Parents: What was it like when you saw your darling child have to just get a job like everyone else?

It’s pressure and burnout. New paras are only expected to last a handful of years before moving on these days. There are exceptions of course but a lot move on from frontline reasonably quickly.

Paramedic here, we’re actually decently paid these days, more so than the other emergency services and nurses at the base level. It’s also a pretty fun career, lots of laughs and good times. Some bad also, obviously. The pandemic was a bit of a shitter.

Yeah this was a bad one tbh, proper ‘the claw’ if you know what I mean. He had to be secondary transferred to a trauma centre.

I mean I worked in the system for almost 20 years, it’s force of habit, my apologies. Urgent Treatment Centre - what all walk in centres and other similar units are now called. ED is emergency department.

Armodeen@reddit

It depends doesn’t it? I’ve seen a UTC send someone with a firework explosion and mangled hand to ED with their mates in a van before. Obviously they shouldn’t have done that. Most people who go to ED don’t need any treatment en route and aren’t at immediate risk of deterioration, many of those can make their own way. This is something that UTCs and indeed the ambulance services push where safe and appropriate.

Did 999 fail me? Should I complain?

Posted by MammothTash@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 195 comments

To take this further, most emergency services won’t respond at all for welfare checks anymore, there just isn’t the resources. If there is a confirmed medical need then they will do, but until then the onus is on those with concerns to gather information.

Why do we never hear about the Fire Brigade?

Posted by Liquidawesomes@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 188 comments

Armodeen@reddit

Their pay is shit but since they mostly get to sleep on shift at night they can work their second jobs (usually trades) so they come out on top. It’s also pretty cushy with regards to retirement, pension etc compared to the other services. They are generally well staffed. Despite all this they moan constantly about the pettiest stuff. Suppose that’s all public services though.

Is it realistic / feasible to own an EV without home charging in the UK?

Posted by Alicia2022_1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 60 comments

Armodeen@reddit

Can you do it? Yes. Is it really advisable? No. I am on my 4th EV and the first one we had no charger for 6 months. Is annoying having to go sit on a public charger for 30 mins ish a couple of times a week. I tried to see it as ‘me time’ and read or watch a show I liked, but it was still annoying and I was glad to be able to stop. It also costs a lot more now than it did then. You aren’t really saving that much compared to ICE.

I recommend visiting a few hospital emergency departments stateside and see how long you wait to be seen. It’s not some utopia, it’s just as shit as here and bankrupts you for the privilege. It’s the richest nation on earth and they have the most medical debt, medical bankruptcy and most deaths amenable to healthcare in the developed world.

How do you tell your location to 999?

Posted by supremethinking@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 288 comments

We can literally send them a link to their phone to give us the W3W. Also enables video calls or sharing of pictures (so we can see wounds, rashes etc when doing clinical triage).

999 services use W3W routinely these days. It’s a great tool for remote locations and if you lead with the W3W when asked for the location they will get it immediately.

Paramedic here. Our vehicles are serviced every 6-8 weeks but half of them are still sheds that spend a ton of time in the workshop. We abuse the life out of them and they are ragged about. You absolutely can pick up good ones but without knowing which is which personally I would be very wary.

Do not visit the USA unless absolutely essential. I’d say anyone who has their head anywhere but firmly in the sand would see that as it is so obvious. Sadly I _still_ hear people at work etc talking about going. They need their head examined.

I think it’s the way you came across as trying to explain the situation to someone who is an expert in it (an A&E reg). Every decision is a balancing act in an overstretched system and the poster attempted to explain why the OP found themselves in that situation.

I actually knuckled down for the first time in my life and discovered I could do anything I set my mind to. Some bumps along the way but I can apply myself these days at least. I was 28 when I discovered my motivation, I’m 44 now and I wish I had found it earlier (and rue what could have been) but it’s never too late my friend.
