Is it ok in British culture for people to stay silent while eating together?

333333x@reddit

Yeah I'm surprised so many people talk during a meal. When I eat I put a new mouthful in as soon as ice swallowed the last. If course I might say a few words in between mouthful fulls but for the most part I'm not starting a conversation mid meal.

Mum is not allowing me to work or gain benefits? (M18)

I don't know what the answer to your solution is but your mum is literally willing to ruin your future to keep getting benefits. That is abysmal, she should be encouraging you to get experience and work your way towards a successful life. At least you have the motivation to make something of yourself and you will break the cycle. Good luck. I will add that building savings while your young is super important to your future prospects of home ownership.

Can I get some workplace advice please?

I don't know about your work place but at mine that's not necessarily a road to being fired. It's kind of like a drivers licence, after 12 months the sick days come off but if you get too many 'points', they will take steps that may lead to being let go. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you unless you have a very strict heartless company. Sounds like you just had a bad year.

Would love to become a sort of fun uncle to my best friends kids, but how do I do that without seeming strange?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 30 comments

333333x@reddit

I don't think you can really plan to have the title, you just either are or your not. I think it's important to be yourself and not try to be something your not. I'm an aunty and while I wouldn't describe myself as a fun aunty, I do love planning things like teddy bear picnics or doing crafts because i really enjoy doing stuff like that.

How do I explain to my daughter why her friend constantly gets new toys despite being lower class and living in a council house?

Posted by Ok-Implement-8976@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 117 comments

333333x@reddit

I don't think you should be teaching your child that richer kids get more toys or that because you have a nicer house you have more money. Don't teach her to compare what she has to others, it's irrelevant and not something you want her to keep as she grows older.

I'm in the north, I could live comfortably off £2000 a month but factor in kids and I wouldn't be able to provide them with what I would want for them. Unless I had paid off my mortgage and even then I wouldn't consider myself well off if I had kids to provide for.

It's not you. By the sound of it you just get by in life minding your own business, causing no harm to others. The best way to live. I don't know you so I don't know what makes you stand out but people just pick on people who are different. It's purely to boost their own self worth and no reflection on you. It's a cliche but it really does say more about them than you. There are people out there who will appreciate you for you. I am often drawn to those who are 'different'. I find them interesting people.

Do I report my friend to children’s services?

Posted by No-Hat-4967@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

333333x@reddit

Oh that's sad. The child's welfare has to come first, if your kids go to the same school maybe talk to a teacher or head teacher. Its possible they have also noticed something is amiss.

Fellow brits, I'm getting a little bit of inheritance soon and I wish to get my teeth sorted, how do i sort this out?

Posted by DavidSwifty@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

333333x@reddit

I would say don't go abroad. Depending on what's wrong with your teeth I would get any decay fixed on the NHS and any cosmetic work will have to be private. Keep in mind NHS will fit silver fillings on back teeth, so any fillings on back teeth will need to be private if you want them white, which I recommend if you have the money.

Yes report. It's not good for the cat to constantly be pregnant, that on top of lots of animals in a small space is cause for concern.

The most important thing for her is a loving family who will forever be her support network ♥️ well done for being a good sibling and caring about her. It must be hurtful to watch, and hurtful and hard for your sister, but school is temporary, your's and hers friendship is forever.

Posted by rebeccabooks@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 63 comments

Normal for big birthdays however it's never okay to do it for one and not the other. This is only excusable if the person who organises them didn't have notice of the birthday in adequate time.

I find some of the answers on here sad. It really wasn't that long ago, especially the second war. Having done a family tree myself I am certain almost everyone in Britain has lost a relative in one or both wars. Maybe everyone should find those people in their own families and they might use the two minute silence to remember them.

Leaving them alone at that age isn't a problem but make sure they are awoken if there was a fire as there won't be anyone there to wake them. So test all your fire alarms. Also assuming you are in a safe enough area and not somewhere with high crime rates.

Would people honestly have an issue me using the disabled toilet at work, and should I care?

Posted by Distinct-Injury6301@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 221 comments

333333x@reddit

Everyone uses our disabled toilet at work as we don't actually have any disabled person who needs it. Also its on the 2nd floor and our work has a policy that if you can't walk down the stairs you work on the ground floor as lifts can't be used in case of a fire so I have no idea why we even have a wheel chair accessible toilet in our office.

I think it's the way OP worded the question. The UK has problems but considering we are far more fortunate than a lot of countries, you have to be a bit tactful with your moaning when it's viewable to an international audience.

I wouldn't say you can only get on the property ladder if your parents give you money. But I would say if your parents expect you to leave the house at 18 or pay high rent to live with them, then yes, it would be extremely hard to get on the property ladder.

As long as you have enough money to pay all your bills and to do all tje things you want to do and enough savings incase of an emergency then I would agree there is no need to introduce stress into your life for more money to buy more things. Some people are to money orientated.

Why do so many wealthy people in the UK live in villages and small towns?

Love visiting cities but would hate to live in one. The constant sirens, never seeing the same face twice and not being able to walk in a straight line because there's so many people. And streets and streets of junk shops. I live on the edge of a small town and I feel that's the best of both worlds. Country side and civilisation.

You will be fine. Treat everyone with respect, smile to them, hold doors open etc. If you get into conversations with any local people tell them how excited you are about your trip and they will LOVE you. As a whole everyone here is pretty easy to get along with. British people like Americans, just not the ones who think they're better than other countries.

It's a risk. You could easily get a bad tenant who trashes the house, costing the landlord thousands. And if a tenant refuses to leave the landlord can end up with extortionate court bills. I don't think it's easy, risk free money.
