Is citing US healthcare horror stories a case of too much “copium” by the UK?

In the US, people in my equivalent job and industry often make double what I do (GBP equivalent.) Depending on state, they can also pay considerably less overall tax. Depending on city in aforementioned states, the COL is comparable to the cheaper locations in the UK. Any time I suggest that we’re being criminally underpaid in the UK compared to Americans, besides the usual “oh well they are a richer company, harrumfff”, many people cite the idea that all it takes is one ER trip to end up homeless. I understand that’s a possibility in some jobs, where health insurance isn’t particularly good. But, in a lot of cases health insurance is pretty good. It’s also well documented that the poorest in America often don’t end up all that out of pocket at all on emergency healthcare. So why the cope? Do we just dislike the fact we’re being mugged off and leech onto preconceived notions of “well I’d hate to be bankrupt by a broken leg”.
