How often do American mothers get asked for money from their sons?

Posted by Agitated_Exercise_75@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 31 comments

Jdevers77@reddit

We all ask our moms for exactly $20 exactly 3 times per year. What kind of question is this? I’ve never asked my mom for money since I was 16 or so 40 years ago…I’m sure other 50 year old sons sadly ask their mom for money all the time. My father in law is 80 and asks us for money every so often. How often do Indian mothers get asked for money from their sons? It probably depends on a ton of circumstances, right? It’s like that only in the US and not India.

These are absolutely signs of clinical depression. I’m a nurse and obviously can’t diagnosis but what you are describing is very much a set of red flags. You need to speak to someone about this and not someone online. You could start with any medical provider you already have a relationship with, even your OB/GYN.

Put a tunnel over every hwy. Protect wildlife, trap emissions and run them through a filter. Reduce noise pollution.

Posted by SeaOfBullshit@reddit | CrazyIdeas | View on Reddit | 55 comments

Jdevers77@reddit

“Trap emissions” right in there with the drivers, huh? Nearby me is an interstate highway with a roughly 1/2 mile tunnel through a mountain. There are probably 40 large ventilation fans on each side of the highway to push emissions out so people don’t asphyxiate in the tunnel. How would that work in the roughly 4.2 million miles of highway in the US?

One thing to remember is they are exceptionally short lived animals, most in the wild don’t even make it 2 years. Even in captivity they rarely live more than 4 years.

They ACT vicious but are completely harmless (unless you force them to bite you or something). If the big act doesn’t work, they act like they are dead.

By metro area population its number 18, so would qualify in my top 30. Still though, if the top 30 cities in the US were as safe as SD and NYC the same would apply,

Yes, but that is not taking into account how much safer NYC was before that and has been since the mid 90s. NYC is BY FAR the safest large city in the US, if the top 30 cities in the country had the exact same crime rates as NYC the country would be more comparable to the EU.

Jdevers77@reddit

I’m way more well traveled than any of the other poor people I know…but less traveled than many of the rich people I know. I’ve been to 44 states, 18 or 19 foreign countries (Europe gets confusing, I THINK I went to Vatican City but I’m not 100% sure). It’s kind of unfair because I backpacked across Europe after high school 30 years ago and that’s most of it. It cost me like $300 for the whole trip including air fare but that’s just completely impossible now. I’ve also never been to Asia, Australia or Africa so definitely not really well traveled.

Not only this, but the cars available as with a manual aren’t exactly the ones you would think either. Yeah, Ford still sells manual Mustangs but Chevy doesn’t sell manual Cameros in the current model. Dodge doesn’t sell manual Charger either they do sell manual Challengers. After that it gets weird with a mix of sporty cars, compacts, and trucks and several manufacturers have said that when the next major redesign of their cars are released they will be automatic only. I love driving manual, but the truth is modern automatics can be very very good.

Incubus 1981. I watched it when I was EIGHT. It a horror movie about a demon that rapes most of a town. Like violently, brutally rapes and then kills most of the women in this little Wisconsin town. My sister was 4 but I don’t think she understood any of it at all.

I drink tea, but not for caffeine and only one cup in the afternoon to chill and relax with my wife before we start cooking supper. Does that count? I do drink on occasion but can’t remember the last time I was drunk, typically I just like to drink a drink sitting around the pool in the summer. You could probably just make a mojito without the rum and I wouldn’t even notice 😂

We should farm mushrooms in a large scale instead of wheat, rice, corn etc, so that we have more land for urbanization.

Jdevers77@reddit

Did we run out of land? It seems like we still have a shitload of good land. It might not be exactly where we want it to be, but growing corn, rice, and wheat rarely steals prime land from cities and cities themselves seem to have no problem growing out and up. Certainly it doesn’t seem like a big enough problem that we would starve the entire planet to death since wheats rice, and corn provide the vast majority of calories people on the planet eat but mushrooms provide almost none.

Jdevers77@reddit

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? No, but most do. Do all women take their husband’s surname? Not all women are married and not all married women take their husband’s surname, but most do (although less and less over time). The US is the third most populous country on Earth. It’s also the only top 3 populated country that is basically an immigrant country. You will find people here from every single part of the planet and not in a “look, we have 4 people from Uzbekistan!” kind of way. There are full blown substantial communities of people from all over the world. There is no “ever” or “all” when it comes to the US. You will find people who cover not just every country and culture on the planet but people whose beliefs range across every possible spectrum. It’s what makes living here so awesome and also what makes living here so awful (depending on who you ask).

Send a periodic table of the elements set to each planet.

