What's the most boring livery you've seen on a commercial passenger aircraft?
Xp-Paul-19@reddit
Personally united should've painted the grey underside blue so that it resembles the rising blue livery more
https://community.infiniteflight.com/t/design-your-own-airline-or-repaint-an-existing-airline-part-2/779090?page=141
True-Industry-4057@reddit
I feel like the blue bottom gives off IndiGo vibes a little too much. Granted the US3 are basically headed towards LCC status anyway
Xp-Paul-19@reddit
I can see it now maybe make it straight like they did for the rising blue livery
grumpytarantula@reddit
This is one of my favorite liveries ever
Fox_Tango_@reddit
Same here! Loved the blue tulip livery!
jebascho@reddit
That's basically JetBlue, but wavy.
kc_dal@reddit
China Eastern. The one until 2014ish was old-fashioned but more than fine.
Consistent-Welder458@reddit
I feel like JAL is worse because they don't even have Japanese text like how China Eastern has Chinese.
AejiGamez@reddit
They have the cool bird on the tail though, and I like that bird
Zestyclose-Truth1634@reddit
The Air France livery is a good example of how simple design principles can produce excellent results when applied correctly.
I remember taking a student-taught graphics design class in college and one of the assignments was to create a one-page, one-word design that best reflects the meaing of the word. The one design that everyone unanimously agreed was the best, was "Alone.", one word followed by a full stop, in black, sans serif font, size 12 text at the bottom right corner of a blank page.
kc_dal@reddit
Yeah. If I look at the AF livery longer, I almost feel like the barcode tail trains the eye to interpret the entire aircraft as the French flag. The primary logo (red chevron) lends to this.
DutchBlob@reddit
Air France went, for me, from one of the least to one of the sexiest liveries. The old airfrance logo was super ugly while the new AIRFRANCE logo with red widget looks super elegant.
happydad9@reddit
This was a truly bad livery
kamakamawangbang@reddit
Air New Zealand
Black and white, so original 🤨
Still prefer the Pacific Wave
AdmirableAppeal5845@reddit
As an Indonesian, this thing sucks.
peterpanic32@reddit
At least the newer Garuda livery is a very mild improvement over the older Garuda livery.
aucnderutresjp_1@reddit
JAL, even more boring than China Eastern.
moon_master345@reddit
yeah but their font is sleek af
aucnderutresjp_1@reddit
Arial bold and italic?
** JAPAN AIRLINES **
peterpanic32@reddit
It's angled for speed.
upbeatelk2622@reddit
Not Arial, it's a different font and meant to evoke their 1980s look.
aucnderutresjp_1@reddit
Yeah no I know, just basic enough. Doesn't really evoke much.
julietcharliepapa@reddit
I think they said Arial sarcastically to highlight how basic it is. They basically recreated the text using a very basic Reddit format code.
OmegaPoint6@reddit
China Eastern
usgapg123@reddit
Beat me to it. Genuinely don’t understand why they have that livery. China Southern’s is so much better.
Quantum353@reddit
Also Eastern Airways UK (rest in peace)
jskoker@reddit
Idk, that’s two colors. A bit advanced for Finnair.
lolariane@reddit
Finnair uses the colors of their flag. Personally I find it elegant.
OmegaPoint6@reddit
They at least use a fancy font and not something that looks like it was made in MS Publisher in 4 minutes
mexitarian@reddit
MS Publisher out here catching strays
OmegaPoint6@reddit
I assure you that was targeted
coloch_w0rth9@reddit
Finnair works well I think, the large titles on the planes make it interesting and it feels very Finnish. It fits the landscape of that country so well
LeatherFruitPF@reddit
Even JAL is similarly boring.
At least China Airlines and ANA make up for it (especially the A380 sea turtles)
Pizzashillsmom@reddit
