I’ve have a question about life in 2005/6?

That was a memorable year for me, I travelled a bunch. I got a return flight to Italy on promotion for “tax only”, with Ryan Air for £8.99. I would get really annoyed if I forgot to charge my digital camera before going out, or upload my photos so the memory card was full. I got a job from reading job ads in the guardian newspaper as well as on gumtree.com. I also got them by going to places with my CV and asking if they had any work. I only knew about three people that used dating websites cause most people would ask someone out anywhere at anytime. The radio was how you found about new music, so you always wanted to have it on. The best part was daydreaming or people watching to pass the time. Nearly everyone I knew I knew carried a paperback or a note book about for passing time at appointments.

People who work in bars / pubs: What's the most incriminating thing you've heard patrons talk about?

Honestly, they probably all just worked it out themselves. In my experience people with burn out think they are doing well enough, while everyone around them is often more aware of how bad it is than they themselves are.

I find rudeness to take a few forms: People don’t take responsibility for things they way they used to, in many ways, like they litter casually, or they don’t don’t return their tea mug to the dishwasher at work, or they leave a mess in a public restroom. People don’t use their manners, don’t hold doors open, dont thank bus drivers or shop keepers, don’t know how to use a knife and fork, don’t excuse themselves when they burp.

I’d say COVID - lockdown was a lot of it, but not entirely it, for example the awful harassment and attitude received caregivers and response staff because due to their need to work with the people who had COVID

In all honesty, do you view weight loss drugs (Mounjaro, Wegovy etc.) and the people who use them negatively?

Posted by XStaticImmaculate@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1059 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

I get it, but I don’t think everyone who uses them should. I know people who have deeply struggled with “food noise” and it’s so right for them. I know others who are looking for a quick fix, who I know haven’t wanted to try improve their lifestyle and judge them.

Sure, I didn’t explain it well! It’s called something like being a property guardian/ guardian angel for properties. My mate lived in an abandoned hospital for a while before they turned it into flats.

Someone I know saved money for their first rental (despoti etc) by share housing onsite property living. Basically living places so squatters can’t take it over. It’s very temporary, but it’s effetely free.

Have a stint of time off between jobs so I can say - spend more money than I should! Aside from travel, see exhibitions, go to museums, parks and National Trust areas, hike, go to libraries and book stores, garden, read in nice places, eat in nice restaurants when they’re quiet and it’s a better experience has been a big one.

How do I go about a job interview?

I would take a change of clothes and a hair brush and do it on the train. Contact the person who lined up the interview and let them know about it being a tight turn around between shifts (in case of train delays)

How would you proceed with handling stress/burnout in my employment situation?

watchingonsidelines@reddit

I would do two things, 1. outline what is doable in your role, vs what is currently asked. Map it across both yourself and your direct reports workload. Show a from and to, and submit it as a plan for your team to whomever can be reasonably seen to be the nearest to responsible for your department. 2 take the time off stress leave.

What are they into? Most folk I know want to see the historical or more cliche things, which means anywhere with a castle or a historical significance is usually a win, bonus if it’s pretty! Places like Bath are popular with foreigners as they often know the historical significance, the Cotswolds has a ton of towns that look like picture books, or consider places linked to them, like the Beatrix Potter House. I ask what they are into as there a lot of great things to see if you’re into football and cricket too, there’s also massive lore around books like Harry Potter, i would also say go to Edinburgh regardless, it has history, a castle, and amazing cultural references!

What to see in Scotland??

Do you think there’s a demand for women only gym/fitness/wellness centres?

Posted by Powerful-Duck-5193@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 109 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

Another perspective, as an older woman I need to lift heavy, it’s advised for women 40+ to stop osteoporosis (and all older people for retaining muscle with age). When I go to the gym the equipment I want to use is usually more desired by younger men, it can feel intimidating to use the same space sometimes. If you had a women only gym having a protocol for older women and weight lifting would be seriously considered by many I believe

What does "bright colours" actually mean at a funeral (male)?

I went to a funeral for a young guy, with the same instructions. Most of the guys wore a single colour tie (red, green, yellow) and a white shirt with smart trousers as it made them feel most comfortable.

I would message the emergency contact of someone by lunchtime on the day they didn’t show up. Reason being I don’t employ people who are unreliable, so if they don’t show up I instantly know something is wrong.

Do you want advice on how to keep parenting him or on how to seek to enable him to make more grown up choices for himself? Without therapy I don’t see much changing, he’s relied on his mother and yourself to find him jobs, house him, manage his medical needs etc. I’m certainly nothing will change without his ow willingness and therapy intervention

What is something your parents were not strict about but you wish they were?

watchingonsidelines@reddit

Interesting. I would say it’s a fairly new phenomenon for many. I grew up in the 80s and my mum made me wash and cleanse my face twice a day, took me for facials etc. I remember a sleep over at a friend’s house and the mother asking me what I was doing as we got ready for bed. She told me she had never put anything on her face but soap.

