Is there a legal limit to how far you can dig down in your own garden?

Digging a certain depth within a certain distance of another property requires Party Wall I think. Utility companies can take an interest. Possibly building control depending on what’s there. Environment Agency too, depending on depth and geographical restrictions.

Why can't the UK build capital projects?

Posted by mahler_1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 369 comments

KonkeyDongPrime@reddit

The main factor, that few people seem to understand, is the financial model for assessing viability. HS2 is the most extreme example. They had to gerrymander the figures in the first place, then through COVID. Somehow it was the model that spat the premise that making the line not just high speed, but higher speed than the other HS line in the country. The models need an overhaul. Add some common sense. On railways, the premise should be simple: you need two lines running in parallel. One for a donkey train, one for a fast train. Then you have a spare line for renewal works to the other.

Isolation from blame is another benefit to senior management and political decision makers. If a contract goes badly, they can just blame the contractor and not their own lack of management and oversight.

They shared the main engineering and cost consultancy jobs between the Big 4, who set the rules for governance and measuring VFM. So they set themselves up to make their own homework, then subcontracted out everything about the delivery, on terms hidden from the taxpayer, to firms with the correct capacity and expertise. The Big 4 were basically employed to rig it to line their own pockets, in a way most likely to make a mess of the actual work.

Go for it. Try and get some industry experience during the summer holidays, or a sandwich year. You might get the opportunity to complete the degree part time after a sandwich year. Sounds like a great opportunity. If you can handle the maths and the amount of graft goes into an engineering degree, you will be fine.

Tidal water courses are most likely to create conditions to increase likelihood of body remaining undiscovered. River Hull there was a case a few years ago. The Thames is a violently fast moving river between tides, so potentially one of the most prone to dragging a body under, although by weird coincidence, there is a stagnation point on the river, most likely for bodies to resurface, Dead Man’s Hole, which also happened to be where they dumped the bodies of people executed at the Tower.

Probably agree with your assessment and ranking. All of the extra special type ranges are good. Glad you also give Morrison’s a shout. Having their own dedicated UK supply chain means their fresh stuff really stands out and there’s no real need for a special range because it’s all so good.

Is there a redeeming quality to the current state of HS2?

Posted by johnjax90@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 239 comments

KonkeyDongPrime@reddit

The public infrastructure funding model needs a complete overhaul. HS2 proved beyond all doubt that it’s not fit for purpose. Second lines are needed all over the country. Every major route should have a fast intercity service running in parallel to a donkey line. The only way the model worked for the funding for HS2, was based on an assumption of achievable speed, which was unachievable in practice and then also forced the route to be sub optimal. The routes up North were a lash up to destroy the case for a decent trans-pennine service. Shit was always going to hit the fan. If the model was just ‘we need additional lines, slightly faster than the ones we currently have’ then the entire thing would have been cheaper and simpler. Then you factor in infrastructure underinvestment leading to a skills gap, so the politicians only workaround is to ask their mates at large management consultancies. These people don’t know their arse from their elbow at the best of times, but they scored all the big contracts just to sublet them to various rival engineering consultancies.

I would be tempted. You can be in central by 7pm, grab something nice to eat, then be back on the train by 9am the next morning. Just make sure you get a hotel within 5 minute walk of an Elizabeth Line station.

Shit gets lively but people don’t wear ridiculous costumes, dancing a bit more reserved than say Netherlands gabber nights. There are UK rave and London Raving subreddits for better advice. I’m assuming you mean a proper rave and not a townie-pop music nightclub? Beware the month you come, depending on what you want. From May onwards you start to get more day raves. August is mainly day raves and festivals. London better for maintaining nights 10pm to 6am raves through August. Bristol pretty kicking. Look at what you want and book in advance. Book far enough in advance and you will get cheap tickets. If you just want a jolly with a bit of dancing, you would be better finding a bar that has a dance floor and music you like. Again, check on the London social sub.

My sister used to work in the sector for a local authority. As cash ran out, the service went to shit and she left. The ‘shadow school system’ used to refer to these non-mainstream schools and there was a BBC article about it. That was mainly related to substandard facilities being used. The definition has changed so I can’t find the article. In short, my sister ran one of those schools, that was substandard ie not to current standards, but that was OK as it was an old school building. The problem started when they started combining the streams, so my sister would look after physically, psychologically disabled, temporarily disabled, ex drug addicted, severely bullied, neurodivergent kids, who did not belong in the SEN system. With budget cuts, the council combined the behavioural excluded into the stream, including the offspring of the crime families who were doing the drug dealing to children and severe bullying. Major safeguarding catastrophe.

Why don’t you ask in the USA? Or a specialist sub? My sister works in state education previously outside of the mainstream, so I’m slightly more informed about how it works, or it’s supposed to work in the UK, but I have no clue about the equivalent details in the US.
