I'm far far more a PC gamer, but there is no disputing that the absolute pinnacle game code is the Konami code. It's used across multiple genre of games, not just generations of the same game.
MotorCycologist@reddit
The Bank of Canada used it on its website to unlock an Easter egg. Even the government uses the Konami code!

Something that gets overlooked is that this also worked on Lifeforce. An awesome underrated game. You got the same 30 lives with the same code.
WasteOfBerries@reddit
The first game to get the code was Gradius, so it makes total sense that Lifeforce would have it.
Also: Lifeforce is a kickass game, in either context of 'kickass'

Stinky--Whizzleteats@reddit
I recently unearthed my old SNES and played a little Mortal Kombat 2.
It really was the blood and gore, we all have good memories of those games but I'll tell ya, they weren't that good. I know this sounds extreme, but Shaq Fu isn't that much of a downgrade. Mortal Kombat had the blood, that was the main attraction, not the gameplay.
All I'm saying is there's a reason why Street Fighter 2 still has a competitive scene and others of that era don't.
ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit
That thing was fucking magic. I still don’t understand how they were able to create a device and that ridiculous book that went with it and then somehow all they had to do was put out an update to the book every once in a while and it would cover new games. That thing was so fucking cool
Alarming-Energy-5654@reddit
It was memory hacking. Replacing variables in memory to specific values. This ended up being intro to hacking for me, and almost ended up with me in compsci as a professional. I did choose a different path, but this almost did it.
CarnalKid@reddit
Is it true that they had to brute force the codes? I know nothing about this stuff, but remember reading that somewhere.
Alarming-Energy-5654@reddit
Nah, if you used a computer kit (galoob had them, not end users) you could scan memory for values like say “100” (lifebars) or 3 (lives), then do something in game, take damage or die, and see which values changed. Then you’d know the memory address you needed, and could set (lock, even) them how you wanted (lock 100 for infinite health)
CarnalKid@reddit
Sweet. Thanks for explaining!
B0b_Howard@reddit
That's also how (basically) cheat engin works (at a really intro level).
Alarming-Energy-5654@reddit
Oh absolutely… the Game Shark for PS1 had this kind of connection available to everyone. I used it most memorably to determine character matrices for Final Fantasy VII, hack their stats and put inappropriate characters on my team (Wedge, Sepheroth, Aerith post death, Shopkeeper, etc). There really was unfinished content for Aerith, and she worked well interacting with NPCs on later discs and even had a weapon! The others mostly just caused crashes and didn’t have the stats for gameplay.

I said in another comment, but screw it. I bought a retropi that has thousands upon thousands of games from our childhood. You can pause it and put in game genie codes. What’s cool is you can put in more than 3 that game genie put a cap on.
ken830@reddit
It's just a man-in-the-middle. It allows you to set any value to any memory address. So if you know where the game stores the lives counter (it's trivial to figure this out), you can give yourself unlimited lives.
blanksix@reddit
I still have one, and a few games. My favorite code was and still is the one for Contra that screws with the graphics. I don't think it was in the book but KONTAA was fun. The rest of the codes made basically any game way too easy though

madlibs13@reddit
I think it was the beginning of more online gaming than previous generations and it would be 99.999999999% impossible to know if someone was using a cheating device or not while playing. So the companies basically make it nearly impossible to use cheating devices.

Besides the Konami Code?
Not necessarily the best but some of my favorites were the NBA Jam Tournament Edition codes, specifically the ones that unlocked Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
My other favorite were the passwords that unlocked the N-1 Naboo Fighter in Rogue Squadron on the N64. The inclusion of the ship was kept a secret for months until The Phantom Menace was released and then the code was published.

Contra is the only correct answer to this question.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was released in 1998. It had a cheat code to unlock the N1 Naboo Starfighter. Of course The Phantom Menace was released in 1999. The ship was hidden in the game before the movie was released.
Also the Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast cheat to enable lightsaber dismemberment.

Remembering that time I got Bad Dudes (NES) after seeing the 64 life cheat code in a magazine, simply because the screenshots made it look like a good game and I wanted to try out the code.
It was a decent game, had some fun playing it 2 player as well.
Also looking it up, only now finding out there's another cheat code (the one they're calling Superman here), so you know what I'm doing later this week.
