What happens if your parent dies and you just.. don’t want to pay for the funeral?

>Tell them if they don’t, you won’t be holding one for them so it’s really in their best interests I know what you mean, but is it really in their best interests? The way I see it is that my funeral is for whoever is left to care about me; ultimately, it makes no difference to me whatsoever as I'll be dead. I think I'm in a minority, but I see funerals as an event for the living. I honestly don't mind what happens to my remains when I die.

What premier league team do you rally on and what’s your special reason to do so?

Games4Two@reddit

Most people in the UK support either the local team where they grew up or another team they grew up supporting, mostly teams who were doing well when they were about 6-10 or so or the team their dad supported. Football is so engrained in culture here, especially among men and boys, that very few choose their club as adults.

Without Googling, do the names Rommel, Montgomery, Paulus, and Dönitz mean anything to you? And roughly old are you?

Posted by Norman_debris@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1050 comments

Games4Two@reddit

They're Second World War generals. Rommel and Montgomery associated with the African and Western fronts, Paulus with the east and Stalingrad. Dönitz was head of the German fleet and succeeded Hitler when he killed himself. I'm 39. Absolutely no way those are household names in the UK.

Right, obviously we're both British. What are these things called?

They do have grammar schools in Lincolnshire - Gainsborough, Caistor, Spalding I think etc - so he may well have sat an entrance exam for those schools. Unless he's very old or privately educated he'll almost certainly have taken SATs as well, which are separate national standardised tests at 7 and 11. I say breakfast, dinner and tea. It was always non-uniform day. Mock exams too. I've never heard of SATs in this context, though some schools have recently taken to calling them PPEs (Pre-Public Exams). Until about 2010 there were SATs in year 9, so perhaps he's thinking of those. I'm from North Lincolnshire and haven't moved all that far.

Definition of cult classic. Probably influenced every British indie band formed in the early to mid 90s. As you say, their one album is fantastic.

Thea Gilmore is probably the most lyrically interesting and vocally accomplished of a generation of English singer-songwriters, but never really broke through. That probably her most complete album is the one she chose not to record under her own name (Afterlight) compounds her relative obscurity.

Yep exactly the same. Spend a few hundred on a every few years on a well-reviewed phone that's not an Apple/Google/Samsung etc and just get a cheap SIM-only deal. Haven't had a phone contract in a long time - getting on for ten years I bet. Obviously not everyone can afford the up-front cost and/or wants the big triple A release every time, but I'd never go back.

Anyone got recommendations for 2 player games that are easily portable?

Games4Two@reddit

**Circle the Wagons** is a really good game. Button Shy are great at producing these 18 card wallet games and that's one of the better competitive ones imo. Do get that. Echoing many others who have recommended **Hive**. It's a brilliant game and ideal for travel: light, portable, a small number of large components, essentially indestructible and playable almost anywhere you can find about 1'x1' of playing surface. I don't think I've seen **Star Realms** mentioned - it's a fairly simple deck-building duelling game designed by a couple of champion Magic players. If you get it, there's a great free phone app that makes the tracking the scoring so much easier. There are three main sets, all going for about ÂŁ12-15, and any one is a good bet. **The Fox in the Forest** is a very well done two-player trick-taking game. **Schotten Totten** is a very well-designed game that can get very intense, especially if you play with the tactics module that comes with it. You're basically playing a poker variant mixed with counting area control. It needs a bit more space than the others, but we've played it in cafes all over the place.

How long could you financially survive if you lost your job?

Posted by Outside_Cod8772@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 215 comments

Games4Two@reddit

On my own, probably about a year before I'm totally wiped out. Maybe less than that as about 60% of my savings aren't accessible to me until December so I'd struggle quite a bit until then. With my wife and assuming she kept working, probably forever. That would obviously necessitate significant lifestyle change for both of us, but we wouldn't be out on the street. We're not in exceptional jobs (about 100k combined I guess) and are lucky enough to have a few savings, but nothing totally out of the ordinary. I do appreciate we're lucky to be where we are.