What was the moment that made you realise you absolutely had to leave a job?

Posted by GoldenGolgis@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 326 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

So true- I work an aspirational job. Seriously a top a job for people in my field. It’s so many people’s dream job. But the reality is that over a few years it’s been chipped away at, harassment by senior staff, undermining by colleagues, incompetent nepo hires, gaps plugs with poor performers for other teams, temp staff, less staff, more work, no pay rise. The final straw for me was interviewing to see what was out there, and they really wanted me. Like the contrast of a day to day where I “should grateful to have this job” vs “we really want YOU and value your expertise for a job with us” was what did it. I knew I made the right choice when I handed in my notice and gave my manager a chance to talk me out of it and show me how they would see my skills supporting the company, and they didn’t have anything to say. Then spent the whole time talking about how to cover for me, and the impact it would have on them.

Neighbours being unreasonable? What can I do?

watchingonsidelines@reddit

Sounds like you’ve been really reasonable so far. I would stick to reduced conversations - you’re in a rush, you need to make a phone call, you need to get the dinner on or whatever. If they cant complain to you then they will whine to each other instead

Is this ok from a parent?

watchingonsidelines@reddit

I think about this often too. In the case described here, OPs friend is saying “mature” because it’s one of the guiding principles for deciding about leaving a child alone. Does this six year old know how to out out a fire, call for help, know not to open the door to a stranger, know not to climb on things or use sharp kitchen tools or the stove? Perhaps that is what is making her decide this. However, to me this is pretty awful because she’s not feeling stuck or forced to leave the child, she’s going on a walk. A six year old can go on a walk and if they are that mature then they can wear headphones and listen to an audio book and walk beside her “in peace”. If she is saying they interrupt her, or she has to keep an eye on the my o stop y hem getting in danger then guess what? They’re not mature enough to be left at home! People will always say “when I was a kid I was left alone”, me too, I would be alone with my 3 yr old brother at age 6. I was mature. It’s pretty awful to expect that of any kid unless it feels like an absolute extreme situation got you there. A walk isn’t that.

What’s the best Marathon or Half Marathon you’ve done in the UK?

Posted by LiamUK436@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 10 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

I have done halves. Cardiff was a good vibes, Bristol too. I loved Oxford, it was a great vibes, really varied and loss of fun bits, like a brass band! I wouldn’t be keen for Edinburgh again. I loved being in Edinburgh before and after but the actual marathon was spoiled by running out of the city meaning a cold wait for the buses to eventually get us all back to town.

I've 3 months off work - what would you do?

Painting (anything from paper to miniatures), photography, reading, writing (journaling to song writing), learn an instrument, cooking or baking, repair work (electrics to woodworking), card tricks, domino’s, puzzles, pottery, mechanical repairs (cars and bikes), depending on movement - archery, golf, hiking in nature, bowls.

Would you be satisfied if people providing services to you (plumbers, builders, doctors, childcare)had the same work ethic as you do?

Posted by MonsieurGump@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 60 comments

It depends. If it’s something that I can do, and do well but I’m choosing to pay, then I expect the same standard. When it’s something I know nothing about? Just get it done how you can.

Why do people have kids and what are the benefits?

Posted by Lumpy-Tennis-1219@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 76 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

People choose community over immediate comfort all the time. If you didn’t do things they were hard you wouldn’t do anything at all. You just have to choose what hard things you’re willing to do, that being your joy. Having kids isn’t for everyone, it is hard sometimes. Everyone complains about life sometimes. So why have them? You value family and community, you gain love and feel valued when you are supporting others, you want to bring joy to someone what wasn’t brought to you at the same age…

What are the limits of what you can do on sick leave?

Posted by Happy_Chief@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 225 comments

watchingonsidelines@reddit

That makes sense. So practise going out guilt free during the week, in work hours. Then in the weekends you can feel more at ease, and safe in the knowledge that right now you’re classed with having an invisible disability and it’s discrimination for anyone to question how unwell you are because they can’t see the proof of it

Those things are fine. To ease your guilt - how likely are you to see people while they are supposed to be at work themselves? If you saw them in an evening out would they talk to you? If you you can explain how you’re feeling.

Think about the things you like and research from there: could be a food, sport, weather, a movie or game that takes place somewhere that interests you. Come up with a short list and start pricing flights and hostels (quite fun to stay in a hostel when you’re travelling solo as you are more likely to meet new people in a similar situation). Places that spring to mind to get some what right now include Canary Islands, Malta, and Egypt (rea sea resorts)

The UK is huge. Think about the things you do like about living abroad and seek them here- big city? Cultured? Diverse? Alternative? UK has it all so go to an area that connects with your life not just “home”. That’s my advice as someone who’s lived in five different countries

This is the comment. Each child is different. I feel 10 is when responsible children might be OK. The real question is would your kid be OK and know what to do if the worst happened to you while you were out?
