Is my sister usual for her age group nowadays?

I just wanna say, i don’t think it’s uncommon for teenagers and tweens to be embarrassed of their family in public. It is rather common behaviour. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are being bullied but secondary school is a very judgemental time/place, there is a sort of social hierarchy that exists explicitly in school in an unchallenged way that almost doesn’t exist anywhere else in life in the same way (since people become more mature). There’s this pressure to be “cool” and a hierarchy between who is and who’s not. All of this stuff makes people self-conscious. I think your sister would benefit from kindness and support over criticism but I would say try to not make it seem like pity or be overbearing, that might just make her feel “smaller” and like a “victim” if she’s already self-conscious. I do think, that for any age, spending too much time on social media over the real world is not healthy. However, I think she needs kind and gentle support to combat this, not pressure and criticism. Oftentimes, when people spend too much time on social media it’s due to underlying struggles like loneliness, social anxiety, neurodivergence, and other forms of struggles. Maybe, finding and joining a hobby that she enjoys will help her make friends, organically. Also, as others have suggested she might struggle with neurodivergence. But, also, I recommend considering social anxiety and maybe helping her with support with that? I’m pretty sure GP can refer to talk therapies for that, or you guys could go private (since NHS talk therapies aren’t the most helpful imo). Social anxiety can be a hard thing but a totally compatible thing if you get the right resources and support Ofc, as you can see, all of this is quite a lot, so certainly don’t bring it all up together, it would be overwhelming.