China Airlines is from Taiwan, confusingly.
Pizzashillsmom@reddit
All of China's top 3 airlines is just China something with a red white blue livery...
MudMonyet22@reddit
I used to think Philippine Airlines would win this but at least they have 3 colours and a fully painted tail
bmwkid@reddit
The tail is nice but the Philippines part is the most basic font you could think of!
kevincsy33@reddit
So underwhelming for the flag carrier of a country with a diverse and vibrant culture...
OmegaPoint6@reddit
Yeah its only the tail, and the sharklets, saving that one
coloch_w0rth9@reddit
The new Korean Air one is pretty bad.
China Eastern and JAL are pretty dull as well, as others have mentioned.
The new Air India one is pretty brutal too, especially considering what they used to have.
xVelehkSainx@reddit
Idk why people don’t like the new Korean one. I love it.
Tamadrummer88@reddit
Same. I really like the new Korean Air livery. The old one looked incredibly dated.
peterpanic32@reddit
I would be fine with the new livery if they kept the same shade of blue and the multi-colored taegeuk. The sleek new shade of blue on new shade of blue is too sleek for me, gets rid of all the character.
coloch_w0rth9@reddit
To each their own!
From a graphic design point of view, there is not enough balance. The silver color of the font and very minimalist logo against the blue makes it hard to discern. It needs shades of white and red to balance it out, which the old livery did well. This new one to me just feels incomplete
Own_Place909@reddit
It's not the worst (thank god they didn't go white), but it is very plain. Dark blue line logo and boring font on a light blue body that looks ripped straight from KLM. I completely understand them wanting to shift away from the Pepsi logo and modernise the logo because it was admittedly dated, but in a sea of Eurowhite they have somehow made blue feel devoid of colour.
LuftHANSa_755@reddit
Air India Express had a bigger downgrade IMO; each aircraft used to have a unique design on the tail representing some part of Indian culture.
Now all their standard orange MAXes look like Akasa Air ripoffs.
galaxyhunter1@reddit
The tail patterns are unique for each aircraft. Now they represent traditional art and textile patterns.
Golgen_boy@reddit
Yes, I thought when they merged, AI would use the Vistara livery in red/gold. That would look nice.
Additional-Ride7173@reddit
It's not Condor
Golgen_boy@reddit
You either love it or hate it. Nothing in between. Imo this is great and works as a head-turner in any airport it lands in.
krikszkraksz@reddit
And you also instantly recognize them from the ground. I love it! And seeing a different colour every time I see a Condor makes it feel like a hunt for colours.😄
Armodeen@reddit
And it’s way better than eurowhite like 99% of airlines now
3_if_by_air@reddit
Mint candy cane-ahh livery
we_wuz_nabateans@reddit
I really dislike the new (not really new anymore) united livery. The gold stripe looked so nice and clean.
coloch_w0rth9@reddit
Anything with the globe looks terrible for them. It was great for Continental, but it has never worked for United.
They fucked up by ditching the tulip
DutchBlob@reddit
This was by far the most beautiful iteration. Rising blue.
peterpanic32@reddit
I still prefer the rainbow.
https://global.discourse-cdn.com/infiniteflight/original/4X/2/d/5/2d5760fe54f47e8a4522f28f3be5775420ab5fdf.jpeg
peterpanic32@reddit
But the gold globe was definitely better than the monochrome globe.
ltsmash1200@reddit
Agree. I hate the globe. Tulip forever.
Throwitfarawayplzthx@reddit
I think your nostalgia is talking. That’s as boring as China eastern.
australiadenier@reddit
I actually agree with you. It's people's nostalgia talking. That livery is objectively mid.
ltsmash1200@reddit