Are foreign languages emphasized much in UK schools?

Posted by Cinderpath@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 75 comments

Games4Two@reddit

14% of the UK population is foreign born. Even taking into account migration from anglophone countries and very young children, it'll be more than 3% before you even get onto the many children of first generation migrants who will likely be multilingual.

My grandad is bedbound due to age, but still sound of mind. He’s SO bored with nothing but the drivel on the TV all day. Anyone got any ideas that can amuse him, whilst being alone?

Games4Two@reddit

Came to say this. If you're not aware, OP, modern board gaming is a surprisingly vibrant hobby and solo board gaming a growing niche within it. Obviously being bed bound places certain limitations on what he can do, but I'd suggest looking into roll and write games such as Cartographers or cheap card games. A company called Button Shy make excellent, simple solo games based on 18 cards which would be ideal. You can also pay for very cheap print and play files (I'm talking a couple of quid) at [PNPArcade](https://www.pnparcade.com/). There are also some excellent self published print and plays out there. [This one](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=http://juegosrollandwrite.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Bargain-Basement-Bathysphere.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwijzZzfwsSDAxVy7bsIHZFZBisQFnoECBgQAQ&usg=AOvVaw37i3wn-l41eH3D1Im5I0R7) just needs a printer, a pencil and a few dice. If you'd like more bespoke advice, r/soloboardgaming is a lovely community.

I question I have about the James Bulger case. What about the killers' families?

Posted by BeStillAllIsWell@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 39 comments

Games4Two@reddit

Not exactly the same, but over the last few years I've fallen down a Columbine Massacre hole. For those unfamiliar, this was an extremely high-profile small-town school shooting in 1999, in which 12 students, a teacher and both killers were killed. It has become archetypal of that very American tragedy. Anyway, both killers' parents and their siblings remained in the locality for a while and all have been repeatedly sued by victims' families. I'm not aware of sustained violence or harassment, though there will undoubtedly have been some, as there were of some of the killers' friends. Since then, one of the killers' parents has written a book about her experiences (A Mother's Reckoning) and regularly contributes to debate about gun violence and mental health (her son was depressed, among much else). She featured extensively on Panorama or similar a year or so ago and met with one of her son's victim's daughter. The father of this same killer I have no idea about - the parents divorced years ago and I don't think I've seen even a recent picture of him. The killer's older brother is living his own life in his early 40s and you can Google his social media. They've all kept the very unusual name (Klebold). The other shooter's parents remained silent from the outset, even from the point of not speaking to investigating officers without a lawyer and initially refusing access to their son's room when the police arrived at their house. They were panicked, but this among other behaviours led some in the community and others since to accuse them of knowing and turning a blind eye to a lot of what we would now call red flags; being fair, these people seem to have a point. Anyway, they moved out of Littleton years ago, but the father keeps or kept a website (referring to his son as "dying at Columbine", which I guess is r/technicallythetruth) with family photos from up to a few years ago. They've kept their much more common name (Harris) and most of them obviously live openly with their past, albeit removed from the community where it happened. So, long way of not answering your question, but I thought of it when reading your original post.

It's a magnificent game. Obviously it expands a ton, but the core box alone is really replayable and has five heroes and three villains, all of which you can customise in different ways - you could easily stop with the core and have a really enjoyable, fun game. The villain is an automa that follows a fairly simple script each round. It plays exactly the same solo as multiplayer - no one actually plays the villain, the heroes work alone or co-operatively to take down the villain. The might find this video useful https://youtu.be/btHbwtRj9Zk It will take a couple of playthroughs to grasp the rules and rhythms of the game, but it soon becomes very intuitive and fluid.

My story is very similar. Absolutely love them People give me very odd looks when I tell them that I spend a lot of time playing boardgames on my own too. I strongly suspect some think I'm sat multi-handing Monopoly or something, though maybe that's preferable to making it known exactly how much I've spent on thousands and thousands of cards.
