’t do anything involving securing a load. If you have very little patience for the prolonged waiting time, don’t do refer.

True, but it is not rocket science to learn how to secure a flatbed load. Dealing with the tarps is another matter. If you practice it often enough, you will also become very efficient at tarping. However, when it’s windy and rainy and you’re doing it alone, it is going to suck, each and every time.

This is very true. There’s always going to be some type of BS to deal with in the trucking business. Some places and jobs are a lot more tolerable than others. It really depends on an individual what flavor of this you’ll find acceptable.

If you could retrofit an old truck to use now, what would it be? For me it would be one of these old Macks.

You can make more money driving elsewhere. However, their benefits are a lot better, including their pension. The other advantage is you’ll never have to pull onto the scale in a US Mail truck.

I don't appreciate when your slow rig drives in the far left lane. It's a safety hazard.

Hot garbage description may be an understatement. More like a full fledged shit show. Where the drivers are going to be screwed over in just about every way possible. By all means, find something else. You’ll be far better off.

TIPS FOR DRIVING PORTION ROAD TEST

Kuzinarium@reddit

When merging onto the highway, use the full length of the merge lane. Pay close attention to the bridge height signs, odds are you’ll be asked what was the bridge height you just passed.

This for the overheight guys/gals that lost weight while trucking. How did you guys/gals do it ?

Eating only once or twice a day is not conducive to weight loss. You should eat less per meal but more frequently. This speeds up your metabolism.

Taking off for the winters

Posted by Calm-Ad5005@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 36 comments

Kuzinarium@reddit

I used to haul gravel in Michigan when I first started. It was normal for me to work crazy hours from April until around Thanksgiving, and then get a layoff for the winter. Collected unemployment until April and worked crazy hours again. Always local work, home daily and the weekends (at least partially) off.

Just ducked up and I might not have a job anymore. Any advice helps

So, in reality he didn’t get fired for hitting the trailer. He got fired for lying, which was a very stupid thing to do, cameras or not.

We had some AH back into one of our trucks at a red light to claim she was rear ended. The driver was to retire that week. He retired with a bit more money than he was expecting.

Look into towing and rigging companies. Also construction companies. Some of these jobs are going to be shitty, but it will give you the experience to get something better in time.

Is there such a thing as a cost effective way to obtain a CDL?

Posted by YamminOnYa@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 26 comments

Kuzinarium@reddit

The best companies to go through to get your CDL are LTLs and their dock to driver training imho. Most people who were trained to drive are still here many years later.

Having trouble finding a job

It can happen. It’s not going to be the best jobs, but it’s there. Garbage, towing, rigging companies. You can make a good pay there in a relatively short time, but you will earn every dollar.

Best way to start?

Posted by Hopfrogg@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 11 comments

Kuzinarium@reddit

One of the best ways to get licensed is through the LTL companies and their dock to driver training programs. You’ll get paid while you’re learning and you’ll be immediately in a much better job than OTR. If you don’t mind working nights, you’ll be able to earn six figures a year by your second year. And be home daily.

How exactly do you cope with the rigors of trucking IN NEW YORK CITY?

Posted by IDislikeHomonyms@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Kuzinarium@reddit

It’s not that bad. I’ve done it for years, even with the oversized loads. Just be patient, plan ahead and know your way around. Not driving there anymore, other than occasionally passing through, without getting off the highway

You can win the court case. But it still takes a lot of time to do so. Collecting the judgment is another matter. More wasted time. Almost anytime you are chasing your money is more aggravation than it’s worth.

I never showed up for the court. Once in Arizona and once in Florida. Both times a lawyer handled it. However, your attorney will know if you need to be there in person.

It’s much easier to reach $100K doing line haul. I suppose you can do it on P&D but stars would have to align to reach this. Or you could do P&D and supplement it by doing a line haul run on a weekend now and again.

Never use it when it’s ice or snow. It’s only going to slow down the drive axles wheels. The trailer wheels will continue to spin at the previous rate of speed, causing the trailer to push the tractor. Under normal traction conditions, it is a non issue. However, when the traction is reduced, it can and most likely will cause a jackknife.