You’re nuts. The Saul Bass United livery is one of the all time greats
The Friend Ship and the Wedge were good too.
Soderholmsvag@reddit
FormulaJAZ@reddit
Bring back the tulip!
(The CA globe reeks of generic Office '98 clipart.)
No_Letterhead6010@reddit
I agree the old one was better, but it’s not as horrific as the Korean or Lufthansa ones, nor is it as boring as the spirit yellow
peterpanic32@reddit
Yeah, it's decidedly average among modern aircraft livery redesigns.
truthhurts2222222@reddit
United's Battleship Grey/Navy Blue livery, aka the September 11th version, will always be the GOAT to me
halfty1@reddit
Battleship Grey looked great when the paint was brand new but aged and faded terribly. It looked rough after a few years.
truthhurts2222222@reddit
Agreed, dark isn't a good shade for most aircraft
peterpanic32@reddit
Someone tell American.
CUBuffs1992@reddit
Love the Battleship Grey but didn’t hold up well.
bonerparte1821@reddit
Loved the bowling shoe or battleship gray? livery. I’ve only seen the term used for North West… so whatever the unite ld version was
Old-Cream6210@reddit
The bowling shoe livery was for Northwest Airlines. The battleship gray was used for United.
plhardman@reddit
I desperately want them to bring back even one aircraft in Saul Bass livery 🔥
TabsAZ@reddit
Hopefully on a 777 - the airplane was originally supposed to launch in that livery, there were artist renderings and models and everything but the switch to Battleship Gray happened and it ended up in that one.
Junior_Lavishness_96@reddit
They shouldn’t have ditched the gold, it really came out at night with logo lights
Far-Yellow9303@reddit
It's not a passenger aircraft and it's not the livery specifically that I find boring. But this Cargo Jet called Cargo Jet always makes me laugh with how lazily and direct it's named.
Mauzersmash0815@reddit
https://www.planespotters.net/photo/1836676/uk67021-my-freighter-boeing-767-330er-bdsf-wl
But have you seen "my freighter" lmao?
Far-Yellow9303@reddit
That the "My" is in a different colour reads to me like they're emphasising specifically that THIS plane in particular is MY freighter
LetsGetNuclear@reddit
Cargojet also has this livery for their President's best friend.
https://pagesix.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2025/07/drakes-private-jet-108502876.jpg
JOHN_RAlDER@reddit
I like the zooming maple leaf 🍁
Lunar_Loops@reddit
PIA Airlines HAS to be one of the most boring out there
Signal-Treacle-5512@reddit
FinnAir
D058@reddit
Janet Air
Crimson__Fox@reddit
In my opinion nearly every new livery is more boring than the previous. It’s probably on purpose to save on weight by using as little paint as possible.
drunkin_idaho@reddit
I use to think United's grey livery made it the best looking commercial airliner. This one not so much.
Puppybl00pers@reddit
Boring? It's hands down China Eastern, there is just nothing going on, same for Janet but I don't think they count
Limp-Munkee69@reddit
I read that it's because a lot of their planes have unique "special" liveries, for certain brands, holiday's etc. So they make the standard livery boring to bring focus onto the special planes.
Blackavar89@reddit
The new Lufthansa
Junior_Lavishness_96@reddit
I agree, taking the yellow away was like losing a leg
Limp-Munkee69@reddit
I like it on paper, but the lack of yellow really brings it down.
If they combined the old with the new, they'd have an AMAZING livery imo.
KPSWZG@reddit
Not only it look less distinct it also look almost identical to Polish airline logo
the_last_third@reddit
If I could upvote this a million times I would. They f*cked up one of the THE most iconic liveries ever.
Minimalist BS.
Ilove_gaming456@reddit
