Anyone academically strong in high school fail to live up to career expectations?

I was your typical G&T kid, top of the class, all the extra curriculars, always a "good girl," Ivy League grad, met my spouse in college. Had my dream career, was pretty ambitious, and then guess what? I had kids and my salary was a drop in the bucket of our HHI and now I work 3 days a week for a non profit. Not in management, not an executive, but i love my work and I LOVE my time. Every now and then I'm slightly envious of these kickass career women, especially my friends from college, but overall I'm pretty pleased with my choices.

So who has a GOOD relationship with their parents?

Me! Both of my (previously healthy)parents had health scares over the last year (dad needed a quadruple bypass, mom had awful cancer with chemo and a stem cell transplant) and I never felt closer to them or my sister. I feel so lucky to have both of them. Parts of this year were brutal (and so many hospitals and needles and various bodily fluids) but the love and support in all directions is immense. Even more precious when it’s vulnerable.

Yes! So then no contemporary kids want to read them at all! (Sorry, I’m a librarian, a sarcastic one at that). Covers change all the time, it’s the nature of the beast. You want things to feel fresh. Kids will not check out a book that looks like this.

I watched a preview of UP in a theater filled with adults (corporate perk of Disney adjacent company) and that is a movie for adults. Not a dry eye in the house and then we all had to go back to work. Those movies, especially the early ones, get you no matter where you are. As a parent, watching Andy give his toys to Bonnie? Inside out when Goofball island went down? My heart couldn’t take it.

Whenever I want a good cry, I watch the last 5 minutes of this show on YouTube. It’s devastating. Wayne took over the business, after Dad died. I like to look back, in wonder. All the tears.

The 80’s margarine craze

When my grandma died I took all of her cookbooks and in the fundraiser cookbooks from her synagogue there were SO MANY recipes using margarine. You couldn't bake with butter if you were serving it with a meat meal, but these 1950s-60s cookbooks were like science experiments. Canned fruit cocktail, gelatin, margarine. It was like they came to this country and found all of this stuff so exciting and appealing. I would actually sort of love to dig into that.

Same same. My kids stay up later than me. I just went to a matinee disco in nyc, 5-9 pm. So I don’t think we’re alone. I’ll have half a coffee at 4pm if I need to be out till 11

Children’s librarian here: one of my least favorite parts of the job is weeding the picture book collection for what doesn’t circulate. George and Martha, Miss Nelson, Arthur, Lyle Crocodile. None of them go out any more and I took them out of circulation. I have my own copies at home.

I’m the parent in charge of booking assemblies. Elementary school is the best. Middle school is IMPOSSIBLE. Everything is cringe.

My best friend and I would alternate buying each book, she’d buy the evens, I’d buy the odds. Ann M Martin was the first author I ever met. My dad took me to a Walden books to meet her, I still remember that day. So special.

Do your kids have objectively more than you had? Same? Less?

I had fantastic present parents with whom I’m still close. My kids have (don’t mind me saying) fantastic present parents. We have more money than my parents did, so we’ve traveled more, live in a more high cost of living area. I worry sometimes how to balance that, but I think we do an ok job keeping them (relatively) grounded.

Memories of the “Greatest Generation “

Vietnam and the draft really changed the way Baby Boomers related to military service in this country. They were forced to fight in a war they couldn't justify the reasons for. They weren't revered when they came back, it was not a badge of honor like serving in WWII. Many of our grandparents served in WWII or the Korean war, but by the time my dad's birthday came up in the Vietnam Draft lotto, he had the savvy to joint the Reserves so he never had to go overseas. There just wasn't pride in serving in the military in the same way. AND NOW, our country is completely stratified into who fights in wars and who doesn't. And the american flag has been coopted by the right.

i take my 2 year old to storytime and the librarian there can go around in a circle and remember 95% of the kid's names, sometimes like 25 kids. Sometimes she'll say , "remind me their name" when we come but she always nails it. I don't get it.

Travel before the internet was tough without one of these packed in your luggage

I LOVE getting travel books at the library. They always have the newest edition and they really help me orient my travel plans. The internet is a vast and often confusing place. Travel books give sample itineraries, maps. It’s always where I start and then I can get into the weeds online. Theres a reason these guys are still in print.

Your interests don’t have to die because you had kids. Involve your kids in your hobbies. Not sure their ages but mine are young teens and we plan trips around hiking or what we want to see. National parks here in the US, a road around iceland, visiting family in Spain, a costa rica adventure. Sure, it’s not a month living off the grid or long distance hiking and it all costs money, but what a gift you can give to your kids, your time and time together as a family. I am feeling like my active time with them is slipping away, and that’s the part that makes me sad.

Librarian here. Please don't call us free daycare, we are not that. And please check your library's unattended child policy. Our policy states that if we cannot locate the parent of any child under 10 in the building, we call the police. We are not free daycare.

well the question was what holds up. I loved this book as a child but as an adult it gives me the ick and I did not read it to my children. There are very few books i took out of rotation when my kids were little and this is one of them. Pinkalicious is another.

Solidarity. My daughter got her first period the day my mother shaved her head because her hair started falling out from chemo. It was a surreal day. Lean on your partner, keep being present with your kids and make mental notes of the good times, and take care of yourself.

Well what was the topic? Our nonfiction and reference collections are a lot less utilized than they were even 10-15 years ago so they because dusty shelves that could be better utilized. We used to have kids doing state reports. A mystery book report. Hardly anyone is coming in asking for these things anymore. (But I do know how to help them when they do)

The library is so much more than books for people who can’t afford them. Downloading ebooks from Amazon when you can get download them from the library but you don’t feel like waiting is putting money into the hands of Jeff Bezos who definitely does not need it.