Posted by flamingloltus@reddit | CrazyIdeas | View on Reddit | 35 comments

Jdevers77@reddit

So planets are large, like really large. Many of the planets in our solar system don’t even have a solid surface and none of them (including Earth) have some form of space post office box. If we were to send something like that to say Mars, it would just land on the surface and get covered with dust in a few weeks or so. Unless some alien race was literally sitting in Earth or Mars orbit watching us do it, it would never be seen again. Nothing gained long term and Mars is the best place for something like this to happen. If tomorrow I decided to send “a periodic table of the elements” to some random place on Earth there is a good chance no one would ever even see it (3/4 of the planet is ocean and a decent bit of the rest is frozen wasteland or empty desert) and there are 8 billion people on this planet.

To really highlight how silly it is that Americans make a big deal out of Cinco de Mayo, people in Mexico could pick the date of an arbitrary US military or naval victory, and start celebrating it as a public holiday.

My city is about half Hispanic and most Hispanic people here are Mexican (El Salvador makes up most of the difference). Yesterday I saw probably 20 Mexican flags flying in the back of trucks. All of those trucks appeared to be driven by Hispanic people. I doubt there are all that many people from Puebla here, but I don’t know that. The most logical explanation is at least some Mexican Americans have also decided to co-opt May 5th as a heritage celebration.

Where in the populated North East is that the default accent though? Boston along with all of New England, NYC, NJ, and Philly all have pretty distinct accents historically. Maryland and DC had a notably more southern twang or else their own separate accent (depending on the location). Ohio absolutely, but not really anywhere NE of Pittsburg. I would have thought the early “TV voice” would have been more likely to be a toned down NYC accent.

My family of four doesn’t eat meat or soda and our overall grocery bill is up on average 40-60% over the last 6 years. We budget everything (FIRE baby!) and so have records of our weekly grocery purchases since 2008. There is no one single thing we buy that is more expensive, it’s just about everything. The only things that haven’t gone up notably are dry beans (which thankfully we buy a shitload of), almost every single other thing has gone up roughly that 40-60%.

When I was in high school we got a vehicle with power windows, so I’m not sure if that counts. Also for like 3-5 years we had a chipped C band satellite dish that got all those channels (and a WHOLE lot more hahaha…all my friends were watching Skinamax and I introduced them to American EXXXtasy and shit like that=minds blown hahah). So somewhere between 2-4 total points.

Jdevers77@reddit

When you look out from your front door and see thick white ice you will be cautious and walk carefully. Yes, it’s slick but it’s a know quantity and you know it’s slick before you ever set foot on it. When you look out from your front door and see nothing but concrete and only realize it’s covered in black ice after you have taken a few steps on it a very different thing can happen. Instead of knowing it was slick before you started, you know it was slick as you are looking up after waking up from smacking your head on it after going tits up. The same thing applies when driving. You seem to live in Denver. Would you rather drive on a snow covered road where you KNOW it’s slick or a perfectly fine road that every so often has patches of near zero friction?

Ignore the moon. There ain't shit there. Don't colonize it. Living in a vast wasteland hasn't worked out for all the people in the fucking desert, why do it on the moon now? Turn it into a Dune Buggy race course sponsored by Red Bull.

Posted by ConspiracyParadox@reddit | CrazyIdeas | View on Reddit | 170 comments

Jdevers77@reddit

Initially yes, sort of. Clearly launching a ship from Earth that then lands on the Moon and then launches again is incredibly wasteful. Launching multiple ships to the moon to then start a new mission that is fueled from multiple different shipments from Earth is still inefficient but allows for things we simply can’t do from Earth. Regardless though, the promise of launches from the Moon are not that sort of thing. Down the road a bit with a hypothetical manufacturing base on the moon and that equation changes. The surface of the moon is rich in many raw materials which we could use to construct and fuel ships. Escape velocity from the Moon is 8,552 km/h versus 40,320 km/h from the Earth. Also, while a space elevator based on the surface of the Earth would require materials substantially stronger than anything we can build right now, there are multiple materials we currently manufacture that are strong enough to do the same from the surface of the Moon. Yea, that would be a huge engineering marvel…but it’s possible versus one on the Earth is currently impossible.

The system is wildly different now, but I got my license the day I turned 16. I had driven exactly once prior to that day. The entire process took about 2 hours…about 115 minutes of that was me waiting my turn and then 5 minutes of my showing a state trooper I could adjust the mirrors and drive a loop around the building. I think it was $5 but may have been $10. I had to take a written test 30 days prior to that which was divided into two parts…sign identification and basic driving questions. This was 30ish years ago.