Wanna hear the worst? For over most of their history they included yellow in the livery, so on the 100 year livery to conmemorate their most iconic color duo, they went with all dark blue and absolutely no yellow at all
DadCelo@reddit
There actually is some yellow lol
NetworkDeestroyer@reddit
The color scheme just reminds me of Riyadh Air’s new livery
nodspine@reddit
I'm not even bothered by the minimalism, I'm bothered by the fact they all do in the same way. Monochromatic, they just extend the color of the tail fin to the fuselage and desaturate the logo.
mgs112112@reddit
Yes
Stegosaurus69@reddit
Same with korea
danzrok@reddit
Disagree
Solitary_Aviator@reddit
The new Korean. I'm a frequent visitor to ICN and the fact that I'm beginning to see that blue boring thing more and more frequently over time drives me sick.
Pons399@reddit
Zero aura, this pic sums up the difference nicely.
Still-Wafer1384@reddit
Logo is ok but bummer that they made the tail shorter
w00t4me@reddit
Lufthansa new livery also lack aura, but it’s better than Korean new livery
Own_Place909@reddit
They both suck because they're logos/liveries so obviously designed for web and digital use and not real world application. Simple single colour or two tone circular icons that can be easily rendered as vectors, up and downsized without losing detail, and easily used as favicons and app icons. Then they get slapped on a single tone tail with an often just eurowhite and single tone fuselage. No thought put into adapting the logos into real world use on the liveries.
I'm biased as a Kiwi, but Air New Zealand has done it well, I think. The koru has been the brand logo for decades and it has always lent itself well as an icon and scalable vector, but even now in the digital and web age they have kept a distinct and interesting livery with the silver fern and black that stretches down the back \~third of the aircraft. Qatar would be another example as the maroon ibex is a great icon, but the whole aircraft is used for the livery and it made more complex with the stripes behind the ibex and tone tone of the fuselage. Both liveries are relatively minimalist but neither are simple.
Ok_Painting_180@reddit
Yah everything has to look good as an app basically
incestNTRlover@reddit
I didn't even notice it at first. Blended with the old one
GetawayDriving@reddit
I don’t know what you’re talking about I live flying Pepsi Airlines
Used_Return9095@reddit
the new korean air livery looks modern and sleek to me imo. I like it compared to the previous one
Old-Cream6210@reddit
Same! It also kept the blue fuselage. Imagine if they didn't...
can_i_has_beer@reddit
Not to mention two shades of blue. To me it looks incredibly cheap.
chateau86@reddit
Tfw no more Pepsi tail
Still-Wafer1384@reddit
JesusWasATurtle@reddit
As someone who works in the A321 FAL in Toulouse we have had countless Indigo's on the assembly line in the past few months and they're just terrible
unhingedfried@reddit
It’s not THAT bad. Gets boring after seeing your 100th A320 though.
JesusWasATurtle@reddit
Yeah there definitely is some bias on my part having seen dozens in a relatively short time
unhingedfried@reddit
I’m with you. After a 100 Indigo flights, I just don’t notice the livery anymore.
Affectionate_One_700@reddit
US Government agencies and contractors (eg. Atlas, Kalitta, CIA) have lots of unmarked all-white planes.
Dazzling-Flight9860@reddit
taken at VHHH, I assume?
willnoli@reddit (OP)
Yes indeed
oioioifuckingoi@reddit
Most airlines that adopted the Euro white trend have less than inspiring liveries.
KPSWZG@reddit
Can you give an example?
Like with Lufthansa and LOT Polish Airlines?
Althou to Polish defense they used the same logo for 100 years now and Lufthansa recently changed from the yellow one to this blue one.
Starboard314@reddit
Delta. The font is too small and the logo is awful.
tsoiman@reddit

krikszkraksz@reddit

TwujZnajomy27@reddit
Any airline and plane painted in þe Star Alliance livery
Except maybe Air New Zealand
Old-Cream6210@reddit
Almost all of them. I love colored fuselages. It's such a shame that it's not "modern" to have a colored fuselage.
contactdeparture@reddit
I thought it was cost/maintenance over anything.
Coreysurfer@reddit
Discover airlines, just saw one of theirs last night on a youtube live flights show in las vegas
DutchBlob@reddit
What? Their new livery is great! The tail is a clear nod to Lufthansa but also the color of water with a touch of yellow sand.

This Air NZ ATR 72-500. Just before retirement.

DadCelo@reddit
Yes! Wish they had made it the standard livery.
spikyblades@reddit
So which boring one you talking about?
DadCelo@reddit
The current standard LH livery that's basically all white with a dark blue tail.
DutchBlob@reddit
That always looks black in nearly any lighting condition
Clem573@reddit
The new Swiss livery plays on simplicity, I personally find it underwhelming. Good thing they have some nice special liveries though
DutchBlob@reddit
Final Swissair livery looked far better
hooDio@reddit
i think what saves them from looking kinda cheap is that the text is pretty prominent and in color
JBR409@reddit
Trans States Airlines. They were a regional airline for American until 2018 and United until their folding in 2020
gus248@reddit
Zipair.
toshibathezombie@reddit
So if Zip made it's livery on Windows.... Does that make the livery WinZip?
littlechefdoughnuts@reddit
I actually adore this livery.
V A P O R (T R A I L) W A V E
hongooi@reddit
lol, it looks like the painter didn't have the actual font they used so they substituted a generic Times Roman for it
djoliverm@reddit
Honestly I dig it, like a liminal Japanese take which is very much what that airline is all about. I can't wait to fly it for my next Japan trip since they weren't flying out of SFO when we booked our trip a few years ago.
gus248@reddit
Just as a side note, Zipair is actually pretty decent if you can tolerate budget international flights. Flew with them two years ago for $380 round trip out of LAX.
__O_o_______@reddit
Man, comparing my flight in 2018 Vancouver to Tokyo to today’s prices is depressing. It ended up being $700 Canadian all in, or about $495 USD with today’s exchange rates
mrstretchb4ureach@reddit
Hell yeah. I flew to Japan multiple times using Zipair and I've always had a pleasant experience. Grateful for their low prices.
therago1456@reddit
Just be sure to load up on downloaded content for the flight and you'll be fine.
bmwkid@reddit
Also great deal for a lie flat seat. I’ve seen them under $1,000
__O_o_______@reddit
Yikes lol
upbeatelk2622@reddit
And they had to do away with the Z on the tail (see bottom plane) once the Ukraine war started. Inadequate research into puns and symbolisms.
Zipair is one of the worst branding fails in recent history. Do you see how it's supposed to be Z___ (fill in the blank) and then in front the blank is filled with the word AIR :P

Is there a reason airline liveries keep getting worse and more uninspired with every redesign
Small-Policy-3859@reddit
Corporate minimalism, trying to be culturally faceless. It's not limited to airlines, it's happening with almost all consumer products.
GEF110F14F15@reddit
But it’s like do they know it it looks bad
Small-Policy-3859@reddit
Corporate penny-pushers are not the type to care about aesthetics. If minimalism statistically earns them the most money they'll go for it every time. If drawing a turd on an airplane did the same they'd do that.
GEF110F14F15@reddit

And their design hadn’t been updated since the late 80s.
SevenandForty@reddit
TBF just because a design is old doesn't mean it's bad; ANA's livery has been around since 1982 with minor changes (mostly changing the title text from Japanese to English)
EagleEye_2000@reddit
At this point, I would rather not ask them to change it.
With the recent history of livery changes of airlines going all kinds of wrong, I cannot trust them to change the design and also mangle that 'sunriser' tail.

They don’t just paint aircraft colors for no reason, it’s a literal ad board. If your livery sticks out guess what people are going to try and find you (Air New Zealand, Etihad, Fiji etc)

Livery applies to other transport objects. Stagecoaches, trains, even ships.
Apparently it is rooted in uniform liveries.
But it speaks to being a uniform identity. Even shipping trucks have liveries.

Lufthansa is surprisingly terrible. Same with the new Korean Air livery.

From the comments, it seems that the most boring ones are mostly the flag carriers, for some reason.

Yeah United is indeed pretty vanilla. I always thought Continental was kind of lame to start with.

New Korean Air. Probably not objectively the most boring, but as someone who loves the ‘80s one, it makes me cringe every time.

Paint, schmaint. I’ll settle for the being successful, profitable, well managed, expanding, hiring like mad, good place to work theme.

As far as US airlines. Delta. Or Kalitta’s new livery.
However. It’s hard to be more bland than Japan Airlines, Philippines, or the new Korean.
I liked UAs new livery when it rolled out but it’s a downgrade to the merger livery to me, mostly because I loved that livery as Continental.
AA’s new livery is up there too. It’s just bad.
